"Vince...?" Lydia began to break down as the adrenalin ended and the left over fear returned. She didn't have anymore control once she was pulled in. A place safe and warm. A place that didn't belong to her. That never would. And the feelings of the day before, with Anais, returned with that fear of being helpless. As the pokemon slid out, with Jagger completely exhausted, she clung on as if for life and began to have a full break down. "I was so scared," She wept. "I was so scared and I couldn't do a thing about it! I couldn't fight... I was useless!" She cried harder, even more than she shook. "If I had brought rayquaza with me... If he'd gotten his hands on it--or suicune! ... I'm so sorry..." She couldn't stop crying.

She'd never been left to fend for herself. With every event of danger, she always had all her pokemon, or someone beside her to protect her. But this... This just proved to her how helpless and defenseless she really was. As much as she liked to imagine herself being a pokemon hero, she couldn't even protect her cubone... And she even thought of handing suicune over for a moment! What sort of hero was that? No... She was just... You're such a wimp! (Lili would say) She was just a little girl. A little kid that got knocked around, kidnapped, bruised and cut. She wasn't a hero in any way, shape, or form. She was just... Lydia. "I'm so stupid, I should have never come alone..." She murmured. "I'm so sorry..." That's all she could say after that. She couldn't stop apologizing. Trying to erase what had happened, but sinking deeper into despair with each time she said it.

Safe & Sound

User ImageLocation: ~ Avanced Battle Tactics -> Dorm Room ~

Maria walked up to her dorm room and opened the door. She was so happy to be back upstairs. Walking into her room she dropped her stuff by her desk and collapsed on her bed. 'Ah this is perfect.' she thought a soft smile playing on her lips. Just as she began to relax her pokemon decided to come and play. "Dew!" he cried out. Just then Ditto decided to transform into Dewgong look alike. "Come on guys I don't need two of you." Maria whined before sliding out of bed and letting out her other two pokemon. Ditto then turned into a Snivy.

The two Snivy's played with one another as Maria went and changed into something more comfortable then her school uniform. One Snivy being more of a jerk tripping the other Maria could tell right away which one that was. "Now Snivy don't be like that." she said picking him up and then picking up her Ditto. Growlithe watched from the corner of his eye as he rested his head on the edge of his dog bed. "I want you all to get along." she said placing them down on the bed. "Now can we try and relax for like ten minutes?" she asked them.

Getting nods from all her pokemon Maria set her head down on her pillow. 'Peace and quiet...' she thought. Suddenly a sound like something hitting the ground came to ears. Sitting up she saw Dewgong and her jar of treats from her health care teacher. "Dewgong..." she muttered. Maria just couldn't win.

[August 18]
Lydia sat up quickly, waking from her nightmare and having to work just to catch her breath. Her heart was racing. But the room was quiet. All of her pokemon were just barely waking up, probably from her shriek as she woke up herself. "It was... It was just-just a dream," She told herself. But the thing was: it wasn't just a dream. That really did happen. It was that day. Team rocket was a threat so far away, it didn't seem real; but that day... That day there was a real threat, and it was right there in Adell!

Lydia didn't go long into the memory before she found herself crying. Because he didn't disappear like team rocket. He was still there! He went into the shoppe! He touched her, right there--he was still real! And she was still afraid. "I'm sorry you guys," She sniveled as she caught her pokemon looking up at her with little worried expressions. "I'm fine... It was just a bad dream." She fell back in her bed, looking up at the cieling. It was quiet. But the silence was broken as her pokemon snuggled against her to comfort her, needing to be reassured--even Marvin!

But then I met a wonderful angel!
If I ever forgot to say it: Thank You

"There is it! Phoenix Academy..." Lydia gazed out the window of the sky-ship. "I can't believe I finally made it! Wow..." A bell chimed, presenting the headmistress in a transparent image.

"Hello. Welcome to phoenix academy. I am Anastasia Phoenix, headmistress of your new home to future tamers. Those of you on board have proven yourself in strength, courage, and ability. As you know, our world has come into the longest running peace since the DARK incident. It is up to us, as Tamers, to uphold this peace, and keep the DARK at bay. Welcome. And try to stay alive."

"She seemed... nice," Lydia muttered.

The shuttle landed, letting the new attendants off and onto their new home. "So cool!" Lydia jumped up with excitement. "There's so many people! And so many weapons! And I wonder what sort of BEASTS they all have... Woa!" Had she been paying attention, Lydia might have noticed the green haired girl in her path. "Ow..."

"Hey watch it!" She called with an annoyed tone.

"S-sor--"

"Don't you know to look where you're going? Supposing I was summoning my BEAST? Do you know what might have happened!?"

"Hey I said I was Sorry!"

"Sorry doesn't cut it. BEASTS aren't like pets! They're the manifestation of our soul into a form with our unique energies. Mine is a Tyranitar, fully developed--which would spell out disaster if I had been summoning it!"

"Ya, it shows..." Lydia frowned and crossed her arms.

"For future reference, you best be on your guard. We're all here to fight off Shadow BEASTS, not play around and have a tea party." With that, the green haired girl left.

