It was a cold day in February the day the valley was found. Oddly enough, its plain-sight location remained a mystery for millenia, which was a phenomenon that left scientists baffled. Nestled between two mountains within a beautiful rainforest, it was impossible to have missed for all these years... Yet there it was, plain as day.

Some of those who ventured farther into the valley complained that they had the distinct sense that they were being watched. Others dismissed this theory as - for lack of a better term - utter garbage. Given that no civilised human had ever seen the valley, how could savages survive within it? All that was here were birds, a few wild cats, and, of course, innumerable species of insects. Of note, a lot of the insects and plants in the area were definitely prehistoric in nature.

After many days in the valley, the team set up a more permanent campsite, with all the modern research facilities a person could want. Machines that could extract the chemical makeups from flowers, geological analysis equipment, carbon dating machinery... They were just about set up when the attack came from all sides. People panicked and ran in all directions, of course, because the attackers were monsters! All these were eventually herded up, though, and the entire team found themselves huddling in the centre of their camp, very much afraid.

That's when they saw that their attackers were honest-to-goodness dinosaurs.

They all thought that they were about to be on the night's menu, when one of the little ones wandered up to a man in the middle of the huddle, wrapped its arms around his leg in a hug, and remained with him.

Without explanation, the other raptors wandered off without a word.

Day after day, the raptors would return, and each eve, one would 'choose' a human to care for it. In return, the raptor warns of danger and protects its human fiercely. Though they do cost a little bit - they're big animals, after all - you can't have a better, more intelligent companion. Deciding that this was the chance of a lifetime, the scientists opened the valley to others, so they, too, could know the friendship of these magnificent creatures.

Please read everything carefully (not just the rules) to avoid any misunderstandings or getting you into our grey/blacklist!!!
The Commandments of Lost River

- THOU SHALT NOT STEAL ART. This is the big fat no-no, folks. You all know the routine by now. Steal art, go to jail. Or at least, get reported and end up on our black list. (Owners making a small button or graphic for their .sig is fine, though!)

- Thou shalt not bother thy fellow players. That includes begging, spamming, harassing, discouraging, etc. The first time you do it, you'll be warned. The second time, depending on severity, you'll either be given a sterner talking to, or get booted and blacklisted. Third strike, and you're so out.

- Thou shalt not utilize spellings that would get thee an F on thy English exam. Typos happen, but PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE, no l33tsp33k or AOLisms. LRRs may not be high-density RP pets, but 'y helo thar' typing makes my eyes bleed.

- RP is NOT required. I can't keep track of who's RPing and who's not, so just because you can't fill some nebulous quota some week doesn't mean I'm going to yoink your pet away. Do I like it if people RP? Definitely! If there's interest, I'll even set up an RP thread. But I'm not gonna make you. The Raptors are happy just being able to see the world from your signature.

- Thou shalt not resell thy pet, nor ask for a refund, If you don't want it, then we'll take it back, but it's just too much of a pain in the tailfeathers to keep track of who has which Raptor at any given time. Also, you bought it, you might as well keep it.

- Thou shalt not incessantly PM the Raptor Queen! Bugging us for a Raptor through PMs isn't going to get you one any faster, and it's likely to get you on our graylist if you do it too much. If you have a question about the Raptors, though, feel free to toss us a note, we don't bite. ...much.

- Thou shalt send all PMs, trades, and other Raptor-related whatnotfoo to LostRiverRaptor, and not to thy artists. Because we are easily confused, and probably won't have any clue what you're talking about. (You can randomly send us cash, though... biggrin ).

- Thou shalt not stack quotes higher than four deep. Because it makes them bloody hard to read.

Custom Raptors
CUSTOMS

Everyone loves customs, right? How do you get one, you ask?

