Away from the hustle and bustle of the busier streets of Barton and Gambino, and near the waters of Bass'ken lake north of Barton resides a rather unique shop. The architecture is heavily Japanese inspired, with delicately curving ridged roofs, thatched with HInoki bark and trimmed with carved designs. Red and gold lacquer seems to be the dominant colors of the building, and the smell of incense wafts towards you. Outside is a flower garden and a rock garden, elegant in its simplicity. As you approach the entrance, you see beautifully carved and amazingly preserved statues lining the walkway -- most taking the shape of narrow-faced foxes or rotund tanuki. At the door, shoes have been left behind; understandingly as you see the care that has been put into maintaining the finely polished wooden floor, and the respect deserving of the property. You hear water lapping in the background from the lake nearby, and as you enter the large room, smiling faces greet you. There are pillows and futons, a large drum with Kanji painted onto it, and a few subtly placed modern conveniences, alongside traditional amenities such as trays of tea and traditional Japanese food like sushi and rice balls.

This Store, unlike many of the purely aesthetic, cutesy pets, focuses on the more traditional meanings behind some of the now popular creatures such as the Kitsune, and the overshadowed Tanuki. Here, a Gaian may adopt a relic that these shapechangers shifted into ages ago, and have been trapped as ever since. With the guidance of their new owner/companion, they can emerge again - first developing as the animal the mythological creature is based on, and finally emerging forth as its true self once again. With the proper nurturing, these legendary creatures can even achieve their full potential and former glory.

It's that time again: Midterms. Due to the hecktic nature of my college life right now, I realize that I must take a small hiatus from this shop. Growings will most likely occur, but my apologies if they take a bit longer than they should. The good news is that as of March 10th I will have a week-long spring break, so I'll get everything caught up then. Thank you for your patience!

Updates

01-04-06 - Working on transferring SS's onto my new computer, then all I need to do is figure out how to get FTP access on a ME OS. It doesn't seem to like them...
Also, be on the lookout for a random flatsale.
01/01/06 - NOTE: My laptop, which is what I do work on, has been pulled out of my use. The screen is messed up, and it can be a month before it gets fixed, quite possibly a month and a half. Since all my drawing programs and C&S stuff is on said laptop and I have no other computer I can transfer it to (I'm currently using my mother's computer and she won't let me put stuff on it), I cannot update the rest of the Secret Santas. I am very sorry for any and all inconveniences, but the matter is out of my hand. I am working on getting another, older computer back up (a 9 cool and then, if that happens, I will be praying that Photoshop 7 (the oldest version I have) will work on it.
12/22/05 - Some of the SS pets have opened early; this is because I am on dialup and it would take me forever to upload 5 megs of images in one day. As a result, they will be opening anonymously up til Christmas. Now to answer a couple questions: You name them by posting in the thread, and realize that it might be a while before I can get the final certs out. Also, though the certs have Secret Santa 2005 on them, they are just like regular pets, and you can breed and RP them if you desire. Happy holidays! ALSO, some pets might not make it out til a day or two after Christmas; this is due to unplanned events. Very sorry, and I hope I haven't upset anyone. I'm trying to be as timely as possible while still putting out some nice pets for everyone.
11/17/05 - Sabin sends over an early Christmas present -- a male Neko anthro pose! Thank you so much Sabin, you rock!
11/12/05 - Secret Santa event begins!
11/08/05 - Chibi Hige and White Arsenic prepare the shop for reopening.

5. No begging. Any available relics will be clearly announced in the availability and in the updates section. If it says there are none available, there are none available.

3. Payment is expected immediately upon winning a relic in ANY format - auction or flatsale. If you don't have the money already, please don't try to get one.

Centuries ago, in a place called Earth, there existed many magical creatures throughout the lands, interacting with humans, and living out their lives. However, as the world shifted more towards logical and ration instead of tradition and superstition, the magic of the world began to gradually ebb away. Which caused the other is unknown, but for the magical creatures this was a time of impending danger. It became harder and harder for them to produce offspring, and sometimes those who did would birth normal animals instead of the magical creatures they themselves were. The humans also became more and more hostile towards any creature that they saw.

In order to protect themselves, some of the ancient, long-lived creatures withdrew to secluded locations to enter a deep sleep. Others, without that liberty had to resort to other means.

The tanuki and the kitsune, two races of shapeshifting tricksters in Japan, lived long lives, but many did not know if the magic would return any time soon, if ever, and if a normal hibernation would be safe enough. Instead, using their natural shapeshifting abilities, they transformed themselves into objects that held a deep meaning for them - sometimes transforming into stone statues outside of shrines, or ceremonial masks, and the like. However, as the years drug by, even as disguised as these artifacts, they fell into a very deep sleep in order to deal with being unable to move for years... decades... centuries.

