January 13th, 2005: I've put some new minimum growth requirements into effect. They're down under the information about the stages. Read, and be enlightened.
November 26th, 2005: I've been absolutely awful lately, lazy and everything, but those two bicoloured eggs are going on raffle on November 30th. It'll last... er. Let's say two weeks? Yeah. Okay. Let's get some new people in here, so Sunny isn't depressed. *snrk*
August 13, 2005: Can I hear a hallelujah, people? I've got the files back. Everything. Thank you, dudes at Computer Mail Order, best second-hand computer shop in town. In fact, I'm so freaking relieved that I'm going to hatch all the eggs, regardless of current RP amount--with one condition. PM me that you're still paying attention and that you'd like it to hatch, and I'll get on it ASAP.
August 7, 2005: Bad news, folks. The computer went boom Friday night. We think it was the power supply. Now we have a new computer. It is a nice computer. Unfortunately, I've lost all the images for the hatchlings. There's a possibility I'll get the data back. There's a possibility I won't. I don't know yet. If I lose it, I'll have to redraw everything. Your patience is appreciated.
Not like a lot of you people are RPing anyway...
July 26, 2005: Ecavi's Jasmine is now a child!
July 3, 2005: Two little girls have hatched tonight! Kem's egg and Deitsae's egg have both split. Names forthcoming... hopefully. :3
July 1, 2005: (Quiet. It's the 1st if I say it is.) In commemoration of the new thread, and for Canada Day for the next few days the limited edition Canuck Plushie will be available.
How much? Nothing. He's absolutely free. Just remember to save him to your own server because I'll be deleting it from mine in a few days.
June 30, 2005: The old thread just isn't coming back. So, we have a new one. Most of it wasn't backed up, so please excuse the dust while I rewrite everything from memory. A belated welcome to Jeanemon, Niko Torren, mouselet, and Arrikanez.

Rules (in no particular order)
1. Generally, what Sunny says, goes. She is lord here.
2. No whining or scare tactics or guilt tactics in flatsales or auctions.
3. RP is required for growth; however, I will not take away dragons or eggs except in extenuating circumstances.
4. These dragons are people, not pets.
5. No stealing or altering the art, except for use in sigs.
6. No godmoding in RP.
7. If there's some RP going on in the shop, use ((double parentheses)), [brackets], or whatever for OOC conversation.
8. Except in unusual circumstances, one dragon per person.
F.A.Q.
Q. How does adopting a dragon work, ICly?
A. Same as adopting a human baby. You fill out the forms, Sunny makes sure you're not going to be making an omelette with the baby, and she entrusts you with the egg.
Q. Will you RP with me?
A. Sure! I'm a total RP whore; feel free to flag me down for it whenever, and I'll do my best to be accomodating.

Quote:
I sing the song of the Lore of our people. Listen, my child, to a tale you have not heard, but will hear again.
Our people had lived peacefully in our own ways long before humanity appeared, but the war between us took its toll, neither of us backing down until it was far too late. We fought them; they fought us. We took refuge in the hills, and hid; they sought us out and killed us. We learned the art of shapeshifting, and they caught on and learned to watch for the imperfections.
We hid so long some of humanity doubted we were real, and we preferred this, but there were always enough who knew the truth, and fought us. There was a desparate attempt to breed, but she who is egg-heavy or curled around her unhatched children is vulnerable to attack, and we had had no success.
It was the High Elder of our tribe who found the doorway. He was Eldila Suivin, wise and powerful, familiar with magic, though he had been blind for many years. The doorway left the world we had been born to, the world we had lived in and died in and loved in and raised children for so long. The decision was not easily made, but we escaped Earth, our own world, and came to this one known as Gaia.
It was meant to have been simple. Some continued living in their humanoid shape, others in their true shape. We learned of other universes, even others known as Earth, in which dragons had never existed. A few of us settled and chose to have children.
We had come through the doorway, but we had not known how to close it behind us.
The families that had risen to fight us, the slayers, learned where we were and some followed us, intent upon a racial hatred that was felt on both sides. They found it impossible to return the way they had come, but they knew we were their enemy.
We were caught unawares, and suffered greatly. In the last formal council of the Tribe of Last Home, a decision was reached: we would live as human, as best as we could; we would have no children and risk our lives; the tribe would scatter over Gaia and live in secrecy.
All was well for some time until one young dragon, known as Bennali Sundragyn but living under the assumed name of Sunny, wished desperately to have a child, and exploited a loophole in the agreement: she bore a child who was half human.
News travels fast in the tribe. The reaction to this was mixed. Some were angry, some were frightened, and some were jealous.
As the child grew, it became clear that while Gaia was still dangerous, it was safer than it had been. Children could be born, fully dragon children who would, in some way, continue the species.
It is said that it is easier to move an old dragon's hoard than to move him to a new lair, and indeed, many desired the continuation of their race, but feared to raise the child themselves.
So it was that Bennali Sundragyn, she who had started the entire mess in the first place, who had always had a somewhat unhealthy fascination (as her tribal family thought, anyway) with humans, was given these instructions:
"We will not die. We will live, though not as we once were. Take the children of those who are afraid or unable to care for them, and find them homes. Find them human homes."
This is a song of our Lore. Remember.

