Hello and Welcome to the Island of Dr. Moreau Threadaversay event! The Island of Dr. Moreau main thread is officially one year old as of August 1st - and in that time period we have racked up 14,000 pages! !

In celebration of this event we will be giving out THREE serums through contests (one design contest, and two concept contests - read on for more information). There will not be an auction for the month of August.

So what's up with this Threadaversary?

Like we said, there will be three parts to this threadaverasry - three separate contests:

Design Contest
Newbie Concept and RP Contest
Oldbie Concept Contest

Duration: These contests have two different endates. They both begin August 1st.
The Concept Contests End August 15 (11:59pm Pacific). Closed
The DESIGN Contest Ends SEPTEMBER 17th (11:59pm Pacific).

Although, it very well may take us some time to judge! So be patient for results heart

Entry Fee: It is Free to enter the Design contest. It costs 1k to enter a concept contest (sent to this mule, Island of Moreau)

Who can enter: Anyone can enter the design contest. Only people without a serum can enter the newbie concept contest, and only people already WITH a serum can enter the 'oldbie' concept contest. Therefore, anyone may enter both the design contest and whichever concept contest they are eligible for.

Types of Serums Available:
For the design contest, we will be flexible on the type of base serum that will be granted, but it will be subject to approval like any other character coming onto the island. However, any add-ons will still need to be purchased as normal.

For the concept contest, as long as your quest thread has been established before July 31st, we will allow whatever serum you are gunning for. ((Subject to approval and as long as they follow the few character creation rules)). If you do not have a quest thread, or if you make one after July 31st, then you can get any normal anthropomorpic animal serum.

What is a Concept Contest
A concept contest is where you develop a character concept, filling out the specifics in the entry form below, and you will be judged based on the interestingness of your concept. While your desired animal might be funny or ironic, please focus on the human aspect of the character - remember, in-character, your character would not be choosing their own animal. We understand that some concepts can be ironic or appropriate due to the animal that they choose, but we are looking for characters that are distinctive, yet believable, as humans. Remember, rounded characters have flaws AND things that make them unique! Every person has strengths and weaknesses.

Artists: Birvan will be doing the artwork for both of the concept contest winners. Bilious will be doing the artwork for the design contest winner.

Contest 1: The Design Contest

ENDS: September 17th
To Enter: Post in THIS THREAD
NEW: You MAY enter more than one idea/ enter more than once into the design contest. However, each entry must be a full submission "packet" (see below for minimum requirements for design entries) and each entry must be a separate post.

The first contest that we are running in the treadaversary is to design a new look for the main IoDM thread, found HERE

TO ENTER:
To submit an entry, you need to at least complete:

The main banner for the shop - Old Title Banner
A sample of a secondary banner for the front page of the shop (one of the posts after the first) - example of old shop banner
If these are going to look different from eachother, give us at least an example of one, and tell us what your plans are for the rest
A banner for an RP area in the guild (if different from main thread banners). Old RP Area banner Likewise, if you want to have some look different from the rest, let us know.
Guild Banners: (A main banner ((For the intro page for the guild)) for the RP guild, the Quester guild, and the guild minibanners for the main guild and the quester guild ((The banners that appear in a person's guild listing)))
A Link Banner, in a few, sig-friendly sizes for the Links Section
a new editable certificate Old Cert

Please Submit your FULL entry in ONE post

You do Not need to submit all of the subheading banners when you enter, especially if they are going to be based off of the same template. However, if you win, you will be expected to send them all in a timely manner before you get your appointment.

Specific Instructions
We are interested in the cert having thumbnails of all of the stages for image-mapping to show the previous stages. While not an ABSOLUTE requirement, this is definately going to be something we're looking for, and if you want to win and don't have that feature, you will have to really blow us away otherwise.

You do NOT need need to do the imagemapping, however. This is something that we will do.

What Artwork you may use
Any art done by current listed STAFF artists (not guest artists). This includes appointments and fan artwork done by any of the staff artists, any of the (few) location artwork on display in the RP areas, any art by your own creation.

All original photoshop files will be required to be sent if you win, and will will be allowed to edit, modify, or make more banners in that format.

(The notes in parenthesis are not to be on the banner, just information for you of what that post will entail for consideration for the design of the banner, if applicable.)

Prompt A

You just washed ashore on the beach a strange island. Before you is a thick, tropical jungle, and in the distance you can barely make out the outline of a laboratory complex built into the side of a mountain. You have no idea if the lab is functional or not from the distance, however. Nearby, there is a small, vacant beach bar with several bottles of alcohol behind the counter. However, as you approach you notice a sickly-sweet smell. Lying on the sands is the body of wild boar, obviously mauled to death by a VERY large animal. How do you react? What do you think?

