Adurna looekd at him. Her look seemed hopeless. She didn't know if he trusted her. Why should he? She was able to read his mind. And even if she told the truth, he wouldn't believe. This didn't help the fact she was trying to be friendly. She shook her head. This was getting annoying. She could just tell by his reactions he didn't trust her.
She looked at him. She knew he was watching the kits for many reasons just being Prime Alpha he needed to watch his back. The Queen was highest, then Him and the Princess. But if she where male, she would be fighting him now for rank. But she was given this rank for free. Was it really fair? She seemed to be asking herself. Her eyes drifted to the dark wall beside her, her look blank as she thought.

Lying female or not, she had some sense, at least, which was more than he could say for the stupid kits. So it might be bad if a potential threat to him actually had some sense, but at least he would be taken down by a worthy opponent. That was something, at least.
But he wasn't going to let her know his plans. He had practiced hiding his emotions ever since the Queen had taken an interest in playing mind games with him, and he was quite sure that he wasn't letting any of his thoughts of feelings show in his facial expressions or body language.
When she sighed, he wondered if the Princess was upset that he was on to her. She had handled her slip so well he had almost allowed himself to believe it was a coincidence, but it couldn't be. Even though he hadn't known her for that long, somehow that reason seemed wrong, though. But what other reason was there, then? Nothing he could think of.
Even if they wouldn't make it all the way down to Omega, just a few demotions would be good. They both needed to learn, and sometimes there was no better teacher than a few losses, with actual consequences, instead of those stupid spars with nothing at risk, except for a few body parts.
He wasn't going to say anything about how she had brought up his habit of watching others for "no reason". It was just one of those stupid female things, like the mind games.
He took mental note of her wandering attention, but he knew there wasn't anything of interest where she was looking. Which meant that she was probably thinking about something. Or maybe trying to distract him so she could attack? No, she was female, she had no reason to battle him for rank. But instincts such as those didn't realize the gender distinction. A threat was a threat, as far as they were concerned.

She figured sighing hadn't helped her postition much. Looking back at him she had a plastic smile that almost looked real. She knew now he totally didn't trust, her. It was just the feeling she got from him. But she stayed toatlly with teh conversation. She asked her face turned to stoney smirk smile. She was thinking about just getting up and leaving, but then what would she do? Telling the truth to this guy wasn't working, and probably never would.

What was she smiling about? Was she still playing around in his mind? The questions she asked weren't anything like the Queen's, though. Why even be in his mind if she wasn't going to try to find someting incriminating in there? Did she just get that much of a kick from knowing his every thought? Or had he misjudged, and was her earlier statement really just a coincidence? The more this conversation went on, the more he was beginning to believe the latter, and yet...why should he trust her to not use whatever abilites she had?
Because taking him down would do nothing for her, other than maybe a slight ego-boost. But if that was what she had in mind, she would find that the other Alphas were a lot more boring, and a lot less intelligent than he was. If that was what she wanted, she would regret it when she finally found whatever reason she needed to demote him.
Which was stupid. They had all had plenty of time to train, so one of them, at least, should be able to take the others no problem. But no, all of them were too cowardly to attack, even the ones that they knew to be weaker than themselves. He'd prefer hearing about one Damphousse who made sure to fight those weaker than him, than this current lack of fighting. If they were too scared to fight, they didn't even deserve the name Damphousse. They all should go join those cowardly Koivou, in his opinion.

Her stoney smile dropped as she felt like it wasn't nessacary for it. She realized she just plain said that aloud. She shrugged and wondered what his reaction would be.

He wondered why she suddenly dropped her smile. Was it because he was thinking about it? Or was it just because the sad state of the Damphousse socitey was nothing to smile about, and thus something entirely unrelated to what he was thinking?
nothing.>
She fought? That was a surprise to him. He doubted she had fought other Damphousse, though. He would have heard about it from someone, and catching prey was not the same as fighting. Rabbits might be quick, but they were small, weak, and stupid. Even deer, while they might have a size advantage, didn't have any intelligence. Unless she had battled a thinking creature, she hadn't fought, as far as he was concerend. It was a whole different matter when your opponent was able to make strategies and plans, instead of flaling mindlessly for whatever part of your body they could hit in their death-throes.
At least she realized how much privildge she had. That was something. If she didn't even realize how easy she had it, being born into the second highest position in the whole society, then she was unforgiveable. But she did realize that, so there had to be something decent lurking in her, somewhere, no matter how deeply she had burried it with her female pride and abilities.

have fought someone in a fight. But no reamberance comes to me. So I may have not.> She lost herself in thought for a sec. then turned her head.
She wasn't thinking about him and the smile, but it was about the society. She growled she was upset how pathic the Damphousse had became.
She sighed, she really would never know how hard it must be to keep her rank, unless there was one to fight. But she was alone and pretty much born into this. She looedk at him. He desvered his rank, she was given hers on a silver platter. Was this really fair? But if there was other Females, then she would have to worry but right now, she was praticly in paradise.