"Sure thing your highness!" Lydia muttered, sticking out her tongue.

"It's Haruno." A tall dark man came up. "Iris and Mizuko Haruno. Twins. I wouldn't take it personally. And I think you dropped this..." He handed her back her chain whip.

"Flashfire!" Lydia snatched it back to hug tight. "Hey thank--" He was already leaving by the time Lydia got around to thanking him. "Ya..."

"Will all first year students please report to the ballroom for an important announcement." The speakers echoed across the campus.

"Huh?" Lydia looked back. "I wonder what they want this early?"

There was a lot of chatter in the ball room. It didn't look like anyone really knew what was going on. "Hello." The headmistress stood at the front. Beside her was Professor Reyes, a renown Tamer, and Professors Ezra and Lyon--Famous for having their classes with top scores and performances! Lydia was in a crowd that stood before the peak of greatness in the Tamer world! "I know that each of you expected to get comfy and know your way around the first day, and that this gathering must seem strange..." The doors closed and locked. "But time is of the essence and we cannot guarantee that all of you will make it. As such, your initiation testing will begin today." The chatter returned, filled with worry and disgruntlement. "All of you will be sent to the Wilting Wood. There, you will pair up with the first person you meet with, and will have to make it back to Adell by your own methods. Be warned that the danger is very real, and if you are not prepared: you will most likely die. Thus, is it greatly encouraged that you get along with whoever you pair up with for the best odds of making it back alive. Those of you who make it back will be rewarded with a place in the academy, and benefit greatly in a team made up by your partner and another pair best decided by us. Happy trails."

"Oh no! Vern! VernvernvernVERN!" Tera jumped around in a frantic worry. "What if we get separated!? We have to think of a strategy to make sure we partner up." Vern just sat with a smile and worried brow. "Oh! What if we make Pidgy calls? No... Pidgy are everywhere. That won't work."

"Tera, calm down. I'm sure we'll be fine--" The entire room vanished, being transported far above the Wilting Wood. Trees spirring out of the ground like spikes out of a desert, hard floor; it gave the illusion of life from above. But the ground was hard, dry, and unforgiving.

"How are we supposed to land!?" A girl with cotton-like hair cried out as she fell.

"Flashfire!" Lydia whipped around her chain-weapon, grabbing a tree top and pulling herself around.

Another boy with red hair and a boy beside him with brown hair each used their BEASTS magic to lay out landing points as they decended.

"Oh. That's how."

User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image

Lydia landed with a rolling tumble onto her feet. "Fweuh! That wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be," She said aloud. "Wonder where everyone else landed... Better yet, where's Adell?" She looked around. But all she saw was hard dirt and trees. "Ooooookay." She brought out her chain whip again, this time to use for climbing up. Near to the top, she could see better. "There it is! Adell! Wow... that's far..." She let out a sigh.

Exposed, a black fearrow cried out and swooped down. "Time to go!" She jumped down quickly, falling from branch to branch until she got close enough to the ground to run. "That DARK almost got me! Gotta find my way back quickly!"

"Teraaaaaaaaaa! Tera?" Lydia ran right into a boy coming from the other side of a huge tree. "Woa!"

"Oof!" The collided. "That's the second time today..." She whined, looking over and meeting eyes with the boy. "Um... Hi?"

"Hi..." He gave a disappointed look.

"VERN? VEEEEEEEERN! Where are you?" Tera ran through the Wilting wood. A black Ursaring appeared, halting her search. "Shoot!" Which is exactly what it did with a black hyper beam. Tera rolled to dodge it. "Looks like I don't have a choice here, do I?" She muttered, bringing out her staff. A sand colored Gem was in it. "Alright StormStrum, its time to fight!" A slowbro began to appear beside her, transparent like: her BEAST. "And Water Pulse!" She waved the staff and sent out an attack. DARK ursaring stood strong. "My best one didn't even phase it!" She sweated. "Blizzard!" A second DARK ursaring roared up. Then a third. "Goldy locks and the three bears? Sorry. You guys got the wrong character. Three trees down and turn left," She cracked a joke. The ursaring continued to growl. "Nope? Well, worth a try."

A heavy spike ball crashed into one of the ursaring, being reeled back by its wielder: Lel! "Need help?"

"Oh, not really." As if on cue, one of the Haruno girls appeared with her broad ax. "Tall scary dude it is!" She called her partner choice.

"Tera! Teraaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" Vern continued to call.

"Hey! Wait up! We're supposed to be partners!" Lydia struggled to keep up.

Vern stopped, giving an apologetic expression, "No offense, but... I'd rather work along side someone I'm familiar with. And, just by the way you look..." He looked over her lolita wears, "You're not exactly filling me with hope..."

"Hey! If I knew i was gonna get dropped out in the middle of no where to fight of DARK monsters, I would have geared up first!" Lydia stomped. Like before, the boy just walked away. "Hey! Come back!" She called. Though, it didn't seem to slow him any, and she muttered off to herself as she followed, "You don't even know what I can do..."

"So..." Tera tried to make some small talk with Lel. "I like your mace-thingy."

