Welcome to The Antherios Project, a breedables/changing pets roleplay based on H.G. Wells' novel, The Island of Doctor Moreau. It is intended to be a horror-themed roleplay set in the Victorian era, and aims to become about as true to the dark and terrifying book as one can possibly get.

11/6/06: A belated congratulations to Meeki for winning the IoDM/TAP joint auction, everybody please read the IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT on page 308. It concerns EVERYBODY in the shop.

Old News
9/20/2006: To celebrate the 140th birthday of H.G. Wells, TAP is holding a joint auction with IoDM! See details on page 303!
7/13/06: Hey, what's this?! CUSTOM ANIMAL FLATSALE OPPORTUNITY! Five or more animals are going to be offered!
Important announcement for current owners! Journals are now no longer required.

6/21/06: Some of the rules have been revised concerning roleplay, activity, and RP requirements. And after some changes are out of the way and activity picks up in the guild, Ves will be running a no-prompt, no-autobuy custom auction. Watch this thread...

Writing contest winners and other things can be found on page 197.
5/13/06: The Blood and Shale contest thread is up, and open for posting! Entries will be accepted on the 15th of may. The Blood and Shale contest offers a female hyena and a female wombat as prizes, and entry is FREE! You can find the thread link on page 179, as well as previews of the prizes offered.
4/25/06: The auction has closed, with Jynk and Jestari as the winners of the thylacine and the quagga. Congratulations to both!

4/12/06: The auction thread is up! It can be found here. Going up for auction are two animals that are now considered extinct, the quagga (drawn by ChaosKirin) and the thylacine (drawn by Ves). You may enter your written prompts now before the auction begins to get approved for bidding, as well as submit prompt responses during the course of the auction.
4/3/06: Flatsale winners announced! CLICK HERE! Congratulations to all, and thank you to everyone who entered! 4/2/06: Our first flatsale draws to a close, and judging will take place soon. Expect to see results Monday!
3/30/06: Holy cripes, FINALLY! Our first flatsale is going to be held this weekend Friday at 8 PM PST, in a separate flatsale thread, and will run through Sunday.
3/25/06: We're back, and starting to get back up to the speed of things! The shop will be having its first flatsale soon, and will be held on a weekend (but not this weekend, since things are still quite busy in Ves's offline life). Soon, the first part of the prompt will be posted, and sometime later flatsale previews will be posted to the main page. The second prompt will be released at the time of the flatsale. Watch this spot for updates, for there will be many forthcoming!

3/20/06: Ves is heading home later today, and will resume work on TAP including art, guild setup, and writing the prompts for the coming flatsale and get some things done in the day or so before the move. Keep your eyes peeled for stuff this evening!
3/15/06: Ves is going to go on a small hiatus. She will be leaving tomorrow to visit her family, and after that she will be moving. She will have little Gaia access when visiting her family, and will likely not have internet access at all at the new apartment until it's hooked up. She will be gone for at least a week, but once she returns there are many fun things planned for the shop, including a flatsale and possibly even an auction!

3/14/06: TAP is now affiliated in the name of science with the Island of Dr. Moreau. Double the beastmen, double the fun! Page 33.
3/6/06: TAP moved to Breedable and Changing Pets by the lovely Sosiqui. Thanks! :3
3/4/06: Interest thread started!

The year is 1889. In this time period, many would-be entrepreneurs participated in a wave of industrial revolution, and in some cases, absolute quackery in the name of science and invention. Experiments with questionable ethics were carried out by backyard scientists, many of them cruel and involving live human or animal subjects in hopes of creating or extracting some improbable, profitable cure for the day's maladies. One of the more popular focuses at the time - both by professional and backyard scientists alike - was animal vivisection.

One of the more famous examples of this inhumane type of surgery was carried out on an island in the Pacific by a British scientist by the name of Alphonse Moreau, kept behind closed doors and in complete isolation. Shunned by Britain's scientific community for his ideas and practices, the man turned and fled to work in a place where there were no others to shun him, there were no laws to bind him. On this isle, he was the Maker of the Law. For years, he had carried out experiments to make animals into humans, playing the dollmaker and stitching together chimeric beastmen. These series of experiments would be known as The Antherios Project.

