Hi everyone!
Even though I've been at the Pro-Life movement for a while, I'm still a really crummy debater. Does anyone have any tips for me?

avoid personal insults. if they provide statistics, ask them to back them up. question almost everything they say. provide as much back up for your facts as possible.

Don't bring religion in, always check the dictionary...
(just a break here, when they say, there you go with word games, it means you're right, and they don't want to admit it. It's crucial to a debate to use correct words; the second a lifer says murder, they're all over it, but it's perfectly fine for them to disregard that part in the definition of baby. Unborn or recently born. UNBORN. Definitions help because then you've got it set out exactly what you're saying and they can't trip you up on it.)
don't let them get you angry, don't take insults to heart. It looks a lot better when you get insulted but ignore it or brush it off rather than retaliating. Personal squibbles take away from the point, which benefits choicers in many ways.

If the fetus isn't a human than what is it? Why would we give birth to it in a hospital and not a vets office? Why is the woman giving birth to something non-human?
If it's not living why does it need nutrients? How does it grow? Why doesn't it stay the exact same when it's aborted? Why doesn't the body naturally abort it?
Find those kinds of flaws in there arguements. There's a whole bunch of them so it's not overly difficult. They think one way, so when you force them to think another it throws them a bit off guard.
Be careful with what you say, one mistake and they're over your like a pack of wolves.
Remember that laws are ethics and morals of certain people, so yes we CAN force our morals onto people, infact we do it every day.
Remember that they're not fighting for every woman's rights. There are women out there who have lived through abortions (as in their mother's tried to abort them.) the pro-choice cause tells them that they don't have a right to be here.
Remain calm, they can make some low blows but don't sink to their level.
And lastly, if you need help or don't know what to say feel free to message me (and I'm sure other people in the guild.) to ask for help. We can give you hints and ideas of what to say.

Ask them if it's wrong to kill a neighbor. When they say yes, ask why. ALl they'll be able to come up with is, "It's wrong," "That's a person," or "It's illegal." Those are VERY easy to work with. I mean, first you have two that are opinion-based decisions, than the last one you can point out that abortion used to be illegal too, and most prochoicers are also for gay rights and you can point out that that's illegal now, so does that make it wrong? It's a shock to discover that they force our morals on other people every day, but I'm sure they'll get over it.

The -very- first thing about debating, is you need to make sure you have time to debate. Don't go in, drop your opinion, and run. No one on either side likes people who do that, it's annoying. Second, make sure you have the stomach for it. As everyone has said, they are going to insult you and be just plain rude. You have to swallow it and move on.
A very important thing to remember is that Pro-Choicers have all sorts of scapegoats. For instance, Godwin's Theory: That whoever brings up Hitler or Nazis in a debate first loses. Don't get all upset when they mention these, just point out the fact that we are calling them Nazis or whatever for -this- reason, for things that directly co-relate.
Although you will at times think of them as bad people, remember that they aren't all bad. They tend to be rude and sarcastic, but they aren't bad people persay.
Copy the part of my signature on the subject, and paste it whenever they say to 'not force your morals on anyone.' whee And, of course, feel free to message me if I'm on and you need advice.

Dyogee what would be the best response if they tell me tht I don't know nothing because I don't have a uterus? "Is 1+1=2? How would you know, you don't have a degree in mathematics." Well, that's a bit dramatic. "Why is grass green?" Once they get into the chloroplasts, say, "How do you know that?" They'll probably tell you they learned it from school, or everyone learned that. Then you ask them if they've ever actually looked at multiple cells under microscopes and determined that plant cells have them and animal cells don't. Most likely, they will either lie or say, "no." Then tell them that they don't know anything because all of their information comes from other people and not firsthand. Maybe. I've never been up against that one because I HAVE a uterus, lol.

Simply tell them that you're not making any assumptions about carrying to term, and labour. But that neither of those things matter when it comes to someone's life. Also by their reasoning, a pro-choice male would have no right to contridict anything I say, because I'm a female and it's solely a female issue.

Wow guys. Thanks for all the advice!
How do you go about answering them when they say that they're personally opposed but want to let the woman hangle it individually? I've used the example of the suicidal friend (would you intervene or not...) but that's also a bit controversial. Does anybody have a better example?

Diadema Wow guys. Thanks for all the advice! How do you go about answering them when they say that they're personally opposed but want to let the woman hangle it individually? I've used the example of the suicidal friend (would you intervene or not...) but that's also a bit controversial. Does anybody have a better example? Tell them that it's the mother's choice what she does with HER body. It's not what she's doing to her body that we have a problem with, it's what she's doing to someone elses body. A fetus is a seperate entity. It has its own DNA and must sustain a completely seperate life than hers.
She's allowed to make her own decisions but we have a problem with her making her unborn child's desicions.

I've always knew that that was a stupid argument. but sometimes I'm not good at utting my thoughs down so it's hard to show why that argument doesn't work.

This is why you rarely see me in ED debating. I'm hardly ever on for any length of time; it really makes it hard to effectively debate there because I'm only on Gaia for brief snipits of time, like 10 minutes ever couple of hours...