In the alternate Earth that Sunny is from, a line of six-limbed saurians (that is to say, dinosaurs) arose long ago. From these came the dragons, a species that was sentient, omnivorous, warmblooded, scaled, and occassionally feathered.
They were inherently magical, too. Besides the breath weapons that many of them possessed, they have a shapeshifting ability that allows them to mimic the shape of creatures they spend a lot of time around. This means that these dragons, being raised among humans (or humanoids, anyway) will naturally attain a human shape.
Egg:

This is where it all starts. You'll get yours later in the gestational period, and if all goes well, it will likely hatch within a month, if not sooner. Traditional dragon belief is that the unborn hatchling is aware of its surroundings on a subconcious level. Keep it close to you, and have a supply of meat and vegetables ready--the baby'll likely be hungry when it hatches.
Roughly the size of a basketball.
Hatchling:

Dragons are born more alert than human children. A hatchling will be at about the level of a human toddler. They are in fact are born with some knowledge of their native tongue, due to the biological parents speaking to them in the egg. The draconic language sounds a little bit like birdsong as performed by an oboe, composed of chirps, warbles, trills, squeaks, etc. Dragons have a good ear for sounds and hatchlings instinctive imitators; they'll eventually start babbling in English. They are traditionally given one name and one name only.
Roughly the size of a small dog, or a three-year-old child.
Child:

Much like a human child. They'll be able to speak intelligently, and will show definite interests. An elemental affinity, if any, will start to manifest itself. They might also be learning to fly, if they have the right sort of wings.
Roughly the size of medium-to-large sized dog.
Adolescent:

By now, the dragon will have managed to find a humanoid shape, or at least the beginning of one. It takes practice and they might still be obviously not human. Much like a human teenager, they'll be interested in relationships, very likely. wink
In their true form, roughly a metre and a half at the shoulder.
Adult:
(No picture available)
(No picture available)
Before a dragon can be considered an adult, they must undertake and complete a namequest. When Sunny feels they are ready, she will approach them and tell them what they need to know. More on the namequest later. At this point, the dragon is free to live as either a human (like Sunny does) or as a dragon, and is no longer the responsibility of the centre, though if you kept RPing, it'd be nice. You get two pieces of art with this stage, one of their human shape and one of their dragon shape, and you can have either on the cert.
In their true form, roughly two metres at the shoulder.
GROWTH REQUESTS
When you feel ready for your dragon to hatch or grow, and you've achieved the minimum requirements as listed below, then feel free to PM me with a request. I'll get to it as soon as I can.
For growths for teens or adults, add any important information such as hairstyle, scars or tattoos or piercings, favourite accessories, clothing style... although if you have no preference, I'll enact artistic license. wink
Egg to Hatchling:
At least one week as an egg, and at least three entries in the log.
Hatchling to Child:
At least one month as a hatchling, and at least ten entries in the log since the last change.
Child to Adolescent:
At least two months as a child, and at least twenty entries in the log since the last change.
Adolescent to Adult:
At least two months as an adolescent, and at least twenty entries in the log since the last change, and a completed name quest.