"My BoneRush? It's a morning star actually..."

"Well, whatever it is: it's really cool!" She skipped. "So how do you make it do that think where the chain gets all long and you can swing it around?"

Lel kept his weapon out of the girl's reach. "I just twist it... it takes practice."

"That's cool. My DreamEater is still better though," She whirled around her staff. "Oh! I know! I know! What's your BEAST? Mine's a slowbro. Pretty cool huh?"

Lel rolled his eyes, a little uncomfortable with all the chatter. "Lucario..."

"No way! That means we're both dual types! Pretty good since there's not really that many of us," She smacked his back, getting more and more chummy at a faster and faster rate. "You see, my friend Vern is a Lopunny--which you think would make him more of a fighting type because of the punches and kicks and agility, but it's really just a normal type. I mean, there's nothing wrong with normal types. It's just that most Tamers aren't normal types. So, in a way, I guess that makes him kinda special too. But I mean, that's to be expected when a BEAST fully developes and all. It's how we can transfer energy into our weapons, and even ourselves if we can manage it."

"You know... you talk a lot," Lel pointed out, trying to drop a hint.

"Oh, well, ya. It happens," Tera clearly didn't get it. "But you know what they say: say what you need to say; better to say too much than nothing at all," she laughed. She skipped along, kicking up the skirt of her dress. It really was an odd pairing: a mage and an armored berserker. But they teamed. "So, do you wear your armor like all the time? I mean, Vern wears his a lot but he's a normal type..." The conversation would be a while...

"I'm just saying: if you would just partner with me and listened when I said I knew which way Adell was, then we wouldn't be surrounded by DARK arcanine right now!" Lydia growled almost as loudly as the DARK.

"Ya. I'll work on that. But right now, we have to fight our way through," Vern snarked calmly. He raised up his bow, taking in aim and concentrating to summon up his BEAST element. "It's DARK fire, so let's give ice a try!" The arrow took on a blue hue and shot a cold point into one of the DARK monsters.

"FlashFire and I have got this with water" Lydia whipped around her chain, taking a veil of water around it. It held fast to wrap around one of the DARK and Lydia mustered all her strength to pull it down.

Tables had turned: instead of walking Ahead, Vern stayed side by side with Lydia. "Hey, about what I said earlier..." He finally coughed out. "I guess... Maybe it wouldn't be so bad being your partner..."

Lydia smiled. "Thanks!"

"If you don't mind me asking... What is you're BEAST?" He pointed down at her chain whip. "You used a variety of elements with that thing. I'm just curious what type it is."

"Oh, um... well..." Lydia looked down.

"Ya?"

"I don't know yet."

"Wait. What do you mean you don't know yet?" They came to a stop.

"It hasn't fully developed. Sometimes it favors water, and sometimes it favors thunder, or ice, or grass or fire..." Her head dropped with a groan. "It's an eevee..."

"Wait wait wait. Back up. So you're saying that your BEAST is still at its first stage?"

"Well, ya."

"How'd you manage to get this far with an under-developed BEAST?" Vern stood jaw-dropped. "A normal, first stage BEAST or single staged BEAST usually doesn't cut it for fighting. Especially if it's a normal type like yours! Energy can't be summoned from a weaker soul like that, which is why people with a one stage BEAST don't typically have an interest in becoming a Tamer."

"I know all that! I just...! Oh, I don't know... It just never grew all the way."

There was a moment of silence between them. "Come on. Let's get back to Adell before night." He stretched out a hand for her. "It's not too far away now."

"Lacus White, Himeko Takanawi, Mark Antony, and Stephen Silvio. From hence forth, you shall be team LTAS[lotus], lead by Lacus White." The audience cheered as professor Lyon announced their team name.

"Jason McBeth, Devin McBeth, Anita Jones, and Riky Emmers. From hence forth, you shall be team JADE, lead by Devin McBeth." Professor Reyes announced another team as the audience cheered.

Anastasia stepped up next to announce the following team. "Lydia Cross, Lel Odon, Tera Hatano, and Vern Kiliikoa. From this day on, you are Team LOHV[love], lead by Lydia Cross."

Applause started, but Lydia just stood frozen. She was the leader? HER!?

"Round one between Lel Odon from team LOHV, and Marco Milagros from team MTAN[mountain]," Lillith said, overseeing the match. "Begin when ready."

"Marco! Do your best!" Niara called out to her teammate.
"He'll be fine Niara," Maria assured her.
"You girls just leave it to us to kick some a**," Archer mused.

"Come on Lel!" Lydia cheered.

"You can do it! Represent team LOHV!" Tera practically bounced out of her seat.

Marco smirked. The boys were almost equal in height and mass, but he was clearly confident about the match up. "Let's just get this over with." He swung around his two sided lance, letting one end fall with a loud and harsh sound as it broke ground. "Glalie!" He summoned his BEAST, taking the liberty of making the first move. "Give SheerCold your power!" The lance glowed into a chilling-ice-blue, and with great speed he charged in.

