So I haven't updated you guys in like forever ...

We recently hosted a tournament ... I didn't place in kata (oh well) ... as for sparring ... I placed 2nd ... still having a hard time with the whole point sparring thing ... but yeah that is pretty much all the major stuff ... belt promotions in about two months ... gonna be training like a maniac for that ...

So anyone have any sort of advice for point sparring ...?

It's important to note that a point sparring match is even more like a game of chess than a real fight. It's less about inflicting damage on the opponent than it is about finding the best tactic to deal with a particular opponent and using that tactic to score points quickly. Point sparring is also less forgiving, since (unlike in a real fight) it takes nothing more than a touch to score. One also has to keep in mind that those points are awarded by the umpires and judges and can be a bit hazy at times leading to mistakes, unlike the clear KOs and taps of a ring fight.

I've Studied two forms of Karate, which were Shorin-Ryu, And Ryu-Te (purple belt under Ernest Ortegon Nidan, 3rd degree black belt, under Taika Seiyu Oyata, and holds his rank with Zenkoku
Ryukyu Kempo Kobudo Rengo Kai, OSU!!!! Enough Gushing >_<) don't know if this may help, some people might disagree, but this works really well for me...Read your opponent, lots of people I've point sparred with, ALWAYS, hold before attacking, they wait for you to strike, then they counter, or sometimes they don't, they throw a wild punch, or kick hoping they'd hit something. Which those guys, I find a flurry, or a combo always throws them off, because they're looking for a single hit, so they can counter, but if you fly at them with a few punches, and kicks, they get thrown off. Or sometimes, the first few hits, and then they counter at the last minute, but it doesn't count, because you've already hit them, but that doesn't mean to drop your defense, ALWAYS keep your guard up when you rush in, since you've already fought REAL fights, it should be really easy for you to defend, and attack at the same time...Eventually they're going to pick up on your little scheme, and think okay the first few times (This is if you haven't already won the bout) she rushed in, and tore my head off, so now I'm ready for this next rush, now THIS is the moment you start to play by their rules, feign a rush, once, twice, then BAM attack! This isn't a fight, this is a game of the mind.

And then you have the aggressive fighters, the guys who aren't looking to defend, they're looking to rush in, and eat you up alive, now these types don't show up often, but you can tell who's gonna be, "That guy." by the Kata performances, or by their demonstration they give before the tournament begins, because they are the ones screaming their heads off, and throwing a wide variety of attacks in their demos. These guys are easy if you know what to do, they're gonna come in hot, with lots of attacks, but they aren't looking at their defense too much. Counter hits work well on these guys, but not light counters, REALLY heavy counters. Now you may be thinking, wait a minute?...Didn't you just say that combo's work well on counter guys? Yes, yes they, but your not a counter fighter are you? Your an intelligent fighter, if you protecting yourself as you rush in, because you KNOW he's a counter guy, your anticipating his counter as you strike, so if he throws a punch, or kick you'll be ready for it, because you already know its a counter fighter. So when the guy rushes in, pick your moment, watch him, guys who rush FORWARD, you move to the side, and counter then, or start moving back a little bit, not too much, but enough so when he rushes you, you'll have just another millisecond to prepare, an attack, just a millisecond you say? Well In a split second moment, every extra bit of time is welcomed.

Next tip, How to tell who's a counter fighter: Easy! Does the fighter rush in, or does he flinch a lot whenever the opponent is about to make a move? Are they conservative of their blows, only attacking when the opponent makes a move? There you have it, a counter fighter...

I don't know if this'll be a big help, but its helped me, so...Good luck!

as they say for teaching it takes alot of time and patients and when it comes down to kids you have to have the patients of a saint. i noticed it alot whenever i had to teach some of the lower belts myself they often like to space out or even beg to go with the higher belts to spar and say how its not fair. course i turn it around on them and say "well you know i could be in their sparing right now but instead i wanted to teach you and the other white belts so you guys could be ready for your test, that way you can go in and start sparing." on a personal note im enjoying reading your logs on your progression it always makes me think back at all i have gone though and the strain it was on me trying to kick habbits from my old styles and working to my current styles standards. (example durring katas the hands being down by the belt wile in my old style we chambered up by our ribs since in theory your hands are up in a fight so having them close to that area seemed logical)

I would be more incline to agree ... but this is a college course ... and all of the white belts are adults ... sure some of them eighteen, nineteen year-old kids ... but still adults ... that pretty much knew what they were getting themselves into ... if they didn't then the first day of class hammered the point home ... but I might as well treat them like kids ... with all the whining and moaning ...

