Almost as if in disgust, Mafa spat out the fur and blood she had torn from the lion's shoulder. She scowled, watching him back away. Coward. Mafa sure as hell wasn't going to back out of this one. She advanced toward the pink toned lion's position, head held low and snarling. She could tell that he wasn't exactly sure on what to do. Attack, or run. Whatever his plans were, she was going to make sure that he knew that taking her on would be greatly detrimental to his health.

Low, gutteral growls rumbled from Mafa's throat as she listened to the neandethal speak. He had no right to demean the hyena kind. No right. His words only fueled Mafa's anger, and the more her mind was muddled in rage, the more dangerous she got.

"Mind you, watch your mouth, you disgrace to all animal kind. He is one of my own, I've every right to defend his life. If he was useless, I'd kill him myself. But obviously, that hasn't happened yet. I urge you to reconsider your thoughts."

Mafa's tone was cold and calculating, her words laced with venom. As she spoke, she continued to move closer to the beast. She wasn't about to leave this hyena here. Mafa was often viewed as a heartless beast, and really, she was. But, sometimes, there were situations that she couldn't just walk away from and live with herself. Here was a lion, something she hated with every inch of her strength, trying to murder a young hyena, the very species which she wanted to glorify. She'd kill this lion and enjoy it more than she ever had.

It was then that the little silver pup moved from his curled up position on the ground. He seemed to be gaining courage from not being alone with this monster any more. But, it seemed as his courage was going to far as he lept up, attacking the lion's foot. It would be feeble for him to even try to hurt this powerful beast, the pup was no where near old or strong enough. Making sure she was running at his side, and not head first at him, Mafa charged the lion, jaws snapping to grab ahold of any of the beast's flesh, hoping to deterr his attention from the pup at his feet to her.

There was really only a split second for him to react. He went to bite at the pup, but realised his error all too quickly as the large female came bowling at him again. he roared and tossed thwe pup off with a shake of that over sized paw before side stepping. He growled, this wasn't a fighht he could win, not that he intended to loose, but this dog would make as much of a mess of him as he would of her. It wasn't worth it. He snarled lightly backing up towards the green fields behind him. "That little peice of scum, is it worth your time even rat dog?" He hisses growling and snapping as he backed slowly away.

His ears lowered his mucles tenced, those shoulders showing the mass of mucle he had obtained via training. "Fine, rat turn away I'll kill you too" it was a threat and an empty one too, he could certainly rip a few chunks out of her but neither of them would win that fight. They'd both end up bloodied up. He growls low in his throat, glancing at the hyena pup his tail lashing. It wasn't worth it. "Theres other game for me to play with."

Keeping his posture aggressive, his eyes locked on the big female hyena he slowly backed away from the scene he had created. If he ever found that pup again, he would kill it. He would kill it so swiftly. His fun was ruined, and the female hyena, he could do nothing about the mangey scavangers. "keep your rat" he whispered. "Watch your back you little rat, if I find you again, I'll kill you" he roared this last sentence before he swiftly turned and bolted. This was one fight, he would certainly never mention to anyone.

There was a feeling of weightlessness, and then the sudden hard impact with the unforgiving ground. The pup lay motionless for a moment, gathering his wits and staring at the standoff between his savior? and his captor.

But he'd done it! In his memory of the incident his teeth had sunk deep, through muscle and tendon - in reality, it was probably little more than a scratch on the large lion's paw. But the hyena didn't know, and didn't care.

Neus took a deep breath and stood slowly, wincing in expected pain. But although his muscles ached with exertion and his side hurt where he'd landed on it, his ruined leg gave him no pain... For a moment the pup took this as a good sign. He put weight on the leg, only to have it crumple beneath him, along with his hopes. Something was wrong... he just couldn't feel what it was.

And that meant he couldn't run from this newcomer.

Grim faced, the pup stood silently and waited for the female to speak to him.

Mafa had no fear at all any physical deformation. Scars, welts, gaping wounds, she had no worry for them all. Mafa didn't have to keep a pristine appearance in order to be followed by her pack, or to feel decent with herself. Hell, some war wounds wouldn't hurt. But it seemed this big lion was ready to choose flight over fight, which angered Mafa. She wanted confrontation! Snarling, Mafa followed the lion as he backed away, not wanting to let him go off free.

"Once again, I'd suggest holding your tounge if you don't have words of praise for me. It won't get you anywhere, idiotic creature."

Mafa sneered, her attention fully on the pinkish lion. How dare he even question what her intentions were here? It was her business, not some useless lion's. It was now, that the lion began to run off. And Mafa took after him, until she saw the pup collapse to the ground. With a growl, she halted, looking after the retreating lion with malintent.

"Mark my words, you will be the first to die, shall we meet again."

With this mental note, Mafa stared off into the horizon for a few seconds longer before turning and trotting to the pup. She gazed down at his crumpled form. That lion had sure done a number on this young life. But she had saved him, saved him from an untimely fate, and now he was indebted to her, whether he realized it or not.

"What kind of hyena lets a lion take advantage of him?"

