What is a Fairy Tale?

A fairy tale is a story featuring folkloric characters such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, giants, and others. The fairy tale is a sub-class of the folktale. What am I looking for?
The objective of this contest is for you to create an original piece of art based on a Fairy Tale. That's it! You can choose any story, by any author, from any time period in history. It doesn't matter what the picture is of as long as it represents the story. If it's a story that is not listed in the links above, or is not obviously a fairy tale Ask Me Before You Start Your Entry. It really sucks to tell people that I can't accept their picture because the story they picked wasn't a fairy tale, so make sure you ask!

Info about Entering
You may enter as many times as you wish; however, if you submit something that does not fit the criteria, you may not enter again. They must be completely original works of art, and anyone found plagarizing will be reported. You must fill out the submission form below, or your entry will not be reviewed. You must fill out all of the information requested. You must host your entries for the duration of the contest or they will be disqualified. Please submit everything together, i.e. don't post your unfinished example before you finish. It will just end up confusing me. The contest will take as many submission as we recieve, there is no limit.

Imporant Dates
The contest will officially open and begin accepting entries at noon on March 10th 2006.
Entries will be accepted until noon on June 15th 2006.
Winners will be announced on June 18th 2006, time of day not yet determined.

Information about Dreamcatchers Contests
This is the second art contest held by my charity, and the first went extremely well with over 60 entries total. This is going to be the longest contest that I have held, simply because the prizes are astronomically higher, and I'm really hoping for a lot of interest. These events are held to help questors and provide a creative outlet for willing Gaians. I'm a little apprehensive about giving up my favorite, and most expensive item, but it's for posterity and they're only pixels after all. I hope that this contest provides you with inspiration, entertainment, and a worth-while creative outlet.

Information on the Judging Process
Your entry will be reviewed on the five following points .
1. Visual Appeal
2. Originality
3. Technical Difficulty
4. Time Spent
5. Interpretation
Finalists will be choosen who examplify all of these qualities. Only one entry per Gaian will be eligible for finalist status. These will recieve a small thank you gift, and then Takakun and I will choose the winners from these entries.

I'm interested in just a handful of people to do a quick round of judging. there are so many great entries it's getting difficult. If you entered a picture you can not judge. Please just post in the thread saying you are interested. I will PM you if I want you.

1. What is an unfinished example and why do I need it?
This is a picture of your entry before it has been completed. I do this in order to make it difficult for people to plagarize. Since the art contests I host have wide themes, instead of OC or Avi art, I need a little insurance from entrants that it is being created by them and for this contest. Screen shots work great, as do scans and photos.You must have this in order to enter. No exceptions will be made.

2. Are ALL forms of art accepted?
All medium used to create picture art: Yes
Sculpture: Yes
Photography: No
Flash animations: Yes, but I worry that this is quite an endeavor for an art contest.
Avi edits or dolls: No
Manga: Yes
Ask about anything else and I'll let you know.

3. Can we make up out own Fairy Tale?
No. I thought about it before making this contest, but I decided against it. This is strictly an art contest, and if you submitted something that you had written, I would be too inclined to judge you on the writing as well. I am a very harsh writing critic, and this would put you at a disadvantage, so please stick with already existing tales.

4. What is a excerpt from the story?
I would like you to submit either a link to the fairy tales text, or a portion of the original story, in your submission form for a few reasons. 1) I may not know the fairy tale that you are using. 2) I may not know which version of the tale you are using. 3) I would like to know exactly what part/idea in the story inspired your art. You may choose to include a brief interpretation of the story along with this excerpt.You must have this in order to enter. No exceptions will be made.

5. Do the submissions have to be based upon original fairy tales, or can they be based upon retellings?
Yes you can use an updated version of a Fairy Tale, just let me know the name of the original, the name of the remake, and the authors.

6.On Disney and Original Characters:
Can I make a suggestion to everyone? Try to stay away from Disney copyright characters. Not the actually fairy tale that Disney portrayed, but try not to use their art style. One of the biggest things that Takakun and I look for is originality, and using someone elses character idea will score you very low in that category.
