Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world and is the faith of over four-fifths of the diverse peoples of the vast sub-continent of India, of the peoples of Nepal and Bali (Indonesia) and of millions of Indians who have migrated overseas. There are, besides, many ancient cultures, as in South-East Asia, which have been greatly influenced by the Hindu cultural ethos.
The history of the Hindus, as we know it today, goes back 5000 years, but Hindus believe that their religion is without beginning or end and is a continuous process even preceding the existence of our earth and the many other worlds beyond. Science today accepts that there may be other worlds in the vast Universe, each with its own laws. Hindus have held this view from time immemorial.
The word Hindu is of geographic origin and was derived from the name originally given to the people settled on the River Sindhu. It was corrupted by foreign visitors to the word 'Hindu' and the faith of the Hindus was given the name 'Hinduism' in the English language. Scholars however call this the Brahminical faith, for, as we shall show later, to attain the Brahman or the Universal Soul is the ultimate aim of all Hindu thought.
Philosophic thinkers of recent times do not like to describe Hinduism as a mere religion as they feel that this narrows it down and does not bring out adequately its great qualities of catholicity of outlook and free thinking, as even an atheist is not precluded from being a Hindu and no hell nor doomsday envisioned for the agnostic. It is therefore called Sanantana Dharma or the Eternal Religion. Others call it a fellowship of religions from its liberal absorption of the faiths of others.
The greatness of Hinduism is at once its complexity and its simplicity, and the fact that it permeates totally the life of every Hindu from the moment of his birth, be he a believer or non-believer, a scholar or an illiterate. It is for this reason that it is often said that Hinduism is not just a religion but a way of life.
It is important to realize, before we delve further, that Hinduism is a rare faith with few do's and don'ts postulated, but one which has many signposts showing the different spiritual paths available to different types of people. It accepts the reality that there are varying intellectual and spiritual levels in each one of us and all cannot therefore take the same path, although the goal may be the same. Hinduism therefore offers different approaches to persons of different aptitudes, depending on whether he be a philosopher or a poet, a mystic or a man of action, an intellectual or a poet, a mystic or a man of action an intellectual or a simple man of faith. This is a unique feature of the religion as it permits the greatest freedom of worship and insists that each person must be guided by his or her own individual spiritual experience. It does not accept dictatorship in religious guidance.
This study is not a comprehensive one nor the final word on the subject. It is hoped that it will whet the appetite of the readers to go to the originals and study for themselves the truths of one of the great religions of the world. Equally important, I hope it will serve as a short introduction to the foreign visitor before he or she finds more comprehensive studies on a subject which is as brilliant as the sunrises of our great land, whose scriptures are as poetic as its sunsets and whose faith is as tolerant as the gentle smile of this beautiful earth which has always cherished and welcomed the visitor, sending him back the wiser for his visit, even while partaking of the wisdom that he brings with him to our shores.

Akshaya is a member of the Kshatriya Caste in the Hindu religion. This caste includes the warriors, soliders, and rulers. Their traditional role is to defend the society from invaders and robbers, and they are expected to be both brave and high-minded. The Kshatriyas must study the ancient Hindu scriptures under the guidance of a Brahman teacher and are expected to follow many of the same rules of purity that the Brahman class follow.
Kshatriya are part of the upper levels of the Caste system. They are part of a section called the twice born. This has nothing to do with reincarnation. Being "twice born" means that you come of age religiously, making you a member of the Vedic religion, eligible to learn Sanskrit, study the Vedas, and perform Vedic rituals. The "second birth" is thus like Confirmation or a Bar Mitzvah. According to the Laws of Manu (whose requirements may not always be observed in modern life), boys are "born again" at specific ages: 8 for Brahmins; 11 for Ksatriyas; and 12 for Vaishyas. A thread is bestowed at the coming of age to be worn around the waist as the symbol of being twice born. However, for girls the coming of age is marriage. The bestowal of the thread is part of the wedding ceremony.
According to the Laws of Manu, when the twice born come of age, they enter into the four Ashramas or "stages of life."

