And then her eyes were wide, and she was also suddenly very worried at what was going on outside the window. Because she was kind of reluctant to go down that road. But Chao cut that off when she shot across the room and smashed the holoprojector plate.
And she was blinking again, this time confused. "C-Chao-aru?" Her voice was inquisitive, and she turned back to Pheidippides. "What were you going to say? There have been what-aru?"
She glanced back and forth between the two of them suddenly, trying to wrap her head around it. She understood that he was suggesting something that was an exchange of fluids, which she assumed was a kiss, and not a requirement for something more, given their age. But there were some weird rituals in magic, she figured.

Çħαø Ŀїηġšħεη "Ras teil mai magicscir magister!" The holographic avatar shrugged, not the least bit as bothered by this conversation as the two girls seemed to be. Of course, he was also a tiny bit of a troll, and thought it funny that Chao would probably wind up forming a pactio with her ancestor. "There have been records of contracts formed through sexual intercourse, but as a whole those have all been permanent contract events, on a higher level than the provisional contract being discussed here. As I understand the rules of the system, the two of you are too young to form a permanent contract in any event."

"Idon'tthink... Ican'tbelieve... I..." Her words were a tumbled rush, hands going to her face, clearing her throat, going into little incoherent sounds as she struggled to get herself back under control. She liked Chao, maybe even had some deeper feeling toward the girl she considered her best friend, but that?

Çħαø Ŀїηġšħεη "Ras teil mai magicscir magister!" Off on the other side of the room, Chao was now sitting on her bed, one hand pressed to her forehead in consternation as Pheidippides milked the contract conditions for all they were worth. It would have been a mostly simple thing to keep to the rules and conditions of a provisional contract, but he had to get smarmy and go on with unnecessary information about permanent contracts. What a nuisance.
Pheidippides kept his avatar facing the general direction of Ku Fei, as most humans became uneasy when an AI made use of its omnidirectional sensors to see what someone they supposedly weren't 'facing' was doing; he knew Chao wasn't concerned by such matters and so kept his 'face' toward the other Chinese girl. However, he was carefully observing them both.
"So, shall it be a provisional contract? Or would you prefer one of the other means of augmentation that Lady Lingshen has at her disposal?"

Slowly, after several deep breaths, Ku Fei had turned back to more fully face the A.I., looking past him, to Chao. Her closest friend. Her best friend. She knew Chao wouldn't do anything to intentionally hurt her. And more than that, she trusted that Chao would help her in whatever way she could.
"I'll form a provisional contract-yo."
Ku's voice was firm, and blue eyes remained fixed not on Pheidippides, but on Chao, as she spoke.
"Whatever it'll take to help you-aru."

Çħαø Ŀїηġšħεη "Ras teil mai magicscir magister!" The Grecian-avatar'd AI inclined his head. "Very well. I'll be just a moment while I tune the electromagnetic resonance in the room to create the contract circle."
With that, the holographic avatar disappeared, and the holoplate went dark. While Pheidippides wasn't a magical mascot creature and therefore just couldn't produce a stick of chalk out of thin air and draw up the magic circle, long periods of study and perusal of ancient--well, contemporary in this time period--texts had allowed Chao and the AI to come to the conclusion that the only thing the magic circle did was focus and resonate energy within the circle to allow the contract to be made. It was easily something an advanced smart AI could replicate with electrical currents from various devices throughout the room--devices in the form of the various futuristic-looking but otherwise-useless things that Chao had scattered all over the room, their positioning seeming completely random until now.
While he was focused on setting up the energy of the circle--not that he couldn't still monitor the room, of course--Chao finally looked up at Ku Fei again. She'd never particularly had trouble expressing herself, and indeed often found enjoyment in other people being put on the spot, but this had involved making a mockery of her as well, and that wasn't fun.
"Sorry for how troublesome he's being-ne. He likes to get a rise out of people. He has been in service for many years, so perhaps he's beginning to develop rampancy-yo..."
Shaking her head slowly, she sighed and then stood up, grabbing one of those random futuristic-looking trinkets and putting it down where she'd been sitting on the bed, where it began to glow faintly. In fact, several of them were starting to glow a faint blue.
"Well, beyond that, thank you for being willing to do things that might not be comfortable to help-yo."

Her expression had gone from serious, to once again tinged with a slight blush, and she went to studying what Phi was doing with great interest.
"It's alright-ne. I'm glad I can help you, Chao-aru."
She turned back to Chao, the embarrassment still apparent in her expression, but it seemed like she was looking at the girl through force of will. This was a serious moment, and she wasn't going to allow her feelings to override her good sense. "It isn't.. uncomfortable-yo," Ku ducked her head a moment, color filling her face as she stared pointedly then at the ground, unable, even through her willpower, to force herself to look at the girl across from her.
"It's.. alright-ne, because it's you. F-for you, I mean."
My, look at that carpet, was that a high thread count? And look at those patterns. Absolutely beautiful. Yep.

