Kohenkyo walked into her bedroom to find Melanie sat at her dressing table, gazing lovingly down at the Natkarian pendant that she had brought home the day before. Mel looked up & got down from the stool where she was sat, bringing the orange pendant to her mother.
"This will be my little sister Mama?" She asked in wonder, holding the pendant carefully in her hands & looking up at Kohenkyo. The color of it was indeed beautiful in the zephirae's oppinion. Kohenkyo stooped down to the level of her child & nodded.
"T'will so, if we take good care of it & love it as one of our own." Kohenkyo said in a sage manner, which was not unusual. Melanie looked down at the pendant again, perplexed at how it sent shards of light off in various directions. She smiled & cuddled it to her.
"If she will be my lovely little sister than I shall take care of her." Melanie responded dutifully. She had longed for another little girl to play with for such a long time now. Kohenkyo took the pendant from Melanie's hands & placed it about her neck, stroking the child's long black hair.
"You can get to know her for a while whilst I make dinner." Kohenkyo smiled & stood up, walkng out of her room & downstairs to make dinner.
Now left alone, Mel sat on the far side of the bed & looked into the amber depths of the pendant.
"I will take care of you...." She whispered with a giggle.
"& you shall be my beautiful little sister." She sighed in a pleased manner. She looked upwards.
"What shall you be like?"
"What will you look like do you think?"
"Will you like games?"

Mel asked questions of the pendant for almost an hour, whispering to it in a secretive & giggly manner. She got no answer, but could sense life within the stone & so was content. Kohenkyo came back up to fetch her daughter for dinner & placed the pendant about her own neck. She looked down at it & smiled.
"No matter who you are..we shall love you."

Kohenkyo awoke to her son Turel's cries that morning at 3am on the dot. Just as she had been ever since he arrived. Her sleep had been disturbed & she was very tired given that Mel had crawled into bed with her at about 1am. The dragonwolf female dragged herself out of bed & made her way to her son to shush him, returning half an hour later to her bed finding that she couldn't drift off to sleep. She got put of bed again & padded across the rooms silently, sitting at her dressing table. She picked up her favourite wooden paddle brush & began to brush her ears & her long brown hair, all the while looking down at the pendant on the table. She could see a tiny & faint glow at the very centre of the orange gem & almost like a tiny heartbeat, it pulsed. Kohenkyo smiled to herself & put her brush down on the table, picking up the delicate pendant & holding it in her hands. A look of curiosity & wonder crossed the vuldra's face as she studied it carefully. Not that there was anything to study for the pendant, save its beautiful stone, was quite plain & unembelished. She took a small cloth from her jewelry box, the type used for cleaning silver, & cleaned the gem's surface & mount. She felt that polishing it was one of the few things she could do to be a good parent, aswell as whispering things to it.
Eventually, Kohenkyo put the precious thing down on her table once more & looked about her. Mel was still asleep & Turel hadn't woken up again. She looked pver at the glowing face of the alarm clock by her bed & realised just how long she had been polishing & whispering to the pendant. Two whole hours! Kohenkyo slumped & smiled to herself. She looked down at the orange gem.
"Looks like I got carried away." Kohenkyo whispered to the stone fondly.
"I had better get some sleep.....before I have to get up & see to all everyone." She added, getting up from her dressing table & walking back to her bed. She snuggled under the covers & looked over at the pendant once more, whispering alomst silently.
"Good morning!"