Our story begins near the start of Moreau's career, when he first began to experiment with performing surgery on animals to transform them into men in an attempt to create a race without malice. The strange, humanoid beasts are described as "human in shape, and yet human beings with the strangest air about them of some familiar animal." However, it is hard to suppress the violent nature of the beast... but to get a better glimpse of the horrors that go on and continue to grow and elevate on the island, we must look at this tale from the beginning - to see and experience what the animals went through and what they have become at the hands of a man playing God.

You are playing the role of one of Moreau's assistants, assigned to the caretaking and maintaining of your charge, a beast that will eventually become a man with the surgical help of the good doctor. You can either have previous knowledge of Moreau, being one of his apprentices under his wing while in Britain; or perhaps a young scientist fresh out of university looking for a job. Not much time has passed since Moreau fled England and commissioned a laboratory to be built on his new island home, and he has only now began to conduct his animal-to-human surgeries that will later cause him to become quite infamous. With him he brought a stray dog to act out the first experiments upon, as well as a few extra hands for the laboratory. He has contracts signed with poachers and black market men to provide him with shipments of animals, as well as a sea captain to take any prospective assistants to tend to his ever-growing menagerie of creatures.

Stage one: The Therios
The animal as it is the way nature intended. In general, the animals Moreau experiments on are large mammals, usually human-sized or around that area. He has been known to work on smaller-than-human beasts, such as monkeys and apes, but primarily focuses on big cats, livestock, and miscellaneous predators. He does not work on reptiles or fish due to the sheer viciousness of creatures such as crocodiles and their overall small brains (as he alters the structure of the animal's brain, a reptile or fish brain lacks the cerebrum that a mammal brain does to make the necessary changes), circulatory system aside. For the same reason, he does not work on birds - ignoring the fact that they are often very small, fragile things, their wings do not lend well to transforming into hands. The animal is assigned to an assistant to be cared for in between surgeries and during recovery periods.

Stage two: The Quasitherios
It is here that the early processes of the experiment are carried out. The beast is flayed of its fur so that its skin grows back without it. Its ears will be cropped and its limbs and toes become surgically elongated to mirror human proportions, especially the toes on the forepaws to eventually turn them into hands. Because of this, it is difficult for the quasitherios to walk naturally in this stage so it is often kept laying or sitting. Once it has recovered from the elongation surgery, it begins training to walk on its hindlegs like a person. Next, the animal's skull is cut open and the first brain alteration occurs - this is the most delicate and the most gradual of the humanizing processes. The animal's thinking power is boosted, and is then taught to understand speech and basic pantomime and signing (as its throat hasn't been modified yet, the creature cannot yet speak for itself). In this crucial early stage, the animal is instilled with knowledge and understanding of Moreau's Laws of Humanity.

Stage three: The Abaddontherios
After several months of continual surgery and short recovery periods, the animal is getting closer to looking like the final product. Clumsy and awkward, the abaddontherios is now capable of walking on its own and slowly learns how to speak and reason. Its face becomes restructured to appear more humanlike, its snout shortened and teeth refitted to the new jaw shape. The animal's tail, if it has one, is removed. Lots of physical surgery is performed on the abaddontherios, thus it is almost constantly covered in bandages and fresh stitches. Sometimes, Moreau adds parts from other animals to the abbadontherios to make it appear more humanlike. Planks are sometimes tied to its back to help with the animal's posture. Its brain is altered even further, relegated to higher thinking and the capability to learn more things. These last few surgeries carry on for a few months, and then is left alone by the doctor to heal and fully transform into the final product...

User Image

Stage four: The AntheriosUser Image
The surgeries are now complete, the beast is now a man. Its hands are more deft, the antherios can now learn to read and write as well as use tools and communicate with its human peers. It is as close to human as the creature will ever get. It can think and speak and possesses a simple form of reasoning, it begins to learn about the world around it and tries to understand the world it was not ready for.

Rarely do the antheria remember what their life was like before the surgeries, but even after all of the training, the old beast within starts to come back and manifest itself. What was once a nonviolent, humanlike creature begins to take on an animalistic temperament - these creatures are then marked as failures and released into the jungle. As the animal self slowly begins to return each of the new men, more and more are released into the jungle and considered failed experiments by their creator.