Lel held onto Mercer like a vicegrip, lowering his stance and bracing himself. "Lucario!" His own BEAST manifested. SheerCold was thrust down, hitting the head of the morning star and trying to break through. It was a stalemate in terms of strength. Then Lel's weapon glowed like a force palm, and pushed Marco back enough for him to charge.

"Come on! I haven't got all day!" Marco mocked. But he didn't take into account Lel's speed his BEAST gave to him. The dark boy seemed to disappear in front of him! "What the--!?" He looked around, and wouldn't have spotted him if not for Lel's shadow from above.

Lel Swung around the chain of his morning star, hurling it towards Marco. Marco had barely managed a dodge, and continued it as Lel relentlessly swung around the heavy ball of his weapon. "Dragon pulse!" His morning star took on a dragon's aura. that could only mean... his BEAST was at a really high level!

"Protect!" Marco shielded himself with his BEAST's energy. "Double team." Now able to turn the tables, he lunged from behind, trying to corner Lel with a series of close range attacks. But... he still wasn't getting through...

Close combat was a move that was natural to Lel's BEAST! His morning star retracted into a mace, and the two were squared off with each blow sent and blocked. "Extreme Speed!" Lel finally broke away. Both boys' BEAST energy was running low. The next hit would be it. "Aura sphere." Lel sent out the head of his morning star, directly at Marco.

"Fine!" He changed grip on his lance. "Ice beam." He threw it out at his opponent. The weapons scaved across eachother, equal in power! And both landed their mark. The boys went flying back.

Marco laid still, Lel on his knee. For a moment, it looked like Marco would be the winner if he could stand, but lost all his energy. All eyes went to team LOHV's representative... It was quiet. Then the sound of Ice cracking away echoed the room. SheerCold fell as he rose up, his armor coated in thin ice. "The winner is Lel from Team LOHV." Lillith announced. "For this session, we'll go over where each side went wrong, then have one more match up before I dismiss you for the day. Any takers?"

"Next round is between Iris Piper of team IGNT[ignite] and Archer McQueen of team MTAN. Begin when ready." Lillith stepped out of the way.

"You gotta be kidding me? They put me against a little girl? With my IronFists?" He activated his metal gauntlets. "Doesn't seem exactly fair to 'er." He laughed.

Iris stepped shyly into the ring, not used to having so many people. "I-it's... it's okay..." Even her posture was terrible and shy!

"Poor girl..." Holly looked on beside Lydia.

"Hey, wait a second," Lydia realized. "Isn't she the girl with the hammer?"

"Hammer?" Holly, Tera and Vern looked over at her.

"Tell ya what? I'll make this quick for your sake." Archer continued his cockiness.

"I... I don't think--" Iris was caught off guard as Archer's Bullet Punch came right for her, knocking her down into a tumble back.

"No. I'm sure of it! That's the girl who's BEAST changed completely!" Her teammates (and holly) looked at her like she'd gone mad. "For a long time, everyone thought she had a mawhile because of its shadow. But it was really..." She watched as Iris picked herself back up.

As if a complete turn around happened, little Iris activated a cylander from her belt, transforming it into a large metal hammer. It was bigger than her!! She jumped onto one part of it, "MachPunch!" She called. The hammer head fired off, sending her with the speed she needed to counter, and knocked Archer off the ground.

Archer groaned as he had to pick himself up. "Guess I don't have to take it easy on you anymore..." He growled out. "Hitmonchan!" he called his BEAST. "Agility!" His speed was boosted. Poor Iris was sent into confusion, clinging to her MachPunch. Before she knew it Archer was right in front of her! "Try this on!" He let out a fury of punches from his guantlet: Ice, Fire, Thunder, Steel, and a mega hit.

Iris rolled back, needing to catch her breath.

"What the matter? Too tough for ya? Should have thought about that before you decided to whack me!" Archer laughed.

She could hear him running up again, and needed a plan! "Mind reader..." She muttered, gaining in energy to sense his movements. "Counter!" She swung around her hammer, giving a hard slug to Archer's whole body and sending him flying again. Like before, she jumped onto her hammer's back end, but tilted the face downward. "MachPunch!" The hammer fired off and sent her flying after Archer. "Sky uppercut!" She cried out, giving a fury of hits in mid air before hammering him down to the ground.

"What the hell...?" Archer barely managed to start picking himself up. But looking up, Iris was screaming with her hammer ready to swing. "Wide guard!" He brought up a shield to try and fend off Iris's crushing blow.

"Dynamic..." Archer's eyes grew wide. "Punch!" She broke through the guard and landed her blow.

"What... what kind of BEAST could..." Archer looked up and vaguely saw it: A Breloom. "A... Dual type...?"

"It was really a developing breloom..." Lydia finished her tale.

"A breloom?" Tera repeated.

"But those haven't been seem in fifty years! At least!"

"Well... There's one now..." Holly concluded.

"Today is all about close range. Any questions can wait until after the exercise. Is that clear?" The room stayed silent. "Good. Team LOHV leader Lydia Cross and team HEAT leader Iris Haruno are up."

Iris snickered with her twin, walking out with her claw gauntlets already drawn.