Kohenkyo was polishing the little gem again in her livingroom, curled up with her feet underneath her on the couch. She polished it carefully, making shoure not to press down too hard for fear of wearing the delicate thing away with her almost constant attentions. Mel was sat looking up at her from the livingroom floor, watching her mother in a fixated fashion.
"Mama?" She piped up finally, a question burning inside her young mind. Kohenkyo ceased & looked down at her daughter, smiling kindly.
"Yes sweetheart?" Kohenkyo replied, her tone loving & fond. Mel held out her hands & used one to point at the pendant.
"May I try for a while?" She asked hopefully. Kohenkyo nodded & passeddown the pendant & the cloth carefully to her angelic child. Mel set about polishing it just as her mother had, talking to the gem like usual. Kohenkyo giggled & picked up her child, bringing Melanie up onto the couch beside her.
"You talk to her too?" Kohenkyo smiled & gestured to the pendant. Mel looked down at the pendant & nodded.
"She might get lonely if we stop talking to her." Mel replies sagely.
"I know I would if you stopped talking to me." She added as an afterthought & nodded her small head to confirm it to herself. The youngster polished the gem's mount carefully, getting off any offending marks.
"Turel gets the mount messy..." Mel mused huffily, looking to her mother. Kohenkyo nodded.
"I know. I shall have to take it off whilst I'm carrying him & put it somewhere else thats safe." She replied. She knew Mel didn't like Turel very much, but she was pleased that she was taking care of this new family member.

Kohenkyo laid the table for dinner, setting out the cutlery & plates. She had the pendant about her neck once more, having found Turel in her room trying to get at it. The infant had bit her when she told him that he could not play with it & so had been sent to his playpen, isolated for his bad behaviour. He knew it was bad to bite people....
Kohenkyo smoothed the black ribbon that held the pendant round her neck & smiled to herself.
"What will you be like I wonder?" She mused curiously, her velvety yellow ears swiveling back & forth.
"Will you be tall? Short prehaps?" She mused further, talking to the orange stone in a curious tone of voice. Kohenkyo stroked it lightly & smiled. She felt warmth coming from the pendant, something that no doubt made her feel secure. Kohenkyo finished laying out the plates & cutlery & immedaitely went to bring out the various bowls of food for each of her children. Salad for Xu, chicken soup for Lantis, Tomato pasta for Melanie, tuna bake for Zephon & spaghetti hoops for Turel. Setting out the variety of dishes, pondering again.
"What foods will you like...?" She mused to herself. She figured that whatever the littles one's tastes were, she would try her hardest to keep her happy. She did so with the others after all.
Looking down at the table & feeling satisfied, she went to the bottom of the staircase to call up to her children & then on to the playroom to fetch Turel.

Kohenkyo was musing over one of her drawings, one that she had been touching up, primping & perfecting for days now. She just couldn't seem to get it right! Kohenkyo slumped at the table & put her pencil down in defeat.
"Looks like I'm stumped." She chckled weakly to the pendant at her side. It twinkled slightly, as if in objection to her statement. Kohenkyo shook her head & smiled.
"Well....I suppose I should keep trying." She smiled down at the little gem, picking it up & gazing over it fondly.
"Lets have another try." Kohenkyo said in a determined tone, putting the gem down again & picking up her pencil. She set to work again, adding things here & there, adjusting like she never had before. Only minutes later, Kohenkyo had finished her piece & looked upon it proudly.
"Amazing what a little encouragement will do." She giggled.

Kohenkyo was outside in the stables, the pendant about her neck & Melanie in her arms. Raziel had grown up & Mel had wanted the pendant to see what a strong & noble creature her steed was.
"Look!" She exclaimed, stroking the orange gem affectionately.
"My Raziel has grown into a big & strong horse now!" She giggled excitedly reaching out & stroking the equus. Mel then looked to her mother.
"Mama, can my little sister have a closer look?" Mel asked, putting on an endearing face. Ko smiled & nodded, taking of the pendant & giving it to Melanie before placing her down in the pen with Raziel. Raziel whickered & lay on the floor beside his mistress, nuzzling her fondly. Melanie held the pendant up to her steed & introduced them.
"Raziel, this is my little sister Lyo!" Mel giggled excitedly, allowing Raziel to nuzzle it. Raziel looked pleased for her. He knew that to have another sister would please her greatly. Mel smiled down at the pendant, cupping it in her hands.
"Even Raziel likes you Lyo!" She giggled again, pressing the pendant to her cheek to warm its cold surface.
"When you arrive, everyone will love you, just you wait!"

