"Night Kunoichi (Starter)

The day was like any other of the week. The sun was shining, there was a pleasant breeze that graced the city, there were fluffy white clouds that flecked the sky that was a forget-me-not blue. Things were beautiful and perfect for a day of lounging in the sun in the park.

'It's a shame,' Melody thought, 'That it's a day that must be wasted imprisoned inside of a school.'

The American lifted the strap for her messenger back containing her books higher on her shoulder and tossed her stylishly messy, short blonde hair. Despite the fact that she wished she could enjoy the day with out the burden of school, Melody was excited to be returning, especially after her near death car accident only two weeks or so ago. Truthfully, she still felt sore and her dad wanted to keep her home for the first week but after that close encounter, she was ready to get out into the world and live!

She paused infront of the large private school, fingers drifting up to self consciously touch her large scars. The one on her neck, while she still felt insecure about it, didn't bother her near as much as the one on her face. It was impossible to miss, stretching from her temple all the way to her jaw, it marred and slightly pulled at the skin, mildly disrupting the symmetry on the left side of her face. Her fingertips could feel the puckering of the scar tissue just beneath her skin and there were still places where it was scabbed over. Before leaving the apartment, she had tried desperately to cover the inflammed pink coloration with foundation but nothing could cover it effectively.

'Come on girl,' She told herself firmly, 'You gonna stand there and stare until it sprouts legs and walk to you or are you going to work up some courage and walk in there with your head held high, scars, ruined knee and all?'

Blue eyes glinted in resolve and she set forward at a slow limp, her shoulder bag bouncing uncomfortably on her hip, causing her skirt to sway. In truth, Melody wasn't too thrilled at the prospect of wearing the dressy uniform with her knee as bad as it was but there wasn't much she could do, so she decided to just put up with it. Then she caught sight of a familiar face and felt her heart soar at the prospect of not being so alone in this new school.

It was Suichi Minamino, Shiori's son. She had only met the boy (the very handsome boy she would admit) because she had taken a habit of limping to her room to chat with her. The older woman was pleasant company and since her dad was forced to return to work after she had regained consciousness and was stable, she had felt lonely. Suichi had come in to visit and he was a very pleasant, nice guy. However, after looking closer at the attractive red-head, her heart sank.

'It figures I would get acquainted with a popular kid. I'll probably never get to speak to him again.'

Melody looked closer and felt her self-esteem plummet. Not only was he surrounded by a bunch of people but all of them girls and every last one of them pretty. She felt her head droop and began to fight her way up the stairs, her knee throbbing every step of the way before she tripped midway, tumbling ungracefully to the concrete steps, books falling out of her messenger bag. But the moment she landed on her bad knee, books was the last thing on the American girl's mind. She let out a string of every curse word she knew in english, trembling hands resting over the injured joint, already bleeding on her legs. She blushed hotly when the girls around Suichi giggled at her fall.

"If I survive this school year," She growled to herself through gritted teeth, "Kiseki will be the most adequate and perfect replacement name ever."

School, Yusuke decided, was the most stupid thing ever. Filled with stupid teachers, stupid books, stupid people stupid uniforms. Well, not completely stupid, he realized, after thinking of how it made it easy to lift Keiko's skirt and see her lacy panties. A grin crawled across his face at the thought but then it disappeared when he thought of the teacher who taught this class, Mr. Iwamoto.

'Guy dies, becomes Spirit Detective and still has to go to this STUPID damn school....' He groused to himself, propping his legs, 'Shouldn't there be freaking perks that come with this job?'

He gave a low growl, causing students sitting near him to flinch away, worried he would lash out at them. Yusuke flicked his brown gaze around the room and saw that every one of the students in the classroom were staring at him warily, as if he would attack them at any given moment.

"What are you all looking at?!" He snapped.

All the students quickly turned away, trying their best to pretend that he wasn't in the room. God he couldn't wait until Kuwabara got there. Then it wouldn't be THAT stupid. He could always mock him, maybe if he got lucky he could beat the boy up, that always made him feel better! Face resting in his palm, the junior turned and looked out the window, scowling at the crystal blue sky. Today would have been a very nice day to skip and go to the arcade, play some Goblin City or pinball.

'Why the ******** did I come to school today?' The spirit detective thought annoyed.

Yyyyyyy
“Suiichi! Suiichi!”
A cute, brown-haired girl with two ribbon tied pigtails was practically bouncing on the balls of her feet as she and the rest of the unofficial Minamino fanclub all vied for its namesake’s attention.
“How was your weekend, Suiichi?” The girl did her best to fall in stride with her taller red-headed classmate, “Did you rest at all? You can’t work too much, even with that brain of yours! It’s not healthy.”
Kurama, or as he was known in this current setting, Suiichi smiled serenely as he slowed his pace, given no other choice by the small wall of female students that were crowding around him.
“Oh, hello.” He turned towards the girl, “My weekend was quite good, thank you. I trust yours was satisfactory, as well?”
He nodded towards the girl and she all but melted. This caused a rustle among his fans to try and shift his individual focus on each of them in turn, successfully completely barring his path to the school entrance. Mentally, Kurama sighed and prepared to wait until the start-of-school bell allowed him his freedom. Out of the corner of his eye, and over the heads of the girls around him, he saw a familiar, limping figure. He watched her for a moment, picking up on how her body seemed to move. She was doing much better, he thought. Though she was obviously still in much pain. His mother, at least, would be happy to know that Melody was doing well. Kurama’s fan group’s rapt attention to him was broken momentarily by a wave of giggles, and he had a good guess as to what they were laughing at. The Melody girl, Kurama had seen, had trouble getting her still healing body up the school steps had fallen, spilling her books and a bit of blood on the steps.
“Excuse me,” Kurama said briefly to the circle of girls around him.
Stepping quickly through their borders, he made his way swiftly over to the blonde girl and offered her his hand. The group of girls watched from a few feet away, surprised.
“Miss Thorne, right?” Kurama said with a polite smile as he helped Melody to her feet, “I’m not sure you remember me; I’m Suiichi Minamino, Shiori’s son. I believe you were rather close with my mother while she was in the hospital?” He picked up the spilled contents of Melody’s bag, “It’s good to see you’re doing better; my mother is quite fond of you. I enjoyed talking to you as well.” He handed her school books to her, “It’s good to have you back at school, I’m sure.”

