⊰aerykah - sampson⊱ Aerykah shrugged. It's not like she didn't try to enhance the cafeteria food in her first year to make it look or taste more appetizing. Part of the reason why she insisted she cooked for everyone. That, and the fact it made people happy. Food brought people together.
She laughed at Averill's admittance to doing homework. It wasn't unlike an Ekat to want to do that. He probably was the only one in the school who had decent grades this year. "That'd be awesome if you could. You'd be great to help me." Watching Averill backpedal was too funny, and she just smirked at him.
"I'm planning what I'm referring to as 'The Heist', which is essentially where we steal and replace all the food in this Dining Hall. Salt for sugar. Flour for cornstarch. That sort of thing. I know it's not exactly your cup of tea, but I promise this is all in good fun. We'll give everything back in a few days, I swear." Aerykah explained, eyes sparkling. "However, since it's such a huge project, I'm gonna need more than just you to help me..."
She did have every intention to give the food, at least the stuff that didn't spoil, back to the kitchen. Maybe.
Yani yawned as she walked into the dining hall. She closed her sketchbook she was drawing into on the way here and rubbed her eyes as she stopped. "Is it really lunchtime already?" Yani murmured as she stretched and looked around for people to join. She saw Aerykah and smiled widely. Jogging over to Aerykah, Yani noticed an unknown face with the Tomas House Rep.
As she got closer, Yani heard something about a heist and stealing and got even more excited. Finally she reached them, "'Ello Aerykah. Whatever you're discussing, I'm in," Yani said with her open smile. She then whipped around to face the unknown person and held out her hand. "'Ello there. I'm Yani, first year and member of the house with an abundance of pillows." She smiled politely with a tilted head waiting for the other person's name.

Averill Hammershod
Averill looked pretty appalled at the mention of a food heist, and wondered if he would ever feel safe again when he made a cup of tea. "You do know we're in the cafeteria right now, right? Like, people can hear us. There's no muffling spell and you still have ..." He looked up at Aerykah and then away slightly "..er...You still have that damn spotlight on you-" He wondered if it was the buildings way of pointing out a dangerous criminal escaping, rather than a stage spotlight. The spell probably wasn't that advanced, but he gave the non-ceiling a suspicious glance, just in case.
He looked over at the girl who jogged up so enthusiastically and decided to join in Aerykahs disruptive idea. "Uhm, hi, I'm Averill Hammershod, first year as well!" He blinked, not remembering her from any of his classes. He did sit up the front and pay close attention to his work, though. He wagered that if she wanted to get involved with Aerykahs pranks, she probably was one of the people who sat up the back of the class. "Um, which house has the overabundance of pillows?" He reassured himself that it wasn't Ekaterina. There was no way he'd be THAT ignorant of another firstyear girl living in the same house.
He looked up at Aerykah again, reiterating the situation for Yanis benefit. "I think switching the cafeteria foods around isn't a good idea at all." He stated, knowing that was the right thing to say. But even as he said it, he felt a chance to socialize slipping through his fingers.
"But, uh, I guess... the food can't get any worse...?"

⊰aerykah - sampson⊱ "Averill, relax! Seriously. It's kind of expected I'll do a massive prank near the end of the year anyway. Besides, there's only you, me, and Yani now here too." Aerykah said nonchalantly, turning her head to watch Yani walk over to the table. "Hell, even if I get tossed into Soulstone's office, it's not like he can do much to me anyway. We've had a few talks in past years about my troublesome-yet-mostly-harmless behaviour anyway." she grinned.
When Yani finally got to the group, she smiled and nodded in greeting. "Still got that pillow problem, huh? End hasn't done s**t about it, I assume." noting with that, Aerykah pictured in the back of her head the image of Muna and End having a pillow fight. Seems legit.
"You're in? Sweet. Glad to have you aboard. Good to get the first years involved in stuff... Hey, this way you guys can actually get to hang out more often. I rarely see either of you around anymore. Aery wasn't sure if this was because these two were actually concerned about their academics/arts, or if it was because they didn't really know anyone yet. Aery already had that privilege with most of the people around campus.
Her thoughts were interrupted when Averill spoke up about it being a bad idea. Sure it was - hell, Aery hadn't done anything this massive since her first year. All the pranks in the previous year were dorm-related only... she had marked all the book covers in the Ekat dorms with pink (washable) dye, she had short-sheeted everyone in Lucian. Regardless, she had heard about a summer camp doing this back in NY State, and she desperately wanted to try it.
"Look, I agree with you Averill. It probably isn't the best idea. And if it causes something really horrible to go on, I'll cook for that person who gets affected for the rest of the year. I seriously doubt it'll get to that freaking point though. Look, it'll cause some laughs. Possibly grossed out faces. Nobody's going to die. I'm not serving rotten food either. That's just disgusting... Oh wait you said a half-yes? I'll take it."
Over at the Lucian table sat Gilrin. She seemed to be ignoring her soup in favour of writing a letter. She seemed to be putting as much attention as she possibly could into it but she was still easily distracted by the other goings-on in the hall. Aerykah's entrance- for example -got her to raise her head for a second, making her lose exactly what she was trying to write for a moment. She, from that point, found herself unable to stop overhearing the conversation happening over at the Ekaterina table (either because her elf ears were just too good or that eavesdropping had started to become the norm for her that she did it without intending to now). At first she tried to background it and get back to her letter, but as the conversation went on she just got too interested to ignore it.A food prank? s**t, that could be fun. I'll finish this s**t later. Sorry, Em,she thought as she stood up, folding up her letter and headed to the group.
"So, I heard you were planning s**t,"she said upon reaching the group."Mind if I join in?"In truth, she hardly knew any of these people. She knew Aerykah just because of that one dinner that she served. Averill she'd met a couple of times but he never really stuck around. And Yani? She had literally never seen this person before, she only knew her name via eavesdropping moments earlier."Oh, I'm Gilrin, by the way. First year Lucian. No need for introductions in return because I kinda ******** overheard it all."

