 Ten years? Favorite cousin? Just what the hell was he talking about. He didn't remember any of that. Why was this man being so familiar with him? Yet when he offered to tag along with him, he snapped. "Tag along? Tag along? Absolutely not!" Ellery refused, storming past Matt. "Piss off and go bother someone else." In his anger, he inadvertently started heading back towards the temple, instead of away from it like he originally was. At this point, he didn't even notice the warped magic, but it was still there. Most definitely there. When Ellery was angry, though, he tended to block out most anything else, including pain. He was indeed in pain, he just didn't know it yet.

 He was surprised. He definitely couldn't remember why he was his favorite cousin. Maybe it was because it was his only cousin...no he had others. Not many, but he did. It took a moment for Matt to notice that Ellery was heading in one direction, but now heading back towards the temple. Ignoring what he'd said, he followed after he'd gotten a certain distance. Matt wasn't the most magically attuned person, but could feel something wasn't right in the air. Could it be from the temple?

Ellery reached the heart of the ruined temple before he realized Matt was following him. Growling slightly, he snapped, "I thought I told you to piss off!" It was around now that he realized the pain he was in, causing his knees to buckle. Ellery found himself on the ground, practically face to face with an odd looking... something. Damnit, this was all Matt's fault! If he hadn't been so familiar with him, he wouldn't have gotten so turned around. He wouldn't have gone straight into this goddamned warped magic. Frustrated, Ellery picked up the odd looking thing and threw it at Matt, despite the pain. "Just leave me alone!" ((The odd looking thing would be the artifact warping the magic and the like.))

A strange object got tossed at Matt while Ellery was writhing in pain. Reflexes kicked in, catching the object and examining it. It wasn't made of metal, but it seemed like it was made of some kind of strange stone. It had a foreboding aura about it, and seemed to be the source of the energies emanating around the area. "So the rumors were true. This must be what the temple was protecting before it got demolished." He already knew how the object felt, trying to find a place to hide, but everything being destroyed by senseless fighting. It began to gleam somewhat, Matt covering his eyes with his arm some. "Something's...happening...!" It seemed the artifact was unhappy about being tossed, a few pulses of energy shooting outward, the sky beginning to become cloudy, then the artifact stopped glowing altogether, appearing to be just another piece of stone. Looking up, the clouds seemed an ill omen. "Oh great, this day just keeps getting better and better..."

After he threw the odd looking thing, Ellery felt his pain diminish. Relieved, he sat up and straightened his cap. If he was thinking straight, he'd figure out it was the thing he'd threw at Matt that caused his pain. If he was thinking straight, he'd figure out the thing was causing all the warped magic. Yet all he could do was watch as that same object shot a burst of magic towards the sky. s**t. This was going to be his fault, wasn't it? ....Like hell it was! Ellery stood, pointing at Matt. "This is all your fault!"

And now he was being shouted at. Joy. "I'm not taking blame for something I didn't do. I tried reaching out! You're the forgetful one that can't even figure out how I know you. You're the one tossing magical artifacts like they're candy! But you know what, it was the soldiers' fighting that destroyed the temple and released this thing in the first place. If you're gonna point fingers, point at them!" He put his helmet back on and placed the artifact in his bag, turning to begin walking away. But something began shifting in the area. Not magically, but physically. "Ah, hell..."

"So I can't remember my childhood! The only thing I remember is being alone! Why the hell does it even matter?!" Ellery shouted at Matt, still as angry and frustrated as ever. "Of course it's the soldiers' fault! It's their damned fault for scaring away all the game with their ******** fighting. I wouldn't even be heading to town right now!" He didn't notice Matt pocket the artifact, but he did notice that the land beneath him seemed to be moving, yet didn't think much of it besides it messing up his footing. "********!" Ellery quickly moved from his spot, heading back in the direction of the nearest town. And unfortunately it seemed Matt was heading in that same direction. Great. "Just because you know my name, it doesn't mean anything. So don't think you can be all buddy-buddy. I just need to get to town."

"Fine then." The ground cracked open behind them, one claw rising up out of it, and another shortly after. "The hell?" He drew his blade, preparing for the worst as the shadowy creature began to pull itself up out of the ground. Matthew stopped worrying about their fight, focusing his gaze on the new one. "Can you at least fight?"