"Of course," Kurama said. "It's right down the hall. Kurama nodded to his right. From where they were standing, they could see the two water-fountains outside of the male and female restrooms. "Why don't you go wash up? I can talk to the nurse, if you like, and get our excuse notes."
Kurama started into the nurse's office, then paused to look back at Kiseki. "I know what I said must be overwhelming," he looked at her, "But please, try not to worry too much. I promise I"ll explain what I can after school." He knew this was an impossible request-- after all, Melody, a normal human, had just been thrown head-first into the Spirit World. But he felt he needed to mention it.

"Excuse me," Kurama looked in before he entered the nurse's office. "Nurse?"

--

Kira swallowed. Being on the end of Urameshi's glare was something, she decided, she didn't really want to be ever again. Maybe this was the side of him that the school was afraid of? Certainly not the friendly, laid-back student he had been when he first greeted her. "Spirit Detective?" She echoed. That sounded familiar. But hadn't Spirit World been short in that employment for years now? She frowned slightly. The last time she had been involved in anything like that was.... well, she couldn't really remember. But she wasn't keen on going back into that world.

Kira's gaze snapped over to Kuwabara as he burst through the roof and all but shouted her identification to the world. "How do you know?" She said before she could stop herself. The orange-haired boy surprised her. He must have had a high sensitivity to different energies. She was normally weak enough to be able to pass as a person; the fact that Kuwabara had been able to pick up on her demonic energy unnerved Kira a little.

Nervously, and knowing that there was no way out, Kira put her hands up in the air in a gesture of surrender. "I-- yes. I'm not human," she frowned slightly, "But I live like one, okay?" She looked at Yusuke with an almost pleading gaze. "I just live in the Human world and I don't do anything evil or demon-y or anything like that. I just want to go to school and be normal. Please don't report me or anything."

Kiseki limped off to the bathroom, her mind still racing from the past few minutes. As she cleaned up herself, she kept thinking about Suichi's words. Powers... That can't be true. People don't HAVE powers, yet Suichi was talking like it was something that could actually happen to some people. And what's more, how does he even KNOW about this stuff anyway? Had this happened in front of anyone else, they would have freaked out right along with her. But Suichi had not and that made her wonder why.

Night Kunoichi

By the time she came out of the bathroom with clean knees, she began to think maybe there was some truth to what her classmate said. Normal people would have been unable to keep calm, let alone come up with an explanation (no matter how unlikely it is) about the occurrence. Suddenly, the end of the school day seemed a decade away. She wanted answers. By the time she reached the end of the hall, Suichi had their passes from the nurse. A feat she was very impressed by since most nurses would have required to see the injured person in question. At least in America they would have. Kiseki accepted the slip of paper in a bit of a daze.

"See you after school... And thanks for the help." She said a bit weakly.

*******

Yusuke narrowed his eyes at Kira's request.on not reporting her. Well, she would just like that wouldn't she? She was a demon just like Hiei. But then again, the fire demon had proven himself trustworthy when he saved them from being crushed in Maze Castle. She was just like Kurama-wait Kurama! That's how they could determine whether she was trustworthy or not. Foxboy was a good judge of character and was very smart, it would be perfect.

"I won't report you...yet. We gotta decide if we can trust you. Meet us at the old baseball field after school. If you don't show up, I'll hunt you down and drag you there. Got it, Goldilocks?"

Kurama nodded as he handed Kiseki her note. Normally the nurse would have probably had to check out the student, especially for being late for class, but with Suiichi's being on good terms with nearly everyone in the school-- faculty included-- did have its advantages once and a while. "I'll meet you by the gates later. Please try to concentrate on school," he said earnestly.

The day seemed to go slower for Kurama, and even the Meiou High's top student was a little more distracted than normal, though Kurama was pretty sure no one noticed. Still, he was a little anxious on speaking to Kiseki. Would he have to erase her memory? She was a normal human after all and Spirit World didn't normally operate with humans having special powers. Perhaps he would speak to Koenma later. That meant that sooner or later, Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Hiei would probably find out about this girl, too. Kurama frowned slightly. Hopefully this wouldn't turn into as big of a headache as it currently seemed.

When the final bell rang, Suiichi packed up his books, bid his classmates good day, and set off at a brisk walk out of the classroom. He would have to skip Biology Club today, and luckily the cleaning duties fell on other students. Kurama reached the front gates without terrible interference and looked around. Kiseki wasn't there yet; he figured she was still finding her way or perhaps having a bit of difficulty getting around. Either way, he didn't mind. It gave him time to mull things over.

--

Kira nodded weakly. She honestly didn't doubt the fact that Yusuke would quite literally track her down and bodily drag her to their meeting place. She didn't doubt it and she didn't want to test it. "Right," she muttered. "Baseball field."

At 3:00, Kira was out of the door. Being a new student she had no clubs or sports that she had signed up for yet; something, she thought, that was probably a good thing, at least considering today's circumstances.

She reached the baseball field quickly enough. An older, smaller one that was no longer used. Easy enough to find, even if it was a bit of a trek from the main building. In the distance she saw a head of violently orange hair, along with a darker, shorter silhouette. Slowing down slightly, Kira took a deep breath and paused momentarily before continuing on.

"Hello?" She asked nervously as she came up on the two boys. "Uh... I'm here. Urameshi? Kuwabara?"

--

Kuwbara sensed her before he saw her. He was amazed that he hadn't pin-pointed her as a demon earlier, even when she simply walked into the classroom. Perhaps his senses were off a little? He frowned slightly. Normally, even simple poltergeists were enough to alert him, why hadn't this girl? Well, he figured, that was even more reason not to trust her.

"Urameshi," He whispered. "What are we gonna do?"

It was a tremendous relief when the final bell rang at last. If Kiseki could run and jump, she would have done so with glee. Despite what Suichi had said about her focusing on the school day, this had proved to be an impossible task considering the events that had happened that morning. It seemed to take forever to navigate through the crowded halls, limping painfully slow.

What was even more irksome was every now and then she would pass some of Suichi's fangirls and they would whisper conspiratorially as she limped by. A couple times she caught the word "scar face" and those times it took all of her self control not to confront those girl. Kiseki was normally much more easy going but considering the anxiety she was experiencing, she had no patience for the ridicule they were speaking in lowered tones. When at last she made it she smiled weakly at Kurama.

