Wow, you're right! eek
According to Urban Dictionary's definitions, "tachi" and "neko" apply in more than just shoujo-ai relationships.
Tachi
Neko
There's some neat stuff on Japanese slang referring to homosexuality on Wikipedia here, too.

X.rainbowflavoredpride.X Exactly. But it's also a term for a girly female in a lesbian relationship.
I mean, have you ever seen a butchy neko-girl? xD I did.
Back in the war.
I don't like to talk about it.
The screams of the catgirl fanboys still echo in my nightmares...

Tachi and Neko Definitions I really don't remember reading that...
Oi...where am I find my definitions then?
Because I've read series with submissive Tachis. x.o
Though, the whole thing about Girl's Love is true. I'm 100% sure of it. Just the definitions I found didn't make that clear enough.

Though, the whole thing about Girl's Love is true. I'm 100% sure of it. Just the definitions I found didn't make that clear enough. Ah, but see, that's where a definition is becoming a stereo-type. From what I have read, a tachi is just the dominant girl. They aren't all butch, they can actually be feminen in appearance but take charge. I myself am like that. I have long hair and wear things that people would consider girl's attire, though I am very dominant in my relationship, with the occasional submissive moment.
Now also, take... um... the movie 'Monster' into an example. Both girls, in my opinion, were both fairly fitting of the 'butch' view. Though the Aileen was deffinitly taking the more dominant role while her girl friend took the more submissive side of the relationship. 3nodding
Tachi and Neko are states of being, not appearance. That's what I've learned. 3nodding

X.rainbowflavoredpride.X But how does that explain the current GL anime? Most lesbian relationships tend to be neko x neko. They do? Maybe I haven't been exposed to enough GL animes just yet to have seem anything other that tachi x neko lovers, but it could just be yet another way of breaking from the sub and dom roles in gay relationships. You know, a way to make the love between the characters seem softer, more loving in a way even. neutral
It's just a matter of stereotypes, I figure. Even with girl x guy relationships, I have seen times where both are parties are submissive or when the girl takes lead. So isn't it logical to expect the same from all romances?

Well, if you read the stuff that Erehar provided, that states that "tachi" and "neko" are used for more than just shoujo-ai relationships--they apply to shounen-ai relationships, as well. That suggests that it's not the "butch" and "femme" look, although it could still be.

Therefore, I shall try to combine all of this into definitions that can be a lot easier to understand.
Tachi= (Meaning Top) The more dominant role in a homosexual relationship. Can also be used to refer to a 'butch'.
Neko= (Meaning Bottom) The more submissive role in a homosexual relationship. Can also refer to a 'lipstick lesbian'.
Hm... I dunno what are the English terms for gay guys who are more girly or masculine, or else I would've added them in as well.