Wolves and foxes couldn't think, not as the Damphousse could. They were still bigger threats than deer, say, but it still wasn't a real fight. He wasn't going to say anything about her feeling she had been in a fight. He was sure he would have heard if she had been, but he hadn't, so she couldn't have been in any real fight. She could read the thought in his mind, anyway, but if it would help him save a bit of face by not saying it out loud, then so be it.
Pathetic, how he was counting on the favor of a female to keep his rank. But it was the way the society worked. He fought his way to the top, and then had to stay in the good graces of the Princess and the Queen to stay there. If one day they had a whim to demote him...There was nothing he could do but accept his fate, even if he hadn't earned it.
And he wasn't sure if the Princess would be able to take them on, either, simply because she didn't have to worry about fighting, so she might not be as dilligent with training as the new kits, and the disgrace that would come if the second most powerful Damphousse lost a fight to some nothing...It wouldn't be good.
He wasn't serious at all, though. He knew that if he didn't keep his guard up, one day one of those stupid little kits would take his place from him, and he would have deserved his defeat, for not always being on his guard.
Blunt, but true. If she was in his thoughts, then why evade the fact? It was less insulting than telling her outright she was probably delusional, anyway. The Princess would have to work hard to anger the Queen enough to be demoted past the equivalant of Prime Alpha. She might no longer be the second most powerful Damphousse in the colony, but she would still have so much power given to her.

She growled at teh thought.
She knew she would have to train, but the other Princess maybe jsut thinking she's all prefect and nothing else. Not care for anyone but herself letting her power go to her head.
She seemed to throw the question out into the open. There was noone really it was direacted too. And she wished she would have been able to fight anothe Damphousse and win, giving ehr more of teh feelingto fight, and actually a better one for the fact the oppent could think, and actually be a threat. She gave an inwards sigh, knowing she would be sad if she had never had a real fight, but so far there was not a matter of that if there was noone for her to fight. She looek at the Alpha, he was battle worthy and fighting him would be too much of an honor then the other rascals disvered.

She seemed to be strong in spirit, but would she really stay that way once she started training? It would be like learning to fly all over again, except worse. Instead of just shoulder and back muscles hurting from the unaccustomed exercise, everything would hurt. Every part of her body would be sore and in pain when she started training. Assuming she did it properly, and didn't slack off because it was too much work, or she didn't like the pain and the soreness.
It was true that the Princess would be fighting against any other females, but there weren't any, at the moment, so she got to enjoy the spot at the top for nothing.
he said simply, not adding the implied thought of "once you've had a taste of power such as that, of course you never want to let it go".
Most of the winner's wounds looked bad, but they weren't anything but rather nasty scratches, and Xerxes was rather sure all of them would be healed by now.
It was hard to judge those sorts of things. Could Altair now see well enough to fight again? No one but Altair could answer that question.
one soldier in this place who isn't a coward!> Blackheart and Altair exempted. Blackheart because he had taken the initiative, and Altair because he had won. They weren't cowards, but they weren't Alpha material, either. But it truly did look like those two Omega-desving kits were the best the entire clutch had to offer. What a sad sad world it was coming to.