Averill Hammershod
Averill stood up out of his seat when Gilrin practically bounded over and signed up. This group was getting bigger by the second, and he didn't want all the attention drawn towards Ekaterinas house table. "Alright alright if you're all so bent on doing this, could we at least not talk about it here?" He scratched his sideburns in annoyance and tucked his notepad into his bag.He left the soup there, its steam having now turned the same strange brown colour as the liquid in the bowl.
"Lets go to one of your common rooms, or a spare classroom, or studyhall or something." He suggested, looking around the dining hall. "If too many more people hear about this, there won't be anyone left to prank." He stated matter-of-factly, trying to think of it like a project rather than an actual breaking of the rules.
"Nice to meet you Averill! Janus is the one with the pillows," Yani turned briefly to Aerykah, "I told End that I could take all the pillows as my bed so he doesn't have to move them," Yani smiled. She loved the pillows in their dorm and had turned them into kind of a nest for herself. Most times since Yani moved in to the academy she had fallen asleep in the common room in the pile while drawing. She turned back to Averill,"I'm still not used to waking up early so I kinda haven't made it to most classes yet..." Yani rubbed the back of her head and laughed nervously. She didn't want to let on how bad she was at keeping up her grades because she was constantly drawing, eating or sleeping but it wasn't that hard to figure out if you had a class with her.
Yani heard the elf introduce herself and turned to Gilrin, bowing slightly in greeting. "It's nice to meet you Gilrin! Sorry if we were bothering you, but I'd be glad if you joined us." Yani ignored Gilrin's stronger language and held her straight face — or, to be more correct, her neutral smile.
She nodded as Averill spoke and quickly wrote something down in her sketchbook then closed again. She shifted her weight to one leg and pulled her bangs out of her eyes."I'm with Averill on this one. We do want someone to prank, so where should we head off to?"

Averill Hammershod
The ground shook violently. Averill tripped over the seating, tried to grab the table but instead knocked his bowl over and ended up underneath the table, covered in his strangely coloured soup. "What was that!? We shouldn't have tectonic activity here!" He complained, a tinge of fear entering his voice as he picked the bowl from his hair.
As soon as the tremors stopped, the headmasters announcement rang throughout the school. Averil sat stock still underneath the table, listening to it closely and carefully and trying to pay as much attention as possible.
By the time the announcement had finished, everyone else in the hall was halfway to the door, and he could smell smoke. "I'm coming--" He yelled out after them, as he climbed out from under the table, just in case they were wondering. Nobody looked over their shoulder or anything, but he did think that Aerykah had probably heard him.
Everyone was gone by the time he started heading out of the dining hall. You're supposed to stay orderly during an emergency, right? He thought to himself, trying to force his legs not to run or freeze up as he made his way down the tables towards the door. You're not supposed to panic. The magical ceiling rolled with thunderclouds of sickening dark greens Don't panic The non-ceiling was billowing and rolling now, all shades of black. Yes, the others ran off, but I'm going immediately to the Oak without panicking and that means I've just got to put one foot in front of another.. Lightning struck between the clouds, and was that actual thunder?
The smell of smoke from outside got stronger, and there was the sound of something exploding? Collapsing? Averill forced himself to take in a breath as he walked, but it was shallow and cut itself short. Just follow the rules, pay attention, be cautious, and you won't be as likely to be injured... He told himself. Unfortunately, the rules didn't cover a dragon attack. From the opposite end the dining hall, heavy rain began to fall, extinguishing the floating flames which gave the last of the light to the room.
Averill noticed he was holding his breath as he put his hand on dining room door. Taking another small breath, he headed out towards the Oak.

