I think as far as the list.. bauhaus started it all but it goes back further... to the raw emotion of the original Pink Floyd ..Circa Syd Barrett and lot's of the experimental and art rock of the early 70's,, from Silver Apples and their experimentation with electronic music, to early Bowie and the Stooges..

Joy Division was the first true goth band, then came Bauhaus a few years later. The sound of true goth music(t least in my opinion) should have lots of bass, not too much guitar, put it behind the bass sound, but with distortion and reverb and maybe some delay, the vocals should be low in a baritone-bass range with, of course, more reverb. The reverb gives the song a dark-ambience to it. You could use a lot of dead-notes on the guitar while scraping it against an amplifier to give it that Bela Lugosi's Dead type of sound. I really don't think that today's music really get the feeling of Gothic anymore, the HIM, NIN, System of a Down, Smashing Pumpkins, and possibly Muse are the only bands that have come close to that sound. Goth music should not be anything close to straight-forward anger like metal or punk is, though it should, when performed live, should have a lot of theatrics. As for the last post, Pink Floyd did have all that, but they were considered and Art rock, or Acid Rock band, they were more in the mainstream of music rather than left-of-the-dial.

Paradox92 I really don't think that today's music really get the feeling of Gothic anymore, the HIM, NIN, System of a Down, Smashing Pumpkins, and possibly Muse are the only bands that have come close to that sound. That couldn't be any further from the truth. There's a whole slew of modern goth bands that have managed to emulate and/or build on the sound of the originals, and I would not include any of the bands you listed in that.

System of a Down + HIM+ Muse= Epic fail at being anything other then s**t sorry to say.
And as for most modern day goth bands, I try to avoid them like the plague. They completely bastardize the original sound. I've yet to find one I really like.

I've yet to find one I really like.Lol, I couldn't agree more with you, but I was saying that they came close to that actual vintage goth sound. I don't really listen to or like them HIM, I have just heard from others that they are the new goth band of the era, lol. That's B.S. I do think that System of a Down's first album (especially the song Spiders) has that mood to it. What I find as ironic as Hell is that I had my friend (how is supposed to be an expert opr so at Gothis culture) listen to Joy Division's She's Lost Control, and she didn't approve of it as material that someone like her would like and said that she got bored with it from the beggining. All I have to say is WTH?

I'd have to say Joy Division... with Bauhaus following very closely behind.
I say this with complete and utter restraint... as I want to scream It's The Sisters of Mercy!!! rofl They are my fav listed. biggrin Got to love Eldritch. But alas... they have a lot more Hard Rock styling. First and Last and Always is really the only "gothic" album they have put out... Minus some songs on SGWBM.

3 top goth bands are definitley
bauhaus, siouxsie and the banshees and the damned.
and then there are fields of the nephilim, the cure, joy division (which is slightly more postpunk but when you see "goth" bands now you will gladly say that joy division is goth)
yes, bauhaus is top for me.
