What are boggles, you wonder? Where do they come from? Boggles are a form of the boggart, a Scottish imp that tends to be attached to people or places. Castle Morag, a mouldering ruin of a castle that is crumbling slowly into the sea on one of the high Scottish islands, seems to be a focus for boggles, and all of my wisps come from there. House boggles are mischeivous and usually cheerful things that like to play pranks, but there are tales of more virtuous and sinister types of boggles about. I have yet to come upon them, but as I live in Northern England now I make frequent trips up into the highlands to investigate. Oh, excuse me, I haven't introduced myself. My name is Perri, and I am an aspiring historian and archaeologist trapped in a school teacher's body. Ah well. My house boggle, Asher, keeps me on my toes quite enough as it so I probably don't really need any more excitement. Would you like to learn more, and perhaps take one of these beasties off my hands?

There are five known types of boggles: pure, guardian, house, impish, and corrupt. The Pure and Corrupt types are so rare no one alive has ever seen them, and we only know about their possible existence through myth. Guardian and impish are also infrequently seen, but they have been known to be seen and captured in wisp form once in a while. House boggles are the most common type, and we have the most information on them.
All boggles go through three stages of manifestation.
...House boggles...
Common, unaligned, shapeshifting
House boggles, or "boggarts" as they are known in Scotland, are human-orientend house spirits. They generally attach themselves to a specific place and interact with the people within. They are varied in their temperments, having no expressly good or evil intents. Even when cheerful, they are mischief-makers by nature and all play small pranks, such as moving house keys, on their humans. When encouraged to imprint on the appearance of a person, or thing(s), they will alter their shape to mimic the real thing they are given.
...Guardian/Impish boggles...
Rare, benevolent/malevolent, static
Guardian and impish boggles are human-oriented spirits. They attach themselves to specific people, with the aim to either help or hinder them. Guardian boggles make an effort to help their humans, and so tend to have a more "angelic" appearance. Impish boggles try to hinder and sometimes hurt their humans, so they tend towards a more "demonic" appearance. They are not able to shapeshift easily like house boggles can - once they have reached their fully-manifested form they cannot change. They are able to manifest in either a "dreamy" or "nightmarish" form that they learn from their human, however.
...Pure/Corrupt boggles...
Mythical, good/evil, extremely shapeshifting
Whether Pure and Corrupt boggles actually exist or not is a matter of debate. If they do, they are extremely powerful creatures - the first of all boggles. They do not attach themselves to people or places, although they may be convinced to allow a human to attach to them. They are either good or evil, and have very strong personalities. As for appearance, they are excellent shapeshifters, often taking a half animal or elemental form. All other information about them is unknown.
-Gender-
All boggles are innately genderless, although house boggles do usually imprint a gender when they enter their fully-manifested stage. All other boggles are genderless.
-Breeding-
Boggles "breed" by mixing pieces of themselves to create new wisps.
House boggles can only breed when they have imprinted a gender, but after that they can breed as many times as they want with as many different house boggles as they want. When they breed, they pass on eye color and some of their base and/or imprinted traits. House boggles cannot breed with any other type of boggle.
Guardian and Impish boggles can breed without a gender, but they can only breed with either guardian or impish boggles. Also, since they are tied to their blood stones, they can only breed twice in their life times, each time giving up a quarter of their stone. If they breed more than twice, they will die and may not produce offspring with the final breeding. They only pass on their base traits, not any of their possible "dreamy" or "nightmarish" ones.
Not enought is known about Pure and Corrupt boggles at this time to say if they can breed or not.
House Boggles go through three main stages: wisp, ghost, and the fully manifested boggle. All house boggles will go through these three stages, with or without rp.
1st Stage: Wisp
The first stage of a house boggle is called the "wisp" stage. As boggles are immortal creatures they cannot die, but they can and do fade into a wisp - a pale colored bit of smoke that has almost no form. The only thing that remains solid about a boggle is its eyes, which are well-formed and able to convey expression. A boggles eyes never, ever change. They are always the same color.

