So I haven't updated you guys in like forever ...
We recently hosted a tournament ... I didn't place in kata (oh well) ... as for sparring ... I placed 2nd ... still having a hard time with the whole point sparring thing ... but yeah that is pretty much all the major stuff ... belt promotions in about two months ... gonna be training like a maniac for that ...
So anyone have any sort of advice for point sparring ...?
I've Studied two forms of Karate, which were Shorin-Ryu, And Ryu-Te (purple belt under Ernest Ortegon Nidan, 3rd degree black belt, under Taika Seiyu Oyata, and holds his rank with Zenkoku
Ryukyu Kempo Kobudo Rengo Kai, OSU!!!! Enough Gushing >_<) don't know if this may help, some people might disagree, but this works really well for me...Read your opponent, lots of people I've point sparred with, ALWAYS, hold before attacking, they wait for you to strike, then they counter, or sometimes they don't, they throw a wild punch, or kick hoping they'd hit something. Which those guys, I find a flurry, or a combo always throws them off, because they're looking for a single hit, so they can counter, but if you fly at them with a few punches, and kicks, they get thrown off. Or sometimes, the first few hits, and then they counter at the last minute, but it doesn't count, because you've already hit them, but that doesn't mean to drop your defense, ALWAYS keep your guard up when you rush in, since you've already fought REAL fights, it should be really easy for you to defend, and attack at the same time...Eventually they're going to pick up on your little scheme, and think okay the first few times (This is if you haven't already won the bout) she rushed in, and tore my head off, so now I'm ready for this next rush, now THIS is the moment you start to play by their rules, feign a rush, once, twice, then BAM attack! This isn't a fight, this is a game of the mind.
And then you have the aggressive fighters, the guys who aren't looking to defend, they're looking to rush in, and eat you up alive, now these types don't show up often, but you can tell who's gonna be, "That guy." by the Kata performances, or by their demonstration they give before the tournament begins, because they are the ones screaming their heads off, and throwing a wide variety of attacks in their demos. These guys are easy if you know what to do, they're gonna come in hot, with lots of attacks, but they aren't looking at their defense too much. Counter hits work well on these guys, but not light counters, REALLY heavy counters. Now you may be thinking, wait a minute?...Didn't you just say that combo's work well on counter guys? Yes, yes they, but your not a counter fighter are you? Your an intelligent fighter, if you protecting yourself as you rush in, because you KNOW he's a counter guy, your anticipating his counter as you strike, so if he throws a punch, or kick you'll be ready for it, because you already know its a counter fighter. So when the guy rushes in, pick your moment, watch him, guys who rush FORWARD, you move to the side, and counter then, or start moving back a little bit, not too much, but enough so when he rushes you, you'll have just another millisecond to prepare, an attack, just a millisecond you say? Well In a split second moment, every extra bit of time is welcomed.
Next tip, How to tell who's a counter fighter: Easy! Does the fighter rush in, or does he flinch a lot whenever the opponent is about to make a move? Are they conservative of their blows, only attacking when the opponent makes a move? There you have it, a counter fighter...
I don't know if this'll be a big help, but its helped me, so...Good luck!
