This is not very hard a question.
It is simply because people that don't play the game and probably play Kingdom Hearts instead or just lie about playing Final Fantasy VII, don't actuallly play the game and do not know how to spell it because they haven't seen it in the game. Basically noobs. Lol. Another reason, they are to lazy to spell it right and/or are stupid.
The End
Lol. mrgreen

Because we can't take a good game/anime/manga from another culture without screwing it up one way or another?
getsumei is right too.
edit: Shinigami_Tashi I've owned FFVII sence it was first out. I started playing calling her Aeris but picked up Aerith from a friend who speaks Japanese and sayd that Aerith is the proper translation for it.

Toola-Roola Well, I Know the Two Different Variations But Some People I Know Spell It Different Ways..... How many people missed this post? She KNOWS the variation, what she's asking is why people spell it in a way besides Aeris or Aerith... Personally, I think they're just bad at spelling.

I took Japanese for two semesters in college, so I'm no expert, but I have to agree with everyone who mentioned things about the "TH" and "L" sounds in Japanese - they don't really exist in the way we think about them. Additionally, there are very few consonants in Japanese that don't have vowels after them. One of the only exceptions is the character for "su" which is often just said as "s" -- that also happens to be the character used to replace the dipthong "TH." As someone else mentioned, the "L" is complicated too. It isn't really an "r" sound either, its somewhere between an "r" and an "l" sound in english. So its a linguistic issue. They could have tried to either make the translation uniform - or keep it Aeris, but instead we have confusion. Oh well. In Kingdom Hearts it did bother me that they spelled it Aerith. I wish they'd kept the games uniform at least!
As for Sephiroth... it may just be a coincidence but Sephiroth the name for the spheres on the three of life in the Kaballah (Jewish Mysticism). It is worth mentioning that it can also be spelled Sephirot, Sephira and a couple of other ways which are all technically correct in terms of the Kaballah (also spelled Quabala), though it could all be wrong for FFVII. The reason I don't think this is just a coincidence -- though it could just be that someone liked the names -- is the fact that one of the sephiroths on the tree of life is named Tifareth/Tifaret. So whoever liked Sephiroth probably like Tifa, too. For those who might care, Tifareth represents Beauty or Harmony and is the sphere of equalibrium and balance. It's weird stuff, but I thought there had to be a connection.
Just interesting random stuff. I know, I'm a huge dork.

There are two ways to correcly say her name Aeris/Aerith, but personally i go with Aeris because that is how it is spelt in the instruction manual and the strategy guide.