"Ok, where should we go to talk about this?" Wincing at how her northern accent marred her mediocre japanese, "I don't think this is the kind of talk that others should hear."

****

It was the first time that Yusuke had stayed an entire day at school in weeks. Normally he'd leave just before lunch or he'd get kicked out before the school day was over. Usually by Mr. Iwomoto but there have been times where Mr. Akashi and other teachers had joined in too. But today, because the Spirit Detective was thinking so intently upon the events this morning, he was too quiet and distracted to cause any trouble. He mostly went through the day, not caring if he ran into anyone.

He mechanically rose from his seat when the final bell rang, his bookbag tucked under his arm, plowing right through the crowd of students. They all scrambled to move out of his way, not wishing to invoke his wrath. Yusuke didn't remember walking to the baseball field but reality snapped back to him when Kuwabara arrived and whispered to him. It was then that he heard Kira calling for them.

"I was thinking we could take her to see Kurama." Yusuke whispered back, "Foxboy is much better at spotting a lie than either of us."

Kurama smiled softly when he saw Kiseki approaching and nodded towards her in greeting. Kurama nodded in agreement at the girl's sentiment. "No, I don't believe it is," he said simply. "There is a park near by that is usually empty around this time; it's a short walk, don't worry. Would you like to go there?" Kurama looked at her. True, it would be easier for Kiseki to simply stay here, but the chance of being overheard was too great. Also, Kurama believed that Kiseki wouldn't really mind a walk; she did not strike him as the sort of person that he would need to baby or shelter.

--

Keiko had been surprised when Yusuke had stayed the entire school day. Surprised, but pleased. Then Yusuke had scrambled out of the room so fast that Keiko hadn't even had time to talk to him before she was roped in to attend to her class president duties. She watched him and Kuwabara head out the door together, though, both with rather serious looks on their faces. Perhaps something was wrong? She made a mental note to stop by Yusuke's apartment later to check on him and say hello to Atsuko.

--

Kuwabara nodded. Take the girl to Kurama. That sounded like a sound plan. After all, he was pretty good with people, like Yusuke said. He just seemed to know about... things. Yeah, that seemed like a good idea. As Kira approached, Kuwabara fixed her with a gaze. He had been a good deal less friendly to her since finding out that Kira was a non-human, but he figured that it was pretty justified, even if a little part of him did feel a bit guilty. After all, Yukina was an apparition as well, and she was one of the sweetest, kindest girls he had ever met. Frowning a little, Kuwbara walked up to Kira and held out his hand. "Uh, hey." he said gruffly.

Kira, a little taken back at Kuwabara's initiative, took a moment to process what he wanted. Then, with a small smile, she shook his hand. "Hello."
"So," she continued after a moment. "Uhm, what exactly am I supposed to be doing? Are you going to test me or anything?"

((ooh, yesterday was my birthday! I got the YYH 3 Kings Saga DVD set. : D Also, is Yusuke gonna call/text Kurama or something? XD They can all meet... somewhere.))

Kiseki flinched inwardly. While she certainly believed that the park was not a great distance away, her knee would not be very quiet about the journey unless it happened to be right around the corner. But the blond knew she was not that lucky. Still, she refused to let it hold her back nor show it on her face her dread on the walk to the park. It had been an agonizing progress and when they finally reached their destination and a bench for her to sit on, she immediately began to ask Suichi questions.

"Ok. What happened this morning? What the HELL is Spirit Energy? How would I even HAVE powers? And even if it was possible how the hell would you know about this stuff? Do you have powers to? Do all humans have powers?" Kiseki was forced to stop since she said everything so quickly that she ran out of breath.

****
Yusuke gave a crooked smirk at Kira's question. Truth be told until only an hour before the bell rang signaling the end of class did he know exactly what he was going to do. He picked the end of the school day to talk to her about her little light show so it would give him more time to figure out what to do.

Yusuke was not good at dealing with anything that didn't involve swinging his fists and while Kira had used her powers in front of other people, she didn't hurt anyone. Yusuke didn't want to hurt her yet since she hadn't done anything to deserve it yet.

"Nah, no test. We're gonna have you talk to someone who is real good at spotting lies and knowing people."

The Spirit Detective pulled out his cell phone and dialed the number of a certain red-headed fox demon.

((Awesome! Happy birthday! :3 And yeah, I had planned to have him call Kurama. It'd be easier that way. And I'd figure that they should also meet up at the park.))

((Haha no that works. I could see either Yusuke or Kuwabara screwing it up. xD So we'll just roll with our favorite street punk messing things up. lol))

When Suichi came back after getting off the phone, Kiseki had planned to ask him about how he knew about this stuff but never got the chance. Her classmate told her about how she was going to meet someone else in a similar predicament and her question for Suichi immediately flew out the window. Kiseki now felt better that she wouldn't be facing this alone. She waited in silence, deep in thought about how things may play out. She was so focused on her own thoughts that when Yusuke, Kira and Kuwabara arrived she nearly jumped out of her skin.

"Yo, Kurama." The Spirit Detective greeted, "This is the chick I told ya about. I have to admit I considered just taking her to my house. With that power she's got mom would LOVE the savings we would make on electricity."

The boy smirked a bit at his own jab and lightly pushed Kira forward for Kurama to observe. Just enough force so his red-headed friend could get a good look at her but not roughly or cruelly.

"Here she is fox-boy, in all of her demon glory. The name she gave the school is Kira."

Kiseki blinked, "Foxboy....? Kurama...? What the hell?"

Yusuke did a double take, staring at the small blonde girl as if she was something that he never expected reality to create. When his mind seemed to register that there was a young girl sitting on the bench and that she had just heard him blurt a part of Kurama's secret identity he scrambled for an excuse.

"I uh, just ignore that! You see, uh-" Yusuke suddenly realized he forgot Kurama's human name and just gave him a nickname like he tends to do, "red and I here are friends and those are my nicknames for him."

Kiseki was unimpressed. Before she came to Japan she had been actively involved with the Theater program and classes at her old high school and she knew improvisation when she saw it. And Yusuke Urameshi was not, by any means, a master at it.

"If your going to lie, you should do a better job." she deadpanned, not at all amused at the fact that not only did he lie to her but believed her stupid enough to buy his poorly passed off excuse.

