Lesson 5 | 제5과
Do you have Korean friends?

In this lesson, we will discuss the following:
1. 있어요/없어요 "have/don't have"
2. The native Korean numbers
3. Counting words
4. The question word 몇 "how many".

-----

Key Sentences and Grammar.
가: 동생 있어요?
나: 네, 있어요.

있어요/없어요 "have/don't have".
In the last lesson we saw that 있어요/없어요 can indicate existence. In this lesson you will see how 있어요/없어요 is also used to indicate what someone possesses.

마크가 집이 있어요. Mark has a house.
마크가 자동차가 없어요.
Mark doesn't have a car.

* Note that in the examples, "house" and "car" are objects in English.
But in Korean, when you use the verb 있어요/없어요 these possessive objects always take the marker 이/가.

The native Korean numbers.
Korean has two systems of numbers -- a native Korean number system and a number system that has its roots in Chinese, called the Sino-Korean numbers. When counting, use the native Korean numbers.

1 하나
2
3
4
5 다섯
6 여섯
7 일곱
8 여덟
9 아홉
10

The numbers 11~19 are made with 열 + the number. So, 12 would be 열둘. 20 is 스물.

-----

Counting words.

가: 가족이 모두 몇 명이에요? (How many people are in your family?)
나: 모두 네 이에요. (Four people all together.)

When counting things or the number of people, but the object first, the native Korean number, followed by a counting word. This counting word changes depending upon the thing that is being counted.

보기: five cups ---> 컵 5 (다섯) 개

Korean number 1~4 and 20 change forms a bit before counting words.
하나 --
둘 --
셋 --
넷 --
스물 -- 스무

보기: two clocks ---> 시계 2 (두) 개

-----

The question word "how many".
몇 is the question word for "how many," used for asking about the number of things. Always use the appropriate counting word after 몇 and before the verb.

가: 표가 장 있어요? How many tickets do you have?
나: (표가) 장 있어요. Two tickets.

제인: 열 명쯤* 있어요.
진수: 그래요? 그럼, 중국 친구도* 있어요?
제인: 아니요, 없어요.

Jinsu: Do you have any Korean friends?
Jane: Yes, I do.
Jinsu: How many do you have?
Jane: About 10.

있어요 I have
how many

없어요 I don't have

New expressions.
(한국 친구가) 몇 명 있어요? How many (Korean friends) do you have?

*쯤 "about, around, almost, something like, or so".
Used when roughly estimating numbers.

*도 "also".
Use 도 after a noun if two subjects share a commonality.
도 replaces the subject marker 이/가.

가: 한국 친구가 10명쯤 있어요. I have about 10 Korean friends.
나: 그럼, 중국 친구 있어요? Then, do you also have Chinese friends?

-----

Dialogue 2 | 대화2

리에: 마크 씨, 동생 있어요?
마크: 네, 있어요.
리에: 동생이 몇 명 있어요?
마크: 두 명 있어요.
리에: 그럼, 형도 있어요?
마크: 아니요, 없어요.
리에: 그럼, 가족이 모두 몇 명이에요?*
마크: 부모님하고* 저하고 동생 두 명, 모두 다섯 명이에요.

Rie: Mark, do you have any younger siblings?
Mark: Yes, I do.
Rie: How many younger siblings do you have?
Mark: I have two.
Rie: Then, do you also have an older brother?
Mark: No, I don't.
Rie: Then, how many people are in your family all together?
Mark: My parents and me and two younger siblings, five all together.

New vocabulary.
동생 younger sibling
two
older brother (of a man)
가족 family
모두 all together, in total
부모님 parents
하고 and (used between nouns)
다섯 five

New expressions.
동생이 몇 명 있어요? How many younger siblings do you have?
가족이 모두 몇 명이에요? How many people are in your family all together?

*가족이 몇 명이에요? "How many people are in your family?"
This question is the same as 가족이 몇 명 있어요?; both ask how many people are in your family.
가족이 몇 명이에요? is a bit more natural.

*하고 "(noun) and (noun)".
Use 하고 to connect nouns, placing it between nouns.
Not that it cannot be used to connect verbs or sentences.

-----

Useful phrases.
Receiving guests.

가: 들어거도 돼요?
나: 네, 들어오세요.
가: May I come in?
나: Yes, please come in.

가: 여기 앉으세요.
나: 네, 감사합니다.
가: Please sit here.
나: Yes, thank you.

가: 커피 드릴까요?
나: 네, 감사합니다.
가: Would you like some coffee?
나: Yes, thank you.
(When someone offers you a drink.
가: 뭐 드시겠어요? "What would you like to drink?"
나: 녹차 주세요. "Green tea, please.")

가: 커피 잘 마셨어요.
나: 또 오세요.
가: Thank you for the coffee.*
(Literally, "I drank the coffee well".)
나: Please come again.

-----

Pronunciation.
--> //; 몇 명 --> / 명/.
몇 is idiosyncratically pronounced as /며ㄷ/. This causes the following pronunciation changes:

(1) When the final consonant sound "ㄷ" in 몇 is followed by an initial consonant "ㄱ" in the next syllable, the "ㄱ" is pronounced as /ㄲ/.

보기: 몇살 --> /며ㄷ쌀/, 몇잔 --> /며ㄷ짠/

(2) The final consonant sound "ㄷ" in 몇 is pronounced as a /ㄴ/ sound before the initial consonants "ㄴ" or "ㅁ" in the next syllable.

보기: 몇 마리 --> /면 마리/, 몇 마디 --> /면 마디/