"Go Lydia! You can beat her!" Tera howled out.

Tojuro grunted with a smug smirk. "Sorry. But you don't seem to know the Haruno girls well enough. Your friend's gonna get shredded."

"You take that back!"

"That Haruno girl has a tyranitar BEAST. A dual type, but a dark type. That's what makes her more dangerous."

"Okay Lydia... You got this. For team LOHV!" Lydia gave herself a pep-talk. She stood ready, waiting for the okay. But when the word go was given...

"Fire fang and Thunder fang!" Iris ran in like a wild linoone! Claws drawn and everything! She sent Lydia into a spin, and kept up a ruthless series of hits. "So much for team LOHV!"

Lydia finally gripped FlashFire. "Thunder!" The chain took an electric energy, wrapping around Iris to give a good shock. Both girls hit the ground panting, but Iris was the faster to recover.

"That's a good little trick. Let's see how it fairs with this! Stone Edge!" Stones were summonede around her and thrown wildly at Lydia.

"Fire!" her whip took on a flame essence as she hit away each rock. It became a dance of body movement, whip movement, dodges, and destruction. Now free of attacks, she sent FlashFire to strike at Iris. "Flare Blitz!" The chain was shot out like a flareon from a cannon.

Iris grinned, tucking in, "Sandstorm!" She spun, creating a twister of sand. No matter how much Lydia whipped away, there was no breaking through, and she began to tire. Sensing it, Iris stopped her storm, "Time for a good thrashing!" She went in like a gyarados! Lydia didn't stand a chance with the thrash.

In the thrash, FlashFire was separated from her, and she was tossed aside. She lay still for a long time. The round was about to be called when she finally started to pick herself back up. "Not yet..." She panted.

Iris sighed, getting bored. "Have it your way." Each claw lit up in Ice and fire, and she charged in again.

There wasn't anything Lydia could really do! No attacks! But she reached out in a defensive posture. Barrier was summoned. "Huh...?" She looked up at it.

"What the..." Iris gave an irritated look.

"Hey, but I thought eevee didn't know barrier?" Tera peered closer.

"No, they can't," Vern said, looking at his friend. "But a glaceon can."

"You mean... it's trying to devolope!? Right now!?"

"Who knows. There's something strange about that girl."

"It doesn't matter!" Iris roared out. "I'll chip away at it all day if I have to!" Her claws went into a furry. But they were sent back with a mirror coat!

"It does matter!" Lydia stood. "It matters because I'm not as weak as you thought." She gave a serious look. 'Even without FlashFire... I have to try!' She began to glow with Synthesis.

"That's leafeon!" Tera gawked.

"Go!" A pink wave was sent out to knock Iris away even further.

"And espeon..." Tera grew more intense.

Lydia breathed in deep, letting her body glow before releasing pockets of energy. "Hidden Power!" She let out a bright and powerful attack.

"Hidden... Power...?" Lel finally chimed up.

"But there aren't any eevee forms that know that move!" Tera cried out.

"Vern..." Holly looked over. "What is that girl...?" The dust cleared, and Lydia stood victorious.

"What else?" Vern said. Lydia turned back to look at the screaming and cheering crowd. "That's the leader of team LOHV."

"Wild leeks!" Lydia cheered out, pulling them out to collect. "This ought to make Maria happy!" She began to hum a happy tune. She smiled at her petty collection: Mushrooms, nuts, leeks... There wasn't much, but maybe it'd be enough to make a nice stew (for a change) rather than scraps. "Uncle Azrael doesn't like leeks. But I think he'll welcome it since that pig got stolen." She looked at her hands, dry and covered in dirt, and cleaned them off on her dirty apron before looking down at her brown and tattered dress hem. It used to be a cream color.

The sound of heavy hooves made the ground tremble, and grew as it closed in. Rapidash came in a group with armored riders. "You there!" A tall, dark haired man at the front of the lines called. "I am lord Reyes." Lydia froze, tumbling before she remembered to bow properly. "Do you know the way to the paramount where the dragons lay?"

"D-dragons?"

"Are you hard of hearing?"

"N-no, sir." She said quick and stiff, pointing him back onto the overgrown road. "It's just that... No one comes through. Especially not for dragons," She defended.

Reyes grunted, kicking his horse and leading his men onward to leave Lydia behind. Though, somewhere in the mix, one of them deliberately dropped six gold coins for her. As soon as they went around the bend, Lydia scrambled to collect the drop, smiling and giggling--certain the her uncle would be pleased.

"Uncle Azrael! Uncle Azrael!"

"There you are," Azrael said, hands worked and face worn. "Where've you been?"

"What does it matter? Look!" She proudly presented the coins.

Azrael looked down, peering in her basket. After some consideration, he asked the first obvious question: "You didn't steal that did you?"

"No! I was looking for nuts and berries when this lord and his soldiers rode up," Azrael's face changed to fear. "One of the soldiers reached into his purse and dropped them. I saw him do it!"

"They were... just given to you?" He watched her smile grow. "This is wonderful news!" He laughed. "Now take your sister and head for town. Six coins might get you a lamb and small calf. When they grow, we can get wool and milk. I think I might have a few copper coins saved up to send you with. And you'll take ponyta."

