"Yusuke's late," Kurama said absent mindedly as he checked his watch. Kurama stood close to Kiseki with his bag swung over his shoulder. The boy did his best to stay near his classmate in the marsh of demons around them, both knowing that his presence put her at ease and taking responsibility for allowing her to be in this situation in the first place. "The ship leaves in six minutes."

Kira, although a demon herself, was clearly out of her element. After living among humans for so long (and never really being comfortable around youkai in the first place), the apparition was on her guard. She did her best to stick close to Kuwabara, comforted by a friendly face.

Kiseki blinked and checked her watch, ruffling her short blonde hair. Yusuke was very late. Not that she was surprised since he was the kind of guy who likely would be late to his own funeral. She also knew that the Spirit Detective did not like being rushed in any way. Still, six minutes before the boat leaves is cutting it pretty close. Furrowing her light eyebrows over her bright blue eyes, Kiseki bit her lip.

"He is. Then again, it is Yusuke. But he is cutting it pretty close."

Hiei, who had his hands shoved into his pockets scoffed, "Tch, the fool probably got scared and decided not to show. Funny since I would have figured that this oaf would be the first to run." He gestured to Kuwabara, "How disappointing."

The healer glared at him but elected to keep quiet for the sake of not starting a scene. While she would not admit it, all of these demons around her, most far bigger than herself, made her very uncomfortable. Many would pass by their group and would stare at her. Had they been humans she would have thought that they were just staring at her scars but these demon would watch with hungry gazes, some even taking the time to lick their lips. It made her pale when she thought about how some of these monsters might actually eat humans. And she was the smallest human there.

She noticed that Kuwabara was getting similar looks as her but he either didn't notice, didn't care or was pretending not to care. Kiseki was finding it hard to do any of those. There was only one person shorter than her and that was Kira but even she was a demon, even if she seemed to be uncomfortable as well. At this point, Kiseki would trade with her since she wasn't getting the same looks as her.

"Hey guys! Glad you could make it!"

Everyone in the group, and even the rest of the horde, turned to see who had spoken. Relief settled over Kiseki when she saw Yusuke himself. His hair wasn't slicked back like it normally was and a weariness seemed to hang about him, but otherwise he appeared to be in good shape. She was no prodigy when it came to sensing energy, in fact she was the worst at it out of the group, but even she could tell that Yusuke's Spirit Energy had drastically increased.

It was then that Kiseki's blue eyes locked onto a figure that was standing next to the Spirit Detective. Well, Kira was no longer the shortest of the group. Whoever this person was, they must have been about 4'10. The eighteen year old had no idea what their face looked like since it was wrapped up in some sort of cloth so only the eyes could be seen. And the frame of this fighter (or at least that's what Kiseki assumed this person was) gave nothing away as to what gender it might be. The frame was small and seemingly wispy, small for a boy but not necessarily unlikely yet it still hinted at feminine touches. But there were no curves to be seen. Actually, had Kiseki not known any better from Yusuke, she would have thought that this person was a child.

"Way to cut it close Yusuke." Kiseki taunted with a relieved grin, folding her arms beneath her bosom.

Hiei, however, suddenly moved, leaving nothing but an afterimage until he was standing next to the high school boy, "Detective."

Before Yusuke could fully face the apparition that was his teammate, Hiei pulled his sword from his sheath and that was the last Kiseki could see. She knew that they were moving and she was positive that Hiei was swinging his sword at Urameshi but as far as tracking the specific movements and attacks, that was impossible for the healer. Then, just as suddenly it started, it stopped, with Yusuke holding the blade of Hiei's sword between his fingers. The demon smirked and sheathed the weapon.

"I don't know how you did it," he said, "But your skills are ALMOST adequate."

"Aww, thanks short stuff, that's a pretty big compliment from you. So are we married now?"

"Watch it, detective." Hiei warned but let the threat hang there.

As they boarded the ship, Kiseki struggling a bit to make it up the incline onto the deck, she stiffled a shriek when a large demon made his way past her and gave a soft growl at her before licking it's lips, eyes gleaming darkly and then continuing on. Her face then turned red when she found that she had pressed herself into Kurama and quickly pulled away, not looking him in the eye.

"Um...None of these demons....eat.... humans do they?" she asked quietly, keeping a close eye on any others that pass by.