Anyways ... glad you are enjoying ...

Oh yeah ... this last Friday class ... we were sparring ... definitely something I need to get used to ... everyone is taller and longer than me ... and with that "in-n-out" style ... and about a minute per round ... just will need to get used to it ...

Try being like Anderson Silva

Hey everyone ... sorry for falling of the planet ... been really busy ...anyway I'll be going for my orange belt this upcoming Thursday ... wish me luck ... but I'm quite confident in my abilities ... cool wink cool wink ...

Anyway ... as for my sparring ... though it took awhile for me to get acclimated to the rule set ... I have adapted quite well ... been focusing on my footwork ... though old habits do die hard ... I still find myself being flat footed sometimes ... either way I have used my experience in muay thai to carry myself in class and tournament ... I have showed off my toughness ... many of the higher belts have mentioned ... "DAMN, you are tough." I really don't mind getting landed on by some of the guys in class ... if anything some people would probably pay money to see some of our sparring sessions ... I love it ... heart 4laugh heart 4laugh ...

So wish me luck everyone ... orange belt or bust ...

Don't worry about being flat footed, I use to be like a brick back in the day, like 90% of the time, I would set up shop, and not budge an inch, because I wan't a very good striker. But it all depends on the numbers you work into it, how many hours you spend developing it. Even if you have to stand yourself in a room all by yourself, just to work on foot work I say do it.

I'm in no place to give advice....But working on a lot of evasion, and leg catch drills will really your sparring

I hope I helped! Best of luck!! We're all believing in you! mrgreen

Oh yeah ... I almost forgot to update you guys ... I passed ... so yeah I'm an orange belt now ... still trying to get used to the color of the belt ... anyway from what I can tell my shinko-kata and kata was clean ... though being modest I thought I did horrible ... sparring was fun ... I took my licks and I gave some back ... I fired of several good body barrages that one of the brown belts I went against said that I knocked the breathe out of them ... overall was definitely fun ... now onward to green belt ... OSU ...

Man I really need to keep up with this ... anyway ... our next belt promotion is speeding on towards us ... I've had some struggles with some of the katas I have needed to learn ... but after some rigorous practice (this semester I have to confess, I have been a lazy a**) ... I believe I am more than ready ... I'm more than up to par with the sparring (gotta love muay thai biggrin biggrin biggrin ) ...

As of right now we orange belts in the class have been focusing more on helping the white belts in class ... sure we have a strong crop this semester ... but unfortunately we have a few that are just so bad that they just might overshadow everyone ... sure two of them are "challenged" and I don't care who you are that is a valid excuse ... but the third ... well he clearly has no idea what he is doing ... he is a copier ... he's not really bothering to learn ... and when I called him out on it ... he claimed to have a "short-term" memory problem ... I call bullshit ... due to the fact that I stay later and I see him in a hip hop class and he does fine ... not only that he is one of those kids that is well pretty much a wannabe ... his mentality on things is that he is a slacker ... so I don't know ... as much as I don't like the guy ... if he fails it not only reflects badly on our sensei ... but also on the rest of the class ... which would suck ...

So in addition to all the worries of everything in class ... there's another white belt that has been really getting on our nerves ... I mention them in a post in morals thread ... and well yesterday all of the colored belts had to fine tuneour white belts ... I had to teach the person I mentioned ... don't worry I was civil ... but the guy wouldn't listen to anything I was telling him ... sure I could probably understand not learning from an orange belt ... but when we eventually switched ... he got picked up by a brown belt ... another one of the girls ... and he wouldn't listen to them neither ... so let's just say that I don't like this guy ...