My house boggle, Asher, demonstrates his wisp stage.
Don't worry about Asher up there, not all house boggle wisps are that grumpy. There are four major temperments of house boggles: growly, ambivalent, cheerful, and confused.

Ah, explanatory line art!
2nd Stage: Ghost
All house boggles take different amounts of time to reach the second stage, although they will all get there. Generally, the more time a human spends with them (i.e. rp), the faster they become a ghost. The ghost stage is when a boggle is re-learning to mimic human form. They begin to have a much more humanoid and distinct shape, but it is still on the smoky and rough side of things. Boggle ghosts also begin to learn color mimicry, and will try to change their base wisp color into whatever color they have been given to imprint on. More about imprinting can be found below.

Here we can see Asher's ghost stage. Note that his eyes and expression have not changed from his wisp stage. Remember, a boggle's eye color never changes. His temperment, and therefore his expression, may change in the third stage, but it remains constant from the first to the second. Each of the four temperments has its own pose for the ghost stage, but I'm going to leave some suspense and not give you anymore line art peeks for now.
3rd Stage: Fully-Manifested Boggle
Here we are, the last stage of the house boggle! Again, interaction between the boggle and its human (again, rp) will most likely cause the boggle to reach this stage faster. It will also effect imprinting, but there are multiple ways to cause a boggle to imprint. The fully-manifested boggle is still a floating, semi-solid creature as it was as a ghost, but now it looks much more human. Boggles have no gender, but through imprinting can be taught to affect one on a basic level. As always, the boggles eyes are the same, but the expression and temperment may have changed. And this is by no means its final appearance.

My darling Asher! As you can see his temperment has changed a bit - I have won him over from crabby into scheming against me. I'm not entirely sure that's a good thing, but hey. Again, there are four different temperments and line arts - although more may be discovered later. When your boggle first manifests fully, it will be wearing "peasant clothes" unless you have chosen something else for it to imprint on. These are just a basic clothing type that will keep the boggle from being "naked," not that it really has anything to show. Boggles that have been imprinted as male may or may not wear shirts; those imprinted as female may go shirtless only if their chest is covered by their arms in their pose (like in Asher's). Boggles are sexless even when imprinted, but I still don't want to draw boggle boobies. Why is Asher's hair that color and style? Because it's his base color and style. All boggles have a "base" 3rd stage that I pick randomly. After that, you get to customize through imprinting.
What is imprinting?
As boggles are only semi-formed and often very permeable beasties, they will change their shape for you if you can convince them to. I call this process of boggle redesign "imprinting," since boggles require a real object to mimic. Imprinting can be done two ways: through rp or by buying your boggle things to imprint on. Rping doesn't cost any gold and earns you points at the Imprint Depot that can be used instead of gaia gold, but it does take an investment of time on your part. Buying objects at the Imprint Depot doesn't take any time at all, but does cost gaia gold. It's completely up to you which route you use to change the appearance of your boggle - the only difference in them is what you give to get a changed boggle. They will take the same amount of time to happen and have the same result.
If you choose to rp, your boggle will imprint on your avatar's appearance first. If you'd like, you may play a different character for the "caretaker" role instead of your avvy and have your boggle imprint on that. I will have to have a picture of said other character so your boggle can learn what to mimic, of course, and if they're really, really hard for me to draw than I may ask you to simplify your quest. I can do most things, though. If at any time you would like to change your boggle's appearance, you may rp that happening OR go to the Imprint Depot and purchase an object. Remember, you earn points at the depot that can be traded in lieu of gold to get objects, through rp.
If don't want to rp but want to customize your boggle's appearance, there's the Imprinting Depot. Most things there, like paint, wigs, clothes, and accessories are pretty cheap and easy to mix and match. Let's use Asher to give some examples of what you can do with various items to imprint your boggle.
Remember his base form? Well, if I bought some blue paint for Asher, he would imprint on the paint and look like this:

Maybe I like his skin color, but think he could use a different hair color. I go buy a little brown hair dye instead of the paint, and Asher will imprint this way:

I could of course buy both the paint and the hair dye, but since I didn't make an example of that you'll have to imagine what Asher would look like for yourselves. Is that all you can do at the Depot? Certainly not! I could buy Asher a wig the same color as his hair, as well as a new outfit. A little imprinting, and voila!