Kuwabara was mulling around with his hands in his pockets, muttering darkly to himself and casting suspicious glances around at the demons as they eyed him hungrily. "Stupid demons," he grimaced. "Yeah, that's right. Go on. Stare. Kazuma Kuwabara's gonna kick all your asses, just you wait and see.... And where's Urameshi! Jerk probably thought it would be funny to make us all wait like this --"

"Ahoy, Maties!" A voice echoed out through the forest, as a rough-looking, peg-legged demon stepped into view. "Ship leaves in two minutes. No stragglers!"

"Uh, wait a minute? Sir?" Kuwabara looked up, "We're still short a few guys."

"No stragglers," The captain repeated, turning his back and hobbling onto the ship.

"Hey guys! Glad you could make it!"

Kuwabara stopped his muttering and looked up as his friend and now teammate came into view through the forest shadows. "Glad /we/ could make it? Urameshi! It's about time! They were about to leave without us!"

"Yusuke!" Kira sighed in relief, smiling a bit "I thought you might've gotten lost or something!"

Kurama smiled and looked up as their team's leader arrived. "I see you've brought our fifth member. "

Kira's attention turned to the small, bandaged fighter that stood next to Yusuke. Her relief at seeing had been such that she had not initially noticed the team's final member. Blinking at the unknown entity, Kira studied the fighter. There was something in the way that the fighter walked that suggested a feminine, if dulled, touch, but that was Kira's only clue. The energy that her masked teammate gave off was not that of a demon's, but Kira couldn't be one-hundred percent sure it was human, either. In all honesty, it was hard to get any kind of reading on the life-force of this being at all. Kira frowned a little a little, but made no comment. She turned her attention, along with the rest of the crowd, to the two dueling teammates.

"Woah! So fast!"

"Aren't they supposed to be teammates?"

Next to her, Kuwabara's mouth fell open. "Woah! So fast! I could barely even follow their movements!"

Kira had squinted her eyes as the fight began and was, like Kuwabara, having difficulty tracking their exact movements, though a bonus to constant training with Hiei was that she was fairly decent at following his speed now. Still, he seemed to have been holding back when he was with her.

As the mass of fighters boarded the ship, Kurama stuck close by Kiseki, halting only when Kiseki pressed up against him. Kurama, his hand going instinctively up to Kiseki's shoulder, looked up in time to see the demon turn away. Shooting a dark look at the back of the demon's head, Kurama felt Kiseki pull away.

"Not while we're here," Kurama said quietly.

--
Kuwabara frowned. "Hey, what gives? Aren't cruises supposed to have pretty girls? Dinner and dancing? Entertainment?

"Alrighty, mates," The captain's voice echoed over the loudspeaker once the plank had been withdrawn and the ship had set sail. "We're gonna have ourselves a little preliminary round!"

Kiseki paled considerably at Kurama's answer. Personally she had just hoped for a 'no' but evidently that was too much for her to ask. It was so easy to talk about coming along, even forcing it so she would be coming along but now that she was actually here, surrounded by all of these monsters that barely resembled anything humanoid, it was much different. Even if Kurama had made it clear that none would harm her while they were near her, it was still a terrifying prospect to consider.

"Well...." She murmured shakily, "Guess I can't really complain...I DID ask for this. Demanded it in fact....I just didn't expect it to be so....."

Her words stuck in her throat when she tried to say 'terrifying' she suddenly did not want to admit in front of a huge crowd demons that she was afraid of them. It seemed to her that they would get more enjoyment out of it so she thought of an alternative.

"Different." She amended then added, "Suddenly, my car accident doesn't seem so bad..."

Hiei, who happened to just walk by sneered at her, "This is the world of the apparitions and here only the strong survive. If you can't handle it then you shouldn't have volunteered to come along in the first place."

He cast his red gaze down at her and she bristled at his attitude. She didn't like Hiei and it was clear to her that he did not like her. Even if he did hate Kuwabara more, it was still obvious he held a distaste for her.

"Who said I can't handle it? You don't see me running and screaming yet do you?"

"The screaming, no, though I'm sure that will change. The running though," He flicked his gaze down to her ruined left knee that she has to limp on, "seems like something that won't happen anytime soon."

"You son of a-!"

