Welcome to The Black Forest's Pet Shop! Although... ::looks down:: I have to admit we don't really sell pets here. I thought we did once, but we have learned that the creatures known as Koivu are sentient. They even have their own city hidden in the Black Forest!

Now the Black Forest Shop is more of a Foster Home. I still need help caring for the young, but adult Koivu take care of themselves usually. Please, look around and help us to rebuild the Koivu society!

...but I didn't tell you how it happened, did I? How the Koivu City was destroyed by an evil demon, minion of a vile master that is still out there, still trying to kill the Koivu? Let me explain it in the next post. And just a few more links you need to know to get around here....

User ImageA short summary of the plot is written below. But for a more exciting way to learn the plot, check out the Black Forest Snakes and Ladders Game!!

The story of the Koivu
In years long gone, a race of sentient fox-wolf creatures lived in harmony with the Black Forest. And yet, in every story there is tragedy, and that which befell the race of the Koivu was genocidal.

A raging demon killed off the reigning Celestial bodies, the anthros who watched and protected their race. The city fell, and nearly every adult Koivu was exterminated by the heartless demon.

Thetis, a paranoid youth, used her forest power of the shadows to avoid being killed, and gathered the homeless kits, left for dead by the demon. She was forced to ask a human, Nurse Trixie, to care for the kits, breaking the race's secrecy, which had been aggressively protected for countless millennia.

Trixie started a shop at her grandfather's farmhouse just south of Dürem, and helped Koivu and human alike to grow. After almost a year, it was obvious that the demon had found that the kits he had mysteriously spared were growing to adulthood, and he set out to kill once more. The demon succeeded in killing the human keeper, Holly, and the nin Koivu, Kiba, before being overwhelmed and killed by the shop's warriors. Those brave Koivu now have medals of valour to show their victory.

Although Holly was gone for good, Kiba somehow came back as an angel. But he was not the only winged creature that was seen after the demon's death. The three leaders of the Damphousse, the mortal enemies of the Koivu, appeared. They had an ancient treaty renewed, which prevented the two races from killing each other. Their reasoning is unknown, but it appears that the demon may have been a wingless Damphousse that somehow broke the treaty and killed many from both races.

After that, the Koivu prospered. They multiplied in numbers and returned to their destroyed and overgrown city. Relics of their past that were found turned out to be much more than trinkets. Some were talismans of past Celestials. Given the right conditions, they had the ability to transform Koivu into the anthro Celestial form.

Although the return of the Celestials gives the Koivu hope that their society can be rebuilt, fear still remains in the hearts of the elders. For in the demon's last breath, he uttered the phrase, "Master, I have failed you..."

Since then, the Koivu have contacted the spirit of a strong Celestial, Cujo, who is being controlled by the Master of the Demon. The Koivu know that she, whoever she is, is after the Celestials, and will be coming for them. Is battle near?

Soon, the forest creatures turn against the Koivu, attacking them viciously whenever the Koivu set foot in the Black Forest. Draconic, who was exploring the Ruins well into the night, was kidnapped by the Master, her clothes leaving an ominous arrow pointing Southeast....

The name of these pets is Koivu or Quivous (koy-voo). A single pet is a Koivu/Quivoux (koy-voo), but as this is difficult to pronounce without telepathy, one may simply call them poofs, as their youngest stage appears as a tiny poofball. A single pet is a poof.

Koivu are woodland creatures with the appearance of a fox/wolf hybrid. They lived in the Black Forest for countless ages without humans. However, a demon creature killed off much of their race, and a surviving Koivu, Thetis, begged Nurse Trixie to help to save them from extinction. Trixie set up shop to find caretakers for the Koivu kits, that somehow were not killed by the demon. Now that the demon is dead, they are beginning to repopulate and explore the forest.

Koivu communicate via telepathy. They enjoy the trees, and can climb even as a baby. They can swim, but enjoy rivers more than open water. They are omnivores, and feed on insects, fruit, and small mammals. Koivu do not eat birds.

Currently the creatures have at least seven stages: newborns, poofs, kits, younglings/youths, adults, elders, and anthros/Celestials. Angels are highly infrequent, but do exist, as well. It takes many weeks to months for a Koivu to grow from stage to stage. They grow with experience and the love shown by an active Gaian, not just because "it's been a while" since it has grown.