Isn't he cute? And yes, Asher is still a "he" even though he's in a skirt and has pigtails. Gender imprinting is different from appearance imprinting, and will be discussed later. Feel free to mix and match Depot purchases over time to make your boggle as entertaining as possible. You can always revert your boggle to its base 3rd form, whole or partially, for a very small fee. All changes do cost a bit of gold, since a physical object is required to enduce the change in your boggle. It will cost less to go back to something your boggle had before, though, than it did to buy it the first time.

Asher all modified, colors, outfit, and hair. He's going to kill me.
Advanced imprinting: gender and temperment
Gender:
Every house boggle is automatically imprinted to a gender once they reach the 3rd stage. This can be done by rp or by simply replying to a pm I send you with the gender you would like your boggle to be. Gender imprinting is free, and not required unless you would like your boggle to breed. A boggle's gender doesn't affect its appearance in any way: boy boggles can wear dresses and girl boggles can wear pants. Any boggle can have whatever hairstyle its imprinted on. All it affects is whether or not it can breed: same sex boggles can breed, different sex boggles can breed, but asexual boggles cannot. Any boggle can mate, though.
While each boggle gets a gender if you want them to have one for free at the 3rd stage, changing a boggle's gender takes some doing. A change in a boggle's gender is: a. male to female, b. female to male, c. genderless to male or female, male or female to genderless. This will either require some serious rp OR a very pricey visit to the depot. Altering a boggle's imprinted gender requires infusing it with some of a remnant boggle's wisp, which is rare and hard to find, so it doesn't happen often. Since the gender of your boggle doesn't really affect anything outside of breeding (and their character in rp, I suppose), I'm assuming few people will want to do this. But hey, I answered the question just in case.
Temperment:
A house boggle's temperment in its 3rd stage is random. They are not the same as the temperments of the other two stages, and although they may be guided by rp or the purchase of a yellow face sticker at the Depot, your boggle may still end up having a different temperment than you hoped for. While very changeable, Boggles are sentient creatures, and they remain indiviuals even when molded. Being a nice person and talking to me once in a while may help your cause, but for the most part it's a toss up. I'm using a randomizer to choose temperments first and foremost, but I may override them due to rp or a polite Depot request.
A boggle can never change temperment. Temperment is a large part of their personality and who they are, which isn't something that's going to change any time soon. Temperment, like eye color, is unchangeable.
What about cosplay?
Can boggles cosplay? Yes. There are two ways to do this: imprint your boggle the usual way into looking like an approximation of a character, or win a cosplay doll in a contest. If you win a cosplay doll, you will get unique and/or edited line art for your boggle's 3rd stage, and the character they're cosplaying as will be their base 3rd stage form. Cosplay dolls can only be used on wisp stage boggles, and you can either choose to imprint a wisp you already have on a doll or get a new wisp from Castle Morag (that's where all the wisps come from). If you choose to imprint a wisp you already have, their eye color won't change but all other aspects will. New wisps from the castle will have an eye color of your choosing.
Contests for dolls are random and varied - some will be auctions, others raffles. Maybe an rp contest? Perhaps a scavenger hunt? Rhyming game? Crossword? All sorts of random things. But remember, there is only one cosplay doll of each character.

There are five known types of boggles: pure, guardian, house, impish, and corrupt.