Çħαø Ŀїηġšħεη "Ras teil mai magicscir magister!" Pheidippides chose that moment to rematerialize on a holoprojector, but this one was near the door as the one on the table in the center of the room also placed it in the center of the magic circle, and his signals would interfere with the electromagnetic resonance.
"So, there's the magic circle, all well and done, so you just do what you need to do."
Sighing at the AI's exacerbation of the situation, Chao lowered her head and murmured what seemed to be an incantation of some type; in reality, she was unlocking her magic seals so that this thing could even work in the first place. At this stage in the game, she may as well leave the seals off; the oversaturation of magic energy from the World Tree made it more likely that her specific signature would be lost in the white noise.
"I think it might just be about time to replace you, Pheidippides," she sniped once she was done unsealing her magic. "You have been at my side for many years, after all."
"That threat is hardly effective when we both know that you require me to run the combat Cassiopeia, Lady Lingshen," the AI responded in complete seriousness. "You know as well as I do that I'm just having fun."
He let out a sigh, then turned his attention toward Ku Fei. "I apologize for my behavior to this point, Lady Fei. It was merely my attempt to entertain, not provoke emotional distress."

While her senses were more energy based, and not magical base, she had an idea of just exactly what her friend had been hiding - and she had kept it hidden all this time. It was amazing, wasn't it? The things you missed if you weren't really looking for them. Or the things that those you were close to, hid for the sake of something larger than either of you.
Her hand clenched down at her side briefly, and she lifted her palm then, staring down at it briefly. She nodded then, and stepped closer to Chao, into the circle proper. The blonde haired girl exhaled deeply, squaring her shoulders. She turned to give Pheidippides a brief glance, her head shaking with a strange sort of smile on her face.
"If I couldn't handle teasing-aru.." Her dialect slipped then, back into Chinese, her expression was far more direct than likely even Chao had seen it. This was dedication. Similar to what one lover might pledge to another. Or more fittingly, what a servant might pledge to a lord, or a soldier to a commander. One of unquestionable trust and faith.
"If I couldn't handle teasing, how could I expect to stand toe to toe with whoever stands up against Chao? Thank you, Pheidippides. For trying to make this easier for us by making us laugh, and forget about the seriousness." Her smile was brief then, there for only a moment before it faded, and she focused again on Chao.
"I'm ready."

Çħαø Ŀїηġšħεη "Ras teil mai magicscir magister!" Pheidippides, true to his word, turned his avatar off with a nod to the two ladies, ostensibly for the sake of privacy. He and Chao both knew that he was still completely monitoring the room in half a dozen different ways, but the point was the intent. Besides, Ku Fei may not have actually known just how much he could monitor.
With her magic circuits unlocked, Chao gave it a few moments for her dormant stores of magic to filter throughout her body, carefully regulating the release so that the Magic Thought Police wouldn't suddenly pick up on a massive outwelling of magic. She wasn't anywhere near the class of the most powerful mages in recorded history, but she was descended from the Thousand Master and his son, and so was blessed with a greater than normal pool of starting magic.
Within a few moments, she wiggled her fingers, watching as red motes of light blinked into existence and swirled around her hands. That was all she needed to know that her magic was back to capacity. She would, of course, 'stretch out' later in preparation for Operation: VALID, but that was neither here nor there.
Dispersing the magic energy, she stepped forward as well into the magic circle. She wasn't exactly sure what was making her as nervous about this as well. She knew going into it that Pheidippides was going to be a troll, and she wasn't as easy to emotionally manipulate, not anymore anyways. It wasn't that she was vastly altering the recorded history of events as she knew them; her plan was already going to do that anyway, succeed or fail. Maybe it was because Ku Fei was her ancestor as well, and it was the ingrained human revulsion to anything that could even remotely be categorized as incestual.
It got a little easier if she didn't think about it that way. She had a lot of practice distancing herself emotionally from a situation, having actively been doing so for two years now, distancing herself from the classmates whose descendants died to save her life. But to completely distance herself here would be a disservice, perhaps even cruel, to Ku Fei, who was willing to put herself out there just for the chance to be able to help her.
So she gave the other girl a nervous smile as she took another step, closing the distance, distracting from that by remarking, "So, let's see what kind of a mood the Random Number God is in today-ne?"
Of course, she actually had a fair idea of what artifact might come out of this, given that from her studies of this time period, they often seemed to reflect the ministra either culturally or in personality. In her history, Ku Fei hadn't had a pactio, but both of them being Chinese in ancestry with Ku Fei being very much a traditionalist strongly indicated it would be a legendary item from Chinese history.
That entire contemplation filled the space it took for her to close the distance completely, leaning in toward the (surprisingly) shorter girl and closing her eyes at the last second, just enough time to ensure she wasn't going to make a fool of herself and miss as she kissed the stronger martial artist.
