Welcome to Dorg's Styling Thread
(1st RULE: You do not talk about DORG'S THREAD)
    MISSION STATEMENT:
    The purpose of this thread is to give various types of tips and hints to creating an outfit for your avatar, the discussion about what standards does make a good avatar (if there truely is any way to summerize that information), and lastly you can ask me personally for advice on your avatar.

    Please understand that this thread is my opinion and I will make generalizations about people to best prove my point. If you want you are free to politely give your input about my thread via post or private message, you can even fill out a survey I have in post 13. I will read and consider all input.

Tips and Advice for getting Your Style down,
and Generic Advice


  • Well before you want to start buying items wasting that precious gold away you have to think about what type of avatar you are.

    • Avatar Changer: You always find yourself torn between which basic appearence choices you want for the day, or the next 10 minutes. You most likely will want everything on Gaia with every color and style. You should get items in groups such as this 'hat', these 'gloves', and these 'shoes' which go together to best help you create outfits.
      (2nd RULE: You DO NOT talk about DORG'S THREAD)
    • Avatar Shifter: You do tend to change your style from time to time but you probably always revert back to one specific look/combination of items. And any transitional changes in your style happen slowly. Try to isolate what your favorite looks are to keep yourself centered.

    • Avatar Perfectionist: You know what you like and what you don't like. The problem is you may find things not quite right with your avatar and change things that other people might not have ever noticed. You should take extra care to look through Gaia's selection to best satisfy you.


  • Next you should take your time to browse the selection of items available on Gaia and be sure you know how to attain every type of item.
    Use Search It! Gaia Items Database (SIGID) to easially browse through most available GaiaOnline items with location and price info.


  • ALWAYS preview items before you buy them from the stores. Sometimes the picture icon lies...terribly...so always preview the item. Or it may effect the look you are going for. Plus it will waste your gold.

  • You also might have a desire to create or emulate a certain theme or look for your avatar. Such as a cos-play. In order to find items on Gaia that most resemble the look you are trying to achive use a search engine to find several reference pictures. Or you maybe be able to visit the homepage of the look you want to achive.

Knowing the Common Types of Styles out there

This post allows you to see what types of styles most avatars probably fit into. Just because these styles have been put into separate categories does not mean they are all separate of each other. Many styles can overlap within one avatar, and people can change styles at a whim.

However when considering your own avatar or giving advice to another avatar you should try and consider what style the avatar has or was trying to achive. The goals between styles can be very different so keep an open mind to ALL types of fashion.

But please don't feel you are limited to what I have posted, or feel that you should fit into any category. The most important thing in your avatar is that you like it.

Matching
The idea with matching is using as many colors as you like and spreading those colors throughout your avatar in three main areas, the head, the upper body, and the lower body. Attention to detail is also vital because a minor spot of color within an item must also be matched in another part of the body, preferably far away from the inital placement of that color.

Natural and Realistic
Whether you are a human avatar or some sort of animal avatar the point of your outfit and avatar is to verisimilitude that style into your Gaia Avatar as much as possible. Clothing should be visually functional, something a person or animal would wear during a normal day in their life. Animal avatars can also use items to hide the initial human appearance of their avatar if they wish.

Clutter
Clutter avatars can use either few or many items to create the true or illusion of complexity for their outfit. Avatars using many items can try and visually ultilize all the equipable slots in an avatar. Avatars using a relatively few items must take advantage of how items overlap with each other and how much complexity they can create using that layering.

Simple
Simple avatars can use either few or many items as long as they create an overall simple look for the avatar. Clothing detail can be mostly plain with very little detail. Although if used any detailed clothing should not interupt the simple effect of the outfit. A successful overall visual effect of simplicty is justication for this style.

Powerclash
The art of mixing a plethora of colors, patterns, or textures, and making it work. Applying different contrastins colors in a sublime way that tantilizes the senses. Creatvity is in and convential ways of what color go together are out. Intense and powerful effects from the avatar and outfit justify this style choice.

Contrast
Using two or more shades, hues, or colors that conflict each other. This is not limited to pairing a dark color with a light color, such as black and white. But such pairings do not have to be exact opposites. Where the difference in the items meet and inhance each other on the avatar justify the style.

Monotone
Using the potential one color has to offer. The same shade in each item is not required for these avatars, and the occasional interuption of another color may not be helped at times, as long as the focus of the avatar is that one color used. How that one color was used throughout the avatar is the justification for this style.

Cosplay
Avatar is based around an already exsisting character, items used to dress avatar are based around the outfits the character would wear. The choice of item can come from exsisting pictures of the character, from written descriptions if no picture is availible, and can even be an educated guess to what character would wear and like to wear.