Dragons classify themselves in two ways, by race and by colour.
Races:
Due to the natural shapeshifting ability of the dragons, a startling variety of traits are seen in a single species.

The African dragon lives in savannah or desert. They are solidly-built dragons, with small wings that only allow for short flights. However, they hardly need to be able to fly, since they're absolutely wonderful runners. They're generally spiky along their back and tail, and occassionally on their throat as well.

The American dragon is found mostly in South American, but a few populations have been found as far north as Canada. They are the only dragons to possess modern flight feathers on their wings, and they have curved horns. They're good in the air, with a fondness for acrobatics, but tend to dislike water.

The Asian dragon is found (guess) in Asia. They are generally very sleek of build, wonderful swimmers, and have a lot of stamina for long flights. However, they're rather awkward on the land. They also have whiskers, a mane, and tail tuft composed of protofeathers. Protofeathers are hairy, primitive feathers, the precursors of the modern flight feather. Emus and kiwis have protofeathers.

European dragons are very thick-skinned, have a row of bony plates along their spine, and a spade on their tail. They're average in the air, average swimmers, but they're built for life in mountain ranges at high altitudes. They can be found in valleys, too, but have a fondness for high places.

Oceanic dragons are amphibious, but adapted to live in the sea. They cannot fly at all, as their wings have been adapted to become fins. They have webbed feet, a webbed crest, webbed ears, and are usually hornless. Their tails tend to be very long, and have a large webbed fluke on the end. They're able to hold their breath for long periods of time.
(No picture necessary)
Mongrels are any dragon that is a mix of two or more races. Pretty much all of the dragons adopted out here will be mongrels.
Colours and Elements:
There are five spheres of colour.
Stone: White through black and all shades of grey in between. No elemental affinity.
Flame: Red and orange colours. Affinity for Fire.
Sun: Yellow and brown tones. Affinity for Air.
Sky: Blue and green tones. Affinity for Water.
Blossom: Shades of pink and purple. No elemental affinity.
Similarly, there are five elemental spheres.
Non Elemental: Exactly what it says. No breath weapon.
Fire: Able to breathe fire.
Air: Able to breathe lightning.
Water: Able to breathe a blast of frost.
Poison: Able to spit venom or breathe a cloud of venom. Pretty rare, with no colour having an affinity to it. (Auction or custom only)
Now, it isn't this simple. Sunny herself is a silver dragon (Stone colour) and breathes fire. Dragons may take after the element of either their colour, or of either parent.
Say you have a Flame-coloured dragon. One parent was Air elemental, and one was Poison. The dragon's element may turn out to be Fire, Air, or Poison.
A Sky-coloured dragon whose parents were Water and non-elemental could be either Water or non-elemental.
Dragon Mages:
In addition to all this, there are occassionally dragons born who are non-elemental but able to draw upon the magic inherent to species in a much more powerful way. They can study magic and become mages. They will never have a breath weapon, but they hardly need it. Traditionally, they rise to important roles in the Tribe.
They are extremely rare, generally only one being born in a generation, and sometimes not at all. There's a lot of loose magic in Gaia, though, so it might end up becoming more common. We shall have to see. (Auction ONLY, at some point in the future.)

This obviously isn't going to happen SOON, but... might as well have this ready.
Adults only, for one. Role-play needs to happen, for another. Dragons are generally pretty laissez-faire when it comes to mating; some are monogamous while others will never really settle down with just one person. Still, no one's going to just randomly breed with other random people.
At present, CoLH can only offer breeding support for male/female pairings; we're just not equipped to help gay or lesbian couples concieve, sorry. We are, however, willing to provide adoptive services (this can be treated as a custom slot) for a homosexual couple.
There will be 1-3 eggs, and the parents can choose to either care for them themselves, let them be adopted by a friend or relative, or let them go up for adoption in the shop.
More details will be made clear as this information becomes, y'know, necessary.