After knocking on the door, Keona ran off, so as not to be seen when the owner of the house found her note and gift.

The Note

Dear Kohenkyo,

You have been doing a fabulous job of raising Lyonesse! I was shopping and found this cute gift for her. I hope she likes it!

Sincerly,
Keona.

Kohenkyo awoke that morning & went down to fetch the post as per usual, she was rather groggy still & almost tripped over the soft thing left on her doorstep as she went outside to collect the milk. Looking down at her feet she stooped & picked up the soft thing, allowing her eyes to focus. It was a sheep! The tag said that it was for her dear little Lyonesse! Kohenkyo gave a little squeak of happyness.
Taking the soft thing inside, Mel caught sight of it & rushed over.
"What is that Mama?" She asked curiously, her bright yellow eyes sparkling even at this time of the morning. Kohenkyo smiled & stooped down to her daughters level.
"It is a gift for Lyo from Keona." Kohenkyo replied, showing her the sheep plush toy. Mel let out a squeak of joy & looked up at her mother imploringly.
"May I take it to show Lyo Mama!! Please??" She begged. Kohenkyo smiled & nodded, giving Melanie the plushi toy & watching the girl rush upstairs.

Upon reaching her mothers dressing table Mel picked up Lyonesse's pendant & held it level with the plushie.
"Look Lyo!!! A Present for you to play with when you come out!" Mel giggled in a pleased manner. She rubbed the sheep against the amulet & smiled.
"Its very soft, so I'm sure you'll love playing with it!" She smiled once more & placed the sheep & pendant back in the very special basket that Mel had weaved at playgroup, making sure to snuggle the pendant up to the sheep cuddly toy. Mel began to chatter about all the things that she would do with Lyonesse once she was grown, as she had done every day since Lyonesse had arrived at their home. Mel couldn't WAIT for Lyonesse to emerge! A little sister was just what she had always wanted!

Kohenkyo looked out into the garden from he bedroom window, watching her adopted children play contentedly in the garden. It was a time of peace now that Turel & Melanie had decided to call it a truce. They were not fighting anymore & as such, everyone was playing together without any rivalries or discomfort.
Kohenkyo smiled at the amulet about her neck, kept there for safety aswell as comfort.
"You too will be able to play with the others like this." She giggled, stroking the pendant affectionately. Kohenkyo knew that no matter what Lyonesse was like, she would surely be loved by everyone. Especially her little Melanie! Mel was so excited about having a new little sister to play with. She often found Mel sat with the pendant on her bed with Turel, Lantis & Zephon, all of them whispering excitedly about all the fun they would have together. Kohenkyo let out a contented sigh. She knew Lyonesse would be hapy with her & the others. Who wouldn't with such a comfortable family?

Melanie was sat outside, Lyonesse's Pendant in the lap of her pretty little red summer dress. She was sat under the huge oak outside, singing to Lyonesse & chatting with her about who best to tie ones shoelaces & of course, asking how she should do her hair that day. She often sought advice from the pendant, finding that talking to it made things clearer & helped her to better reach her own decisions.
"What will your favourite color be?" Mel asked the pendant with a giggle.
"I bet you'll love Orange...or maybe black! Black is a very elegant color!" Melanie said, clearly enjoying herself talking to the gem. She looked up into the branches of the tree above her & looked down at the pendant in a mischevious manner.
"One day Lyo, you & me will climb this big tree & hide from the others, then jump down & scare them!" She said, digressing into a fit of giggles, cradling the pendant close to her heart.
"We'll have so much fun Lyo!! You just wait! I'll be the best big sister ever!"

