The Soldiers response reminded him of what he would have said years ago before he had received all the scars he had and buried the comrades he had lost.
But if it was one thing that Hicks did know was that you should always be thankful on the battlefield when things go your way. Whether it be God, Destiny, or just good Old Lady Luck. The reason doesn't matter only the outcome.
"I can understand you not being thankful. You are not in command of these young men and women. Their lives do not hang in the balance with every decision you make and every order you give. You will not have their deaths weigh on your shoulders like I will..."
Hicks walked passed the Soldier so that they were side by side but facing in opposite directions.
He said quietly so that only the Soldier could hear him "..I have enough things keeping me awake at night and I'll be damned if I lose any of those under my command ever again."
He got into the passenger seat of the APC and waited for Fang to take them to their destination. He hoped that they had enough luck going with them to carry them through this mission.
Hicks laughed slightly to himself and pulled out a cigarrette and lit it. That was a lie. He doesn't believe in luck, fate or God. He believes in his own will and makes his own "luck".
Hicks took a drag on his cigarrette and waited for his comrades to join him. They had a busy day ahead of them. Best to meet it head on.

The soldier took a step forward to the back of the vehicle. He knew exactly what the commander was saying. He cared more about his crew than himself, a trait of a great commander.
The soldier had long forgotten how to feel that way. He cared little about the life of anyone, least of all himself. The soldier didn't really care if he died in combat, and he had no qualms with destroying any amount of life in order to finish what he started.
His tactics were always top-notch, efficient, and useful. But there was that one quality of his that always was his dowfall.
Hicks would never put those under his command in a situation that could cost lives if it could be avoided.
Thats what seperated the soldier from his CO.
He stepped back and inspected the innards of the vehicle, waiting for Hicks to take his seat again.

Jack jogged to the Motorpool, checking the M16 and the Shotgun for malfunctions and reloading them. He felt his still-wounded shoulder, and looked down at his uniform, which was caked in dirt and mud. He hadn't had time to change after being recalled from Requiem, and he hoped that Hicks didn't mind. He stopped near the APC and looked in with the Soldier. "Mind if i tag along sir?" he asked, shifting his grazed shoulder from veiw.

Hicks smiled and eyed the Soldier a moment. It looked like he had just come from a battle and was looking to join another one. Hicks liked his style.
"Of course, Jack. Feel like driving?" Hicks said as he calmy pointed to the drivers seat. "I've already got shotgun." Hicks smiled as he said this.

"Hey, If you don't mind a bumpy ride, I'd love to sir." He replied, taking off his weapons and stowing them near the APC's exit ramp, then sitting in the driver's seat and starting the engine. "So, we doing this stealthily, or are we going in guns-blazing?" Jack asked, looking to Hicks.

Hicks took a long drag and released a cloud of smoke from his lips. He stared at Jack for a moment and then looked at the Soldier.
He let out a sigh and said "We may be able to remain undetected, but it will be difficult. The only way I can see us being able to do it is if we have two of us go into the base first and neutralize as many guards as possible, quietly, and then open the main gate from the inside and back the APC into the base and load as many weapons as we can as quickly as possible."
Hicks was quiet for a moment and then continued "...but if we are seen or heard then the s**t will hit the fan and we will be in the middle of a massive fire fight."
Hicks took another drag on his cigarrete and released the smoke. He threw the remains out of his window.
"Unless either of you have a better idea? I am all ears."

"Sounds good to me." He stated, shrugging and adjusting his equipment slightly. He chuckled, wondering what kind of weapons they'd be getting for the guild. Hopefully, some .50 caliber MGs for the APCs. He decided that he'd look for a couple when they started loading up, and looked back at the Soldier with a nod.

The soldier watched indifferently as his fellow joined the operation. Better than having only two. If three made a crowd, he wouldn't object.
He continued to stand, placing his hand against the side of the vehicle to brace himself for the ride.

"Alright then. Lets get going. We have wasted enough time here." Hicks said as he loaded a fresh clip into his pistol.

Jack nodded and drove the APC out of the garage, heading towards the target base. He brought the vehicle up to cruising speed and smiled. It had been a while since he had driven an APC, and he had forgotten how fun it was to have more than a ton of armor moving over 60 mph over flat terrain into combat. He chuckled slightly and shook his head, his mind coming back to the mission.

((Thank you Yen Shi for getting us out of the garage. LOL.))
Hicks lit up another cigarrette and looked at a map he had brought along for the mission. He gave Jack directions as he needed them but he wasn't that worried. This base wouldn't be terribly hard to find.

((lol, you're welcome.))
Jack saw something in the distance, growing larger by the second. He tapped Hicks' shoulder and pointed to the front gate, which was oddly undermanned. "should we knock first, or just kick in the door?" he asked enthusiastically(?) as he slowed the vehicle, grabbing his own cigarette -a Marlbro- and lighting it. He took a puff, his mind pulling together the options. The gate was virtually unguarded, which meant more men in the base, which also meant that something could be wrong. With that many weapons, and considering the size of the base, ((I'm guessing a medium sized base.)) there should be more men on duty. He shrugged, and waited for the commander's call.

Hicks took a drag on his cigarrette and rolled down his window. He stuck his head outside of the APC and looked at the base for a few moments. There didn't seem to be anyone on guard. Why would that be? Hicks didn't like this at all.
He pulled his head back inside and made a gesture at Jack telling him to kill the engine.
"Alright guys. I think the best way to handle this is to be quick and quiet. We will enter the base and remain hidden as long as we can. We need to scope out as much of the base as possible so that we don't run into any surprises..."
Hicks took another drag on his cigarrette and then cast the remains out of the window and then continued.
"...I don't like the looks of this base. Stay vertical and keep your eyes peeled."
Hicks exited the vehicle and slung his rifle over his back so that the barrel was pointing down behind him. He then removed his pistol from its holster and began moving towards the base and sticking to the shadows as much as possible.

Jack did as he was instructed, then followed Hicks out the back, strapping his shotgun acrost his back, and bringing his M16 to his shoulder. He flicked the safety to single, then followed the commander closely, making sure to stick to the shadows and watch for hidden enemies, or entrances/exits to the base.

The Soldier silently planted his feet on the ground as he exited the armored vehicle.
It now was only a matter of time before they'd be discovered. Hopefully they wouldn't be there for it.
He quickly moved to the shadows, silence being his ally for the moment. He didn't bother getting his firearms ready just yet, it would only be a hinderance if there was nothing to shoot.
Lowering to the ground, he placed his gloved hands to the ground and waited for the commander's next move. Idle hands are the devils workshop. Work them, or they may be your foremost enemy.