Stage 1:
User Image Koivu give live birth (see Breeding Section). Babies can walk as soon as they are born, but prefer to laze around with their mother.
Stage 2:
User Image Poofs are curious and love to play and explore. They are covered in a poofy layer of down fur, which they shed as they grow.
Stage 3:
User Image Kits begin to speak to others via telepathy. They have lost a bit of their poofy fur and begin to look more like foxes... but with a fuzzy mane.
Stage 4:
User Image Once Koivu are youths, they become more confident. Their bodies become visible from under their masses of fluffy hair.
Stage 5:
User Image Adult Koivu are incredibly brave and self-confident. They have grown claws and an agile body.
Stage 6a:
User Image Elders are the wisest of the Koivu, and have lived a healthy and exceptionally long life.

    If you are active for one year in the thread, you will have the option of having said Koivu growing free of charge. To get the growth, once your pet reaches a year in age, simply PM Nurse Trixie and ask her to grow your pet to the Elder stage. Please include their adult image in the PM.

    Elders can also develop from a long RP relationship (see RP thread>Experience), or from potions sold by Riftwing.
Stage 6b:
User Image Angels are exceedingly rare, owing to the fact that your pet has to die first to become one. eek Kiba and Damiana are our only angels so far, and Kiba died in the last battle against the Demon. ((See the Plot RP thread for further details))
Stage 7:
User Image Anthros, also known as Celestials, are the ruling elite of the ancient Koivu society. Each one is based off a heavenly body, which grants them power in addition to that of the forest. It is depicted through a talisman staff, which they carry at all times. When their body can be seen in the sky, the Celestials are at their most powerful state. A list of the current Celestials can be found at the guild. Koivu can grow into Celestials if they complete an RP quest to make a totem, or if you buy a potion and the Celestial art yourself.

A lot of places on Gaia nowadays are full of drama and disrespect. That makes me sad. This shop is drama-free, and many think of it as a family... A crazy, somewhat deranged family, some say.... but really we all have fun and enjoy each other's company. We welcome everyone, from veteran oldbies to new members with no RP experience whatsoever. We teach RP skills, spelling and grammar. And I'm proud to say that we've helped increase the school grades of many of our members through posting at this shop!

Another thing that upsets me is when people come here and say they'll care for a Koivu, and then disappear. I can't have you doing that. If you want a Koivu, you must, at the very least, post in the thread at least twice a week until your pet is fully grown. Failure to do so may result in me finding a better companion for your Koivu. I will, of course, send you a warning first. Just respect me, the Koivu, and the rest of the Gaians at this shop. That's all I ask.

User Image RP is highly encouraged for Koivu. Not only is there a plot for you and your Koivu to solve, but there are advantages to doing so. The weapons and armour you buy have attributes that help your pets in the RP. Also, experience gained can be used to grow your pet to another level! eek If you don't want to RP, you can also gain experience through journal entries.

User Image RP rules are the same of this thread, and the rules of Gaia.

User Image Journals are not required, but if you want one, it will be placed in the guild. To get RP points, you must report your posts to me via PM.

User Image There are many ways to RP. The two main ones are plot based and rando. Plot based requires you to follow the plot, as outlined on the first page of the RP thread. The random RP can be used for meeting other pets, training on the stumps, and just posting if you don't see it fitting into the plot RP. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR NEW OWNERS to begin in the rando RP, meet others, and begin in the plot RP once you understand the basics of the RP etiquette for the Koivu. Other RP threads may be made in the guild.

Although the poofs are not RP-mandatory pets, there is a plot for those to RP.

User Image Q: How many can I own? User Image
You may own as many as you can RP. If you don't RP, a maximum of 10 pets will be allowed. However, if you have over 10 and don't RP most of them, the pets that are neglected will be rehomed.

I would say it's a skulk, since they are more like foxes than wolves...
but a pack is also acceptable.

User Image Q: When do the poofs get their telepathic powers? User Image
Koivu begin their lives as small, quivering balls of fluff. These poofs (also called kitlings), can convey simple emotions and feelings. The kit stage is similar to a toddler, and speech is broken but understandable. As a youth, they can begin to speak in sentences. Adults are fluent, and can also project images into another's mind. If you RP them, you can also gain experience which will give them defensive and psychic attack skills, such as the ability to speak privately to others, and to speak over large distances (~2km).

First off, I don't resell pets that are full grown. They are simply retired.
If yours is still a youngling, you may post here and let me know. It WILL NOT grow until you come back to the shop. Alternatively, if you know you'll never be able to post here and want it to grow, I suggest you use a growth potion to bump them to their mature stage.

User Image Q:: What do I get when I order a Cosplay? User Image
All cosplays come with the first four (4) stages. You will have to pay more if you want it to grow to any other stages. If you want a one stage perma-pet, it is half price. They come with any items that are in the costume, but if you want a familiar, you will have to buy that custom separately. Cosplays can also breed, but it will cost a bit more.

Sure. Just PM your request to Nurse Trixie. Be sure to say what stage(s) you want.

