The most important change, Intellectual, Spiritual and Emotional change is difficult. From personal experience and learning about people, I've come to that conclusion and understanding. People are dysfunctional. They do things that do not work. They try to control the world and others. If a person knew the depth of ignorance, resistance, path and price of others to change, they'd stop trying to change other people so much. They'd know that, if they changed themselves. We cannot force another to change. People even cannot force themselves to change out there ego. We need Intellectual, Spiritual and Emotional change. We need to be willing to look at things in a bigger perspective, without shame and judging ourselves. We learn to have a better relationship with our own individual humanity.
For example. Religion, people have not, cannot change the mind, heart, and spirit of a religious person with all the evidence in the world. They actually fight the change. They defend and put down other claims. Look at slavery and women's rights, Its was women that fought for their rights, not men that gave it to them without trouble. Slavery was fought by the north, segregation continued for another 100 or so years. Change will happen, because better things will come up, but it will be a fight. A lot of sensitive subjects will need to be touch upon. Each person is responsible for making up their mind, for processing and evaluating things. We are all individual, we do not depend on others to change for us to change. A lot of things will seem to make sense in ways that are dysfunctional and unrealistic. IT will be trial and error. Thankfully people like me/us have already done a lot work. mrgreen

" What can change the nature of a man?"
Many of us are comfortable. A few are happy. An extreme minority are rich.
Comfortable is an interesting situation. You can be uneasy, happy, outraged, or depressed and still feel comfortable. I look at the media they honestly are trying to scare us, but not too much. Just before we decide to get off of our asses and do something we are assured that someone is already handling the situation. "Well, good, I didn't want to break my precious routine anyway." We are kept within our comfort zones. If you had to fight for something would you be able to miss a few days of work? Notice all of the government coupons for converter boxes so that you won't lose your television signal? We are kept poor, comfortable, and just a little scared. The government has us right where they want us. Before we can act you have to become extremely uncomfortable, then I have to, and then she has to, and them over there, and perhaps the entire state of Texas or at least Road island. All of these people have to be willing to travel, miss work, and endure ridicule.
We need to get pissed and stay pissed. We require total immunity to logic, prudence, and comfort. Because the Government will use all of those things against us. Extreme anger is the only thing I can think of that grants a total Immunity to those things.
As for me personally I changed my routine once, for a few months it was quite a healthy and beneficial change. when the novelty wore off I went right back to my original unhealthy routine. I'm comfortable.
The quote at the top came from the PC game: Planescape Torment I meant it as a joke given the subject of the discussion.......... You had to be there.

DearSX We are all individual, we do not depend on others to change for us to change. Groups need leaders because change is hard. People start to ask "Is it really worth all this effort?" People get tired of trying, of doing, they lose enthusiasm. People need someone to pick them up when they are down, and to kick there asses when they slack off, they need to be reminded of the rewards because the goal is so close yet so far away. After you decide to change someone, be it man or god, has to be there to hold you to it. Edit: my apologies DearSX, That last sentence should read: After you decide to change , someone either man or god, has to be there to hold you to it. I put the comma in the wrong place and that messed up my meaning. sweatdrop Your response was absolutely correct.