Theme or Statement
The theme and statement behind the avatar is most important. The message should be most apparent in the look of the avatar.

Sensual
Using as many items as the perons deems neccisary to make a sensual and seductive effect for the avatar. Under garments and bathing suits as well other skin tight and reveling clothing can create a sensual effect.

Item Combination Ideas to Help You Match and Coordinate Your Outfit
(3rd RULE: No sleep till Brooklyn)
    I think a lot of people get stuck on what to do with an outfit because they have trouble keeping track on how to place items on their avatar that coordinate well.
    (4th RULE: Only guys get two necklaces)
    What I have tried to do is create a cheat sheet of combinations you can use to help you make your outfit. This list is favorable to store items since those are the most available to every user. This list also favors my idea to have the basic design of your outfit to be shirt, pants, and shoes.

    To best use this list you should already have a partial outfit constructed, or you have a specific item in mind you want to use and need to solve the problem of coordinating it in size, color, shade, theme, etc.


    • Head Item Equips/Appearence:

From the previous post Dorg Endo shared many example of how to combine items within your avatar. This post will help you in that regard with splendid visual examples of this coordination in work.

Coordinating items isn't just about the color, it is also about the size and theme each item has. Balancing those concepts as well any other an item may challange you with can help you make your avatar.

Also look at the size of the items used. She has a very large amount of items on her head, so balance the size of the items the tail and shoes play into that role as well. Color coordination to this detail may not be for everyone, but try and take note of the balance of item sizes which can apply to a wider variety of avatar styles.

Notice how the hair is almost completely hidden because of the head items he is wearing. If you have a Salon Hairstyle and do not wish to waste your money by deleting your avatar you can try and disguise your hair...assuming you do not feel like seeing your hair style on a certain day. The same thing can apply to eye color, use glasses and other face equips to disguise your eyes if you do not feel like seeing your eyes at some point in time.

Take a look at the simular Theme between many of the items used. The horns, holdable, tail, gloves, and shoes are all evil themed. These items of simular theme from head to toe help create a solid overall look for her avatar.

The use of color within colored items is a good example to matching and attention to detail. The hints of white within the shirt, gloves, socks, and shoes compliment the only pure white item, the headband. Using small details can make a big statement for your avatar.

Mini-Essays for the AT from Dorg Endo

In this post I plan to keep and update my opinion in mini-essays concerning AT and avatar fashion in general. In order to keep this post short and clean I will archive old essays into a journel entry of my journel [Journel Entry Archeive LINK].

You are free to post or PM me any comments you feel like sharing any feedback with me on my opinions and point of view. I do ask that if you choose to reply please be specific to which part, and which one if not current, of my mini-essay(s) that you are replying about.
    Avatar Appearence should not be used to judge the person behind the avatar 12-02-05
    Ever since I joined Gaia the problem with people making assumptions about another person because of their avatar has been a nuasance. Before you begin to think of your innocence think of the times you have been treated unfairly in some way because of your avatar's appearence. That wasn't fun was it? Now how about when your Gaia friend told about a time they were treated unfairly. That probably pissed you off too. And more likely then not you are guilty of the same crimes of prejudgice against other Gaia users because of their appearence.

    Luckially there are ways you can combat your own faults when you find yourself making assumptions about a person because of their avatar. You only need three questions. First you must ask yourself what is it about said avatar that causes you to have judgements and make assumptions. Pinpointing your problem is a small but crutial step. Next you need to ask yourself why that bothers you. Finding out why may require you to try and remember the first time you know you felt this way, making an assumption against someone because of their avatar, knowing this will help you with the final step. Finally you need to ask yourself how you can stop your own prejudgice from being a problem. This could be the hardest step for you. But if you find some way to look past your own assumptions you will be a better person for it.

    So in summery you need to know what is causing avatar prejudgice, why this is (root of the problem), and how to solve your dilemna.

    I can relate to this to my own expierences on Gaia. Personally I don't like every Gaia item, and I doubt anyone does, so every now and then I find myself having negative thoughts about a person. For instance I can't help but find myself thinking very often "Another fox avatar? Ugh..." which isn't fair to the user who likes such items. What my problem is are the fox items. When I ask myself why I feel this way everything stems to my expierences offline with dogs. I dislike dogs highly because they have never been a positive expierence in my life. So how to solve the problem...well my own expierences differ from everyone else's. Many people have had very positive expierences with dogs so they like them very much. Variety is the spice of life and the admins try their best to create a variety of animal items. That is what I try to remember when I see a fox avatar or anyone with dog items on here on Gaia.

    So try to spread fairness to your fellow Gaians by thinking what, why and how you really feel about someone's avatar before judging them as a person.
