But dont let Xal's post mae you think catholic hospitals have substandard care. St Mary's here in Reno is a very good hostpital and offers billing programs to those with money troubles.

I burnt the skin off the top of my foot once with scolding hot water, My mother took me to the St, Mary's ER because they give fast immidiet care and almost always have more then anough people and doctors on staff.

Absolutely not. That had nothing to do with the hospital being religious. It had to do with it being a backwards hick-town...I mean..."lower income, rural, agriculture-oriented" town. twisted

And the Catholic Church has every right, under separation of Church and State, to do as it believes is morally right, and not do as it believes is morally wrong.

Oddly, many Catholic hospitals DO dispense contraception (usually a woman who's on it when she's admitted is just allowed to continue taking her own). Religious beliefs don't completely dictate how a hospital is run.

And it is their right to prohibit things based on religious beliefs. But if you disagree, and they're the only hospital in town, well, that sucks, but some people live without running water and they deal with it too.
This post is confusing. Are you saying that it's okay for Catholics to run their hospitals as they like according to their religious beliefs, or that it's not okay for Catholics to run their hospitals as they like according to their religious beliefs?

Yes, in fact, it is too bad if the only hospital in town is a Catholic one that doesn't dispense birth control because they believe it is immoral. Are you suggesting that they should offer birth control just because they are the only ones in town, even though they are morally against it? Are you next going to say that, in a hypothetical situation where a vegan runs the only restaurant in town, they should serve meat and dairy because some people are going to want it?

I also find it rather insulting that you are comparing a town not having birth control because the hospital is morally against it to a town with no running water.

Oh yeah, that'll do it.

I'm not sure . . . if you want to say it's ok for religious beliefs to dictate what religious hospitals offer or do not offer, what if Jehova's Witnesses ran a hospital? Wouldn't they then be entitled to refuse patients who need transplants or blood transfusions?

Yes. Which is why a Jehovah's Witness hospital would run out of business very quickly. lol

As I said, it's separation of Church and State.

Yup. By the legal rights granted to them by the seperation of chuchand state, they coudl if they wanted.

Good lord I hope I never get a Jehova's Witness doctor . . . I hope they don't exist in any position where their judgement on transplants and blood transfusions should be impartial. Actually, I hope they just don't exist, because the only Jehova's Witness aspiring doctor I've ever met had the bedside manner of a wolverine. Actually, no, that's not fair on the wolverine. This girl was much worse. She had a go at a friend of mine because my friend had donated blood. Accused her of not being Christian. I wish I'd been there, I would've had her head bitten clean off ^_^

Anyhoo, in short: Jehova's Witnesses' hospitals, damn scary and I hope they never appear.

From what I understand, there are quite a few doctors who ara JWs...or at least i woudl think so. And i woud also think many of them are in positions where they wouldnt have to reccomend blood transfusions, or preform them.

Oh good. No offence to any JWS out there, but the ones I've met, I wouldn't want as my doctor. Or near me for any length of time, if only for their health and safety ^_^

Same. I've met too many rabid JWs in the past. I'm not against them or anything, and wish them no ill will, I'm just kinda paranoid about them now.

Catholic hospitals balk at providing emergency contraception because the church believes it destroys the life begun when a woman's egg is fertilized by sperm. But scientists say Plan B may prevent fertilization.

The drug also work by stopping the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.

No. It's not that Plan B may prevent fertilization, Plan B DOES prevent fertilization. No egg to be fertilized. No fertilized egg to prevent from implanting. Nothing dies except sperm.

This just makes me so furious. How many times do I have to scream and yell YOU CANNOT STOP A WOMAN FROM ABORTING A PREGNANCY BUT YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO STOP HER FROM GETTING PREGNANT IN THE FIRST PLACE IF YOU JUST GIVE HER THE ******** EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION.

Plan B = fewer abortions. Why, why, WHY is this a bad thing??

stressed

I agree. It doesn't work if the egg is implanted in the uterus and it doesn't end a pregancy but help provent it (it's like a high dose of birth control) and only have 72 hours to take it. But people need to learn about protection.

Plan B® works like a regular birth control pill. It prevents pregnancy mainly by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary, and may also prevent the fertilization of an egg (the uniting of sperm with the egg). Plan B® may also work by preventing it from attaching to the uterus (womb). It is important to know that Plan B® will not affect a fertilized egg already attached to the uterus; it will not affect an existing pregnancy.

So if you believe that human life starts at conception and you use EC, then you could very well be dooming your child to death. It's like...a lot of zygotes (and a bit older too) die because it's just not the right time of month and they can't implant in the wall.

This just makes sure it won't happen.

If you believe that human life starts at conception, like the Catholic Church does, then this is as good as abortion EVEN THOUGH it isn't technically abortion. For abortion to happen, pregnancy needs to be started already.

No, I think they should be allowed to base their services on their beliefs, since they're not supported by the state and the state shouldn't interfere. But there are Catholic hospitals (and other Christian hospitals) that dispense contraception and perform sterilizations and whatnot anyways. I could do some research around my city, as there's a large Catholic population here, albeit one that's mostly quite liberal, and several Catholic hospitals. (I work for a secular one; we stock Plan B in the ER)

I missed the part in the bible where it says "thou shalt not receive transfused blood." Though I do recall something about drinking blood...maybe they think it's the same? neutral

An Adventist wouldn't get very far in a secular medical school...I suppose they could have their own school, and treat other members of their sect, but if my doctor ever criticized me for donating blood, I'd be out of there and demand my copay back.
