What is a Myth or Mythology?

What is Artificial Mythology?

Such fictional worlds are expansive creations with well-ordered histories, geographies, and laws of nature. Some build upon many aspects of the real world, while others are almost entirely invented. Artificial mythology is like an imagined world of any other work of science-fiction or fantasy in basic features shown in a simple narrative but is similar to a typical mythological system in scope and detail.

What I'm looking for
The objective of this contest is for you to create an original short story in the style of an ancient myth. If you read this entire page, it will give you some helpful hints about what exactly is meant by a myth and what might be included in your work. Let me stress original, do not attempt to rewrite an existing myth. My minor in college is Classical Greek Mythology, so needless to say I'll know if you plagarize something. Only two entries per Gaian will be accepted.

Length of Entries
I would like entries to be between 500 and 3000 words, nothing shorter than 500 words will be accepted. I will stop accepting longer works, if it seems that too many are entered. Longer is not necessarly better, and I would prefer a polished story over something that drags on and on.

What is NOT acceptable
* Shothand, net speak, poor spelling and/or grammer, and any form of n00bish.
* Content above a pg-13 rating. This includes extreme graphic violence and
mature sexual content. Violence is fine as long as it's not overtly descriptive.
* Anything else that would violate Gaia's TOS.
* Half-finished submissions. Do not post your entry until it is complete and ready to be reviewed.
* Fan-fiction
* Submissions that do not fit the theme. You will not be allowed to re-enter if your first entry does not address the theme.
* Fairy Tales, especially in the style of The Brothers Grimm. These are not myths.

Imporant Dates
The contest will begin accepting entries on January 1st 2005.
Entries will be accepted until Noon (EST) on Febuary 11th 2005.
Winners will be announced on Febuary 14th 2005, time of day not yet determined.

1. Do you charge an entry fee?
Absolutely not. All of the contests I host are free of charge no matter how high the prizes. This is the first writing contest on behalf of my charity, because I tend to swtich contests each month. If you are interested in upcoming contests please check my charity thread or add the Dreamcatchers Mule to your friends list.

2. If you don't charge an entry fee how will you be able to pay the prizes?
Umm the same way I'm able to run a charity by myself, everything will be coming out of my pocket. Yes I already have twice what the prizes will amount to. rolleyes Come on why would I want to destroy my reputation and the reputation of my charity by hosting a contest I couldn't complete. 3. How do you want us to submit our stories? PM or just posting in the thread?
Whichever you're more comfortable with. Posting it in the thread is prefered, but if you don't want anyone to read it you can PM me. If, however you win an award your story will be appear in the thread.

4. Will I find out what I scored?
This information is available upon request. I will give you the total points from all judges and any comments I made. Individual breakdown of points is up to the particular judge, and they may withhold that info if they wish.

5. If we submit an artificial myth, do we need to provide an introductary explanation of different terms for deities, countries, etc?
It is not a requirment, but if you would like to include a preamble, you are more than welcome to do so. Just write Intro next to it or something. As long as I can tell that it's not part of the story, it's fine. Though if you have to write more than one or two sentances, I'd suggest trying to clarify it in your writing instead of an introduction.

6. Can I use Greek mythological characters, or do I need an entirely new everything?
Hmm that really depends on the character being used and the plot of your story. You will still loose points for originality, because you are borrowing from a pre-existing myth. If you borrow to heavily from exiting mythology without adding anything new or interesting I will not accept the entry.
So in conclusion. Yes you can use existing characters, but you will have a harder time making it seem like a new idea. The best way to make it original is to tell the story from a completely different perspective or ina new style. Unoriginal would be writing about the 125th Voyage if Sinbad, even if he's fighting a band of vegan midgets with photon lasers.

Well that's always a possibility, but I'm pretty confident on having a good turn out. This is the only writing contest I've seen that doesn't charge a fee, and it has one of the highest prize pots.
