Charon's personality, although he is just a baby, is already showing in just the few hours that we have been together. When I first picked him up, he wasn't frightened, just shy. I explained to him, unsure if he understood, that I was his mother now. He seemed to accept that.

June 24, 2004
I thought I was prepared, but from the second my hand touched his soft fur, I was in love. He looked like he was going to cry just from the forced meeting. I whispered to him that he shouldn't worry. At such a young age I can't tell whether he knows what I'm saying, yet that doesn't stop me from talking to him, all the time. It's not that he doesn't like people. Well, maybe it is. I act like I know him so well already. I'm being silly. I hope we'll get to know him more as he grows up.
My house isn't far from the adoption center, so I held Charon the whole time as we walked. I suppose it should be, "as I walked." I continued speaking softly to him about how I'd love it if he'd be my friend, I hope he likes the house, et cetera. For the time being, Char will stay in my room with me. I don't want to leave him alone his first night here. At the moment I'm working on decorating his room. Of course, I have got to be careful to maintain the proper amount of masculinity in its design. As a girl myself, I tend to go a bit overboard. Just look at the banner I made him.

While Charon slept in this morning, I finished his room. The walls are a lovely shade of blue, slightly darker than the sky outside. A thick plush rug covers the wooden floor. There's a full-sized bed for when he gets older, and I plan on putting his crib next to it for the time being-once he gets out of it, of course! He also has a little desk and a chest full of toys. I can already tell I'm going to spoil him like mad. I suppose I'd better try to cut back a little bit, or all the other Bunnixes are going to hate him!
I'm especially worried about this as today is Charon's first day at the nursery. I wish he could just stay with me since we've only been together two days, but I can't be quite so overprotective. Thankfully the little dear has opened up to me quite quickly. I think he just needs some love to get over his shyness. Already he responds when I ask him questions. Well, he nods or shakes his head at least. Supposedly the baby Bunnixes can communicate with each other, so I hope this will be the case.

I'm pleasantly surprised that Charon seemed to enjoy nursery school. He actually appeared almost eager to go back today! My baby also liked his room. I offered him a few posters to put up, and he chose one of a big tree. I thought it was one of the oddest ones in the batch (the rest were airplanes, trains, cars... little boy stuff like that), but it does look quite becoming to the small space.
And of course, how could I forget the most important moment of his childhood thus far? (In my opinion, of course.) This morning as we were eating breakfast, he pointed at me and clearly said, "Fwee!" True, some might dismiss it as a nonsensical baby sound, but somehow I feel sure that he knows it's my nickname.

Another new word today. At least, I think it was a word. My Charon gave his teddy to me for holding, and as he did, he announced, "Nappla!" followed by "Fwee!" I do think it was some sort of introduction. Apparently the bear is named Nappla. Alright, so it's not really a word, per se, but it was a definite and purposeful name! He's learning so fast! Surely every parent thinks their child is the most intelligent thing to walk the planet thus far, but I really do think Charon is smart. Maybe that's why he seems to be so shy; he's caught up in his Einstein-like thoughts.
Well, a mother can dream, can't she?
Anyway, I can hardly bear to leave him alone at the nursery today, in case he talks some more and I miss it. Yet I suppose there he simply speaks in baby-Bunnix.

Today I thought it would be fun if I taught Charon how to use watercolors. Now, I'm hardly an expert myself, but it was fun nonetheless. And just look at the lovely picture he made!

It's Charon, Nappla, and the tree from the poster in his room. At least, I'm assuming it's that tree. I suppose this is Charon all grown up since he's nearly as tall as the tree. Maybe I should tell him that he probably won't be blue when he's older.
I tried to explain to him how to shade, but it was a waste of breath. However, little Charon did have fun as he learned how to mix colors. (The top of the tree has about 10 layers of paint on it! The paper almost broke but luckily I stopped him in time.)
I also taught him how to write his name! He can say it, too. Charon certainly enjoyed using the Sharpie marker. Next time I should probably make him use non-toxic washable markers. Really, what was I thinking? But I didn't want the eyes in the picture to blur.
I guess now it's time for a bath. Watercolors are washable, right? Charon is looking some interesting shades of green at the moment.

Any day now I suspect Charon will start stringing his words into full sentences! Yesterday he said to me, "Cookie please?" And when I obliged, the little dear cried out, "Sankies!" Ah! So polite, I almost gave him another cookie. But then I remembered that I'm not supposed to spoil him. Oh, self control, a wonderful and terrible thing to have around children.

For some reason today I thought it would be a good idea to take Charon to the botanical gardens. Yes, yes, kids like zoos. But I figured since he liked trees so much, it might be fun. He seemed to enjoy it. I tried to teach him how to read the names of some trees but I don't think he quite got it. He recognizes the word Charon though!
Also at the gardens I got him to repeat "oak, maple, birch, pine" after me. It's not unhealthy to like plants, really.

Getting Charon ready for the nursery this morning was a mess. He was unusually loud and obnoxious, running around the kitchen. He yelled and shouted and refused to eat his toast. He kept saying I was 'it!' What does that mean? I practically had to tie him up and carry him the whole way there. Remind me to keep him away from cookies now.

Charon was out like a light last night. I heard from some of the other bunnixes' parents that all the little ones are involved in an ongoing game of "tag" at the nursury. That would explain the "you it!" that I kept getting yesterday. I guess it really tired him out! But I'm so glad that he has some friends.
In fact, as we were eating dinner, he kept babbling about "Soleee." I think that means Soleil, who is my friend Aijou's sweet little bunnix! It seems that Charon is overcoming his shyness already. He actually acted rather smitten with Soleil. Ah, puppy love.

Charon informed me of a fight at the nursery today. However, he got a gift from Chiaku's bunnix, Mio!

How cute! He's wearing it on his foot. I should have fun trying to convince him to take a bath.
Yesterday we went to see a small firework spectacle. I think Charon was a little bit frightened, but soon he got used to it and shouted "Boom!" every time the pyrotechnics lit up the sky.

Today I took Charon to the zoo in an attempt to get him to like animals as much as he likes plants. He was rather fond of the giraffes and asked me, "Can we sit on it?" Alas, I had to explain to him that most giraffes are not trained for riding.
I do think it's a brilliant idea, though!
I also bought Charon a postcard. He'll need help lettering it, although I wonder who it's going to.

Today's project with little Charon was making that postcard. And guess who he wanted to send it to? Soleil! He refused to let me write it for him with him dictating, so I basically had to show him how to write every word. I really just wrote it on another piece of paper and he copied it. I don't think the letters were supposed to go like that, but Charon insisted! Here's the postcard before I take him to Aijou's to deliver it.

I do think he has a crush on her!

No word yet on how Soleil felt about the...shall we say, interesting gift. The latest craze at day care is hide and go seek, or so I hear from my little spy! Naturally, Nappla and I had to endure many turns of both hiding and seeking to satiate Charon. He also didn't seem to remember the spots he had already hidden in. Sometimes I even did too good of a job of hiding Nappla; it took him over 30 minutes to find her sitting on top of the washing machine! It was then that my patience ran out and I suggested we take a walk instead.
Meanwhile, Charon's speech continues to improve. I'm still trying to teach him basic grammar and pronounciation, but he makes himself clear enough.
Tomorrow I think I might bake cookies with him, or some equally menial cooking task. Just because he's a boy doesn't mean he can't pull his weight around the kitchen, haha!