User Image Q: How do I start to RP? User Image
Since we have a long-standing plot, you may find it hard to integrate in. But don't worry! All of the owners will help you to meet other pets and get into the RP. Please post your questions, and they will be answered. I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR NEW OWNERS to begin in the rando RP, meet others, and begin in the plot RP once you understand the basics of the RP etiquette for the Koivu.

A tricky question. Yes, you may. Please provide pictures, and do NOT involve them in the plot or any explorations of the forest. That's for TBF pets only. Other pets should only be playmates.

Getting a Koivu here is different than other Breedables Shops. There are few flatsales at this shop anymore. Mostly, we just sell custom-made pets, so if you want a pet, please purchase a custom as listed below.

User ImageA Regular Custom is 25k, and includes all stages your pet can grow to (with the Celestial credit as well).
User ImageCosplays are 75k for four stages. The price of fewer stages is Negotiable. Also, for cosplays you will have to pay extra for an elder or Celestial stage.

User Image New owners have the choice of purchasing their first custom Koivu for 10k. However:
- - - Only very simple patterns are allowed.
- - - If the Koivu becomes Celestial, you will have to pay the full price for the Celestial art.

To get one, please post the order form and PM it to Nurse Trixie, and then start the trade with her. No work will be done without an active trade.

These creatures are in need of breeding pairs. Their population has dwindled, and any addition would help. However, they must be adults to breed. Typically, poofs have 2-4 kits in a litter.

Breeding for Koivu is closed! Cost for a breeding pair is 10k (20k for 1 cosplay mate, 50k if both are cosplays), and the price can be split between the parents-to be. Parents must decide how to split the kits up. They can be kept, given to a friend, or sold through Nurse Trixie, with profits returned to the parents.

This shop has partnered with G-Corp scientists to allow same-sex breeding! All the scientists need is a sample of the parents' DNA, and they'll be able to create some kits in the lab! One warning: possible side effects have been known to occur in the past at G-labs, but Trixie has faith in them.

If you get a spot, please fill out the following application and roll a 6 sided dice. For same sex breeding, the result is the dice number shown. For heterosexual breeding, the result will show how many kits you have:
1-2: 2 kits
3-5: 3 kits
6: 4 kits

User Image Please send a trade for the breeding to Riftwing. Once the fee is paid in full, your pets will get together. For heterosexual breeding, the female will, of course, get pregnant! Homosexual breeding will simply recieve the kits as they are developed enough to leave the lab, but for heterosexual couples, after a RL week or so, something happens! A parent MUST report to the thread or RP for the kits to be born:

After that, it will take a week or two for the kits to grow and be old enough to be separated from their mother. At that point, they may be distributed to new owners ^^

Should you wish to keep them young forever, I have developed a potion that can keep your poof in their current stage indefinitely.

A counter potion has also been developed, should your pet wish to mature after I took the stasis potion.
If you did not use the statis potion, but wish your pet to grow rapidly, it will cost 1k.

I discovered a potion that, with a few drops to the eyes, can change your pet's eye colour without any adverse effects. It's very similar to contact lenses, really.

Accidentally, I found a potion that, if painted on fur, will remain permanently. If done right, you can have a custom pattern, similar to a tattoo, painted onto your pet.

You may purchase a familiar for 1000g. Simply select the familiar from the list above and choose two colors for it to be, then PM the form to Riftwing, and start the trade with him. Patterns/markings cost an additional 250g. Familiars may also be found through RP or special events. The familiar owner's list may be found in the Black Forest Guild!

Familiar Types:
    Slug - The slug is a slow moving Earth type. They can cling to any surface. Slug familiars can communicate only with their type.

    Sea - The sea familiar is a seal/dragon hybrid. They are slow moving on land in their first stage, and prefer to swim in the rivers and lakes of the forest. The second stage reveals its ability to levitate, although it may be a bit shaky at times. They can communicate with snakes as well as other Sea familiars.

    Air - The butterfly is the first stage of the Air familiar. It can only communicate with other Air familiars. In its second stage, it metamorphoses into a faerie body. They can speak to anyone now, by speaking the way humans do. They have high, faint voices, though.

    FoxSquirrel - These are also Earth type. They can communicate only with other Fox Squirrels.

    Earth - The Earth familiar starts as a giraffe-ish creature, unable to speak to anything but other Earths like it. In its second stage, it begins to be able to communicate telepathically with the Koivu, but prefers to only talk to those it has a special bond with.

You cannot order the second stage of a familiar. Its growth stages are only available through RP. At least three growth stages for all the basic familiars exist, even though they may not have been discovered yet. So don't let previews be your deciding factor when selecting a familiar.