Kohenkyo was sat downstairs in her study reading on of her favourite fantasy novels whilst watching her children in the garden from the study window. She did not fare well in such sunny weather & preffered to stay inside. Beside her arm on the desk at which Kohenkyo sat was Lyonesse's pendant. Kohenkyo glanced back to it evevery page or so, keeping an eye on it & smiling each time she looked its way. She closed her book & let out a happy sigh. She didn't quite know when the little one would emerge, but she would be ready & waiting to care for her when she did.
Some said she had far too many children to take care of by herself, but Kohenkyo thought she was managing just fine. She loved each & every one of them equally & made sure to spend part of the day with each of them doing what they wanted to. She pondered on going out & buying Lyonesse some baby things early, to go with the beautiful sheep plushie that she had been given by Keona. A blanket, a second plushie, prehaps some toy animals & most certainly a soft cushion or two. Kohenkyo smiled to herself as she looked down at the pendant before her. She dearly loved to please each & every one of her children, so Lyonesse would be no exception.

Mel had finally managed to encourage her mother outside into the bright sunshine! She sat with her mother under the old oak & talked to her about how she was going to be the perfect big sister for Lyonesse. She went on for almost an hour, saying how she would share happily & make sure that Lyo was content. Turel joined in with excited giggles & much flapping of his demonic little wings.
Kohenkyo listened proudly to her daughter, who was nearly a child but no less the mature for her age. She was proud to have a daughter that was so advanced beyond her years.
Unable tostand the heat any longer, Kohenkyo retreated inside to cook dinner & take comfort in the cool shadow sof the big old house in which they resided. She spoke to the pendant about her neck again, as if it were a lifelong friend.
"I'll have alot to live up to if Melanie is true to her word you know Lyonesse." She chuckled.
"Alot indeed."

A day passed uneventfully that day, even with the news of Kohenkyo's steed siring a foal or two with his dear mate Rae. Kohenkyo was stuck in her study because of the harsh summer sun & was all the more upset for it all things considered. She wanted to go out & play with her children. Oh well. Soon enough she would have Lyon to take care of & Lyon would not be able to go out in the sun all that much until she was a little older. Babies were delicate things to be handled with care was what Ko supposed. It has been thus when Mel had joined the family & Turel certainly couldn't stay out for long. Kohenkyo pondered whilst watching her children outside. She wanted to be the best parent she could.

Kohenkyo was unwell & as per usual, Xu was left to take care of the household & keep things in order. Lantis was being a noisy pest & refusing to come back in from the garden given that it was a gorgeous day outside. Kohenkyo could hear him protesting & turned over, placing the pillow over her head. The maulet about her neck semed to nestle against her comfortably.
"I'm sure you wont make that much noise." Kohenkyo chuckled weakly, letting her heavy eyelids droop with fatigue. She snuggled down under her duvet & looked at the pendant, holding it out so that she could see it properly.
"Of course, if you did," Ko began with a weak giggle.
"I would hardly deem it appropriate to love you less."

23/07/05

Kohenkyo had taken the pendant about with her during her daily comings & goings. She alot to do now that there eggs to look after & foals to prepare for. The dragonwolf bustled about the stalls in the nearby barn, picking out a perfect place for Alex & his mate Rae to keep heir foals. Kohenkyo had run herself ragged that day, but was managing to stay on top of things none the less. Xu was amazed by her unwillingness to give up until everything was done.
When Kohenkyo had finally finished, she slumped in her favourite armchair in the sitting room & drank down a warm cup of mint tea to help her unwind. She looked down at the pendant around her neck & giggled weakly.
"Now when you get bigger Lyonesse, you can help me out with all these chores." She chuckled. She didn't mean it of course. She always felt that chores should be left to adults, not children. Kohenkyo looked down at the pendant once more.
"We'll have foals by the time you arrive Lyo...I'm sure you'd like to help take care of them." She said softly, her eyelids drooping.
Kohenkyo fell asleep, dreaming peacefully to herself about things to come.