"Hey, guys!" Yusuke laughed, getting between the two at the perfect time since Kiseki had lurched forward as if she had aimed to attack him, "Let's get along now, we're going to be spending a few weeks at this island together anyways, might as well make the most of it."

Kiseki glared at Hiei who glared right back. But she was glad that Yusuke butted in. It had caused her to calm down just enough to realize that she had just attempted to something incredibly stupid and no doubt Kurama would berate her for it later. That or wound himself again in some other way to scare her and conveniently "forget" to tell her that it wouldn't kill him.

At Kuwabara's comment, she smiled mischievously, "Oh what, Kira and I aren't pretty? Thanks Kuwabara."

Hiei scoffed and stepped forward, "This isn't a cruise you oaf, merely a ship to get us to the island. They aim to do an elimination process so only one team will be left standing."

"Well that's nice of them."Kiseki said sarcastically, "Hey Yusuke, you ready to kick some demon a**?"

She blinked bemusedly when there was no response and turned to see just what the detective was doing that he could not answer her. Her blue eyes found the high schooler sitting on the ground, legs sprawled out before him and his head lolling forward so she could not see his face. For a moment she thought that he might have been hurt, that one of the demons had sneaked around and attacked. Then she heard a soft snore and her jaw dropped.

"Oh you have got to be ******** kidding me....." She said before shrieking, "Are you actually sleeping, Yusuke?! Really?!"

Kiseki limped over to him and began to shake him roughly yet it did not rouse him. She tried again, shaking even harder and still nothing worked. Hiei stepped over and looked at Yusuke critcally.

"It would seem that his training has taken effect. Don't bother. He won't wake up anytime soon."

Unsteadily, she rose to her feet, scowling, "Well he picked a hell of a time to take a power nap."

Kurama nodded, understanding Kiseki's fear, even if she would not vocalize it. "It seems we'll have to leave you momentarily," Kurama frowned, "I advise you to go stand by the captain for now.

"I, uh, what?" Kuwabara blinked, taken aback at Kiseki's sarcasm. "That's not what I meant at all! You're both very, very pretty, I just--"

At Kuwabara's reaction, Kira managed to let out a laugh, "Don't' worry about it, Kuwabara." She said, patting him on the back as she began to make her way over to the rest of the team. "We know you didn't mean anything by it." She made a pretend sniffle before spotting Yusuke, slumped against the railings, eyes closed.

"Y-Yusuke?" Kira stopped dead, her mouth wide open.

Kurama, too, had crossed over to stand by Yusuke along with Kiseki. "Stop," He said quietly, laying a hand on the girl's shoulder. "It seems our leader requires his rest. It would be best to let him recuperate until he is ready."

At the captain's signal the boat began to shake and the center of the tiles opened up to reveal a tiled platform in a circular shape. "We'll be startin' the elimination round in ten seconds.

"Yes," One of the demons grinned, "How about we kill the humans first?"

"Then we'll start on each other," Another one agreed.

"Well that doesn't seem very sporting," Kuwabara frowned as both he and Kira made their way to the center.

"Kiseki," Kurama adressed his classmate, a he dropped his bag to approach the ring. "Stay near the captain, okay?"

Kiseki nodded weakly, limping over towards the captain but made sure to keep her distance as she didn't feel overly comfortable with the ship captain. The demons, she noticed, all rushed forward to surround her friends and suddenly she wasn't so worried about herself. She didn't want them to get hurt but then again, this was also the reason why she wanted to come along. To help them if they did get hurt.

The demons closed in, drawing closer and closer to the team until they all charged. Hiei moved swiftly, drawing his Katana so it sang along it's sheath into the night. When he struck, the sword became nothing but a silver blur and it easily sliced through the yielding flesh of demons. There was a spray of blood but he was already moving to his next target before it could touch him.

The masked fighter was easily dispatching of enemies, despite his small size. Watching the fluidity and speed of his movements made Kiseki's eyes bulge. From what she could tell this fighter was human yet he was performing these amazing feats of acrobatics and easily knocking out demons despite his small size. It was stunning to see and Kiseki felt a bit envious since she could not even so much as run, let alone do things like this.