This made the Spirit Detective annoyed, "Hey, who said I was a liar?"

"You did. With that horribly slapped together lie."

"Yeah? Well since I seem to need to lie about something, girlie, how about I just give you amnesia and we can call it a picnic." Yusuke balled his fists as he spoke, raising his right up to face level, "I've handled punks on the streets and sent them crying to their moms I think I can handle a little cripple."

Even before her accident, Kiseki never liked to be babied or treated like she was incapable in anything. And now that he just pointed out something that would cause her to need to lean on others more than she was comfortable with, her anger spiked drastically. Grinding her teeth, she stood from her bench and limped over to the boy who had angered her so.

"Hey, if I can handle and survive a car accident that doctors said should have killed me, then I think I can handle you; a nobody punk on the street who thinks he's hot s**t because he gets in a few brawls in dark alleyways." Kiseki smiled thinly, "So you wanna hit a cripple? Go on ahead. I'm sure all the punks out there will bow to how tough you are."

The two faced each other down, glaring into each others eyes for a moment before Yusuke cracked a smile and began to laugh. He then threw an arm around her shoulders good-naturedly. Kiseki, however, was utterly confused. Weren't they just fighting? What?

"Haha, I like her! She your girlfriend fox-boy? I like her better than those crazy b***h fan girls you have lurking around your school." Yusuke guffawed.

"You....what is with you?" Kiseki asked incredulously, "Weren't we just about to tear each others throats out?"

"Hehehe, maybe. But you ain't so bad. You're a tough little cripple, I'll say that."

"Don't call me that..." She grumbled, folding her arms.

((Poor Kira, reduced to a lamp. xD that made me laugh.))

Kurama sat contentedly next to Kiseki as she mulled things over in her mind. He did not intrude on her thoughts as the two waited for Yusuke, Kuwabara, and the unknown demon to appear.
Kurama looked up as the three approached and stood to greet them. "Hello Yusuke, Kuwabara." He nodded to his teammates, then turned his attention to the new arrival, Kira. Kurama gave her a friendly enough smile as Yusuke pushed her forward and held his hand out to shake. Kurama raised an eye brow at Yusuke's commentary, but said nothing. This girl's power was related to light? Unusual, but not unheard of in the demon world. "Pleased to meet you," Kurama said, shaking Kira's hand. "I"m Suiichi Minamino. You're Kira?"

Nodding, Kira shook Kurama's hand before quickly withdrawing it. The boy was very well spoken, she had a hard time believing that he was on the delinquent Yusuke's speed dial. He was very good looking, too. Kira felt herself grow a little warm in the face. "Yes," She responded. "Kira Takashi. Nice to meet you, too."

Kurama was about to introduce Yusuke and the others to Kiseki before Yusuke continued to talk. Before Kurama could stop him, Yusuke had unveiled quite a few things Kurama (and undoubtedly Spirit World) would have preferred to keep under wrap. With a hopeless look at Yusuke, Kurama turned back to Kiseki. The damage already done, he simply waited for her reaction to Yusuke's words.
"Yusuke..." Kurama groaned under his breath as Kiseki launched herself on the new information.

Yusuke was the only person (aside from perhaps Hiei) that Kurama knew who could get into a fight with a person less than twenty seconds after meeting with them. Kurama watched, mildly entertained, from he side lines and Yusuke and Kiseki duked it out for a minute. He was impressed with his classmate's backbone; not many people he knew could stand their ground with Yusuke when he was being intimidating. Truly, Melody Thorne was an interesting girl.

Kurama watched as Yusuke's tough-guy act immediately dissipated in response to Kiseki's spark. He smiled slightly to himself, resisting the urge to roll his eyes at Yusuke's antics. Next to Kurama, Kira looked just as confused as Kiseki, although she had already had an encounter with Urameshi's volatile personality, she didn't really expect it to go the other way, too.

"Really, Yusuke," Kurama said, stepping forward. "You should work on your tact. And no, Melody-- Kiseki-- is a classmate. She's new to my school. And I'm afraid that so far Meiou High has been less than welcoming to her." He tossed Kiseki and apologetic glance.

"So," Kurama turned to face the four other teenagers. "Now that introductions are done..." He frowned a little and glanced over at Kiseki. "I suppose there's no use in covering up now," he shot Yusuke an accusatory look. "I promise I'll explain everything in due time," he promised Kiseki, "But first..." Kurama approached Kira. "You're a demon, then?" He studied her for a moment as Kira nodded hesitantly, "Yes... That's right."
"What is it that you want? Why are you in this world?"
"I... don't really /want/ anything," Kira said earnestly. "I just want to live my life; I was trying to get away from demons and spirits, but..." Kira shrugged, "I guess that's not really possible." She cast a glance around at her current company. "As to why I'm here... well, that's a long story...." Kira trailed off.
Kurama nodded. "I see," he said. "I can fully sympathize with you on some aspects," He said wryly. "And I can respect your privacy..." He turned to Yusuke. "Kira seems perfectly fit to continue her life here, but we should still alert Koenma as to the fact that we have another demon running around Earth. Dont' worry," he added reassuringly at the expression Kira wore on her face, "I'll request that he allow you to continue as you were to the best of his ability."

Kiseki flinched at Kurama's mention of how the school had been less than welcoming to her. The fangirls, as Yusuke had dubbed them, which made so much sense now that he had given them that name, had not been very happy to see her. She had already heard a few insults whispered about her.

"Yeah, "Kiseki admitted rubbing her head, "I thought I was going to be sent back to the hospital."

Yusuke laughed, "Yeah those fangirls of his are psycho bitches. I'd stay away from them."

"Believe me, that's no problem."

"Although, now that they've seen you with Kurama here, they probably won't ever leave you alone."

The young blonde looked mortified, "What?! Just for talking with him? Wait, how is this fair? He came up to me first!"

"Hey, don't look at me. If anything that means they'll hate you more."

She groaned and flopped down ungracefully on the bench, using her hands to keep her skirt in place. Lamenting her luck, she listened glumly to the exchange between Kira and Kurama. She immediately forgot her worries about school the moment demons came into the conversation between the two. This stunned Kiseki and confused her a bit.

"Wait a minute, what's this about demons? They....can't actually be real can they...?"

