Adurna smiled. She felt happy. She said with the politeness the edlers taught her to use with teh Queen. She watched the Queen go, and looked around, she saw the darkened cave, and her dark blue fur reflected in the river behind her. Through all teh excitment, she grew thristy again. So she turned and bent down for another drink.

The Queen walked to the end of the cave and saw that the alpha was watching the others. She saw her new princess in training get a drink and that reminded her she too was thristy. She bent down to get a drink of water.

The new Princess finished her drink and stood by the Queen awaiting for her to finish. She looked at herself in the water. She loved her coloration, it was as dark as dark water, and the night sky. And now for the time being she was the Princess. Hopefully to stay. She felt blessed. but said not a word aloud. She looked back at the Queen.

Why did the Princesses need so much training, though? She would lead, when she became Queen, which she would need inherent skill for, something that couldn't be taught, and she would lay eggs, but why would she need to be taught about that? It was simple. The Queen and the Alpha mated, and the Queen laid eggs, and then little Damphousse kitlings hatched out of the eggs. So what else did those in positions of power need to be trained for? He just couldn't see it.

Maybe he ought to hunt down whoever the Queen had in mind for being the next Alpha, and deal with the usurper. But he didn't want to fight right now. He had a rare break to see how the youths were developing, and to make sure that none of them would pose a threat to him. Why go hunting when he might see the little problem itself from his ledge?

Chaos finished her water and looked at her new Princess in training.

Adurna gave a nod and followed the Queen.

Chaos nodded back and walked back to the Alpha.

Which, for him, was a diplomatic way of saying "Yes, and I know you're enjoying seeing me suffer, because you're just a twisted creature like that." He hoped she didn't realize all of that, but knowing her, she probably did. Meaning he was probably about to get punished for insolence. Which would not be fun. At all.

He really didn't want to be replaced, not this soon. He was one of the Three, so why would she replace him with one who wasn't? Replacing him wolud only work to her disadvantage, wouldn't it? It had to, or so he told himself.

Adurna waited for the Queen as she spoke with the Alpha, knowing the polite way, if she left, she would surely be punished, and she didn't really want that to happen. At all. So she sucked in the boredom and waited.

She read straight through him. She knew what he was thinking but didn't say anything she was going to let it go this once.

So, he wasn't getting demoted. Not yet, anyway. He didn't trust what she said about there being no better Damphousse; there probably was, but he guessed the Queen wasn't going to demote him yet, but keep an eye on whoever was superior to him, and have this superior Damphousse ready to take over his position whenever she demonted him the next time he failed. Even though he didn't know how he had failed this time. He had done exactly as she had wanted in the ritual with those stupid wingless ones, hadn't he? So what shortcoming was she punishing him for? Or was this all just for her own amusements? Females were strange and terrible creatures whose minds he could not comprehend, nor did he want to have a train of thought as twisted and as warped as that of a female.

It wasn't kindness, just a simple admission of fact, or the current fact, the fact he was supposed to know about. But what she said about him being the better Damphousse had to be a lie, even though he wasn't supposed to know.

Or was he? Was this supposed to hang over his head every time he made a move, the fact that one wrong step, one wrong word, and he could possibly end up in the Omega's cell?

He hated how his entire fate lay with the whims of females!

He hated how she could read his thoughts as if she was in his head! Maybe that's what the Queen had to train her Princesses in, how to read thoughts. And maybe the ones who lost favor with the Queen were the ones who couldn't read thoughts as well as the current Queen. It certainally made sense.

Right now, though, he wanted he to get the heck out of his mind! He projected animosity towards her, and wondered if she would notice, or if she only knew him well enough to make it seem as if she was reading his mind. Maybe she wanted him to think she could read his mind, but she couldn't, since she just wanted to see his reaction to knowing that not even his thoughts were private anymore.

He still didn't trust her, though. She was above him in rank, and perfectly entitled to lie to him should she choose. He wondered who she had chosen for his replacement. Maybe it was one of the newest kits, since she had taken such an interest in that group.

It wasn't a question, just him venting his frustration at the stupidity of all Koivou-kind.

Adurna heard the conversation but said nothing. When the Queen excused her she gave a bow and left. She ran off into the area where she could fly, once she mastered the art of flying she would be pretty close to free as she could get. She flapped her wings and rose into the air. The cave bottom was below her as she flew to the ceiling. The cave was the only place she could practice until she grew enough to be allowed to fly outside.