What was even more impressive was Kurama. She had never seen him in action before and the expression on his face was almost serene, as if he were merely lazing about a Sunday afternoon instead of fighting for his life. And his weapon, the Rose Whip or he so called it, was dazzling. It enthralled her as he had pulled out a harmless rose from beneath his hair and then flicked it once and it suddenly erupted into a long, green and thorny whip. What was even more surprising was it's effectiveness. Kiseki watched with wide eyes as it sliced clean through demons as efficiently as Hiei's sword.

Her eyes then flicked to a demon, one that had just barely escaped from Kurama's attack, who broke free of the group, bleeding in several places. His blood was black, instead of red. He was also large, but as monstrously huge as some of the others. The demon saw her and rushed, faster than she could have imagined, he was on her and his great hands with long claws were on her throat. He squeezed and she felt her air slowly become cut off from her lungs. Kiseki gasped and choked, trying desperately to fight down some air and get his hands off her but could not make it work. He forced her back against the railing, bending her upper torso slightly over the edge.

"You're helpless..." He growled.

Her eyes shot open, realizing that he wasn't going to let go and if she didn't get him off, she would die. Kiseki tapped into her energy and brought it to cover her hands, glowing and crackling a toxic purple. If she merely hurt him, it would likely send him into a rage and he would attack again, likely using more force. She had to make sure that he didn't get back up.

'Well guess now is a good time to try that move I was thinking about.' she thought.

Then she shot her hand forward, towards the demon's stomach. The moment her energy made contact with his skin it began to destroy and cut any cells it came in contact with until it became soft and mushy and black with in seconds. She powered her hand inward and up towards his heart until her fingers closed around the organ, she pumped out more energy and completely necrotized the cardiac tissue therein. His eyes grew wide and then he dropped heavily to the deck, sliding with a sickening squealch off her hand, dead. All she could do, was stare with wide eyes at the first creature she ever killed, pale as death, dead tissue and blood dribbling off her hand and arm. And she could only whisper one thing...

"I'm not helpless."

Kurama's movements were graceful and precise as he, Hiei, and the masked fighter all rose into the air at the same time as the demons encircled the group and charged them. Kurama's rose whip was out in a moment, as was Hiei's katana. The masked fighter, although he did not draw any weapon, was easily keeping the demons at bay. Kurama's eyes locked onto one particular demon as his fighting brought him away from the group. The demon was large, muscular, and had a gleam of hunger behind them. It was the same demon that licked its lips at Kiseki's presence. A small, nearly unseen smile crossed Kurama's lips and he brought his whip around the demon's appendages.

The demon fell, legless and armless, bleeding onto the ship's deck. Kurama waited until the body hit the grime-covered wood until he raised his whip and, after giving the demon an extremely cold look, allowed the demon the mercy of death. Then, without hesitation, Kurama returned to the circled of demons that had gathered around him in those brief seconds.

Kuwabara was having a little more difficulty dealing with his opponents than his allies were. Jumped on from behind, Kuwabara had only just managed to get himself loose when he was attacked by another demon. "Oh that's it!" He growled, "I've had it! Spirit Sword!" As he called out his technique his weapon came forward, giving its owner an offensive advantage as Kuwabara turned his attackers back.

Kira had managed to dodge her first attacker only to be grabbed behind by a second, and then third. "She smells like humans," One of them hissed, "She wreaks! Quick, kill her, and move onto the others." The demon pinned Kira's arms to her side as his fellow aimed for her chest, his claws drawn. There was a quick flash of energy and Kira's kunai formed in her hand, allowing her to stab the first demon in his thigh to get him to release her. Kira then ducked out of the way of her other attacker.

Kurama's eyes followed the demon who had just managed to survive the assault from his rosewhip. Too slowly, Kurama moved to intercept the demon and was cut off by several more. Occupied, Kurama could only watch out of the corner of his eye and hope that Kiseki's lessons had been enough.

All the demons before him, now dead, fell in time just for Kurama to see Kiseki withdraw her hand from the demon's chest, the flesh above where his heart should be black and decayed. Kurama allowed himself a relieved, impressed smile. Kiseki continued to master her abilities, and how to use them, at a charming rate.

A small line of now dead demons with wounds that once held the now evaporated knives lay in a row, scattered and leading up to Kira. She had managed to defend herself, but had allowed herself to be backed into a corner, and was becoming seriously outnumbered. Nervously, she materialized a few more knives.

