Lorelei glanced at the sky, squinting at the unpleasant sun, even through the canopy.

"I do hope I wont regret this."

She fell in behind Jay, deciding that her two weaknesses had to be sunlight and dealing people she wasn't planning to assault.

Following along with her new acquaintances, Mai chose to ignore the fire she had left in the woods. In the distance thick black clouds were forming, but Mai neither noticed or cared.

"What do they serve there? Ooh, do they have cheesecake?"

Jay groans at the fire starter and holds back punching the girl. "Lorelei, I know we've just met, but you seem to have a few tricks up your sleeve, you got anything to clean up the mess our...travel mate...has started?" He glares at the girl.

Lorelei glanced over her shoulder. Clearly, this girl had never learned what comes with great power. Or perhaps she, much like Lorelei herself, chose not to care.

"I can take care of it, but as soon as I think of something you would have to offer, you will owe me."

She didn't know how far the fire had spread in this short time, but she was exasperated enough to not hold back. She took her knife from its place and gently sliced the index and middle fingers of the hand that was already injured, and began drawing runes in the air, muttering again in her strange language. The blood from her fingers floated in the air before her as she drew, like a magical red ink. She closed her eyes.

"Master, forgive me for this trifle." she said gently. The blood-ink sizzled and boiled away, and a burst of warm, crackling wind flew out of Lorelei's body. Opening her eyes again, they were glowing a faded lavender, the pupils missing entirely.

"I'll return shortly." she whispered, and walked calmly back to the forest fire.

"That bear would be proud." she thought with a smirk.

Mai watched, a bit fascinated by the proceedings. "I wanna see.." She said in a surprisingly less immature and whiny tone. This was much more complicated magic than anything she knew how to do.

Over the 20 years she had been on earth she had for the most part forgotten about the fact that she didn't know who or exactly what she was, but this strange lady reminded her of this and she sort of wondered if this lady was the same as her.

"What's she doing?" She asked Jay, expecting him to know more than she did.

"She's undoing your doing." Jay notices a different look on the girls face, so he isn't as stern as he'd like to be. "She seems pretty strong, magic wise."

Choosing to ignore the comment, Mai crept over to get a better view. She wanted to see, but she didn't want Lorelei to know she was watching and do something different as a result, so she tried her best to remain hidden as she watched.

Once having analyzed the extent of the damage and spread of the fire, Lorelei was relieved to see it wouldn't take as much effort as she had first thought. She would make quick work of the situation, then.

Outstretching her hand, similar pinkish flame-orbs began to syphon out of the ground and swirl around her, as she chanted her spell. Her spell was really more of a command to these free spirits, and once she had finished, they swarmed like a storm of fairies toward the fire, and swirling around the blaze they left faint trails of energy, which seemed to smother the flames as more of the spiritual "dust" piled onto the burning woods

The sick feeling in his stomach subsiding, he picks up a stick and throws it for Zack. The dog wiggled as he picked it up and then unleashed in a ball of energy to retrieve his prize. He knew he had done good today. Jay bent down and ruffed his ears. The two played while waiting on the others to return.

Forgetting all about hiding Mai stepped out and walked up to Lorelei. "How did you do that?"

She stared at the smoldering remains of what had been a fire a moment earlier. "How come you can use magic Lorelei? Most people around here can't.....so you must be different....What are you?"

Lorelei looked at the girl, her eyes slowly returning to their normal state.

"What am I?" she asked, blinking. She had thought up to this point anyone could use magic - at least, magic capable of doing something like starting a forest fire - would be keenly aware of what she was.

"Maybe I should ask, what are you?"

Mai didn't seem terribly interested in answering Lorelei's question before Lorelei had answered her own. Lorelei stared at her quietly, thinking she might discern the answer for herself.

A magic user who didn't know one of the most basic tenants of the human magic society had to be either a super prodigy or something not of the human world. Lorelei decided that, with this girl, who seemed too... simple to wittingly hide her identity, it would be best to simply observe.

"I'm a witch." Lorelei said, at length, with a snobbish touch to her voice. "A True witch, mind. Not some high school goth-punk with a bookstore guide to Wicca."

Any true magician would know what she meant by claiming to be a True Witch, and her comparison to the family-attic parlor tricks most of the common society associated with witchcraft had nothing to do with the distinction. A "witch" and a "True Witch," there were only two distinguishing features between them that mattered. Would this girl know, or was she truly that ill-versed?

"Anyway, your question having been answered, let's get back to the dog fellow." she said, before whisking away back towards Jay

"A witch?" Mai pondered that for a moment, thinking over Lorelei's reversal of her question. "Maybe I'm some kind of witch..." she thought to herself.

"True witch? Isn't a witch a witch?" She asked, tilting her head to one side.

Jay notices everyone heading back his way and stands. "Thank you most kindly Ma'am." He sticks his hands in his pockets and leads them through the woods to...(see chapter 2)