Left without their caretakers, the antheria are now forced to fend for themselves and build their own society while trying to uphold Moreau's Laws of Humanity. However, some antheria are not content with this... and some antheria will want to return to their animal roots and rebel against the laws of men, realizing that they are something that they were never meant to be. As a caretaker, you can continue attempting to work with your antherios (provided it hasn't killed you), going out into the jungle to visit the creature and its village.

At this point in the storyline the focus will begin to shift on the antherios instead of the caretaker as it begins to realize things and try to attain a standing of its own among its broken society of fellow beast-men. It may develop a distrust and hatred for humans and turn on its caretaker, or maybe even side with the humans and try stay with them for as long as possible, regardless of being a 'failure' or not. This is where the tide of the story will change; a shift in perspective into the terrifying minds of the antheria as they develop into their own beings and create a mockery of human society.

Note: Antheria only have a minimal degree of physical animality: they do not have fur, tails, long ears, or digitigrade feet for example - for the most part, they will only retain small details such as black-tinted noses and lips, semipointed teeth, animalistic eyes, and sometimes claws or faint markings on their skin. The goal was to turn them into humans, not anthropomorphic "furries." They are NOT just regular animals on two legs, there are countless other shops out there if you want to have a furry roleplaying pet.

These are the shop rules as they stand now. It's advised that you read them, since they're rather important.

1. One animal per person. This may change at some nebulous point in the future if players really like their lab assistant character, and it's not uncommon for Moreau to hand them another animal to care for after their previous antherios is released into the jungle. Just keep in mind that means you'll be RPing another character and both animals/antheria will have the same RP requirements. Exceptions are made for auctions and if that person has previously proved themselves to be active in guild RP.

2. Yes, RP is required. Please be active with your animal/antherios, if you aren't around for a long time without warning then Moreau will hand your animal off to someone else who is more capable of caring for it. Of course we're going to be more lenient when it comes to RL issues coming into the fold and you let us know beforehand, but if you vanish from Gaia without so much as a trace or otherwise completely ignore your animal once you get it, expect to have it taken away and given to a more deserving person who will actually pay attention to it and appreciate the art and hard work we put into these. Also, we would appreciate it if you stopped by the thread and said "Hi!" every now and then! As of 7/14/06, journals are no longer required. Roleplay is still encouraged, though.

3. plz 2 not be typin liek dis. We're all adults here, so type like one. And if you're not an adult, well... being a teenager isn't an excuse to type like a lobotomized chimpanzee. This is a writing-based game, so we expect our players to have a decent ability to communicate with others via writing. We'll cut you slack if English is your second language and you make mistakes here and there, but if you're a native English speaker and you're too lazy to type out the word "you", we don't want "u" here. ;P

4. No co-owning. Two people playing the same character is lame.

5. No twinking! Nobody likes a twink. You only control your character's actions, not the other person's character. Your character is also not all-powerful and indescructable. A more detailed description of roleplay twinking and how to avoid it will be discussed in a later post.

6. Don't steal the art. This is pretty much common sense at any shop you go to these days.

7. Flatsale animals will go for 20k or thereabouts and will be always prompt-based. There will never be a speed-based flatsale. Winners are judged by writing skill, grammar, and ability to grasp the theme of the RPG.

8. Be good to one another. Try to refrain from fighting with other people in the thread unless it's IC.

9. ALL RP TAKES PLACE IN THE GUILD. RP MUST take place in the guild for it to be considered canon! Of course some people may goof off in the thread and pretend to RP their characters, but that is not canon or serious RP at all. Please do not take that as an accurate reflection of the characters, as oftentimes the players are just being silly with their mule accounts.

10. Please do not PM the artists about sales! Our inboxes fill up very quickly! If you have a question to ask, post it in the thread or PM the mule. That way, everyone gets a chance to read it and answer your question to the best of our knowledge.

11. No idiocy. You may ask silly questions ("hay moreau can you wiggle your ears? 8D" wink , be playfully stupid, say moronic things, or pretend to be clueless SO LONG AS you are also capable of maintaining and upholding a distinct degree of clue. That is, if you really are a moron who can't do anything without asking thirty-seven questions about it, use netspeak without irony or humor, or refuse to use your shift key in serious discussion, then our hearts go out to you but we really don't want you here. Sorry.

