All three cakes finished and Malkav looked them over skeptically. He'd watched as each chef deviated far from what he would consider an acceptable recipe but he wasn't so closed minded as to think his way was the only way. He would try each and give them a fair chance. If even one met his standards, they would have proven themselves.
The first cake he tried was small and more chocolate than cake. The frosting was too thick, again with the chocolate chips. After forcing down a bite, he just shook his head and dismissed the chef. "You'll need more practice. You cannot make up for flavor and substance with chocolate chips, dear."
The second cake was quite an improvement on the first but was still missing something. The frosting was a little bland but the cake had a nice texture that almost made up for it. "Not bad, but a little milk will make your frosting much creamier. With a little more practice, you will make a fine chef."
The last cake, however, had Mal finishing his piece before even commenting. While this chef had deviated a bit from his recipe, she'd managed to balance the ingredients in a way that was nearly as delicious. She hadn't over done it with the chocolate chips and though her frosting could still use a little work, the cake more than made up for that.
"It would seem as though I saved the best for last," he complimented the chef. "This is quite lovely and I'm certain your new companion will agree." Stepping back from the group, Malkav leaned out the back door and called in a fully grown Heila who, unlike the others they had made, came out with a pair of small, feathered wing. Leading the Heila over to the chef, he said, "You've certainly met my standards but the final choice will be left up to the Heila."
The winged Heila took Mal's cue and tried a piece of the cake. Its teal eyes lit up and its wings fluttered with excitement confirming that it too agreed.