"But why do I have to go uncle?" Lydia's smile quickly erased itself. "Maria is more than capable of going on her own. Or aunt--"

"You're aunt Mia is sick." Azrael cut off her words. "And I won't send you girls alone. Now get your sister!" He urged.

Lydia huffed, rolling her eyes but ultimately setting aside her basket and running out to find Maria. It wasn't long before she found her sister, playing with a branch like a sword. "Maria! Uncle wants us at the house!" She called, watching Maria drop the branch and hurry back through pockets of mud. The two ran together, staying silent until they reached the worn little hut. "Uncle!" She called.

Azrael whispered to Mia, bedridden by the fire pit, and looked back to the girls. "Good," He said, getting up stiffly and bringing a tiny coin purse. "There's eleven coppers in there. And the six gold coins. That's all we have! So make sure to use them wisely in town."

"A lamb and a calf." Lydia repeated his earlier instructions.

"Good girl." He patted her head.

The town was an uproar of trades and merchants, and the townspeople making their way around the hustle and bustle. "Maria! The houses here are so big! Just look at them!" Lydia awed.

Maria smiled, rolling her eyes at her sister. "Not really. It looks like it's a few families splitting the top and bottom to live in."

"I'd love to live in town. In a big house. I bet ekans never find their way in any of these homes!" Lydia was oblivious to her sister, and the troubles of town, only awed by the sheer vastness of everything. But there was still a job to do. A lamb and a calf were needed. "Huh? Look over there sister," She pointed.

A miltank pen and mareep pen were in a small corner, each looking miserable. "Pokemon?" Without a word, her sister wondred off with the ponyta in toe to get a better look.

"Looks like the wee one caught yer eye?" A weathered woman said, carrying her baby girl in her arm. "These are Lyon miltank and mareep. Down the way I've got a tauros and buff--"

"I'm sorry, but," Lydia cut off before the woman could say more, "I don't have money to buy pokemon. My uncle sent me and my sister to fetch young lambs and calves. I don't know if we could even afford both of those..." Maria came up, feeling the need to protect her more naive sister.

"I got a few babies at home!" The woman called, grabbing for either girl. "It's not far from town. And I'll give ya a fair price. They'll grow to be better than a fat cow and old goat, live longer too."

"But we don't need--"

"Pink ones 'll give milk every day, and the fluffy ones is good for wool. It's what you girls need right? But they're also good for defending! Never get stolen! I can promise you that!"

"Then why sell them?" Maria was quick.

The woman bit her lip, hanging onto her child. "My husband's been called to war. I can't make enough on milk and wool alone by myself..." The girls remained silent, clearly trying to measure out if what she said was true. "Look. If you go through the west gate, follow the dirt path down to my farm and you'll see. Houndoom won't let you near, but if you wait for me then I'll show you. Give you a good dinner too!"

Maria pulled her sister in close to speak with. "I don't know about all this. How do we know this isn't a trick?"

"Well... if anything happens... we can always make a get away on ponyta. We've got more to gain if we go." Lydia whispered back thoughtfully.

"Ya, but I think we should still look around for what we came here for. Just in case."

It was agreed, and after loitering the market with shopping for some hours, the sisters made their way outside the walls that protected the town. If they had known that Queen Mab was lurking the the dark, they might have run. Instead they walked along leisurely, away from town and down the dirt road like they were told. The Market only had old animals, being sold for slaughter and bad meat. When Mab appeared atop the walls, she looked with disgust for whatever reason she had, and leered into the sky to call on the dragon. "The new religion will be the end of us all. The people must come back to the old ways--and to me--if we are to survive." in a wisp of cloud, she left--seeming to disappear on the spot. The next was the stillness of the air, dry and hot before a roar swept through; and on its echo came the dragon Salamence to burn down the world of men.

"What was that sound?" Maria looked back. It didn't sound like any bear or beast she'd known in the woods. It sounded bigger.

"Do you smell that?" Lydia sniffed the sudden hot air.

"Yes... I smell it." Maria kept a watch. When the dragon showed and its firey breath coming near, she jumped! "Run!" she called. "Dragon!" Salamence was no picky about where to put its fire. When it saw the people run like a swarm of ants outside of the walls, it laid waste to the outside. "Lydia run!" Maria took hold of ponyta, taking off its bridal and drawing her dull little sword. "Run sister!"

Without a weapon of her own, or any skill, Lydia obeyed and fled into the cover of the woods. Further and further in, until it was quiet. But her sister was still out there. Against the dragon! "I can't lose my sister! I have to find something to help!" She looked through the thick trunks of the trees; branches were little use against a dragon's thick hide. She ran through, looking for anything. And that's when she found it: Moss covered and almost rusted, there stood a sword embedded in stone. With only the thoughts of her sister, Lydia ran to claim it and pulled on its moss covered hilt. It resisted at first, and quickly gave way. "Perfect!" She took off again, unaware that she had woken a woman, watching with weary eyes over the sword.