I have recently discovered that a third species, the Maneki Neko, have also been in hiding for a long time, disguised as the beckoning cat statues and dice. They as well can be brought forward with enough care.

As the magic waned even further, it came to the point where even if the magic were to return, they would no longer be able to change back by themselves, but would need the assistance of another.

This is where I come in. Knowing the legends behind these beautiful creatures, I had amassed a collection of their reliquaries, hoping to someday be able to return these majestic creatures to life once more. On Earth, that was not an option. However, here on Gaia it most certainly is. However, by no means can I do this monumental task by myself, let alone care for these creatures, who will probably be very confused and disoriented.

There is, of course, always a catch. Since it has been so long since these creatures were their full selves, they have regressed. When they awaken, it will almost be like a rebirth for them. Much like the traditions before, kitsune, Maneki Neko and tanuki are born from normal animals. Traditionally, in order to become a magical kitsune or tanuki they must prove themselves. However, since they have already been magical, it will return to them over time, their memories and intelligence returning to them.... to a point.

In order to reach their full potential, however, is a little more tricky - and one reason why I myself cannot care for them all. They will need interaction and nurturing in order to fully reach their magical potential, and be able to shapeshift once again.

The Kitsune are the nimble sorcerors and courtiers of the Races

Relic Stage
(Male/Female)
When they went into hiding, the Kitsune took the forms of either traditional kitsune statues (the males) or ceremonial kitsune masks (females). These appear to be inanimate objects, but in fact are kitsune that transformed themselves into these forms long ago, and are deep in slumber.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Cub Stage
(Female/Male)
When the relics are awakened, they return to flesh-forms as fox kits. Their memories of their past are distant and fuzzy at best - and they are hardly more than intelligent foxes. They have a tenuous grasp of human language, but mostly speak like foxes. The world is a disorienting place, and things are very different than they feel it should be. They are social among themselves, and distrustful of the Tanuki. By nature, most kitsune are mischivious and curious with a fondness for pranks.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Adult Stage
(female/male)
Here the kitsune grow to their full mystical animal form, sporting two-tails, and have their old memories clearer, though frequently still detached from them or having fuzzy details. They have mastered being able to manifest foxfire and a few other basic spells that they had before (though cannot shapeshift), and are very nimble and quick. They are fully intelligent, and are able to speak.
This is also when they are able to breed and try to bring forth other kitsune.

?
True Kitsune
Very little is known about these final potential forms of the kitsune. At this point, they have complete memories of their past, and their full magical potential has returned, including the ability to shapeshift. Kitsune that reach this stage are nobles among the kitsune and have a base of 3 tails, but at this point may earn additional tails.
Very few kitsune reach this honorable stage, as it takes a lot of magic and/or dedication and extensive interaction of the kitsune.

The Tanuki are the rustic country Samurai "Goshi" of the Races: laid back, a bit rough around the edges, but stalwart and proud

Relic Stage
(male/female)
To hide themselves, the (male) Tanuki took the forms of statues, and the females as kettles, both sentimental and personal objects to tanuki (check out the Tanuki/Kettle story on the tanuki link in the story post). Like the kitsune, these may appear to be simple inanimate objects, but are actually shapeshifted tanuki.

Cub Stage
(female/male)
When they are awoken, the tanuki become tanuki cubs (which are actually a species all to themselves, not raccoons or badgers as some believe - also called "raccoon dogs" wink . They love food, and are bright-eyed about their new, strange surroundings. They are more intelligent than normal animals, but despite their intelligence, still think more like animals than people, though they do have a very tenuous grasp on human language.

Adult Stage
(male/female)
Here the tanuki grow to their full mystical animal form, and have their old memories clearer, though frequently still detached from them or having fuzzy details. The tanuki are not typically magicians like the kitsune, though are stouter, tougher and more adept at battle. However, despite their traditional abilities, they still cannot shapeshift. They are fond of good drink like sake, and good food. They are stubborn, and love to carouse. They are fully intelligent, and are able to speak.
This is also when they are able to breed and try to bring forth other tanuki.

True Tanuki
Very little is known about these final potential forms of the Tanuki. At this point, they have complete memories of their past, and their full magical potential has returned, including the ability to shapeshift.

The Maneki Neko are the flashy, agile gamblers and gangsters (Yakuza) of the Races

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Relic Stage
(female/Male)
When they went into hiding, the Maneki Neko took the forms of either traditional beckoning cat statues (the males) or dice (females). These objects represent luck and prosperity. These appear to be inanimate objects, but in fact are neko that transformed themselves into these forms long ago, and are deep in slumber.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Kitten Stage
(Female/Male)
The Maneki neko emerge as kittens - cute as a button and FULL of energy. They're overly curious (and you thought the kitsune were bad!) wanting to learn about their surroundings, get to know people, and start building contacts. They rely more on their luck than any sort of common sense to keep them out of trouble. Most of them don't think twice if an interesting notion pops into their heads. They are flashy and confident, but treat them with love and care and they will never forget it.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Adult Stage
(male/female)
the Adult Maneki neko are majestic cats, a bit larger than most housecats. With age comes a bit more wisdom, but most are still overly curious for their own good. They are gregarious and tend to form cliques and groups. If you earn their wrath: beware - what might be an easy fight with one neko could get you into trouble with all of their brethren. But on their good side they will bring you fortune and luck for a very long time.