Again, Kurama looked apologetically towards Kiseki. He knew his involvement with the girl would not make her school-life any easier, but he couldn't have just left her alone, originally for his mother's sake if not for his. And now with the most recent events... Kurama sighed inwardly, he didn't see any possible way that he and Kiseki would /not/ end up talking at least once and a while.
"I'm sure none of them know where Kiseki is now," Kurama chided Yusuke, "Even they don't follow me all the time. Don't worry," he said grimly, "They won't do anything too terrible..." 'I hope...

Kira looked at Kiseki, mildly surprised at her question. She had been under the impression that she was in the company of people who had generally accepted otherworldly information. Kira shifted uncomfortably from one foot to the other. "Yes," she said, looking at Kiseki, "We're real."

"Are they real?" Kuwabara laughed, "Yeah they are! And we've pounded in only a couple hundred demon faces so far!" He grinned, flexing his muscles. "That's not to say they're all bad though," He added quickly. "There's this one girl, Yukina? She's technically a demon, but she's the sweetest girl you'll ever meet. Pretty, too! Heck, even Kurama here's supposed to be a demon, though I've never actually seen any proof of that... That's what Urameshi tells me anyways!"

It was hard to believe what she was hearing. It had already blown her mind to learn that she had powers and there was some sort of energy called Spirit Energy that everyone possessed. Now she has discovered that not only do demons exist but one of her own classmates, who happened to be very nice, was also a demon. Her world had been sufficiently rocked.

"God, this is crazy! So where do demons come from? Don't tell me it's Hell like in Christianity."

"Nah nothing so stupid. They come from Demon world." Yusuke said, laughing.

"Well that's.... to the point. So does that mean you two have powers?" Kiseki asked, gesturing to Yusuke and Kuwabara.

"Damn straight. I have my nifty little buddy, Spirit Gun!"

The boy curled his fingers on his right hand until it formed the shape of a gun. He aimed at the young blonde, and made the motions like he was firing a gun. Melody was now convinced that he was just pulling stuff out of his a**. None of this was real. It couldn't be.

"This....this can't be real. It can't be..." She muttered holding a hand to her face.

"Hey, you don't believe me?" Yusuke asked, "How's this for proof?"

He held out his hand again, twisting his fingers to form the shape of the gun again. Things grew still and suddenly light began to gather around Yusuke's fingertip. Kiseki blinked her blue eyes, unsure if she was seeing what was happening. The light only grew brighter until an electric blue light was forming an orb around the boy's fingertip. Then, it dissipated.

"O-ok then....."

She sat down feeling a bit faint.

"Sui-Kurama, is that how you knew about Spirit Energy and my powers? Because you're a demon?"

"So does that mean you'll be training us on different days or something? Since our powers are so different..."

"Hehehe, don't worry. Foxboy will handle it. Trust me, you don't want the old fossil teaching you. I don't even think the hag would take on anymore students right now anyways. She'd probably make you run laps even WITH your ******** up knee."

Kiseki cringed at the thought of having to run at all on her ruined joint, let alone make laps. This Genkai character sounded like a brutal teacher at best. She was glad to have Kurama teaching her. Suddenly a thought occurred to her and she turned to the red-head.

"Your fangirls are going to rip me apart once they learn that I will be hanging out with you after school now!"

Yusuke laughed, "Yup. Now that you've met Kurama you're going to have to live with one eye looking over your shoulder. Or they'll getcha!"

"You're not helping!" She exclaimed, mortified.

((sweet! :3 And yeah, that will work out great. xD))

Kurama nodded, "Different days would probably be best," He turned to Kira. "You attend school, right? It may be easier for us to do our lessons on weekends, considering that you go to a different school. Kiseki and I can do after-school lessons, if that's okay with her. Though," He looked at Kiseki. "If you like," he said jokingly, "I can do my best to ignore you at Meiou; that may help to deter them from bothering you."

"Fangirls?" Kira raised an eyebrow, looking at Yusuke and Kuwabara for some clarification.

"Uhuh," Kuwabara said soberly. "Kurama's got this crazy legion of psychopathic girls that follow him around school all day! They'll bit off the head of anyone who steals his attention away! They're really scary!" Kuwabara made a face and held his hands up above his head, wiggling his fingers in an imitation of a monster. "Stay away from them!"

Kira laughed nervously, glad that she was not in Kiseki's shoes at the moment. "Good thing I go to school with two delinquents," She said grinning. "You guys can scare them away if they ever find out and get tired of chasing Kiseki."

"Well then," Kurama spoke up again. "I believe everything is settled. Kiseki," He turned to his classmate, "If you like, I'm free on tuesday after school. I can begin teaching you then."

((Hmmm. Should Hiei try teaching Kira for a little? Kurama would have to convince him. Probably once they get the tournament message. Wanna skip to that?))

Kiseki considered Kurama's suggestion. It would undoubtedly help the fangirls leave her alone if he ignored her at school. Then she could go about her days in at least a semi-normal manner. But yet, she liked the idea of already having a friend at school and she wasn't so eager to turn down that opportunity. Especially when it is someone who knows about a power that she could not divulge to anyone else. She wasn't about to lose that because of some fangirls, psychopathic ones or not.

"Nah. I think you're my first and only friend at that school and I'm not about to give that up because of some crazy fangirls. You're pretty cool and I don't like the idea of being scared off by them. You can just talk to me as much as you want." She stopped, "But don't feel pressured to, if you don't want to."

Yusuke grinned widely, "And that, ladies and gentleman, was how the young cripple's life was ended; by standing up to fangirls."

"Cram it, Yusuke." Kiseki said, unamused.

"You have a weird accent."

"You are such a charmer. You must have all of the girls throwing themselves at you."

The Spirit Detective folded his arms and gave a confident smile, flicking his eyes closed in his pride, "Yeah. It's gift, what can I say?"

The blonde rolled her eyes, but smiled nonetheless.

"Yeah, that will be great. If needed we can go to my house. I think we'll need privacy and my dad's out of town for the next two weeks, so there will be no interruptions."

Yusuke choked, "Two weeks?! All to yourself in that house? Damn! Lucky!"

"Meh, not really. It can be nice, but dad's always gone and it gets pretty lonely sometimes. But a job's a job and I understand. Oh!" Kiseki turned back to Kurama, "Do mind dogs? Because I have a really big one. He's very friendly but he will be enthusiastic when we first come through the door."