xxxxIf Asphodel was still a teenager and somebody had told her she was destined to die in about a month, the first place she would most definitely hit up was the mess hall. Gorging herself on food had always been a secret dream, one kept carefully tucked away because she had to have a strict diet if she wanted to keep her cute figure.
It didn't matter now. Her head felt dizzy, her magic reserves felt exhausted, and she was drained and annoyed and probably closer on the verge of death than she would have otherwise liked to be. Asphodel was an excellent worker, doing all of her tasks promptly and efficiently (if she wasn't using it to bully Slater relentlessly) but she needed some goddamn food if she was going to get anything done.
Weakness overruled pride, and so she stepped into the dining hall with feigned primness. She swayed as soon as she shut the door behind her, a wave of sudden weakness overtaking her body. Asphodel winced and pushed a hand to her head, letting her demeanor disappear for a flicker of a second. ********.
This sucked. Who the hell was she going to convince to be a test subject in this sorry state? x

"Miss Bishop?"
Yvonne stood in the mess hall, a package of instant coffee tucked under her arm for Amanda. Tomas had run out of caffeine under the fast pace of its consumption. Everyone (except Violet and Din) seemed to be feeling the strain of the toxic air they'd inhaled. Even Miss Bishop, she realized, as Asphodel swayed. She had little fondness for the CEE, but felt a stab of empathy for the small woman.
"Are you alright? I could get you a glass of water. It's not any trouble," Yvonne offered. "Ga-- Mr. Runesteam says staying hydrated is good in general, especially for a headache or dizziness."
She set the container down on the table and smiled kindly. Yvonne hadn't heard about much good coming from any trips to Miss Bishop's office and she likely had an agenda of her own with the CEE's dealings, but she had no personal vendetta against the therapist. Besides, it looked like she wasn't feeling well. Magic wasn't the only thing that made a good healer, and Yvonne wanted to be the best one she could.
"I have some aspirin back at the dorms,"she added."In the first-aid kit. There might be a medkit in the kitchens too. Non-magical medicine isn't exactly built for this, but what cure is?"
A nervous laugh escaped her. Yvonne almost wanted to ask if the CEE knew how they were going to approach the problem, but didn't dare breach the topic. She nervously thumbed the edge of the box of coffee.
xxxx The sudden call of a student's voice had Asphodel quickly regaining her composure, stiffening up for just a breath of a second. She turned halfway, ready to play the cheerful act until recognizing the student who had called out to her; Miss Lorendi, the head of the Tomas house.
Asphodel blinked, adjusting her glasses before giving a little exhaustion strained smile. "Ah, Miss Lorendi! What a pleasant sight." She greeted sweetly, voice taking on it's usual soft lilt. Asphodel gave the girl a once over, taking stock of her appearance. "You cut your hair. It's a very cute look." Asphodel complimented, glancing behind Yvonne. There was nobody tagging along with her, which was a little bit of a surprise. Asphodel rarely ever saw the girl alone. Tomases were like that.
Well, whatever. If an opportunity wanted so desperately to fall in her lap, then who would she be to not take it?
It was scientifically proven that having others do small favors for you would increase their fondness. "A glass of water would be absolutely wonderful, thank you." Asphodel replied, giving a little nod.
She paused at the girl's offer of aspirin. Hmm...were students allowed to possess non prescription drugs on campus? Asphodel couldn't quite remember. Well, Yvonne was a human, so it was fine. "Aha, I'll have to pass on the offer of aspirin, though you really are sweet. I'm simply feeling a bit tired, no need to worry about an old woman like me." Asphodel gave a light little laugh, curling her fingers up in her dress and tugging on it in a girlish manner.
She lingered at Yvonne's last statement, schooling her facial muscles to soften further. "What cure indeed," Asphodel said with a small sigh, letting some of the stress she had been feeling leak out into her posture. "Actually, I just came out of a meeting regarding that exact thing." She admitted with a tired little smile. "I suppose you're curious, and personally I think the students should be aware of the actions we take -- though, ah, don't mention that to my coworkers, they probably wouldn't like it -- we decided on trying to attempt a serum of our own." x

❥xViolet could literally feel her anxiety rising with every passing day. The knowledge that you were dying a lot faster than you were supposed to could do that to a girl.
Violet was unused to the idea of death; there had been very few deaths in her apartment complex all her life, simply because elves' lives were extraordinarily long. Violet was pretty sure there was a couple on the third floor that celebrated their 234th anniversary before she left for school. She hadn't written home to her mother; Mama Summers would panic. Bad enough losing one daughter.
However, today Violet was on a very important mission, so she pushed her anxiety down and rushed through the dining hall doors. It took no time for her to see Yvonne, and a few more seconds to rush up and attach herself to Yv's arm.
"M-Miss Yvooooooonne!!" Violet wailed, tears visibly threatening to drop from her eyelashes. "Ch-Chang got stuck i-in the toilet and M-Miss Bambi is c-crying!! You have to help!!!"