12. Please don't complain if the antherios doesn't come out looking perfect or beautiful. Antheria are meant to be ugly and sometimes even unsettling and scary-looking, not willowy long-haired bishonen or busty skinny women in their humanoid forms. There is no quicker way to annoy the artists than telling them that their artwork doesn't meet some unwritten expectation of yours, because we put a lot of work and thought into our pets. While it is possible for your antherios' appearance to be changed and influenced by what goes on in RP, don't get angry if we draw it in a way that you think is ugly or unappealing because it doesn't come out looking like an adorable furry cartoon character. If you want cute fuzzy anthropomorphic pets, or even just a regular cute animal pet, there are thousands of other shops out there that might be better suited to your tastes.

13. All in-guild canon RP must be formal at all times. Do not use retarded posting conventions like roleplaying in asterisks. Read the RP happening in the guild and use that as an example, we want our RP to be in paragraph format like you're writing a story. And please, PLEASE do not RP with emoticons or dumb internet words like "huggles." That's just poor taste! Running a spell-check doesn't hurt, either.

Here is an example of what NOT to do:
*walks into the bar, sighs, and stands in the corner like an angsty emo douchebag* cry emo

Here is a good example of what you SHOULD do, although we personally do not advise on walking into a bar and standing in the corner sighing like an angsty emo douchebag:
Winston walks into the bar, then sighs and goes to stand in the corner.

Q: liek omg i play a regular animal that walks on two legs and talks liek a furrie??? 8DDDDD
A: Go back and read the information about the stages and ask me that again. Go on, pay close attention to the stuff about the stages. Reading isn't that hard.

Q: Are the animals' artwork unique?
A: Yes, each animal and its subsequent stages are uniquely drawn and one of a kind. There are no templates here, each stage is hand drawn and colored. The artists spend a lot of time on their work, often spending hours at a time on a drawing just to ensure that it looks good and like something you would want to proudly display in your signature. That is why they cost more than the average B&C lineart pet.

Q: Can my character care for an extinct animal?
A: In some cases, yes. Because of the time period this RPG takes place in, Moreau may experiment on mammals that are now considered extinct such as the thyalcine because they had still existed back then. You can refer to this list of extinct mammals to see what other animals might be considered for experimentation, provided they went extinct after the 1800s. We sometimes make exceptions for animals such as the quagga, which went extinct in the wild around the 1870s -- Moreau is a man with connections, one of his poachers might come across one still alive in an isolated patch of African savanna while hunting for lions and brought it in.

Q: Can my animal escape and stay stuck in the form it's in now before becoming an antherios?
A: Ew, why would you want that? One of the pre-antherios forms is missing its skin, the other is bandaged and stitched up and possibly even covered in open wounds. It would not survive for very long on its own; it would inevitably catch an infection without human care and treatment in the quasitheria and abaddontheria forms. Take, for example, the puma monster that was in the book: It had escaped from Moreau, yes, but it was still covered in open wounds and such things. Even if Moreau hadn't gone after it, it still would not have lived for very long because of the fact it had untreated open wounds that were very prone to catching infections - and we all know that nasty diseases tend to lurk in the jungle.

Q: What's with the naming scheme? Codename? Serial number?
A: Antheria will be given a serial number, as well as a Greek or Latin codename and a more personalized "pet"/human name. The stray dog, for example, has the serial number D-1, the codename Herophilos, and the human name of Rowan. The serial number and codename are chosen by Moreau, the assistant is given the option to choose the human name for the antherios. The Greek codenames are often names of historical physicians, but sometimes Latin names are given instead (usually a word describing a quality of the animal, be it physical or psychological). I would honestly prefer that the human names given to the animals be British in origin (especially those fancy, foppish names - names like Bennington and Edgeworth, for example) or Biblical names, another popular source for names in the late 1800s - or just names from your assistant character's country of origin. It would make no sense for a British man in the late 1800s to give his animal a Japanese name like "Sakura." That's just plain tacky.

Q: Does my scientist character have to be British?
A: Not necessarily, he or she can come from other parts of Europe as well. Dr. Moreau was rather well-known as a highly skilled surgeon before becoming infamous for his ideas - surely people from other parts of the industrial world, especially the medical field, have heard of him.