((I have an idea on how we can get Hiei to agree to teach Kira. It won't be right away, but after it's decided she's the alternate fighter, then they would HAVE to train and prepare her better, and Hiei would be the best to do that.))

Kurama smiled at Kiskei's response. "I'd be happy to keep you company during the school day." 'And,' he added to himself, 'It might be nice being able to speak with someone who understands my position....'
"Yusuke," Kurama said chidingly to the detective. "I'm sure if Kiseki is willing to stand up to you, she'll be able to handle my, ah... "fanclub" no problem." Kurama gave his classmate a warm, almost affectionate smile before turning back to business. "That sounds excellent," Kurama nodded, agreeing to Kiseki's plan. I'll tell my mother that I volunteered to help tutor you-- I'm sure she'll be pleased."
Kuwabara looked over at Kiseki. "Man, I'd kill to have two weeks by myself. I live with my sister... She's always over my shoulder. I couldn't come over and chill at your house once and a while, could I?" He said this half-jokingly, but there was a certain pleading in his eyes that said otherwise.
"Um," Kira volunteered, "I live by myself. You can come visit me, too, if you like." Kira said this almost hopefully, eager to try and make a friend from school. "Oh, and that'd work when you're going to teach me as well," Kira looked at Kurama. "It just can't get very, uh, destructive. My landlord's kind of strict."

"Sweet!" She grinned widely, "And, if nothing else, I'm sure they won't try anything drastic in front of you."

Craziness aside, Kiseki was very excited to not only have new friends but also to have company fairly often at her house. Sure, her dog Hurricane was friendly enough but it wasn't the same as human company. A smile came across her face at the thought of her large black Newfoundland greeting her new friends. While that breed of dog is fairly lazy and easy going, Hurricane always gets so rambunctious when people come into the house. There were even times before her accident that the huge dog would jump on her and knock her flat on her back, nuzzling her face and giving the occasional lick.

"Sure you can, Kuwabara. As long as you don't mind dogs, you're more than welcome to come over."

"Hey, does that mean I can come over too?" Yusuke piped in.

"Nope." Kiseki replied.

"Hey! Why can they come over and not me?!"

"Relax, Yusuke. I was kidding. Yes, the invitation goes to you as well. To all of you."

"Hehe, party at Kiseki's house!"

"Invitation revoked." Kiseki said easily.

"Whoa, what does that word mean?"

The blonde slapped her palm to her forehead, "It means removed, withdrawn. Really, Yusuke? Japanese isn't even my first language and I have better vocabulary than you? Come on."

"Hey! I don't need no fancy words. I talk with my fists. And my Spirit Gun."

"Whatever makes you happy. You can still come over, but no parties. Or alcohol. Or anything illegal."

"You, gimpy, are no fun."

Yusuke gave a cocksure grin, "You can keep that crappy character. Wolf is mine!"

"Ha! Howl at the moon all you like, Yusuke! I'm gonna whoop your a** with Ike!" Kiseki then added, "You too, Kuwabara. Once I take care of business with Yusuke, you're next on my hit list!"

"As if you can take me on Nemo! Did you miss the fact that Ike is slow as hell?"

"Oh I know he's not fast but he'll knock your lightweight boxer out of the ball park with just a couple of hits!"

Hurricane, who was behind the group, realized he wasn't going to get anymore attention so he walked over to the couch, jumped onto it and flopped over, almost looking as if he were pouting.

Kira had stopped playing after a few rounds of Super Smash Brothers and had gone to join Kurama in the spectator's galley, absentmindedly stroking Hurricane as she watched her new friends' digital characters beat on each other.
By now, the clock read 8:00pm and Kira was growing weary. Kurama, too, it looked like, would be heading home soon.
Rising, his teacup in hand, Kurama cleared his throat slightly. "Kiseki," He said, "I'm afraid I have to head home-- thank you for having me here. I'll see you on Monday, I suppose? Then Tuesday I can come teach you. Would you like me to put this back in the kitchen?" He asked, gesturing to the now empty cup in his hands.
Kira, too, stood, "I think I'll head home, too. It was nice meeting you, Kiseki." She bowed slightly and gathered her shoes from the front door.
"Oh, wow!" Kuwabara blinked, looking up for his third loss in a row, "How'd it get to be 8 oclock? Shizuru's gonna kill me if I don't get home soon. Sorry, Kiseki!" He placed his controller back on the floor, "I gotta jet."

((I'm going to skip forward a couple of weeks or so and then we can get straight to the invitation part. If you don't mind. I'll make it so the school day I write out is the day after the invitations have been given. Then we can bring Hiei with in a couple of posts to train Kira. :3))

Her jaw dropped at the sight of her clock. She couldn't believe it was already eight o clock. Time really does fly when you're having fun. And whooping Yusuke's a**. Of course, the boy had denied that any victory she claimed was because of luck, or because Kuwabara helped her out but she knew he would never admit defeat to her. So she prided herself in the victories she claimed. Teach him to think girls couldn't play video games.

"Ah, it's no problem guys. I'm sorry for keeping you. Time got away from me. Have a good night!."

"Yeah, yeah, I'll go too." Yusuke said dismissively, "And when I come back, I'm gonna whoop your butt again in Smash Bros."

"Again? You never did!" She exclaimed, giving him a playful shove, "Anyways, thanks for coming guys. You all are welcome to come over here whenever you want. Although, a heads up with a text message or phone call would be nice first."

They all said their farewells and went their own way. Tired, but happy, Kiseki went to her room and played some more video games before finally going to sleep, Hurricane curled up on the bed with her. Yusuke, roamed around the streets for a while, searching for a fight. When he could not find what he wanted, he went home as well, and fell asleep.

*three weeks later*

The day was fresh, new and bright, reminding Kiseki that she had yet another school day to attend. She rose a bit sluggishly, as she always does in the morning and took Hurricane for a walk so he could relieve himself, not at all caring that she was still in her pajamas. After bringing him back in, she begun her morning routine. Soon she was fresh-faced, clean and ready to go, even if she really didn't want to go to school today.