Ellery stopped in his tracks when he saw movement from the corner of his eye. As he saw Matt draw his sword, Ellery took a few steps back. Fight? Why fight? Ellery looked at Matt and followed his gaze, finally setting his eyes on the problem. What the hell was that? "Yeah, I can fight," Ellery replied, albeit a bit late. He was grinning a bit. A fight was always interesting. "Just don't get in my way." Ellery decided to take the initiative, raising a hand. Said hand began to glow a light blue as he used an outstretched finger to trace out a rune in the air. As soon as the rune completed, fire lept out seemingly from nowhere, and towards the shadowed creature.

Matt saw shining light in his peripheral vision after getting his response, feeling heat and seeing the flames. Ok, he CAN fight, and with magic. And also without fear. That's it...! He was never afraid of anything, that's why he was always his favorite. "Well I just remembered why you were my favorite cousin, one mystery down." The flames impacted the shadow creature with great force. The light it gave off seemed to weaken it. It yelped in pain, but it wasn't going to go down that quickly. "I have a plan, prepare another, but aim for my blade." He jumped in front of him, holding his blade out, charging it with electrical energy. The creature was angry now, and was now rushing it to attack, using its sinister claws for traction.

 "Enchant your sword, huh? Got it!" Ellery replied, quickly drawing out another rune in midair, yet it was different and seemingly more complicated than the first. As the rune finished, fire yet again appeared out of nowhere, leaping straight for Matt's sword. The fire wrapped around the blade, spiraling up and down it. Ellery seemed rather proud of himself for being able to pull this off. "The spell is only temporary, so finish it off quickly."

"All I need is one hit." The flames mixed with the electrical energies imbued within the blade, charging forward as the creature charged. The bright light seemed to weaken its vision as he rushed it, causing it to look down a bit. He leaped into the air, holding it high up. When it looked up, he was already close to it, slashing downward. The magical energies faded, the creature falling to its side and breaking apart as small shadowy particles, blowing away and vanishing, the sky returning to normal. He sheathed his blade, and turned to Ellery. "Thanks for the assist."

 Ellery watched as Matt took care of the shadowed creature, becoming confused as it dissipated, as if it never existed in the first place. He heard Matt thank him, so he replied with a 'You're welcome', though sounded rather distracted. Ellery found himself drawing closer to where the creature once stood, yet stopped as he felt that warped magic once more. It seemed to be coming from Matt, or rather his bag. "Why did you keep that thing?" Ellery asked, backing away to a more comfortable distance. "More importantly, what the hell was that... shadow thing? You seem to know things, so start talking." Honestly, he should've just left it as it was and just leave, but curiosity was getting the better of him.

He was finally talking to him without yelling, it was a start. All it took was a shadow beast attack, but he'd take it. "I'm keeping it safe. If it's doing things like this, it needs a new place to hold its power. I didn't expect the legends to be true, but it seems they are. That thing is what's triggering the darkness, and who knows what else it's capable of. Fortunately, it seems that they hate light, so anything that produces it seems to weaken them." He looked up into the sky, seeing the sky once again. "This thing needs to be put away again, or more of those creatures might run loose, or worse." He shuddered to think of what else it could unleash, but for the first time in a long time, he felt confident this was something worth fighting for. "I think it's power subsides after a summon, at least for a while. I won't ask you for your help, but I won't turn it away. You know your way with magic, so you have a better feel for it than me."

Listening to Matt's explanation, Ellery found it hard to believe. Sure he could feel the warped aura the thing was eminating, but it actually summoned that shadowed creature? And it caused the earth to move? Even though he experienced both, Ellery was still skeptical. "What legends?" Ellery found himself asking. Sure he knew there were old wives' tales about the temple, but that's all they were, right? Though he suppose it'd help if he could remember what those tales were. Ellery took a glance at Matt's bag, still a bit wary. "I can feel it alright. It really hurts if I get too close," he told him. "You seriously can't feel that? Can't you just leave it alone? How do I know you won't misuse it?" He seemed to want to go on, but his stomach interrupted with a grumble. Ellery sighed a bit. "All this... excitement only made me hungrier. I need to get to town," he said, though it seemed more to himself than to Matt. Without even waiting for answers to his questions, Ellery hurriedly started off towards town once more. He really needed to quell his grumbling stomach.