Hello, and welcome to the depot!
This is where you can buy lots of items for your house boggle to imprint on and so change their appearance. Right now, it's just a list of basic stuff and prices, but I'll get icons up pretty quickly. When you buy something for you boggle, an icon of it will go on their cert. Only the things their currently imprinted on (or in the case of 1st and 2nd stage boggles, will be imprinting on) will be pictured on their cert. Remember, if you want to have your boggle revert back to a look they had before, you will have to repurchase the item, but for less than the original cost, and hey, the costs are low in general. Both gaia gold and rp credits, kept track of at the Bank of Boggle, will be accepted.
Note: When it comes to clothing and hair styles, I shall try my hand at anything and have a pretty decent success rate. Just bring along a picture from somewhere for me to work from, and I shall do what I can.

Ah, the Birds and the Bees! Well, the boggles and the wisps, in any case. So just how do boggles breed? Well, first a few rules:
1. Both boggles concerned must be in their third stage.
2. Each breeding nook costs 1k, and there's usually two wisps per breeding for House boggles.
3. I need permission of both boggle keepers to breed them!
4. Impressed traits can be passed on, but are less likely to be than original traits.
5. It doesn't matter what gender the boggle pair is - males can breed with males, females can breed with females (these are magical creatures after all). Only genderless boggles can't breed.
Now that that's over, let's look at each type of boggle:
...House Boggles...
1. House boggles can only breed with other house boggles, or in theory, with Pure/Corrupt boggles.
2. House boggles can breed as many times as they want.
3. While genderless house boggles can't breed, it's possible they may be able to merge with a Guardian/Impish boggle and create a stone. Still just a theory, although it is definite that only genderless house boggles could do this.
...Guardian and Impish Boggles...
1. Guardian/Impish boggles can only breed with other Guardian/Impish boggles, or in theory, with Pure/Corrupt boggles.
2. Guardian/Impish boggles can only breed twice without dying.
3. Only one wisp stone is produced per breeding.
...Pure and Corrupt Boggles...
No information.

Welcome to the Bank of Boggle! This is where the "gold" points, called "bp" or "boggle points," that can be earned through rp and used at the Depot instead of Gaia Gold are kept track of. Every keeper that rps will have their own account that can be found here. All purchases against the accounts will be recorded, and everything will be much easier for me to keep track of.
How does it work? Look below under your name. All earning of bp through rp or event participation will be marked in green, with the amount and date. All withdrawls or spending of points will be marked in red, with amount and date. Sound good?

Just Might Be Asked Questions
Since this answer list is anticipatory and all. wink Feel free to point out stuff I haven't covered and get me to put in on here.
Q. How much are boggles?
A. You can find this answer in the "availability" post above, but I assumed people would look for it here, too.:
~2k for a house boggle, no matter how it's sold, unless an event specifically says otherwise.
~All other boggle types haved yet to be priced - but when they're available for sale they will be.
Q. How do I get one?
A. See the availability post above, it'll tell you everything.
Q. How many can I own?
A. As many as you'd like. Seriously, feel free to collect them. If they become wildly popular do to some random fluke, I may hold more "newbie" sales and contest, but you'll always be able to have as many as you want to buy.
Q. Do I have to rp them?
A. Nope! You can rp if you want, and it makes them a bit cheaper to customize, but you don't have to. And besides, customizing through the depot is pretty cheap. Rp or not, it's completely up to you.
Q. Can they breed?
A. Yes. Go see the breeding post above for the details.
Q. I don't like the color of my cert! Will you change it?
A. For now, yes, but I may have cert color indicate generation or type at a later date, so that could change. But yeah, I'll tweak the color for you. Just ask.
Q. Can I get my boggle a nose/humanish ears?
A. Nope, no noses. Once I get better at it snouts and muzzles may be a possibility for those who want more animalistic boggles, but as a rule boggles don't have noses. A design thing on my part. The same goes with human-type ears... but that you may be able to talk me into on a case-by-case basis. I think they look funny with them, though.
Q. Can I choose any of my boggle's base traits?
A. No. You can influence them through either rp or depot purchases, but in the end they're up to me and my trusty randomizer. I will try to make you happy, though.