She rode the bus and was surprised to see that Kurama was not at the front, like he normally was. Even his fangirls were prowling around the area, searching for the red-headed demon that they were so enamored with. Kiseki thought it strange but decided to just not worry about it. He might be late or wanted somewhere peaceful to stay. She had no classes with him so she would have to wait until lunchtime to go track him down. Once lunch period did roll around, she found herself struggling up the stairs to the school roof. Kiseki knew that Kurama liked to eat up there sometimes as it gave him peace and quiet. As expected, he was up on the roof, and his face was one immersed deep in thought.

"I thought you'd be up here. You ok? You look distracted."

****

Yusuke did go to school that day, even if he did not want to. His main reason was that he wanted to talk to Kuwabara as soon as he could, tell him about the Dark Tournament that would be rolling around in four months. He still could not believe how strong Toguro was and it almost made him feel childish for thinking that he and Kuwabara had actually beaten him a month ago.

'Damn it. I guess....I guess I'm gonna have to go back to the old bat again. There's no way I can beat that guy on my own. Maybe if there were a hundred of me but definitely not just one.'

He growled and leaned back in his seat. It really chapped his hide that Toguro was completely out of his league. He even wondered if he was the strongest there is. How the hell was he supposed to beat the strongest. He probably has balls of steel too. That hardly seemed fair. Yeah, he was definitely going to have to get his a** whooped by the old lady to even stand a chance.

Kurama had bought lunch from the cafeteria today and taken it up to the roof for some time to think. His bun lay beside him, still wrapped an untouched, Kurama standing, staring out across the city skyline, lost in through, not even looking up with Kiseki stepped foot onto the roof. He had known that he and Hiei were unwanted in the demon world now, ever since allying themselves with Yusuke and, thus, Spirit World. Still, he hadn't expected a personal invitation to the Dark Tournament. That seemed a little extreme, even for demons. Still, he dare not turn down the mandatory invite that had been extended to him.
"Oh," Kurama looked up finally only when Kiseki spoke. "Hello, Melody." He spoke somberly, in a subdued manner. Not only was his mind somewhere else, Kurama's face was creased in worry. "Have you had a good day so far?"

Kuwabara was still shaken from the scene he had witnessed yesterday. Perhaps it was arrogant of him to really believe that he and Yusuke had managed to kill Tuguro, but... Kuwabara shuddered. To see him level and entire parking garage so easily. He had really been holding back during the fight with he and Yusuke.... And now... The two of them had to go off and fight a horde of demons just to have another chance of facing him? Kuwabara put his head in his hands. The bell rang, signalling the begining of lunch. Immediately and without thought, Kuwabara gathered his books and made his way back to the homeroom that he shared with Yusuke, eager to see if Yusuke had any ideas.

Kira nearly jumped up when the bell rang, hurriedly gathering her books and bento box together and darting out of her classroom to go visit Yusuke and Kuwabara. Turning into the boys' classroom, she spotted them, both looking extremely tense next to each other. Kira slowed down, her smile fading. There was something wrong... "Yusuke?" She asked quietly. "Is everything okay?"

Kiseki had suspected that something was distracting Kurama before but now she was absolutely certain. The demon was always aware of his surroundings and the fact that not only did he not notice that she had come to the roof (which was saying something since she has to limp) but he seemed to have missed her question all together. Either that or he was trying to skirt around her question.

"Yeah, things have been ok. It seems like not so much for you. Are you ok? you are very distracted."

***

Yusuke thought, looking to his friend for a moment, as if he would have the answer on whether he should tell Kira or not. Telling her may put her in danger and he didn't want that. Then again, she already knows about demons and the like and may already know about the Dark Tournament too. The Spirit Detective debated for a moment but then decided to tell her.

"Well....Kuwabara and I have been given invitations to something called the Dark Tournament. And things will be nasty. And if we turn down the invitations, it will be even worse. We're gonna have to fight against an extremely strong demon."

He still couldn't believe how incredibly powerful Toguro was and he hoped that Genkai's training would be enough.

A frown quirked on her lips. A reputation that apparently made people want to kill them. Then again, Kurama and Hiei had been helping Yusuke in his job as Spirit Detective and that typically involved putting demons out of commission. Kiseki figured it would make sense for that kind of work to ruffle some feathers. Although she had to admit that it seemed like it would be much easier to just kill them instead of forcing them into a Tournament where they may or may not be killed. Do the higher ups have that much confidence in the other competitors? This made her nervous.

"Right. So when are we shipping off? And yes, by 'we' I'm including me."

****

"Hell I would normally say no, but you're a demon too and we do need an alternate. Which means you can't fight unless someone dies and I don't plan on anybody getting put in the ground. Genkai's taking care of the fifth member of our team so sure, we'll use you as the alternate."

Yusuke leaned back taking a huge bite out of his sandwich. He couldn't help but think that maybe he should have told her no, but he had the feeling that she would have tried to come along anyways. If she was gonna come along, might as well have a back up. Hell, they may even need it.

"But let me tell you, Sparky, this ain't gonna be no picnic. You're gonna have to train your a** off like the rest of us. We all have a long way to go before we can kick some a** in this tournament."

Kurama's eyebrows disappeared into his hairline. "Excuse me?" He said mildly. "Our /team/ is leaving in three months. /You/ are staying in the human world and continuing to go to school."

--

Kira nodded. While she had never met Genkai she knew that the woman was Yusuke's teacher, and apparently a damned good one at that. If Yusuke and the others trusted her to pick out a suitable fifth fighter for the Urameshi Team, thn so did she. "That's probably better.... Not like any of you are actually gonna die...." She tried to smile, "You're too tough for that...." Kira lifted herself up onto one of the desks to sit opposite of Yusuke and Kuwabara, "When is the Tournament taking place?"

"Exactly three months from yesterday," Kuwabara grunted. "We've got that much time to get strong enough to kick Tuguro's a**.... We're gonna need some serious training."
Kira nodded.

"The hell I am! I'm coming along! I refuse to be left behind while my friends are fighting in a deadly tournament! If anything you'll NEED me along! Come one, I can patch you guys together between rounds. You know I've improved a lot!"

She definitely had and it only took her cutting herself open several hundred times or so while she struggled to learn more. After she had advanced to the point where she could heal deep but non life threatening wounds, Kurama surprised her. During one of their training sessions, he had stabbed himself in the stomach with a knife and told her to heal him. Kiseki had succeeded but he had failed to tell her that if she couldn't heal him, he would have been just fine. As it had been, she genuinely felt that if she didn't succeed then he would have died and nearly passed out after healing him.