"Crap, Kira!" Kuwabara looked over to see his classmate quickly becoming encompassed. "Hang on!" With a mighty swing of his Spirit Sword, Kuwabara cut down to of the demons which blocked Kira in, allowing her to gratefully slip through, embedding one of her knives in the skull of a demon as she passed by.

It was hard to believe it only took a few minutes to completely eliminate all of those demons. Yusuke, surprisingly untouched from the entire ordeal, snored softly again, muttered something about losers and then fell quiet again, still slumped against the rail. He never once opened his eyes despite the noise that had gone on around them.

Hiei scoffed at the bodies, "Amateurs."

He slung the blood off his blade a few times before sheathing it again and buried his hands in this pockets. The demon easily stepped over the corpses littered across the deck, not at all concerned if he stepped in the puddles of blood. He stopped infront of Kira and looked at her sharply.

"Well, you're weapons forming is pitiful...but passable. What on earth made you back yourself in a corner, woman?"

Over at the rail, Kiseki still stood, staring down at the demon she killed, feeling a mixture of fear and horror. That was her first kill. Ever. She suddenly felt very dirty and it didn't have much to do with the fact that her right arm was coated up to her elbow in blood and rotted flesh. It felt wrong, horrible. She knew that he would have killed her had she not done the same. But that didn't mean she had to like it. The blonde heard someone approach, but she didn't look, didn't know who it was. She was too busy staring down at the horrible thing that she had just done.

"I.....I killed him..." She whispered shakily.

"I'm sorry," Kira muttered, frowning at Hiei. For some reason she had been under the impression that her being in his tutelage would stop at the tournament. Evidently, she was wrong. She knew she should be grateful the Hiei cared enough for her continued existence that he would not let Kira simply kill herself off, but it was difficult to keep such positive aspects of the demon in mind with him critiquing her every move. "I wasn't paying attention."

Kuwabara frowned a little, coming up to side of the two demons. "Hey, lay off her, Hiei. She's alive, isn't she?"

Kira glanced at Kuwabara, grateful for his intent, though she was not sure confronting Hiei about this was the best move. No doubt it would only spark the smaller demon's anger further.

Kurama made his way across the deck, avoiding the larger, deeping pools of blood, but sloshing through a good number of them. When he cam up behind his classmate and friend, she did not look up, and nor did he expect her to.

"It was either you or he," Kurama said softly as he looked down on the fallen demon. "You made the right choice."

Hiei said nothing when she apologized. In fact, he was so used to this group completely ignoring his advice or criticism all together. While he would not say it aloud, he did feel like it was a welcomed change to have her actually listen to his criticism. He made no expression, merely 'hn'ed and flicked a casual glance over to Kuwabara.

"Yes, she is alive. And had you not been there, regardless of how much of an imbecile you are, she would not be alive now. Careless mistakes like that can get you killed."

He brought his sharp eyes back to the woman before him. She had blood splattered on her but other than that she seemed pretty intact with no injuries from what he could tell. It was strange, but he did not want for her to get hurt. He had discovered this after two months of training her. When he came to this realization, he pushed her even harder so she would not have that problem. Still...

"You could have done worse." He told her casually as he walked away, leaving her with Kuwabara.

Kiseki heard Kurama and said, "I know..."

It was so soft, she wondered if she had even spoken it at all. Demon or no, it felt so wrong what she had done. Even if it was to protect herself, she felt so filthy, like no matter how many times she bathed, no matter how hard she scrubbed, she would never be clean again. Her wide blue eyes looked down at her sullied hand before her, the limb trembling. She didn't want to get the stuff on her clothes, not for vanity reasons but she didn't want to take the stench of the deed she just committed onto the island. But she also wanted the blood and tissue off of her skin, off of her. So much so that she was even tempted to jump into the ocean, right off the boat so it would come off.

"That doesn't mean I have to like it..." She muttered, still staring at her hand.

Both Kira and Kuwabara stood, perplexed, in Hiei's wake. "That's pretty high praise coming fromt he shrimp," Kuwabara said jokingly, patting Kira on the back. "Come on, let's go make sure Urameshi hasn't rolled overboard or anything.

Kira nodded, following Kuwabara back to the side of the boat as the captain's disgruntled announcement of the advancing Team Urameshi echoed over the ship's speakers.

