I'm directing a monologue for an alternative high school festival and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I want something contemporary and, as the name implies, alternative. I'm thinking black comedy, or some such.

Oh...you could always take your favorite comteporary book or short story and condence it. Might I suggest "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman. Quite an entertaining short story I'm reading for english class at the moment. About conformity and whatnot. Written by Harlan Ellison. If your interested.

Length: Depends on the arrangement; some arrangements have more repetition in them than others. The version I have is about 2 minutes, maybe a little more.
Song Type: Solo, upbeat
Vocal Range: Alto, though it isn't too low and sopranos should be able to handle it.
What's it meant for: It's fairly good for range, also shows character. Good for a comedy, or just something where they demand an upbeat song.
Name: Eidelweiss
Artist/Show: The Sound of Music
Gender: Female
Length: Depends on the arrangement, blah blah, repetition, blah blah. The version I have is probably about 2 minutes-ish. Maybe a little less.
Song Type: Solo, slow.
Vocal Range: Alto. Doesn't go very low, so a soprano should be able to handle it.
What's it meant for: Anything, really. It's very pretty, and shows range, so it can be used for really anything where they don't need a song that's upbeat.

What's it ment for: It definitely would be good for a performance featuring a character that isn't exactly evil, per se, but just mean. It's worthy of the evil step-sisters or another rotten character.
(Edna is teasing Maggie, a fellow worker at a laundromat, about her fantasies) Oh, girls, gather round and pretend to be interested. Maggie is going to tell us a story, aren't you Maggie? Wait, don't tell me. This is the one where you are the crown princess to the islands of Baden Baden. Or could it be the one where you are the secret daughter to the king of Siam, whisked away to America by a villianous band of marauding pirates? No. I know. It'll be your favorite little lie- I mean story. Horace Greensmith is coming to marry you. You see girls, I can sum it up like this: Maggie is engaged to be married to a weathly man of importance, aren't you Maggie? We of course have never seen him. He apparently comes around when we're not here. Odd we've never met this "Horace." Oh, well. We will miss you. When is he coming for you again?

I've got a couple things I've used in my past, I'll post them later when I get the chance.
As it is though, I need two songs of varying styles and one has to be from a broadway musical, and a monologue for Winter Express auditions. I think I've got a monologue already, and I'd like to do "He ain't heavy, he's my brother" by the Hollies (it's got a harmonica solo, so I could show off a bit. blaugh ), but it's not from a broadway show, and it's slow paced. I'm having trouble finding a fast paced tenor solo from a broadway musical, and I'm NOT singing "Today for you, Tomorrow for me"... sorry, but Angel isn't a tenor he (she) is an... T-alto, maybe even a Sopran-er... Lol. If anyone's got anything, PM me!!!

Vocal Range: I'm bad at this. Seeing as I'm an alto though, I must say it's okay.

Length: About two-minutes, but you don't have to do every verse.

I need a monologue to get from the Youth wing into the advanced group so I don't do the same stuff over and over... It can't be too long... 3 minutes at the most... I'm 13 years old...
Any ideas?

Length: Hm... just under 90 seconds, I believe. It depends on how you read it.
Type: Comedy
What's it ment for: A quick audition that's gotten me into a program with only a 40% chance of getting accepted. It makes the casting directors laugh if it's done correctly, and it's a great way to show off a good British accent!
Oh , oh my goodness... Daddy, Daddy, I was walking! With little baby, little baby monkey, and I drew a picture. Suddenly monkey starts crying. But I turned around and there's a whole fleet of them. There's an army of monkeys a huge tree full of them, Screaming at me: ooh ooh eee eee, ahh ahh! Terrified, I was, terrified! But suddenly I was swinging in the vines up in the air. Swinging, flying, I was in the air! And I'm all surrounded... And Daddy they took my boot! Oh, but I was saved, I was saved by a flying wildman in a loincloth!

Vocal Range: Tenor, though lower voices may also stand a chance, if you're just that amazing! biggrin
What's it meant for: There's no specific genre it's intended for. This song is to show off that you're multi-talented!!! If you can play acoustic guitar and sing at the same time: I suggest you look up the Tabs or whatever you use and learn both the song and the guitar part, and audition with both of them! Might turn out nice! sweatdrop