Q: Can my character be a woman? I know life for women in the Victorian/Edwardian era was pretty restricting, so what are the chances of Moreau hiring a woman to work for him?
A: Fortunately for any women crazy enough to want to work with Moreau, he doesn't have the time of day to care whether or not his extra help around the compound is a man or not. Although he may show a bit of bias against women working, he won't deny someone a job if they're skilled enough and willing to help. He really can't be too picky, given that he lives on an uncharted island and all - he'll take any help he can get as long as they look trustworthy!

Q: Are there any viable ways off the island that won't get me in trouble and/or killed?
A: Now, now, why would you want to leave?

Q: What if my animal started off as a tiger or leopard or something similar with stripes or spots? Will it have those markings, or any markings at all, in its final antherios form?
A: Yes, as the skin grows back without fur it will still retain the animal's original markings over their backs and shoulders (rarely do the markings show up on the face again, because in most cases the animal's face is so dramatically changed that the skin cells' 'memory' of the markings is gone). They will be somewhat faint, darker than the rest of the skin but hard to notice from a distance. Imagine them being somewhat like freckles in coloration.

Q: How often are flatsales?
A: Flatsales are held at the artists' discretion. We are not machines, and some of us draw for other shops or have non-Gaian life to deal with. When we have the time and inspiration to draw something, we draw something, and put it up onto the block and hold a sale. Hopefully sales will be held semi-frequently, but not constantly (we artists need breaks sometimes!).

Q: Do you do pet/art trades?
A: Depending on how busy we are and whether or not we like your shop/art, yes. But please keep in mind that we the artists are very picky and won't take every single offer that comes along, due to time constraints, unless we really really like your shop. Pet trades are currently open, see the post further down titled 'The Black Market' for further information.

Q: What about sea mammals such as dolphins and whales? They're smart, wouldn't Moreau really want to work on them?
A: Hmm, I'm gonna have to say that Moreau will just do land-based mammals only for now. Not only are his facilities not set up to care for water-based creatures, but the transition from going to land from water might do a number on the dolphin and maybe even disagree with the animal's physiology - walking, especially, is going to make life hard on it. While it's true that a dolphin/whale's flippers have finger-bones in them that could be turned into arms and hands with some effort, but they don't have any leg bones that could be used as a template to work on like land-based animals. Its legs would have to be built from scratch in order to walk, and frankly, it's all too much trouble for Moreau to go through if the animal ends up dying.

Q: How big or small can the animals Moreau works on be? What are the size limits?
A: The minimum size is 50-60 pounds (roughly the size of a toddler), and the maximum size for an animal is 500-600 pounds (and that's really pushing it). Moreau doesn't have tables large or strong enough for the really big animals, and he doesn't consider anything small to be of a good enough size to become a human.

Q: What if my question isn't listed here?
A: Ask in the thread! We don't bite and will probably update this section with your question and our answer. wink

Addenum: There is now a thread in the guild that should be helpful to anyone interested in learning the details and such things about the island, and you are welcome to ask questions as well - that is the entire purpose of the thread, it's basically going to be a larger version of the FAQ on the front page. It's recommended reading for everyone, those with characters on the island and those who do not have characters yet! :3

It can be found here: http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?page=1&t=2601011#55078563

Flatsale information

Super summer flatsale! Five or six CUSTOM animals being offered for the month of July!

Price: 20k
Date:
Prompt:
Prompt One
Tell us about your lab assistant! As this is a pretty key component to the RP, we'd like to know about the human character that is going to care for the animal. Fill out the following form.
Character name: (Pretty self-explanatory, please try to keep the names appropriate to the time period and your character's nationality.)
Character age: (Please keep this realistic, and the characters adults - Moreau would not trust teenagers or kids to take care of his animals at all.)
Nationality: (The country your character hails from.)
Background/History: (As detailed as you want it to be! Tell us the history of your character. Where did they grow up? What is their education like? Do they have any scientific knowledge at all?)
Personality: (What is your character's temperament? How do they interact with other people? How do they interact with the animals? What are their world views, their quirks, their odd little habits? What makes them tick? Answer this in any way you like, tell us about the psyche of your character!)
Short physical description: (A short description of what your character looks like, no more than two paragraphs.)
How did they find out about Moreau and what brought them to interact with him? (Go nuts! Did they read about him in a newspaper some-odd years ago? Did they go to medical school with him? Or did they just wash up on his island or get pulled onto one of the boats bound there? There are many ways to answer this question. :3)

There will be always two prompts: A prompt asking you to describe your lab assistant character concept (like the one above), as well as a second prompt that changes every flatsale. The second prompt will usually be some kind of situation or small conflict, and you post your assistant's response to the situation. Winners will be judged on creativity, writing skills, and consistency as well as grasp on theme and the ability to write a solid character.