?
True Maneki Neko
Very little is known about these final potential forms of the maneki neko. At this point, they have complete memories of their past, and their full magical potential has returned. Neko that reach this stage are revered among the other neko, taking their positions as leaders - much like a Yakuza leader.
Very few kitsune reach this honorable stage, as it takes a lot of magic and/or dedication and extensive interaction of the kitsune.

Aaah, in good time, kitsune, tanuki, neko and the like grow up and fall in love (or lust) and find it time that they themselves want to have cubs.

This annex to the main Chrysanthemum & Sword shopfront is where all that takes place. This smaller, quiet room is behind the main shop, darker, quieter, with plenty of food stored for the expecting parents.

Breeding Rules
Quote:

1. Make sure that the breeding slots are listed as "open"
2. Post the names of the two (male and female) that you wish to breed.
3. Generally, breeding can only occur between the same species (tanuki with tanuki, kitsune with kitsune, etc.)
4. Usually between 2 and 4 offspring are produced from a mating.
5. Offspring do NOT have relic stages. They are not ancient souls, they are newborn versions of kitsune/tanuki/etc.
6. Breeding costs 8k
7. If offspring are sold, then 25% of the profits must be sent back to me.

How do I get one?
~There are several methods through which you can get a kitsune or a tanuki ^^. The shop will hold RP contests, raffles, auctions and the like on occasion, as wekk as the typical flatsale. The first thing is to always check the Avaialablity post. Don't hassle owners for thir pet! If you REALLY want one, and there's nothing planned, you may want to consider a custom or a pet trade.

How do Flatsales work?

For flatsales, I will post the available relics ahead of time and announce the time of the flatsale. At about that time, I will make a "GO" post. People then post, listing their priority list of what they want in their post - it's on a first-come first-serve basis. PLEASE do not edit your post after the fact.

How much do flatsales cost?
Flatsale relics will cost between 5K and may change in the future, though its not a guarantee.

How do RP contests work?
On the announced date/time, I will post an RP prompt (usually relevant to the story/theme of the shop). People will have 20 minutes from my post to compose a reply and post it to the thread. I will then go through and pick the winner(s). If I have more than one relic available, first place gets first pick, 2nd gets 2nd, and so forth. There will usually be a cost to the winner to pay for the relic - which will be announced when I announce the RP contest.

Do I have to RP?
NO! These are RP optional pets. You do not have to RP your pet, and I will never take it away from you unless you ask me to (which I request that you do if you decide to leave Gaia on a more permanent basis).

How many can I own?
There is no limit to the number you own smile . However, You can only get a maximum of one from each flatsale. We will also occasionally do newbie-centric sales.

Should I direct link the images?
Yes. We will host images on our server, and all you need to do to watch them grow is drop the direct link into your sig/journal/site/whatever. When they reach their final stage, though, you may host them yourself if you wish.

How long are they in X stage?
Relics will come out within one to two weeks of adjusting to you, sometimes more, sometimes less. Cub to adult stage usually takes three to four weeks. Around four weeks after that, they will reach their final stage.

When can they breed?
They are able to breed when they reach the adult "animal" stage (and beyond). However, we can only handle the coupling of so many at a time >>. More information as it becomes more pertinant - keep an eye on the Breeding section.

Can Tanuki breed with Kitsune?
Interesting question! They are both magical creatures, and much more than animals. Traditionally, the kitsune and tanuki never really got along... however, if the explanation (and RP) warrents it... we might see what happens.

Do I have to join the guild?
You don't HAVE to - however, all the journals will be hosted in the guild, and I might put a breeding thread in there to manage breeding. However, the guild is only for C&S owners anyway.

RP-wise, "Where" is this shop?
This shop takes the form very reminiscient of a Japanese shrine, with lavish gardens and rock garden outside. We're on the edge of the Bass'ken lake north of Barton, in a quiet area. The shrine is large, and aside from the main room, has several guestrooms built into it off to the sides. The guild houses any RP that you want to do outside of the shop, though the shop is the main meeting area. Also, journals will be located in the guild thread.

Will you ever find relics to any more of the magical creatures from Japan?
That cannot be answered at the time. You never know what the future may hold...

Have another question? Feel free to ask - if particularly relevant, it might even make the FAQ.