She was going to the ruler of the Damphousse some day, it looked like, and yet she wasn't even willing to admit that they could fix this problem themselves.
The cowardice of the kits, that was within their control. All he needed was someone of a low enough rank to start some fights with them. They had to stop being cowards, and start fighting, and he was going to take this matter into his own paws, if he had to. He was Prime Alpha, and he was responsible for this sort of thing.
But with the way the Queen acted, that option didn't seem that likely. He wouldn't put it past her to demote him just for fun, but he couldn't see her promoting anyone for any reason. And let the Princess complain all she wanted about that thought, it was true, and he was sure she knew it was true, too.
He did wish he had some way to keep her out of his mind. He wasn't sure whether he liked it more or less now that she wasn't commenting on his thoughts. Was she trying to make him forget she had gone back on her word, and that she really was playing around in his mind? Because he had a long memory, and he wouldn't forget something like that. It did serve him right, though, for thinking a female could be trusted.
They have no care to wisen up and be civilized, since they find civilization abhorrent!> It was a good system, really, except for the part where the Queen and Princess outranked him because of their gender. But he couldn't do a thing about that, so why try? At least it was better than being a Koivou. Stupid fat flightless things.
He knew what was going on with the stupid kits, the other Alphas, the Beta, the Princess, the Queen. He knew far more about what was happening in the caves than the Queen did, he was willing to bet. She didn't seem to concern herself with anything but games, toying around with his mind. Stupid females. But even they were better than the uncivilized Koivou.

She sighed. She seemed to be asking herself more then the Alpha. But that was beside the point.
She realized, her life if she wanted to rule this place was deffinately going to be harder then she thought. She looekd at the Alpha. SHe hoped he did, for really right now, she had nothing. Even being the Princess not fully gorwn either, she should at least try to help this place out, adn teh Alpha, still being maybe half- rank to a rank higher then her, he should be thinking something the same. But she didn't know what he was thinking, she was staying out of his mind. Maybe he thought her untrustworthy, but he must totally think the Queen was.
But to us they think uncilvilized, but we to them are the same. We are different. Yet really the only differences are in that we fly, live at teh dark of the night and we fight constently for one person, not really even for ourselves.> She shook her head at that point, now she was talking crazy! What was wrong with her? Did she personally think those, patheticly weak flightless beings had it better then them. A part of her deep inside of ehr said yes, though her Damphousse Pride of her rank as Princess told her no. It made no sense to her.

If she was reading his mind, at least she was learning from it. If she turned out the same as the Queen...Things wouldn't go that well for him. He wasn't going to answer her question. If she didn't know the answer was "nowhere", then she didn't deserve her rank. Harsh, would probably get him demoted, but true. And it wasn't as if he could control his thoughts, anyway. Might as well get kicked down for something good.
<We know that, because we know her. The others don't. To them, she is the ultimate good, their one chance to rise without any effort, so of course they're going to try to get her favor, not knowing how hard it is to win.> He didn't know how the others could be oblivious to the true nature of the Queen, but they were, and if they couldn't find out facts like that for themselves, let them find out the hard way.
He would take any of them on, if it weren't for the fact that fighting not only the Alpha, but the Prime Alpha was far too much of an honor for them.
He was quite sure she had already read the answer to that in his mind, but if she wanted him to say it out loud, then he would. It wasn't anything wrong, it was the simple truth, and so he didn't risk demotion by saying it.
Any entertainment the Queen got that didn't involve going through his mind was fine by him.
made us. If not this particular Queen, then the one before her, and the one before her. Without the Queen, none of us would have been born, and then what?> He might not like the fact that the Queen ruled over him just because of her gender, but however much he hated it, the system did make some sense. Females were born so rarely, so of course it was natural to protect them, and where best to protect them but at the top?
they won't admit the pleasure they get from it, the thrill of battle, the rush of first blood, the feel of your opponents sink under your teeth...They refuse to admit that they like battle as much as we do, and so they don't battle, fearing to become like us. Fearing to become civilized!> He let out a bark of laughter at that. Who but those idiots would be afraid of civilization, of order, instead of chaos?
He mentally filed away what teh Princess had said about the Koivou, though. Was she hoping he would agree with her, and thus allow her to report him to the Queen as a traitor? Because it wasn't going to happen. He was going to keep his rank, even if he had to disagree with the Princess. For once, the Queen's mind-reading abilites would lie in his favor, since he had the memory of this incident, to prove his version was true, and not the Princess'.

Her Damphousse side won teh fight and the little part that wanted her to have their society change dissappeared.
She knew the answer was either nowhere, or probably demotion and then even to Omega. Which, would be a totally disgrace to her. Being a Princess under the Queen's wing and then thrown to Omega? She would never let that happen.
Her stare went blank for a sec but then turned to normal.
The last questions she didn't care if she got answers, she didn't give a crap about how they did. It was probably just dumb luck. A bit of pity tempered her eyes.
She stood up and nodded. She wouldn't leave if he wanted to keep talking, but she promised herself, she would be truthful to those who deserved it and would train to be strong.