"Of course," Kurama nodded, putting a subdued hand on her shoulder. He did not share the same remorse that Kiseki felt at the demon's death, and it had been such a long time since his first kill he, to some extent, had difficulty recalling the shock of having his victim's blood splatter his skin. Still, he had since vowed to not kill humans since then and could assume Kiseki's shock and horror at taking the demon's life. "Kiseki," he said quietly, "Would you like to wash up?"

Back over next to the sleeping team captain, Kira and Kuwabara had settled in on either side of Yusuke, glancing worriedly at Kiseki. Briefly, Kuwabara had wanted to go over to check on the girl to see if she was faring okay, but Kira had stopped him, convinced that the girl's mentor was best suited for this job.

"She'll be okay," Kira whispered, "Kurama will talk to her."

((After this we can jump to them arriving at the hotel. xD))

"Yes..." She said weakly, "Yes."

It was bothering her so much to have all of that debris and body fluid all over her arm. It reminded her even more of the foul thing she had just done....Kiseki wished right then that her great Newfoundland, Hurricane was with her. He would whine and nudge her leg and she would knee, give him a one-armed hug and bury her face in his fur. But he was back at home where a school friend was popping in to dog sit him.

"I would ask you if I did ok..." She said in a weak joke, a feeble attempt to make herself feel better, "But since he's dead, I don't think I need to. Pretty sure I know the answer."

Kurama smiled at Kiseki's weak attempt at humor, "No," he said congenially, "No, you really don't."

--

After the boat had pulled in and the only remaining surviving being disembarked, it was a short walk to the hotel. As the seven of the group came up upon the dazzling lights of the crystal chandeliers inside, the automatic front doors slid open to admit the group. "This place is too fancy," Kuwabara muttered under his breath as he heaved a sleeping Yusuke through the lobby. "I don't trust anyone dressed this fancy."

--

Once the group had been issued their keys (one for the boys and another for the girls), they had all convened in the boys' room to discuss the coming fight tomorrow. A short knock on the door and a waiter entered, a tray of seven coffee cups accompanying him.

It was not until after the attendant had left that Kurama noticed a single missing coffee cub from the tray. "Someone is here," he said, His eyes narrowing.

"Ooh, very good," A young child's voice came from the corner of the room.

"When did he get here?!" Kuwabara stood up, "He must have been waiting in the room since before we all got here!"

"Tsk, tsk. I came in /after/ you did! Oops, I guess I did forget to knock though. Sorry!" The boy grinned and balanced himself on his teacup, "So you're the special guests, huh? Lucky."

Kiseki felt much better after she got her arm cleaned up but her relief was short lived. The moment they all stepped into the hotel everyone of the people inside turned to look at them. It was obvious that they were rich for not a single one of those people were dressed casually. There was tuxedos and gowns, expensive watches and high dollar diamond necklaces. But above all there were sneering or superior looks. Many of them looked down their noses at the group, as if they weren't even worthy to be in the same room as them.

"So that's the guest team, eh?" Spoke of the the older gentleman.

A lovely blonde woman surveyed them with cold indifference, "I thought they'd be taller."

"Be nice Caroline. They're about to be dead soon."

It was then that Kiseki realized that they were actually speaking in English and likely thought that none of the group could understand them. She felt a growl rumble in her throat and she was tempted to shout that she could understand them just fine and they needed to shut it. But she stayed her tongue. These people, from what she could tell, are humans and excessively rich. She didn't need to have them hire someone to cut her throat in the night for mouthing off to them.

"Why would they bring such a pitiful girl with them? Look, she can't even walk normally." chuckled a small man, "She'll be the first to go."

She shifted uncomfortably.

"And those scars." Caroline added in with a satisfied smirk, "How unbecoming."

Kiseki wanted nothing more than to just curl up and disappear from sight. So it was a blessing when they finally reached their rooms where she tossed her large bag onto a bed and then heading back to the boys room. When the coffee was brought for them, Kiseki began to dump in several creamers and sugar so she could find the beverage tolerable. When her friends looked at her funny, she grinned.

"I like a little bit of coffee with my cream and sugar."

When Kurama narrowed his eyes at the tray and said that someone was here, the blonde felt herself go pale and then jumped when she heard a voice behind her, near the door. Surprise painted itself across her features when she saw it was kid, that looked to be about nine or ten years old. But she knew that this was no normal kid. A child couldn't have sneaked into the room with out any of them noticing.