Zebulous DearSX We are all individual, we do not depend on others to change for us to change. Depend is also different then Rely on. Somethings we cannot do alone, but happiness is something not to set ourselves up to depend on another to own. Most everybody is an addict in some way, IMO. response to the above comments suggestion, from Zebolous...... That is if they listen we can guide them to change, not give them the change. If they want to go along for it. Good luck providing support and guiding if you do not know what they are going through. You'll need to guide yourself down into the same pain. Go into things you do not even know. People do all those things above to themselves. They kick their own a**. They remind themselves of rewards, than get drunk to "reward themselves". People who try to change them end up enabling them, addicts once they get reminded of rewards, they want instant gratification. They go into fantasy to feel good, or to their spouses, or kids etc etc. Once they feel down, they want instant gratification some more, they even kick themselves down, to feel a little up afterward. Your treating them well or even giving them attention will enable them to seek instant gratification from your feelings towards them, its back to normal for them. People live in crap on purpose, so they can feel a little better after. They believe crap so they can blame others for doing something wrong and feel like they are better people. People are really really deep in denial, suppression, etc etc. They will change when they've had enough. People getting tired of changing? Try change hurts. Change is taking a risk, one that can easily lead to pain. Try do to the change another is doing, you will need to go through the same thing they are going through and then look at yourself. You'll see coming out of denial hurts ie. the truth hurts thing. Under the surface their is fear, shame, denial, confusion, pain, dysfunction, etc etc. People are getting pulled in a lot of directions, They do not have answers or even know how to apply those answers. You think they want to listen to someone talking smack to them about messing up? That's motivation? That will remind them of the shame they are carrying, fear, hurt, etc etc. Its very very complicated and vicious. One people feel so bad, they'll try to bring you down, they bring themselves down. People need themselves. I agree we can help, but only when people give us a chance. We cannot change them and make them open up to us. I mean maybe you wanna try and change Osama bin Laden, torture him and see if he'll want to change and be good and honest. That is a lot of risk, I do not see how its worthwhile. I've been through enough pain and risking and learning to know my boundaries. I've gone deep enough into this mess and tried so many things and seen how deep this stuff goes to know I cannot change another. I know how to change and how to help others, but I cannot make them listen. I know they do not even know how to listen really. Yea listening is a learned behavior, they have not learned how to listen, and learning means change and change means pain and fear. Go beat more shame and fear into people and see if they still have faith in doing things that way. I am a leader, I think what I said is helpful, although perhaps I wrote it in a mean way. What you wrote helped me also. I opened up a lot of looking at it. I've been through change, hour after hour. Pain after pain. I've been guided by others. I cannot imagine how people will come to call for a big enough change. They are doing it, its getting better, but I dunno how long before they get the appropriate sick of things to motivation ratio. I can be happy though, So I do that. Its hard enough just being happy.

Instead we can remember what will works for and go from there. Sometimes we go back to doing something we stopped doing, it may turn out to work for us even just for a while, in the future. Like lying to ourselves, maybe we decide to stop, but then we deal with a big tragedy, and its the best option perhaps. etc etc. Others can remind us of things we may not remember ever knowing. I believe that is how relationships work. They do not provide us with change, or hold us up, they remind us of some Truth. We can then use that truth as we see fit. See we do not get controlled either. Others do not need to be mean to us either. We deserve better. Also explains why trying to change another is just going to be a reminder, not something that results in real change.

I think we are all given a choice to change, some people accept it and some don't... though I also think we just have a little space for change, we can change a little but I don't think it's possible to completely change.

The biggest change I have seen in America in recent years has been the whole "green" movement. It's incredible how many companies and industries are pushing it.
So yes, I do believe in change.

The green movement is becoming a huge trend as well, therefore more people are actually doing something to make a bit of a difference. And my generation is very liberal...and the younger generations are even more liberal then mine so yeah...I agree with you.

Jacki Kane It seems like a lot of the threads are coming down to one thing. People need to change. There are those who think that its not possible, that Amerikan's are too blind, or whatever there reasons. But doesn't this last election show that a majority of American's want it? Who knows what Obama's intentions really are but the majority of American's voted for change. I truly believe that change is possible. wanting change and being willing to change are 2 very different things. true americans want the environment to be safe, technology to be advanced to the point were nothing gives off a waste of any kind, and sevral other things. it dosn't mean we will completely if ever embrace the changes wich will make the world a better place, wich very well might force us to change things we have grown acustomed to for many decades. ending point is that although we want change i highly doubt that people will accept the change they seek while giving up convinences.

Humanity has gained the rue of earth from our ability to learn and adapt to situations, we have adapted to past situations (predators) and now we have to adapt to our current situations. And we will adapt to our future situations.