Flatsale rules:
Do not post your prompt response until the mule posts 'GO!' in large bold red letters.
Don't edit your posts.
Because these are based on samples of your writing, you may not enter for someone else.
Please refrain from using the following emoticons: crying stare scream stressed

Auction information
CUSTOM ANIMAL auction by Ves coming up, once animals are changed! No prompts, no bullshit, this is an auction the way it was meant to be run. Just keep in mind, these are still RP required and your character still has to be approved by staff before you are allowed to RP.

Auction rules:
The default starting bid is 30k.
No bid sniping.
Don't edit your posts.
Don't be a jerk to other bidders.
Co-bidding and proxy-bidding are allowed (but please remember, co-owning is NOT).
Please refrain from using the following emoticons: crying stare scream stressed

Contests

Every now and then we may hold writing/concept contests for free animals or supporting human characters (such as Prendick). These may not happen often due to the artists' personal time constraints.

No contests at the moment.

Customs are currently open. We do not plan to open customs very often, they will be served on an auction-only basis or through bribery. For each bribe recieved, the bribe price after that will increase to discourage this. For example: BlinkieSampleUser bribed me to do a custom for a million gold. The next custom bribe slot, when it opens again, will cost a bit more than the last one, and so on.

Bribery
Ves takes bribes for a custom animal every now and then -- although not terribly often, due to how busy she is outside of Gaia. There is no set price for these, if you make her an offer she can't refuse, you might be able to find yourself a place on the island... Expect to pay a lot for a bribe.

Bribe slots: Open!
1. Wanna bribe me? PM Alphonse Moreau with your offer!

Current bribe: OMG + 200k (or June/July 04 letter) or November 03 letter.

Pet Trades
I generally try not to look at most RP-based pets due to time constraints and lack of anything worth a spit to bid in auctions, so I'm not very familiar with most of the shops out there other than the ones I already frequent. sweatdrop So, my list is small right now -- but that doesn't mean I will turn down your trade offer just because it's not on here! PM pet trade offers to the Alphonse Moreau mule account for consideration, but please don't be upset if I turn it down. I'm somewhat picky, not to mention busy. For the most part, I'm looking for trades from shops that offer unique artwork and stages because I want to recieve something with an equal amount of work put into them as I do these.

Pet trade wishlist:
Area 51 (w/ Hindu Garuda DNA)
Mozou Totems (Roxie Hart & Velma Kelly from Chicago)
Kitsusagi Mountain (king vulture angelic or Charlie Chaplin cosplay)
D Corp (anteater/tamandua or king vulture)
Masquerade (plague doctor mask)
Umm... make an offer? If you're not on the list, it's because I live under a rock and don't get around Breedables much. xd ;

Yes, this is the post where we talk about twinkery as mentioned earlier in the rules post. :3 These are some general policies that we'd like for our players to uphold, just to keep the peace and goodness going on this game, both on an IC and OOC level. We hope this never becomes a problem, and it really should not, but these rules are here anyways just in case.

Powergaming, consent, and you
There will be plenty of times where conflict will arise between characters, fights will break out, and things will happen. HOWEVER, you are limited in what you can do to people by the consent rule. You may not hurt others forcably unless they agree to it.

When engaging in a scene, please try to keep your poses open to avoid powergaming or violating consent rules. For example:

Alexander and Robert are hanging out in a bar when they get into a quarrel. Alexander decides to grab a beer bottle and whack Robert over the head with it.

Powergaming:
Alexander grabs the beer bottle next to him and slams it over Robert's head, causing an instant concussion.

That is a no no. You should always allow Robert a chance to decide if he's been hit or not.

Correct Method:
Alexander grabs the beer bottle next to him and brings it down toward Robert, intent on smashing it over his head!

That's much better. Now Robert can decide if it hits him, or misses altogether, or strikes him elsewhere, say on the shoulder.