The first is the brahmacarya, or the stage of the student. For boys, the student is supposed to go live with a teacher (guru), who is a Brahmin, to learn about Sanskrit, the Vedas, rituals, etc. The dharma of a student includes being obedient, respectful, celibate, and non-violent. "The teacher is God." For girls, the stage of studenthood coincides with that of the householder, and the husband stands in the place of the teacher. Since the boys are supposed to be celibate while students, Gandhi used the term brahmacari to mean the celibate practitioner that he thought made the best Satyagrahi (non-violent activist).
The second stage is the garhastya, or the stage of the householder, which is taken far more seriously in Hinduism than in Jainism or Buddhism and is usually regarded as mandatory, like studenthood, although debate continued over the centuries whether or not this stage could be skipped in favor of a later one. This is the stage where the principal dharma of the person is performed, whether as priest, warrior, etc., or for women mainly as wife and mother. Arjuna's duty to fight the battle in the Bhagavad Gita comes from his status as a householder. Besides specific duties, there are general duties that pay off the "three debts": (1) a debt to the ancestors that is discharged by marrying and having children; (2) a debt to the gods that is discharged by the household rituals and sacrifices; and (3) a debt to the teacher that is discharged by appropriately teaching one's wife, children, and, for Brahmins, other students. The three debts are sometimes associated with the three Gods of the Trimurti -- the ancestor debt with Brahma, the gods debt with Visnu, and the teacher debt with Shiva.
The third stage is the vanaprastya, or the stage of the forest dweller. This may be entered into optionally if (ideally) one's hair has become gray, one's skin wrinkled, and grandchildren exist to carry on the family. Husbands and wives may leave their affairs and possessions with their children and retire together to the forest as hermits. This does not involve the complete renunciation of the world, for husbands and wives can still have sex (once a month), and a sacred fire still should be kept and minimal rituals performed. This stage is thus not entirely free of dharma. The Forest Treatises were supposed to have been written by or for forest dwellers, who have mostly renounced the world and have begun to consider liberation. I am not aware that forest dwelling is still practiced in the traditional way. The modern alternatives seem to consist of the more stark opposition between householding and becoming a wandering ascetic.
The fourth stage is the sannyasa, or the stage of the wandering ascetic, the sannyasin (or sadhu). If a man desires, he may continue on to this stage, but his wife will need to return home; traditionally she cannot stay alone as a forest dweller or wander the highways as an ascetic. The sannyasin has renounced the world completely, is regarded as dead by his family (the funeral is held), and is finally beyond all dharma and caste. When a sannyasin enters a Hindu temple, he is not a worshiper but one of the objects of worship. Not even the gods are sannyasins (they are householders), and so this is where in Hinduism, as in Jainism and Buddhism, it is possible for human beings to be spiritually superior to the gods. It has long been a matter of dispute in Hinduism whether one need really fulfill the requirements of the Laws of Manu (gray hair, etc.) to renounce the world. The Mahabharata says that Brahmins may go directly to Renunciation, but it also says that the three debts must be paid -- and the debt to the ancestors could only be paid with husbands and wives living together as Forest Dwellers (indeed, the Pandavas are all born in that way). There are definitely no such requirements in Jainism or Buddhism. The Buddha left his family right after his wife had a baby, which would put him in the middle of his dharma as a householder. Buddhism and Jainism thus developed monastic institutions, with monks and nuns, but these did not really develop as such in Hinduism.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v35/penofdl/Gaia/kuatalmot/Shakti.gif" align="right">Shakti is the divine force, manifesting to destroy demonic forces and restore balance. Every God in Hinduism has his Shakti and without that energy they have no power. Lakshmi is the energy of Vishnu. Parvati is energy of Shiva. Shakti is also called Devi or mahadevi, assuming different roles as Sati, Parvati, Durga and Kali.
So Shakti is the mother goddess, the source of all, the universal principle of energy, power or creativity. The worship of Shakti as this energy is the main objective of Tantra Yoga. Shakti is inseparable from the one who beholds her, the Shakti-man, the masculine principle or Universal father. Shakti-man is called Brahman by the writers of the Upanishads. In the Tantric tradition he is called Shiva.
The play of female energy has no beginning and no end. Although it is restless, the energy moves through alternating periods of motion and rest, during which order is re-established. Tantra believes that as long as the phenomenal world exists, it is the Universal mother who is the creator, preserver and destroyer. Thus Shakti should be worshipped as an aspect of the divine.
The motivating force behind this eternal play that creates the illusionary world of phenomena is the power of desire. This desire is present in the one who is without attributes, the nameless and formless aspect of the divine.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v35/penofdl/Gaia/kuatalmot/BRASS0004NATR.jpg" align="left">Shiva is the destroyer of the world, following Brahma the creator and Vishnu the preserver, after which Brahma again creates the world and so on. Shiva is responsible for change both in the form of death and destruction and in the positive sense of the shedding of old habits. In Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram or Truth, Goodness and Beauty, Shiva also represents the most essential goodness.
Shiva is the god of the yogis, self-controlled and celibate, while at the same time a lover of his spouse (shakti). Shiva's first wife was Sati and his second wife was Parvati, also known as Uma, Gauri, Durga, Kali and Shakti. His sons are Ganesha and Kartikeya. Shiva lives on Mount Kailasa in the Himalayas.
Shiva's main attributes are the trident that represents the three gunas and the snakes that show he is beyond the power of death and poison and also stand for the Kundalini energy. The vehicle of Shiva is the white bull called Nandi (the joyful). He is often seated on a tiger skin or wears a tiger skin, with the tiger representing the mind.
Shiva has many forms, which are visible in his Panchavaktra form with 5 heads, a combination of all Shiva energies : Aghora (resides in the creamation grounds), Ishana (most often appears as the shivalingam), Tat Purusha (meditating), Varna Deva (the eternal Shiva) and Saddyojat or Braddha Rudra (the old wrathful form). The last also forms the connection to the Rudraksha mala - a rosary made of the dried fruits of the Rudraksha tree.
Shiva Nataraj's dance represents both the destruction and the creation of the universe and reveals the cycles of death, birth and rebirth. His Dance of Bliss is for the welfare of the world. In the pose of Nataraj, the King of Dance is giving darshan to his beloved devotees within the "Hall of Consciousness", which is the heart of man. Under his feet, Shiva crushes the demon of ignorance called Apasmara Purusha, caused by forgetfulness. One hand is stretched across his chest and points towards the uplifted foot, indicating the release from earthly bondage of the devotee. The fire represents the final destruction of creation, but the dance of the Nataraj is also an act of creation, which arouses dormant energies and scatters the ashes of the universe in a pattern that will be the design of the ensuing creation.
Shiva is conceived in his unborn, invisible form as the Lingam. It is always accompagnied by the Yoni, which is the female principle, surrounding the base of the Lingam. The Lingam represents the male creative energy of Shiva.
When Ganga incarnated on Earth, Shiva captured her in his hair to avoid that she would flood all of Earth.
Shiav worshippers are among India's most ascetic yogis, their body smeared with ashes, dressed in saffron colors and wearing a Rudraksha mala.

