As you've probably realized, this will be a long post. Wherefore, you ask? Why, because... there are SIX different elements being sold here, and each begs their own description.
Basically, all Gods and Goddesses start from gems, varying depending on the element which influences them. The females ONLY come from Dark Gems, Water Gems, and Wind Gems; the males ONLY come from Light Gems, Fire Gems, and Earth Gems. They have basic telepathic powers at this stage-- they can communicate, but not much more.
From the Gems emerge Chibi Gods and Goddesses. Basically, they are equivalent to a human pre-teen. They might notice there are different genders, but there are only light crushes, no deep love involved. At this stage, they tend to experiment with their powers-- most of the time they don't succeed in doing what they wanted.
Finally, the Gods and Goddesses are fully grown and have perfect mastery over their powers-- well, not quite perfect, but getting there. This is also when they start finding their life-mates-- see "one plus one equals..."
There are also what are known as "Guardians"... no one's quite sure about them...

The Guardians
000Every type God and Goddess in the world realized they couldn't afford to always be alone. Even the Hermits, the Earth Gods, couldn't live alone for too long before trouble struck. So the Gods and Goddesses came together and created charms they could carry if they so chose. These charms would call creatures to them-- Guardians.
000While not every God or Goddess finds the need to have a Guardian, most find it helpful in their everyday lives. Only Guardians of the same gender seem to be called to the Gods and Goddesses, although no one is quite sure why yet...