The name quest is one of the most ancient and important traditions. Upon birth, a dragon child is given one name, a birth name.
As they pass from adolescence into adulthood, they are instructed to go out into the world and travel until they earn a new name to give to themselves. While a birth name is given by your family and represents your link to them, the second name reflects how you see yourself.
Young dragons on quests may choose to either travel somewhere in particular, or wander aimlessly; they may go far away, or somewhere relatively near; it may be a long trip or a short one; they may travel as human or in their true form. The name can be a place that was significant during the quest, the name of someone influencial they met, a name given to them by someone influencial, a literal description of something. There are no rules, except one: they may not come home until they have given or found themselves this new name and are able to justify it to themselves.
What occurs on a name quest is a private thing, and no dragon would never dream of asking the details of another's quest unless they were very, very close.
Bennali Sundragyn was trained as a Singer in the old days, a verbal storyteller and historian of the Tribe, so she is well-equipped to deal with the youth who will have to do this. When Sunny feels that someone is old enough to go upon their name quest, she will approach them and explain to them the lore involved.

All dragons possess the ability to shapeshift, some better than others.
Shapeshifting is painful, starting out. As a dragon grows, their body becomes used to it. Also, the required size change from an adult dragon to a human body tends to numb the pain a little.
Very very very few can do it perfectly. Horns will almost always remain--Sunny tends to wear hats. Colouring stays, too, and is often one of the most obvious tells. Often, vestigial remains of wings or tails are visible, but can be easily hidden underneath loose clothing. Sunny herself still has all the bones of her wings even in her human shape, though they're under the skin; the effect is that her back is deformed. She wears a tail more out of choice than anything. Some dragons will retain a few scales, or perhaps wings and a tail, or full claws. It comes down mostly to experience.
((OOCly, this will be determined by your own RP. Adolescents will be imperfect, anyway; I'll ask you how human you'd like them to be when it comes to their adult shape.))
Shapeshifting is primarily an imitation of those around them, and is a difficult thing to control. In times of great stress, dragons in a human shape are known to instinctively start to revert to their natural shape, ie, they will sprout claws or a few scales to start out with.

"I sing the song of the Lore of our people. Listen, my child, to a tale you have not heard, but will hear again.
"There was a tribe of our people, once, who called themselves Last Talon. Last Talon was at war with another tribe, called Cloud on Water. Last Talon were a tribe of dragons of Earth, of claws and teeth, near-flightless but fiery. Cloud on Water were a tribe of the eastern dragons, awkward on land but at home in the air or the water, fire-less but dignified and dangerous when crossed. They had been at war for so long that none remember why they fought, but they fought for whatever reason they could gather.
"One had come too close to the tribal lands, and they fought. One had passed without noticing, and they fought. One was rumoured to be speaking ill of the other tribe, and they fought. They were bitter enemies. Many died, my child, and few children were born. All were told of the vicious enmity, and of the cruelty of their enemies.
"There came one of Last Talon called Mataerrhin Darkclaw, a female who was a great warrior of her tribe, and honoured for it. She was young, and of the age to be choosing a mate, but there were no eligible, unrelated males in her tribe. Mataerrhin left her tribe, promising to return with a mate, and they bid her goodbye and good luck.
"Mataerrhin searched long and far, until she met a young male in the same predicament as herself. The male was known as Rinmu Moonstone, and a scholar. They became acquainted, and mated soon after.
"It was only when Mataerrhin was egg-heavy that she thought to ask Rinmu his tribe, and was horrified to learn he was a Cloud on Water. Rinmu was equally horrified to learn she was Last Talon. Yet, they had spent several weeks together, and were friends and mates now.
"Not knowing what else to do, they visited their tribes, and were thrown out and denounced by both Cloud on Water and Last Talon. The two tribes each blamed the other for the loss of their children, and had one last battle; there were no survivors.
"Mataerrhin and Rinmu were saddened, but left to begin their own tribe, far away; they accepted all tribeless with open arms, and it grew, slowly at first, but was eventually a well-established and recognized tribe. There were dragons of all races who sought sanctuary with them. The children were raised with love.
"The tribe was named by Mataerrhin in her last days. She called it Last Home.