First, check to see if customs are open. Currently, customs are:CLOSED
Then, PM LostRiverRaptor to make sure that the space you want is still available and to let her know that you want a custom slot. DO NOT SEND THE TRADE FIRST! If you just mail us cash, we'll probably assume it's a gift, and while it'll get you on our whitelist out of love, it won't get you a raptor. biggrin

Once you get confirmation, fill out the following form and PM it to LostRiverRaptor.

Like all reptiles and birds, Raptors go through three distinct stages during the course of their life. Visually speaking, males and females look very much the same in build and structure, although females tend toward more muted colors due to needing to care for nests and chicks in the presence of the many predators of Lost River Valley.

THE EGG
User Image

A Raptor egg is approximately the length of an adult human's hand. They come in a truly endless variety of colors and patterns, leading many to hedge guesses as to what color the hatchling is! As yet, however, no one has found any connection at all between the shell color and the hatchling, but that doesn't stop people from trying to guess!

THE HATCHLING
User Image

Raptor hatchlings average about two pounds when hatched, but quickly grow to between 20 and 30 pounds in their first week, with females being larger. They eat voraciously during this time, and aren't likely to restrain their diet to just meat! Owners have reported the feisty little beasts eating everything from books to other pets, so one had better keep an eye on them!

THE ADULT
User Image

Raptor adults stand roughly five feet tall at the shoulder, though males tend to be slightly taller and more lightly built. There is no appreciable change in their appearance once they achieve adulthood, though there may be some gradual increase in size over time. After six months of full adulthood, females become capable of breeding clutches.

Q: How much does a Raptor cost?
A: Right now, it's looking like the first flatsale eggs will sell for 6k. This may change, but probably not. I'm still deciding what to do with auctions and raffles, but you're not going to see those for awhile.

Q: That's a little more than usual for a template pet, isn't it?
A: A little. But the artist is basically handpainting each one, and isn't even using 'stock' shading to speed up the process, so every Raptor will be truly unique.

Q: Will you do lineart modifications?
A: No plans currently to do any different lineart. This may change at some nebulous point in the future, but you're not going to be seeing angelic/demonic raptors or anything like that. They're dinosaurs, not magical beings! smile

Q: Can I buy toys for my raptor?
A: Not at the moment, but I may introduce toys/pets at some point in the future.

Q: How do I get a Raptor!
A: Flatsales will be initiated by a bold "FLATSALE START!" or something very similar in the thread. Although we don't require RP once you have your pet, there will be a prompt that you must respond to, which may be an essay question (about dinosaurs, maybe!) or an RP prompt. We want our babies to go to someone that will appreciate them and aren't just lightning-sniping the forum. I can't tell you how badly petsnipers irk me.

Q: But I want to RP with my Raptor!
A: By all means, do! We love roleplayers! If there's enough interest, I'll start an RP thread, but you'll never have to keep a journal (What would it say? (Toothy has grown another inch today. He got up, ran around, ate one of the dining room chairs, and slept all afternoon.) ) ... Ahem. Anyway, the Raptors aren't 'humanoid' pets, so it seemed kind of silly to make people RP with them.

Q: Do you do pet trades?
A: Depends. The owners are -extremely- picky about art quality, and on top of it, don't have the time or resources to devote to a stable of OMGMUSTRPTHISPET type pets. If you want to trade for a Raptor and have a heavy-RP pet, we may agree but ask that you waive the RP requirement. (It doesn't mean we won't RP ever, but there's only so much time in the day!)

Q: Can Raptors talk/have a civilization/etc?
A: No. Or rather, they can communicate with each other, along the lines of the raptors in Jurassic Park 2, in a series of chirrs, squeaks, and roars, but they can't speak English. They're fairly intelligent as such things go, with the smarts of about a four year old, but their reasoning skills aren't well developed, and they approach everything from a very simplistic standpoint. In the wild, they live in roaming, family-related 'tribes', sort of like wolf packs.

Well, that's all I can think of offhand, I'm sure this will get expanded as people actually start -asking- questions. ^_^

I have no idea. Ideally, maybe sometime next week. I haven't even decided how much to ask for them yet.
