"Yes, Grand Master. I know, I'm Sorry." Martin bowed his head. "I shall go to prepare my room. May the force always be with you." Martin turned and headed for the location described by the principal.

Martin entered his room and propted the door open, so students could enter if they wanted to. He looked around and saw a box he asked be delivered. Opening it he found garlen which proptly hung itself around the ceiling molding of the room and a wreath flew to adorn the back wall. With the box empty, Martin turned and found the hologram programing control on the wall. With a little work to get used to the set up martin finally set it to cause a light snow fall which never, quite landed or built up on any surface. With that all said and done. Martin retunred to his desk wo continue reading his book.

(Son_of_Bhaal, I love your Avi, and i thought your posts were good. Welcome to the guild ^_^)

Ali walked in to the room. She liked math and hoped the teacher wouldn't be a bore. The room was really pretty, and the teacher behind the desk looked nice. She silently took a seat, happy to be in a quiet class room the first time since she first got into the academy.

Martin dog-eared the page he was on as a girl he assumed was a student entered. "Hello. My name is Master Nigem. You are?" Martin smiled warmly at his visitor.

"Hello, I'm Alfuncoot. Nice to meet you Master Nigem" Ali gave a quick bow. "Is there anywhere particualr I should sit, master?"

Martin gave a curtasy nod. "Al, if I may call you that, I like to know my students. Tell me a little about yourself. Home, training, reason you chose to take math, etc. Just so we're better acquainted and can be more comfortable."

Ali smiled, but felt a little uncomfortable. She felt that this teacher was nice, even sincere, but she still hated to talk about herself to those other than her peers. Oh, well here it goes, she thought.

"Yeah Al is great, most people call me Ali, but its nice to have a little change. Well, I my home is in Coruscant, the nice part. My family is...well, lets just say, in no need for money."

Ali took a momentary pause, here came the not so fun part, "Now, training is a strange topic...I was until recently a sith, actually one of the promient ones in this school, by master being izzy, who was the sith apprentice to our old principal vader4ever. But...umm...this makes me a little uncomfortable...lets just say I had a change of heart...and my master doesn't quite know yet. Well, I mean I told him, he just hasnt responded back, hes on a mission in the outer boundaries...." Ali felt her face blushing.

"Anyway, there you go....oh, why I like math right? Well, the truth is I like all subjects...I pretty good at them all. But I took math especially because it relaxes me, once you know the material, its easy and then your mind relaxes. Not saying that this class will be easy...I mean I like a challenge. Thats another thing I like about math. I also like when it gets abstract, questions with derivatives, where you have not only everything in variables, but with rates of change. Its maddening sometimes, but hey I like it."

Ali stopped talking, and felt anything but comfortable. She wondered if the teacher thought she was just kissing up but hey whatever, at least she had said the truth.

Martin smiled as she spoke. She talked a lot, but when such is done in the name of enthusiasm and passion he could see no reason why it should be seen as a negative atribute.

"You seem to have a relatively exciting story. I, as you can proabably tell by my crimson skin, I'm a Zeltron. I came from a middle class family myself, where we never needed money, but certainly could not aford to live in the lap of luxury, so to speak.

"My own training was under a grey jedi on my planet and I am a grey Jedi, myself. I'm sure you know what a grey jedi is, of course. I simple did not like all those silly restrictions and rules for a Jedi knight. No, it is much simpler to live life free and unhampered.

"So then for math. Where would like to begin, any requests? so far the class is all yours," Martin finished rising from his seat and walking over to the stack of text books he had pulled out of his bag.

Ali couldn't help but think of her friend Komugi when he said he was a grey jedi. Komugi was also a grey jedi, well she called it a "Jeth", but Ali had never met anyone one who she actually seemed seriously a grey jedi. She thought that was pretty cool and interesting.

"Um...well...I've never taken a math couse that applys its teachings before. Well...other than science, which kinda does that. I'm not quite what applicable math means? What is it? How is it different from other math and science courses?"
PostPosted: Fri Jan 04, 2008 3:27 pm

Martin gained a twinkle in his eye at her confusion. "I knew I'd be asked this. There are two parts to applicable math. The first part is learning the math and when it can used, that's the typical part. The second part is learning to do these quickly. This is the part that makes it more useful."

"Applicable math is focused on being able to do calculations quickly in your head allowing you to determine seemingly complex mathematical solutions when time is of the essence, you're piloting a jet or you are in combat. Simply put it's math that you can use in real life, both because you know the math and can do it without wasting valuable time."

"Shall we start then with projectile motion? It can come in handy for low-tech and improvised weaponry." Martin picked a physics book off of the table and pulled some copied page from inside the front cover.

Ali couldn't help but whistle when Master Martin said that the calculations would be done in her head. That seemed like the most amazing thing she had ever heard. It was one thing to life a ship with the force, and another to think that clearly and fast! She wondered if she should take out her paper and pencil, or if everything was suppose to be mental. She decided to take it out, figuring that to learn the topic she'd have to do it the long way. She had to smile at the topic. The only thing she remembered about projectile motion is that the velocity was zero at the maximum. She opened her mind, ready to learn.

Martin nodded as she took out her paper, hoping she would understand that paper was allowed for this test. "Very well. First, let's begin with the formula for a falling object." Martin walked to the board and wrote the following equation on the board.

H2 = H1 + V*t + .5*g*(t)<---(squared, no clue how to type that)

"In this equation, H2 is the ending height, H1 is the starting height, V is the initial velocity in meters per seconds, t is time in seconds, and g is the acceleration due to gravity. Do you have any questions thus far?"

"Umm...the * are mulitplication signs and t is squared?"
PostPosted: Sat Jan 05, 2008 4:02 pm

"Correct," Martin replied nodding. "Now the total distance traveled, that is H1 - H2, is the distance which needs to be estimated and it is the vertical distance in this equation. The second measurement which needs to be estimated is the initial velocity. This is positive if the object is moving upwards, and negative if the object is moving downwards. If a planet is of 'standard' gravity gravity will be 9.81 meters per second squared. Planets of standard gravity include Gaia, Alderaan and Corellia."

"Wait what if H1 and H2 are the same. If the projectile goes up and down then won't H1-H2 show the total displacement? Not the distance?"

(haha, "standard gravity include gaia" thats funny! blaugh )
