I, too, see Sephiroth as more of a victim than a total baddie. He was lied to his entire life, and the realization of this was too much, and he snapped. His actions were that of a madman.
However, he is still a villain. Insane or not, victim or not, being lied to does not give you an excuse to try to destroy an entire freakin' planet. Considering his past, he already had it in him. There's a reason why no one, aside from Cloud and Zack, ever seemed to really trust Sephiroth. He was bred, born, and raised to be a killing machine, and you know how well his career went, until he started killing everyone, including Shinra's own employees. He wasn't evil, no, but he was very much a jerk, even before he believed some crime had been committed against him. You can't blame Jenova entirely for his actions, though she no doubt gave him more reason to do what he did. If she was in complete, or even partial, control of him, wouldn't she have told him to put all his power into it when he fought Cloud, instead of doing what he always does and underestimating his opponent's power? She's an ebil alien lady, but she's not dumb. A master would control her puppet better, if it were at all possible. He eventually would have gone on a mass killing spree, whether or not he discovered the truth about himself.

Dyne wasn't bad, either. He was slightly insane (and with far more reason than Sephiroth), he had lost all hope, and in the end, he kills himself because he realizes that he'll never be able to do anything but destroy. You can't compare him and Sephiroth.
Dyne: Almost died, saw his village burned to the ground and his friends and family murdered by Shinra troops. Believed for years that his daughter was dead, and knew that his wife was.
Sephiroth: Doesn't know his parents. If he did know who they were, he wouldn't care. Clings to an alien corpse as "Mommy". Didn't know about his past, but wouldn't have cared had it not been so suddenly revealed to him. Enjoyed killing people anywho, and was just given an excuse to do it even more.
You choose the less fortunate one. As for me, I say Dyne was an angel compared to Sephiroth.

Rob: Erm, I don't quite understand where you're going with the Vincent thing, but I'll leave it be until I'm sure of what you're saying.

I'm not sure whom is worse between Sephiroth and Dyne (by the way, nice theory Camcorder rofl ). I was going to come in hear with my awesome powers of reasoning blazing. But it seems to me like I have been beaten to it.

I will direct you to Psirynn's post (6 before this one), as it is an Excellent explanation of Sephiroth's nature, and motives. Congratulations on an awesome post Psirynn 3nodding

I would quote Psirynn's post, but this may get long...

So, in that post, the Jenova section. What is something that stands out in Jenova control? Its something Cloud struggles with throughout the entire game. Its having a weak mind. We all know that Sephiroth wasnt a weak person in either body or mind. So, Jenova couldnt have had control really at all. I point this out because, in my theoretical view, Jenova only had control in Sephiroths mind at one point that we see and that was when he looked into the tank. He became unsure of himself, letting his guard down mentally, and Jenova took advantage of that little instance to plant the seeds of evil within his mind. Sephiroth, pushed along by the will of something that wasnt his own, followed that voice of reason. He read every book and report within the Shinra Mansion, learned of his creation and birth, learned of everything but the truth that he wasnt an Ancient, like the reports claimed.
After that point, Sephiroth had control and went about the act of becoming a god the way he wanted to, only using what Jenova had planted in his mind as a minor guideline. He knew the basic plan, and everything else was just extra. Sephiroth wasnt a victim, he was a psychotic individual, and for good reason as well. His mind was his own, but with a loophole that could allow another being in. Reading about that, knowing that, and being the person with that mind, would be frightening and would very well lead to insanity. Sephiroth was a technically insane person.

On Dyne now, he went insane for the reasons you posted, but the acts he commited certainly rivaled Sephiroths. Murder on the level that Dyne had commited, all in the name of a loss of hope for his own life, is definately on par with murder for the sake of it. Both of them were insane, and it just so happened that Sephiroth was partially immortalized because of something unnatural within him. Sephiroth and Dyne are a viewpoint of the same personality, but with the added effect of that immortality on Sephiroths part. Each has their lives as they know it stripped form them, everything they believe in is blown away, and they want vengeance for what happened to them. Both of them killed, and were hunted down because of it, beaten, and commited suicide. Sephiroth just wasnt allowed to die.

That ends me for the night. Basics are Sephiroth was insane, not a victim, and Dyne and Sephiroth are the same character, with a different coat of paint and genetic makeup.
