"I'm not your shadow..." Hiei commented, pouting, shifting the baby so it sat a in his arms easier.
He looked at Kurama with some doubt in his face. "We'll have to give her back eventually, you know." He pointed out. "Koenma would never let us keep her..."

It almost was a complete tangent, however, the words got the job done. His intentions were cold, to an extent, but maybe it would allow the fire apparition to stick around. Kurama did care much for him, after all, and savored his company, despite all the teasing.

Why did he stop himself? Hiei was not one to leave such a thing unfinished... so did it have a particular purpose? Or was he keeping himself from saying a certain thing?

The kitsune took a few steps closer to the other, just to take a look at the child, before replying, "School does not start up again for a few weeks, and in the meantime, what have I to do? You'll consider staying here, won't you? Surely you don't care that Mukuro wants you around."

Normally lively green eyes were downcast, as he came to a realization... not something he hadn't known, before, really, but it only now seemed to sink in.

Hiei knew why he was really there.... He knew why he always showed up here. And he felt bad for it, for wanting the other's company all to himself. But he wasn't so sure about the child becoming a part of that, he was a greedy little bugger when it came to Kurama's attention. "It's not that- I- I just..... I don't like sharing you with her." He admitted. "Whenever I've been here before it's just been you and me but this," He held the baby at arm's length. "This takes away some of your attention and I'm not comfortable with it gaining that so easily."

Such a speech meant very much, coming from Hiei... but he wasn't sure how to respond verbally, though he did smile when the Koorime got to the last part. The fox didn't want to assume anything, but also didn't want to make it seem like the words didn't matter.
The delayed reply was this: "The child will require a lot of tending to, but Hoshiko won't interfere with our time together. Nothing can get in the way of that."
Kurama wanted to continue, but wasn't sure if what he hoped to add was appropriate—or, in other words, if the fire apparition would take it well.

"Hoshiko is only an infant, and I do feel sorry for her being without her mother," He admitted. "But Kurama, even without her, would you of still.... Let me spend this much time here?" Hiei questioned.

Of course, if it was sleep she wanted, Hiei would soon find out that infants almost never slept the whole night, but woke up periodically and would scream until tended to. Their work would never be done until she grew much older... or they gave her up the the adoption agency.
Kurama went through some of the things he had earlier bought, and from a bag he took a small toy dragon. It had reminded him of the Jagan master, so naturally it had instantly been thrown in the cart. Carefully, he held the plush reptile out to her.