Back on the field, Lydia looked desperately for her sister. "Maria! Mariiiiaaaa!" She cried out. A sudden burst of wind and the shake of the ground pushed her over. Turning back around, she saw the head of the dragon and its large eyes staring down at her. Its fangs were shown, and fire licked at its lips.

"Little man-ling. Steel barer. Murderer. Child of the new religion! I will devour you whole, and keep you in my belly to watch your world burn away" It growled. Then it struck, hitting ground as Lydia rolled out of the away. She began to run, clinging to the sword. Salamence fissured the earth with each massive step of its run towards her, roaring out and throwing fire in a fit of rage.

"No!" Lydia plead, turning and holding up the sword. The fire... disappeared? She opened her eyes from her flinching, and saw the flame become swalloed up by the steel--beautiful and clean, new! And she could hear its song: I am Excalibur! I am the sword of the king! I am justice and right! And it was beautiful.

"Little man-ling! What trickery is this!?" Salamence roared out a dragon's flame.

She could hear the sword sing as the flames hit on it. Deep in her gut, something made her cry out, "This is Exaclibur! And by right, you are banished!" She swung it, slashing its cheek. It cried out in pain, flying off in haste. And all was silent for a while.

"It is her! She hold Excalibur! The sword of the kings!" Called a man's voice. A crowd began to gather, bickering about the idea of a small girl ever being able to draw out the sword. "The Wizard will know! Merlin!" The people began to call out, some with rage, others with confusion.

"There isn't a need to shout, my lords," Annie walked from the wood, holding her wooden staff. "I am here."

"Merlin! Is this true? A little girl pulled out the sword in the stone? Excalibur?"

"So it appears."

"Well what does that mean?" Another man said, dissatisfied.

"It means exactly as it sounds," Annie said, leaning on her staff. "The sword is no longer stick in the stone, and this is the sword that could not be melted by dragon's fire, the sword that slashed through dragon skin, and it is held by this girl. What part of that lost you?"

It went quiet. Then in the distance a voice called: "Hail to the king! Long live the king!" And eagerly, more of the crowd joined in the chant: "Long live the king!"

In the palace of Camelot, hundreds paid homage to the new "king". Lydia sat on the throne, adorned in a jeweled and gold colored gown and fitted with a heavy crown to which her head was barely big enough to fit. She sat there stiffly, looking to Merlin for answers of her own. Only a month ago, she was a girl without anything special about her, and it was her sister who had a fighting heart. Now, she was ruling a country, and her sister was her sword at her side to protect her (like she always had). "Merlin," She asked hushed while more people paid their respects at the foot of the throne. "What if I'm not supposed to be king or queen or whatever this is? I'm not who these people think--I'm... I don't know what I am. I'm just... me."

Annie looked over, in a lightly decorated gown. "You will rule, because you were born to rule. The sword does not lie. It can't--it's only a sword!" She laughed. "The people need a ruler. Someone to unite them and bring peace. Mab believes that this 'peace' will mean the end of the old religion, and thus the end of her power. But... I do not think it will be something terrible."

"Mab? Who's that?"

"Her true name is : Lillith. Queen of Magic."

"But aren't you a part of magic?"

"Mab and I have our... disagreements. As does her sister: the Lady of the Lake. Formally or informally known as Holly of--"

"My king," A man interrupted, dressed richly as a lord. "I am Lord Vern Cornwall." Lydia smiled, acknowledging him with a nod like she was told. "And May I present my wife: The Lady Igrain. Come Himeko," He presented a beautiful woman proudly. "And, our daughter: Morgana Iris, the Fair." A small girl, just younger than Lydia stepped forward.

"I thought kings were supposed to be men," Iris inquired.

"Morgana!" Her father scolded in a hushed tone.

"It's... alright," Lydia felt even more strange, but pardoned the whole thing.

"Sire," A deep voice came up next. A bulky and dark haired man knelled. "I am Gawain, Lord of Orkney. Lel, to my friends. And this is my eldest son: Devin." Again, lydia smiled and nodded. "Forgive me majesty. I had hoped to unite our peoples, but... I am afraid I may have planned too much of it."

"No, sir knight," Lydia chimed happily. "I would love for our people to unite. And put an end to further fighting."

"Of-of course, sire!" Lel stumbled in a bit of surprise at how quickly Lydia took to the idea. "I had hoped that a marriage might... but I am certain that may not be quite so... well..." He gave up on trying to put the idea delicately.

Lydia looked Devin over. He was handsome. Strong looking. And from what she understood: a marriage ensured peace. "I'm sure we can manage something..." She said, trying to give hope. But all she got in return were confused looks. Even Annie sighed and gave a weary look.

Lydia blinked in confusion. Eight months had passed since her coronation, and three more were in the wait until the day of her wedding. For the first time, she was seeing the person she was actually going to be married to: "My daughter," Lel presented. "Anita of Guinevere."

"A... girl..." Lydia kept a hideous expression.

"Yes, sire, a woman." Annie said in an obvious tone. "The king accepted a marriage, and so the king will marry the Lady of Guinevere. As promised." As it turned out, Devin was already married to another, and the other sons were but boys.

