On all the lyric sites I've seen it says "can't." But it sort of makes sense that it would be can't. Like, she keeps haunting his thoughts and he can't get away from her.

I think on the unofficial thread thingy, we were thinking that perhaps she helped him with a crime but then she got too paranoid so he killed her. Or she could have just cheated on him, he flipped and killed her.

Jenny Was a Friend of Mine in a tiny, tiny, nutshell:
In this song, I think he's talking to the police/investigators to clear himself as suspect. He's telling them what had happened: "We took a walk that night but it wasn't the same... We had a fight on the promenade out in the rain..."
But then, he let's some slip by accident: "She couldn't scream while I held her close, I swore I'd never let her go..."
The investigator knows he's the murderer: "And then you whisper in my ear, I know what you're doing here"
He tries to redeem himself, knowing that he had slipped up: "There ain't no motive for this crime... Jenny was a friend of mine"
Lol yeah just listening to the lyrics on Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine you get the story fast xD