Yvonne smiled and touched the ends of her hair, flattered. Miss Bishop was probably the most polite of the CEE, and certainly the most pleasant to deal with."Thank you for noticing! It has been a few months, so I may need it trimmed soon."
It took her only moments to retrieve a glass of water from the kitchens. She liked being taken up on her offers, especially since the explosion. She wanted to do things that made her feel useful. Yvonne offered the glass to Asphodel. "Old? You don't look a day over twenty-five, Miss Bishop."The therapist truly seemed ageless to her, with her girlish manner and attire.
What Asphodel said next was both surprising and unsurprising to Yvonne. Had they made an active counter to the miasma? She didn't doubt their magical ability to accomplish it, but the fact that the CEE was finally doing something was stunning."A serum? Have you tested it y-"
She broke off at Violet's sudden appearance. Her balance swayed a bit toward Violet when she clung to her arm. After being along for a few minutes, Yvonne really realized just how attached at the hip the Tomases were, but it wasn't as if she minded. Violet's voice was high with panic, and it made her heart squeeze knowing that even though Violet was naturally skittish, it wasn't normally to this degree. She brushed a thumb under Violet's eyes to catch her tears and smoothed her hair back to calm her.
Bambi's pig was stuck in the water? Her immediate solution would have been to waterwield him out. If nothing else was working, she would, but only after they had tried pulling him out. She really hoped the toilet was empty when he fell in. And wasn't he supposed to stay dry? Yvonne pressed a hand to her cheek, thinking.
"I'll be there in just a second, don't worry. You've tried the plunger, right? It's beneath the sink. Either way, I'll get him out. I just have one more thing I want to talk to Miss Bishop about."
She turned back to Asphodel with a sheepish look on her face. Kids these days, literally dying with every breath and getting their pigs stuck in toilets. It was an admittably unrelatable situation.
"Sorry to break off like that. What was I- oh! Who tested it?"
xxxx"Hehe, of course. I've always been a fan of short hair." Asphodel admitted, taking a seat in one of the chairs at the end of one of the long tables. She smoothed out her skirt, giving a grateful smile and a small 'thank you' as Yvonne returned with the water.
She really was a sweet girl. Asphodel wasn't fond of kids, but even she could acknowledge that much. Especially when she complimented on Asphodel's age, though she was already aware she looked young. It was the damn twintails.
Still, she blushed as lovely as she could manage and put a hand to her cheek. "Oh, that's really quite sweet of you. I hope I didn't sound as if I was fishing for compliments." Asphodel said, twirling a curl of her hair.
She waited for Yvonne's curiosity to get the better of her, waiting with a knowing smile and preparing to respond before Violet suddenly bust into the Dining Hall. Asphodel's shoulders jerked a little in surprise and light apprehension at the sight of her. Ugh. An elf. Asphodel despised elves. She gave the girl a warm smile, waiting patiently and producing a handkerchief out of her pocket. Well, the more test subjects the better, right? An elf and a human technically made a half-elf, so Benjamin would just have to settle for this.
"Oh no, it's perfectly alright." She said graciously, offering Violet the handkerchief. What a damn cry baby. "You can use this if you like, Miss Summers." Asphodel said kindly. "Children have so much to stress about these days, hm?"
Asphodel paused at Yvonne's question, face getting considerably downcast. "Well, we haven't managed to acquire any test subjects yet. We haven't even developed it yet." She said slowly, tilting her gaze down. Asphodel gave a little wobbly, unsure smile.
"Mr. Lockwood told me to find volunteers from amidst the students, but...oh, how could I ever try to heckle a student into volunteering for such a risky idea? " Asphodel gave a troubled little laugh, pushing two fingers to a temple and massaging the skin there. Her headache was no feigned occurrence. She was feeling weaker by the damn moment and it was a pain in the a**.
"Ah, but--I really shouldn't be unloading my troubles onto a student of all things! Especially seeing as I'm a therapist, how embarrassing." Asphodel finished her glass, standing up and shaking her head at herself. "I'm acting shamefully, aren't I? I do apologize for talking for so long, it appears you have places to be." x
