Well, yes....but being capable of compassion and still chosing to do evil makes it clear just how strong his ambition is, and ambition is often what drives people to do the horrible things they do.

Ok I see where you're coming from.
Yeah...though the "flashback/future scene" with "God-Raist" giving the emerald to the now dead Bupu was really touching. Though I find his treatment of Par Salian to be a bit more "Raist" than the Bupu thing....
Kinda makes you wonder...did he go through with his plan in Legends, simply for revenge on Par Salian for destroying his body and cursing his sight? Or did he somehow lose his way when he realized "D'oh! I cant create life..."?

Well... from my understanding he was sick of everyone feeling sorry for him because of his less than perfect health, from even BEFORE the test. And after the test it was a bit worse because of the major "deformaties" he recieved as a result.
And his whole "going to be a god" thing was more of an act of defiance to EVERYONE saying "Na Na! Look what I can do, and all you pathetic people could do is feel sorry for me and run in fear!"
All in all he just wanted to be accepted for who, and what, he was and not an object of everyone's pitty. Which is why he was so good to Bupu and the gully dwarfs. No one really realized THEIR potential and they simply looked down on them as lesser beings, and laughed at them or pittied them.
Also I think he also wanted to prove Par Salion wrong... but in the end that plan backfired on him. So he just wanted to distroy EVERYTHING in his fustration and fury.

I don't know how much I've ever seen Raist want so much destruction on that great a level. Yeah, when he thought Caramon had betrayed him with magic in his Test, he tried to destroy him, but I think it has to be personal for Raist to put that much effort into it. I mean, how many times has he just dropped something as soon as it was done being useful? I think he'd want stuff to stay intact if only to lord it over them.

I'm sure even the Great Raistlin Majorie has his moments of "temper tantrums" in his lifetime and I'm sure that realizing your "grand plan" of being a god backfire its quite "tantrum" worthy. Unfortunately for him since he's a god that tantrum kinda ended up distroying EVERYTHING.

And I seriously cant believe I've had to debate over how Voldemort from Harry Potter could in no way defeat Raistlin....There is a significant power difference, and I won't say which one is a one sided character. (Forgive this...but I need to vent...I've debated this with roughly 60 different people who randomly viewed my profile and are offended by my "Voldemort is a Noob" comment.)

I think I may "borrow" that line from you, Raist, if you don't mind. And if you look at it in the broad sense of things... Voldemort IS a Noob when compared to Raistlin or Fizban or even Dalimar, in several senses of the phrase.

Raislin's cynical and pessimistic ways remind readers that anything bad could happen at any given time, even in the middle of something good. Raistlin seems to dwell on that philosophy.