We are all adults here, so let's all remember this and behave in an adult manner without violating the trust between all of us.

General knowledge
PLEASE try to seperate OOC from IC. If your character gets zinged by the other person's character ICly, then don't carry it over and hate them OOCly. That's just ridiculous and should be common sense even if you have a two-digit IQ.

Respect other players! You may lightheartedly insult, poke fun at, or otherwise mess around with other players AS LONG AS IT'S IN GOOD HUMOR and UP TO AND UNTIL THE POINT where they inform you that you must stop. At that point, you quit it, or you die. Any intentional breaches of this rule or purposeful malaise inflicted upon another player will result in your destruction, with lesser punishments possible based upon whether or not you can make a clear-cut case. This destruction can range from a time-out period where you can't RP in-thread or in-guild for a spell of time, a greylisting and temporary banning from the guild, to having your pet taken away as well as a blacklisting depending on severity and the number of times we get complaints from other players about your conduct and have to coach you about it. On the same note, if someone is still harassing you after you've told them to stop, save it and send it to the mule. We'll take care of it.

Don't be passive-aggressive and vent out your OOC peeves with someone ICly. For example, having your sweet, good-natured medic character trip another character into a bottomless pit and then point and laugh. That's just tacky and lame.

(The rules about powergaming were written by Litilu and used with her permission.)

The GMs
Ves: The sleepy-eyed shopowner and artist. A frothing fangirl of classic science fiction and horror literature, she is often busy in "real life" but sets time aside to work on this project dedicated to one of her favorite books. There isn't much else to say about her, really. She likes to draw horrible ugly man-animals. HOMPHTH.
Selona: Put in a blurb.

The Artists
Ves: Yeah.
ChaosKirin: ChaosKirin has been drawing for years, but we can't show you what she draws. It's too horrid to mention. This is when we request that you kindly use your imaginations and don't ask questions! Ahem. In any case, she's agreed to tone down her art just for this shop. This shop of abject horrors. This shop of twisted animal-men, ALL OF WHOM WANT TO CHEW ON YOUR SPLEENS! Needless to say, you can expect fun things from her.
Closet Ninja: Put in a blurb.

New staff images pending!

And a huge thank you to our former staff for helping us in the past!

Former staff:
Mouse Pachinkorelli: Resigned, helped with plot development and RP management. She's still around to RP, though!
Coronaviridae: Resigned/retired, helped with shop development, judging, and conceptualization. Generally adorable yaksponge and Ves's favorite tricycle.
Kuyalu: MIA/AWOL, artist.

On animal cruelty: In no way does the shop owner or this shop's artists endorse animal cruelty. Yes, we realize this is a shop based on a book about animal cruelty - and we want people to realize just how harmful and damaging it can be, exactly like the message told in the Island of Doctor Moreau novel. We don't want you to go out and dissect your pets, heavens no! Keep in mind that this is not the thread for wankery and arguments about animal cruelty, we all know it's bad and evil but I want to emphasize the fact that this is a HORROR RPG. Bad, scary, and generally unpleasant things are going to happen. Realize this when you agree to participate in this roleplay. In addition, this story is set in the late 1800s. This is NOT the year 2000, and concepts of animal cruelty and ethics in experimention were almost unheard of in that era - vivisection was a pretty regular thing, and animal rights activists didn't really exist until AFTER the publication of the Island of Doctor Moreau novel in 1896 (source).

In general: This RPG is going to contain dark, violent themes. Any "soap opera" drama may likely result in a death or someone getting seriously injured. Remember that these creatures are not human, they are a beast at heart, and are not generally going to be 'domesticated' or 'tame' by any stretch of the imagination as their suppressed animal self begins to return to the surface. No animal is going to be very happy with humankind once it knows what it has gone through, in fact it will probably be seething with hatred towards its creator (although like in the book, the beastmen have the capacity to trust other humans so long as they are not associated with Moreau or show kindness towards them).

Credits: This RPG is a tribute to and largely inspired by the novel by great H.G. Wells. He can take all the credit for the idea, because he was a brilliant writer and the father of science fiction as we know it today. We love H.G. Wells, and recommend his stories to everyone. In fact, the very novel that this shop is based upon is available to read for free online! You can find it here!