Prompt B

You're on the helicopter ride onto the Island, the large pilot James has been quiet through most of the journey and you begin to see the tropical island on the edge of the horizon. However, before you reach it, the man beside you has a rare moment of conscience and tells you everything about the island - what's in store for you. He says that he can't take you back for the sake of his family, but couldn't bring yet another person to their unwitting doom. There is a white-haired man waiting by a company jeep at the edge of the helipad as you're about to touch down. What do you do?

You are allowed to God-Mod James or Sabin for the purposes of this prompt

Prompt C

You awaken and only remember the barest of moments of what you were doing before you woke up. You've woken up in an unfamiliar room, it looks like some kind of examination room, you notice one side of the room is a clear strong plastic. Behind the plastic is a red-headed man, Dr. Nicholas Moreau, but his face looks age-worn, and there are streaks of grey in his firey mane. You've seen pictures of him on the cover of some business magazines, he's the owner of Feral Labs, a major pharmaceuticals company. He speaks to you for a moment, taunting you, but not giving anything away of what's in store. A gas begins to filter into the room from the vents above, a gas that acts as an unstable fast acting transformation serum. As you begin to change, and Moreau watches. Describe the transformation and your reaction.

The Contest: Part 3: For Pre-Existing Owners

As this is the one-year anniversary, we wanted to provide a new, unique opportunity. Before this, we have never had a flatsale opportunity where people who already own a serum could procure another one. This is your chance to get another Island of Dr. Moreau character if you already have one on the island.
Because we don't want a situation where people who have a serum are competing with newbies, this is a certain situation that doesn't take away a chance from newbies.

So! Have fun~! Since as an existing Islander we already know how you RP, you don't have an RP prompt - so it's just based on concepts smile

Rules and FAQ

RULES

It costs 1000 gold to enter a concept contest. (send to Island of Moreau)
It is FREE to enter the design contest.
If you win, you will not be required to pay any more for the Serum.
Payment must be sent before you post your entry.
Keep to Gaia TOS (PG-13).
Do Not Post anything EXCEPT for entries in this thread. Questions can be asked in the main thread.
Do not edit your post once you have posted it. We will not go back and read them after we've read them once.
For the concept contests, All writing must be your own work - do not have a friend critique your entry.
No Fan/copyright characters. You MAY adapt your existing original characters (or yourself), but keep in mind that this is a real-world setting. There are no jedi, no Hogwarts, no Magic.
NO MULES. You may only enter a concept contest ONCE). If you are caught entering a category multiple times, you will be disqualified and/or your serum suspended.
NEW HOWEVER, you MAY enter more than one idea (design packet) into the design contest. However, if you are entering more than once, use separate posts per entry. Keep in mind that there will only be ONE winner for this contests, as we can only really have one design for the thread/cert ^_~
While there is not set length limit, Please keep your entry concise and pertinent. If you have pages and pages of background information, save it for your journal if you get your appointment. If we get bored while reading your entry, we may stop reading. We don't want you to write a novel, but we do want to allow you space to write what you think we need to know.
If you win a concept contest, it must be for YOU (specifically, the character you entered with). You may not give it to a friend. If you enter two categories, and win with one of them, you can't 'switch'.
HOWEVER, if you win the design contest, you MAY elect to gift your appointment to someone else. You may not SELL the serum to anyone, however.
You may not commission anyone to enter the design contest - if a friend wants to enter on your behalf, great, but no gold, etc may change hands to get them to enter.
Design contest winner's character will still be subject to approval/tweaking just like any new IoDM Character.
This is not going to be judged BASED on spelling/grammar. But, if it is written very poorly, we will not take it very seriously, and judging will reflect on that.
Even if you win, you might be requested to minorly tweak something that doesn't jive completely with the canon plotline (such as method of arrival to the island).

FAQ

Q:Can I involve one of the NPCs (Moreau, Aubrey, etc) in my backstory?
A: Yes, but make sure to research their stories. Please understand that we have detailed backgrounds for these stories even if they are not posted. SO, if you decide to write a character that is involved with an NPC'S past, and you win, we might need to help you tweak the backstory around what we have already establised for the NPCs. And don't hesitate to ask questions.

Q:Can I involve one of the other islanders in my backstory?
A: That is up to the character's player smile

And to kick off celebrations...

All of us staff would like to congradulate Desna for her incredible dedication to the thread. She was one of our very first questers, and has been continuously active, optimistic, and willing to help. Not only has she shown up to compete in every competition that we have had, but she is a good presence in the thread, always encouraging when people have gotten their appointments, and has maintained and done a wonderful job with the Inquisitor.

We would like to, in celebration of the year anniversary of the thread, gift her with Lucas, her quest Island of Dr. Moreau character, with artwork by Sajhiri.