With a boundless memory for idioms, axioms and quotes he could be mistaken for a bookish intellectual, but he's less than conventional, and loves to mix comedians with historical figures when making arguments. While he would rather avoid a confrontation he will not shy away from them if unavoidable and is known to be quite vicious when it comes to either verbal arguments or physical concentration.

Name: Kira L. Pendell
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Irish
Origin: Martinsburg, WV
Current Location: An Apartment in Durem
Family:
{Husband} Trollax J. Kinora
{Kuat. Daughter} Akshaya
Pet: -----
Likes: Cats, Large Dogs, Books, Computers, Movies, Writing, Theatre, and Friends
Dislikes: Snakes, 'Rat' Dogs, Heights, Socialization, and Yelling
Vital Stats:
Hair Color:
{Original} Brownish-Red
{Dyed} Black
Eye Color: Blue
Skin Color: Porcelain White
Height: 5'2"
Weight: 167
Basic Appearance: Kira avoids the sun as much as possible so her skin is a soft milky white in color. Her hair was originally a soft brownish-red, but she dyed it a deep black when she had her last hair cut. She dresses mainly in blacks and reds. Her outfits are slim and curve fitting, but they also keep her well covered.
Basic Personality: Kira is a sweet and motherly individual. She'll fuss over the people she loves, and she'll worry her head off if she thinks something has happened. She is also a good listener, and she'll stay with you for as long as you need if you have a problem. But she has her breaking point, too, as well as a temper. It seldom gets triggered, but when it does....watch out.

Eye Color: Deep Brown
Skin Color: Porcelain White

Basic Appearance: Trollax is tall and nondescript, and despite protests to the contrary he enjoys his untameable long hair. His shaggy beard is often present, primarily because shaving irritates his skin. He prefers to wear plain colours and if there are to be designs he will usually put them on himself.
Basic Personality: Trollax is a laid-back and quiet person, he would much prefer to wait than hurry and would rather be late than a very stressed on-time. He is not known for avoiding work, but once he settles down it can look as though nothing is actually occurring.
