I find it very hard to write AUs, so I just perfer to read them. I must admit that it's hard to find one that doesn't ruin the characters. Some though, are very good. But as I've said before, it's nearly impossible for me to write a good AU.

B L ! S S <3 I have quite the distaste for people inserting their own OCs into the Inuyasha world x3; Even though I have been guilty of this in younger days with different shows.
But it is funny to think that everyone says "Your OC is too mary-sue" but when it comes down to it, so are a lot of regular anime characters that people adore. <3 Yeah, well that also happens with regular stories/movies along with Anime movies/manga. Although they're still pretty rare. I was thinking of Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess as an anime Mary Sue, but then I remembered that she also have human falts such as being selfish when it comes to Keichi and getting drunk off of Cola. xd ...What about that chick from Hack.//sign? ...i dunno, I don't know that manga very well. But really, when you think about it, most of the popular anime/manga shows don't have mary-sues.

Most good authors get fed up with the feedback they get because people say things like: GET KAG AND INU TOGETHER ALREADY!! or: UR STORI IS TO LONG!!! ...Why the hell would people want to write after reviews like that? I love writing AU's. I actually find them much more challenging than Cannons. Plus, you can create some really great storylines that wouldn't be possible in cannon stories. It just expands the Inuyasha world for me. I love it. ....Of course, then you have the thousands and thousands of: "Kagome's a punk and Inuyasha's a prep! How will they meet?" Or: "Kagome's a prostitute and Inuyasha saves her from killing herself!!!" stressed scream

There is ACTUALLY something called a story line that the author likes to sometimes follow. stressed There is a MUCH larger selection of plots and such to follow, which is why I enjoy reading them so much. 3nodding The boundries are almost invisable when working with an AU. I guess what ruins them is trying too hard to make the PERFECT story and just plain lack of knowledge of the characters and their personalities. No matter where Inuyasha is, he'll be rude most of the time and try to ignore his feelings. No getting around it. For one, those kinds of AU's are COMPLETELY OOC, and two, there are WAY too many of those. stare I mean really, when would Kagome EVER kill herself? Or any of the characters, really, unless they were sacrificing themselves for their loved one(s).

I think one of the hardest -- and best -- ways to develop a character, or to study a character, is to put them in a situation where they must act against their nature. Their outward awkwardness and internal dialogue have to compensate for the OOC action. It's can be a great tool, but it's overused.

Or any of the characters, really, unless they were sacrificing themselves for their loved one(s). Yeah, I like your reasoning of trying to make a perfect story, I think that applies to a lot of fanfiction writers, especially ones that are just starting out. There's also the fact (and I'm a firm believer that EVERYONE goes through this phase sometime in their writing journey) that they try and stick themselves into the character. Not only does this make the character completely OOC, but it ultimately turns them into a Mary-Sue as well. They want the readers to like this character, (thus, liking them as well) so of course they're not going to give the character any faults. If any good writer here on FF.N looks back on fanfictions they wrote a period of time ago, they'll more than likely come across this common mistake themselves. I know I used to do it. ryansgirl4302 I think one of the hardest -- and best -- ways to develop a character, or to study a character, is to put them in a situation where they must act against their nature. I completely agree, which is why I view AU's as much more challanging and enjoyable than canons. ...Not to say that I don't enjoy canons as well. I love them.
