the play is so much better than the movie, it sickens me. I never thought I'd say this before, but the makeup on stage was better than the movie. Good God, that's never true. Music of the Night is truly seductive on stage, because the Phantom isn't wear gloves, like in the movie travesty.
The only thing that might work better in the movie version is the chandelier. I totally expected it to fall on the audience, as it should do, but at least it going to the stage makes more sense. In the stage version, it actually floats to the stage. I was disgusted with that.

And just how would you do the Chandelier if YOU were directing the musical, then? Have it kill thirty audience members per evening? Completely destroy the stage each night? Use your imagination, don't expect the show to do it for you.

Well, the way it was written in the New York Daily News at the time, it was going to fall a few feet and then there would be a blackout. That's pretty much the only reason I saw it in the first place. You could have it shake as if it got loose or was getting loose, and fall just a few inches and then have a blackout. That wouldn't be as lame as a floating chandelier is.

The rate of travel for the chandelier varies from production to production. In most productions, it does drop a little before swinging to the stage. The American tour has the slowest, I think, and London one of the faster. Or maybe that's Australia. I can't remember anymore, but let it be known.
Besides, it doesn't necessarily 'float'. It just... glides at a controlled rate.

When I saw it on Broadway over Spring Break, it went pretty quick... it looked very realistic, and it did shake before falling. And there was a flash of light when it hit the stage... very well done, I thought.

The permanent productions are generally the ones who have faster chandeliers, mostly because the rigging is secure, I'd imagine. They have to be much more careful on the tour in unfamiliar theatres.

The effects in the movie were, of course, better than in the stage play. I mean it's hollywood. The colors were magnificant, the crashing chandelier, it was all very stunning. But when it comes down to the performance the stage play takes the cake.
And yes the Chandelier I saw was a bit slow in descending but you can't expect much more. Especially since it's a travling company and they arn't using THEIR equipment, they have to be extra careful.
