Nintendo Skyward Sword doesn't excite me for some reason.

I haven't actually had a zelda game before. The only one I know of right now is Zelda Spirit Tracks. Should I get Zelda Spirit Tracks or some other zelda game? What is the best zelda game today?

Best? Ocarina of Time. To this day, I feel that nothing can top it. If I were you, I'd start at the earlier Zelda games and work forward. (Ocarina, Majora, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, random DS games somewhere in the mix) so when the new Skyward Sword comes out, you're ready for it.

My quick ratings of all the Zelda games (not including CD-i games, Tetra's Trackers, Four Swords for GBA, or Link's Crossbow Training)

The Legend of Zelda - Good, but it's so old, and the formula is now perfected. Still worth playing of course.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - Hard. Very hard. Also, it's a sidescroller. Does not compute. Definitely the worst Zelda game, but still not a bad game in general.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Holy s**t. Not only best game on the SNES, best Nintendo console ever, but also by far the best Zelda game. It completely perfects the 2D Zelda formula, gives you plenty of fun items, enjoyable sidequests, challenging bosses, fun dungeons, I could go on forever. Zelda fans with TRUE insight know LttP beats OoT by far for best Zelda game.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - Zelda on the go. What more could you want? It's definitely the best handheld Zelda game (not counting LttP on GBA), and makes it in my Zelda top five. Be sure to get Link's Awakening DX on GBC. Worth it.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - It's good. I'll give it that. Second best 3D Zelda game for sure. It's long which is good, probably has the best story in a Zelda game, and it introduces Ganondorf. It's overrated of course, but some things are so popular for a reason. This has good reasons. Makes my top five.
The Legend of Zelda - Majora's Mask - If it wasn't for the fact that the actual main game is so short, I'd call it better than OoT. The time system isn't too bothersome, and the game itself is great. It's just that four main dungeons and a final boss don't really add up to as much replay value as OoT. The mask collecting is meant to fill up the time, but some masks are such a pain to get. Still makes me top five.
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages Trying to be Link's Awakening, but overall not as good. It makes up for it by having a lot of side quests which are a pain since they involve link passwords (you need them to get the final story which BLOWS). The Rod of Seasons and Harp of Ages are awesome theme items though, and Din and Nayru are still two of my favorite Zelda characters. Seasons was my first Zelda game actually. They're still fun. It's just that Link's Awakening is better.
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - Better than OoT. saying it now. WW is fantastic. Best 3D Zelda game. It's everything OoT did but better except maybe for story. I'm always going back and forth on whether OoT or WW have a better story. Items are all great, sidequests are enjoyable, graphics have a lot of charm to them really, and the sailing is SO immersive and just great. I usually go sailing around in WW when I'm stressed. Makes my top five by a longshot.
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures - This one is weird. It's the 2D formula, but with these weird quartet gimmicks. I thought it was okay. It's not bad, but the gimmicks don't always work, and four player co-op has the New Super Mario Bros. Wii curse of dicking your friends over. It has purple pimp Toon Link though which I approve of.
The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap - Once again trying to be Link's Awaking but more modern, and by modern I mean casual. Overall it's okay. I think it's as good as FSA. You can find it for cheap now, so if you can't grab LA or OoS/A, get this. It's still Zelda on the go.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Meh. I was disappointed when it came out. The graphics are cool and gritty and set the mood well. Twilight Realm is a cool concept. Midna is a GREAT partner. The combat enhancements are cool overall and horse riding is better than ever. However, the story seems done in other games but better, the sidequests are blah, Zant is a bad antagonist, some useless characters I don't care about, and the game has some of the DUMBEST items I've ever seen. Dominion Rod. Wtfamilookingat.jpg. It's also very easy. Water Temple is a b***h as always, but that's it. Not my favorite.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - Oh god, this game. I put this one right above Zelda II as second worst Zelda game ever. The controls aren't bad, but quirky sometimes. Your fairy is annoying. The sidequests are annoying. The combat is okay. The items are a bit weird or lame. The dungeons are boring and easy. THE BACKTRACKING IS ******** STUPID. IT'S LIKE METROID PRIME 2 BUT A PAIN IN THE a**. Oh, and they manage to make sailing long, boring, and stupid. I miss my WW sailing. I only beat it because I must beat every Zelda game.
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - Much better. They fixed the problems I had with PH. Dungeons are better, no fairy (badass Zelda instead), sidequests are better, backtracking is NO problem, and the train system is much better than the DS sailing. Definitely a step up, and probably my second favorite handheld Zelda.

              Overall top 5
              1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
              2. the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
              3. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
              4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
              5. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
