主な症状は、最初は気分の落ち込みと食欲の低下が見られる。その後、ウィンディゴに�� � ��り付かれたという思いが頭を占めるようになり、「このままではウィンディゴに変化してしま�� �」という強い恐怖と不安感と共に、次第に周りの人が食べ物に見える様になり、猛烈に人肉が食 べたくなる。病が進行すると、通常の食物を一切拒絶するようになり、会話や身だしなみなど生� ��に不可欠な能力を喪失する。最悪の場合は、部族から処刑される、若しくは、ウィンディゴに�� �全になる前に自殺してしまう事もある。身体的自覚症状は、体が内側から凍えるような感覚と、 めまぐるしい気分の変化がある。

主な原因は、アルゴンキアン族が飢餓に直面した時、人肉を 食べて、乗り切ったという悲劇的な経験がある事、冬季の食料の乏しい時には、ビタミンが不足� ��がちで、精神状態に変調が生じやすくなる等、栄養面での影響が大きい事なども考えられてい�� �。