"I see." Lydia replied before a discrete thrust of Annie's elbow plunged into her side. "I, I welcome you! Lady Anita! To Camelot! I hope you will be happy here."

"Of course sire," Anita said, having had to rehearse various lines and stay in good graces. "It is my honor to be the one uniting our two kingdoms. My father and brother speak of nothing else but the king's great deeds."

"Erm--thank you... I hope you find your chambers comfortable. I will see you at the feast," Lydia did well to escape and finally let out a harsh breath.

The feast was full of happy faces. But among them, Lydia felt more alone than ever; an outcast of her own making. Then something had caught her attention. "Maria," She leaned to her sister. "Who is the man with red hair?" She motioned over.

"That is Jason of Lancelot. He's requested a spot at the round table," Maria answered quietly. "And with him is his son," She pointed her chin at a small silver haired boy. "Tojuro of Gallahan."

"Lancelot..."

Once at her dorm, Lydia felt odd with a boy next to her. More so because of how some of the girls stopped to look over before whispering as they passed by. Opening the door, she peered in, "Maria? Mariaaaa!" She called. No reply. "Iris! Is anyone here?" She stepped in. No replies. Looking back, she wasn't really sure how to go about this whole thing with Lel at the doorway. "Uh... You can come in for a while," She said awkwardly. "There's um... stuff in the fridge I think. I'm just gonna clean up and change quickly so I'm not covered in mud," She laughed even more awkwardly. Granted that she'd be closed off from Lel in her bathroom, it didn't change how strange it'd be just thinking that she'd be undressed with a boy in her dorm!

She left the option in the air, grabbing a change of cloths--just fresh jeans and t-shirt while she turned on the heater to start warming the place up a little. The radio echoed softly through the place from her bedroom: O-K Girlz and their cover of Listen to Your Heart The host announced as the music faded in. It wasn't a long wash or anything like that. But while she cleaned up, Lydia planned n what to do. 'If he's there... I'm gonna do it! I'm gonna just tell him that I like him, and... Kiss him...' She couldn't even think about saying it without shying down and blushing a deep red. No amount of pep talking would change that. She could walk right up to him, mouth open, and still chicken out. She knew that...

Lél

Lél felt strange walking through the halls. No more so than when he came to visit Holly, sick as a dog. It smelled... girly. Perfumes, candles, other smelly stuff... It made him uncomfortable to be there. He could have probably let Lydia be once they were back on campus. But what was he going to do with the free time to spare? His pokemon were tired, so training was out. Lydia had volunteered on the first day of school to tutor him with all the book work. Then again, so had Vern and Iris; but he had no idea where they were. Speaking of Iris... These two lived together? He vaguely remembered one night that she stayed over with Marco... They were a little loud.

"Uh... you can come in for a while." Lél accepted the invitation in, hanging up his coat and taking a glance around. The radio had been left on and despite the offer to free load the kitchenette, he picked a spot in the tiny living room to sit at and wait. Ironically, he wasn't at all nervous about some girl taking a shower while he was there. There were reasons for that. Not like Jason's plausible reasons. When a sudden blizzard comes in and there's only a small safe house (basically a shack) to take shelter under, it wasn't uncommon to share shelter with several people and wait it out. And yes... sometimes it got grossly indecent--everyone else usually ignored it for the most part.

When Lydia finally came back, he resisted the best he could to not take out any of his cigarettes and light one. A slight anxiety relief. He looked at her, not really thinking anything of it, "Vith breeding klass, Vhat he vant?" He started the conversation and study. Lydia did look a little scattered. Maybe the rain? Either way, he made himself a little more comfortable: taking off his coat and tie, loosening his sleeves, and unbuttoning the first few from the top of his shirt. Again, he didn't think anything of it except to get comfortable.

Lydia's cheeks quickly turned pink when Lel started "getting comfy". It was probably stupid, getting all flustered over a couple of buttons, but she was fifteen! She had never really been in love, and there was a good looking guy in her room--there might have been a problem if she wasn't blushing uncomfortably! It was probably a good thing Lel had a level head on, going right to the task. "R-right! Um... Well, I had picked up this book the other day about grooming, and Maria said she'll help me with that. But last year, Mister Jones wanted us to look closer at the growth and developement--nearer to the end of the year actually. So we'll probably be going over egg groups and breeding moves. Moves that get passed down from parent to child with pokemon," She dug out her old notes, tattered and incomplete. It was a mess, and had pages missing (with several about to go missing themselves).

'This is... okay! Ya. We're just two people who happen to be in the same class, and he just happens to need some help with studying. Mia pounded in all that textbook information into my head, so I'm kinda good at it. And that's all!' She smiled as she explained more to him. She stopped a few times, making sure he could keep up and understand her. But those thoughts kept returning. Thoughts about telling him how she felt about him, or just getting closer. But every time she almost bumped her face into him, or looked right at his eyes, she chickened out and went right back to just studying. "He probably won't ask about all the egg moves. But if you really want to, the library has a few copies of this book you can look at and reference." She smiled rather awkwardly.