Neus would have glared up at the larger canid, but he felt that that wasn't an appropriate thanks for a stranger who had saved his life. And she certainly had - Neus had no delusions about surviving that encounter without her intervention. But still...

"I wasn't letting him do anything."

The protest was unttered quietly in a neutral, distracted tone. The world around him... it was the same bright green grass, the same shimmering summer sky... and yet, it seemed lit by a new (darker? heavier?) light, if possible. Something was different.

Or maybe he was different. Neus didn't acknowledge his carefree attitude before, but he noticed when it was gone. No... when it was shattered. The pup sighed and eyed his savior. If she'd ment him harm, he supposed he would have already found out. But one thing puzzled him. What was that word?

"... hyena?" Green-grey eyes peered up questioningly.

Mafa's cold eyes ran over the pup, eyeing his injuries. He'd recover, but probably not to his full potential. Trailing over his limp leg, Mafa once again established eye contact. The female glared at his rebuttal to her words, he was in no position to back talk her. Not at all. She stood before him, her icy expression unwavering. Just as she was about to scold him, the young hyena posed a question.

"...Yes, hyena. You know, what you are?"

Mafa frowned. Was this creature dense enough to not know what he was? Sure, she expected that from Kelello, the slave, but that was because Mafa had been beating it into her head that she was in fact not a wild dog. Mafa sighed, looking around. Where were the twerps parents? She hoped they were no where near, so she could claim him for her own purposes, as he pack was always growing. Pups were always the best new recruits, easy to mold to an ideal mental state.

"Well then, who are you? And where is your pack?"

A... hyena? He rolled the word around in his mind, getting used to the feel of a label. He'd always just been Neus. But he was a Hyena too, and so was this female... Absently, he wondered what the Big Thing had been. Certainly not like him, or like the female. But it had four legs, a tail, and ears. Whatever it was, he hated it.

He would never allow it to beat him. He would be stronger.

Neus met her gaze solomnly, but her cold gaze was more than he could handle - his own waivered, then fell to the grass and gravel at his paws. Her questions to him only sparked more questions in his mind, but he kept his mouth shut. He'd seen the look of disdain on her face. He would learn what a 'pack' was, and where it was supposed to be, too.

"Neus is Neus." He answered, completely serious. The pup scuffed a paw in the dirt. "And I have no pack. I just am."

For as long as he could remember, it has just been him. Him and the grass, the sun and the moon, and the cool breeze that blew in when the sun had set. He liked it like that. It was with some pain that he acknowledged the truth - it was time for change. While his body might be small and young, his mind had grown far older in the span of his encounter with the lion.

Mafa kept her eyes glued on the youth as the cogs churned in that little head of his. There was something going up in his mind, but he wasn't letting out a peep. Finally, when he did speak, Mafa tilted her head very subtlely. He spoke in third person, something Mafa wasn't used to. A a second or two passed before she registered his words. She figured he had been living alone, with no one but himself to talk to, perhaps developing this odd way of speaking. His submission was definitely promising,

"I am Mafa, alpha of a hyena pack, and I do believe the pack I own, from this moment on, is where you will call home. Is that clear, Neus?"

With the younger recruits, Mafa didn't even try to butter them up and coax them into joining her pack. This lone pup whose life she had just saved had nothing. But Mafa was doing him a favor. By roping him in, she was giving him something. A sense of belonging. Or at least that was what she told herself.

"And that blundering pink beast was a lion, the most vile of all creatures of the savannah. The lowest of all scum. Don't think for a second otherwise, I warn you now."

"Yes."

After all, where else did he have to go? Home? He didn't know where that was before, but now he had one. And an... alpha? to guard. A leader, he supposed. She might have protected him today, but he wouldn't let her hold to debt over his head his whole life. There would be a day when he had the chance to do the same for her. And when it came...

Mafa's explination broke his thoughts, and they scattered before he could piece them back together. But her words gave him more than enough to think about. He closed his eyes, squeezed them shut, and remembered the pink Big Thing. Now he had a name.

"A lion."

His voice was soft, but a sneer twitched and pulled at his lips. Oh, he would remember them alright. And they would do well to remember him. The pup dragged himself to his feet and stood facing his new alpha. His expression was solemn and emotionless. The twisted back leg remained limp, but it didn't pain him much anymore.

"Where do we go now?"

Mafa tilted her head upward as the pup complied with her words. Brilliant. He would be an excellent addition, given that his leg healed up. Either way, anyone who followed her word was worthy to be in her pack, Mafa deemed. Nodding, the alpha confirmed his words. Lions, the lowest of low. Worth nothing. Nothing was expected of them, other than death. He'd do good to learn the lesson quick. Which Mafa didn't doubt he did.

Mafa almost felt the need to wince as she watched the young hyena stand. His leg was mangled and limp. If the boy ever regained proper use of it, she'd be amazed. But first and fore most, she'd have to get him to where other scavangers wouldn't see his bloody leg as a meal, clean him up so the wound wouldn't kill him from infection. With a nod of her head, she started walking, slowly, so as Neus could keep up. He'd make the journey back himself, prove to her he had the will to go on.

"We go home, Neus. You will recover, integrate to become part of the pack. Grow strong, and we'll take out all those lions. One by one."