"Hey, either you let me come along or I'm black mailing Yusuke." Kiseki smiled deviously, "Being his friend has made me privy to some information that he would not like for Keiko to know. Like a certain stack of dirty magazines that he has in his room. And other bits of info. You're not keeping me out of this one, I'm coming."

****

"Looks like we're gonna have to talk with Kurama after school again. If someone's gonna train you, Hiei might be a good one. The little midget can be a pain in the a** but he is a psychic and could probably whip you into shape. But I have no idea where to find him but Kurama probably could track him down." Yusuke grinned wryly, "Whaddya say, Sparky? Ready to get your a** handed to you?"

((Ahaha, that seems like a very Kurama-ish thing to do. xD))

Kurama's lips curled upward in an exasperated smile. Kiseki did have a point. If he, Yusuke, and the others were going to go participate in a deadly martial arts tournament, having a healer on their side was an extremely appealing idea. And Kiseki was right, in the past three weeks she had exceeded Kurama's expectations in mastering her abilities, so long as she was offered the right motivation. Yusuke's relationship with his almost-girlfriend held hardly any leverage above Kurama. While he cared for Yusuke and Keiko, he was not about to make a foolish decision simply based on the idea that the two of them might be soon engaged in another fight. There was, however, still Kiseki's own safety to worry about. She would not be the only human at the tournament, discounting Kurama and his team, but she would definitely be in the minority. However, Botan would also be joining their group, so as long as the two girl stuck together and did not wander off by themselves...
Kurama sighed after a moment and nodded. "Very well," He said carefully, "I can see I'm in no position to stop you. I implore you, however, to be careful. Demon World can be much more brutal than you can imagine."
--

Kira grinned, "Well see about that!" She nodded, eager for the idea of beginning her training again under the watchful eye of a new tutor and at double the pace. While she had yet to meet Hiei, she had heard stories about him, including many exaggerated ones from Kuwabara. While he did not seem the friendliest person she would ever meet, Kira had no doubt that Hiei would help get her into shape for the tournament and, hopefully, she could do the same for him.

((What seems like a Kurama-ish thing to do? Oh, btw, no harm done but the blackmail was intended for yusuke to take her a long if kurama did not agree to it. xD))

When Kurama agreed to her coming along, Kiseki could not stop the large grin that came over her face. Now feeling very excited, and temporarily forgetting about the fact that she would be in the company of vicious demons, and punched the air with a victorious fist.

"Yes!" Then she paused, "Wait, does that mean that you're going to be drilling me even harder in training? I'm still a bit miffed at you for stabbing yourself in the stomach and then conveniently 'forgetting' to tell me that it wouldn't kill you."

If Kurama was going to train her even harder, Kiseki had to admit she would not be looking forward to it. She had discovered that the fox demon was almost brutal in his training, making her work for two to three hours straight, constantly pushing the limits of her pitiful Spirit Energy pool. While she would admit that it helped it grow bigger, it was easily the most exhausting thing she'd done in her life and when it came to the healing or meditating, Kurama was not satisfied with anything short of precision and perfection.

****

"Got any last requests, Sparky? If we can get Hiei to agree, he will definitely be brutal."

Yusuke had no doubt in his mind that the demon would be brutal. If the way he spoke to them in general was not a hint then his cut throat fighting style was. Hiei had little to no tolerance for weakness and if Kira started training with him, she was definitely going to be feeling the pain for days. Of course, no one topped the old hag and her extreme but effective way of training people. Yusuke sometimes FELT tired after just thinking about her methods.

"If it helps ya feel any better we'll all be in pain. Hehe, maybe I can give you some pointers, teach ya some good stuff with out kicking your a** too hard." He gave a cocky smirk.

((Haha I think gaia ate my reply because I did respond to this. xD and yes we made him about 5'4))

Yusuke chuckled a bit. Same old Hiei, chip off the old block. He rolled a shoulder before crossing his arms and looking down at the demon, "Hey there Hiei, still cheerful as ever."

The demon flicked his red gaze over to Yusuke, his eyes surveying him critically before letting a smirk split his mouth, "Detective, I do so hope you've been working on your skills. I don't want to have to carry everyone on the team. Especially since Kurama deems it necessary to bring along a little girl and a cripple."

His gaze flicked briefly over to the two girls in question, completely ignoring Kira's greeting. Kiseki, however, felt her anger flare at the black-haired demon's comment. There goes the cripple name again! She opened her mouth to give a biting retort but Yusuke spoke before she could.

"I'd be careful about what you say to this one, Hiei," the Detective laughed, hooking his arm around her neck and ruffling her hair, "She'll rip you a new one if you're not careful."

Kiseki gave a cry of protest and slapped him on the arm but Yusuke continued to ruffle her hair until he let her go when he was ready. To which she promptly shoved him, causing him to laugh but do nothing in retaliation.

"Her? Injure me? Come now, Detective, surely you can come up with better jokes than that."

A growl rumbled in the back of her throat, "Well, since you seem SO eager to know who I am, I'm Kiseki. And I know who I'm NOT healing at the Tournament."

"I will not need your ridiculous healing. Now hush, woman."

Kiseki fumed at his dismissive and superior attitude towards her and clenched her fist. She wanted so badly to just punch him as hard as she possibly could, but considering the kind of training Yusuke went through and the fact that he beat Hiei, Kiseki was almost positive that her own punches would not hurt the dark-haired demon in the slightest. She suspected that even with the strength of twenty of her would not be enough to so much bruise the apparition.

"I'll come over there." She promised in a low growl.

"Oh?" He cocked a brow, "I tremble at the threat, and tell me, what will you do once you do come over here?"

She fell silent when she realized that she had no idea what she COULD even do against him. Nothing effective, that's for sure.

"...I don't know but I'll figure something out!"

"....I'm absolutely terrified...."

Kiseki glared but said nothing more.

((Oh gaia. Nommer of messages. Well I'm glad you're still interested! Thought you may have left too. xD))

Kuwabara hung in back of the group, peering down on them from his taller persepective. As the cluster of people exchanging greetings, some more enthusiastic than others, Kuwabara listened intently, hoping that Hiei would be a little more courteous to girls at least.

Kira huffed as Hiei's eyes simply passed over her and her greeting went unacknowledged. Although she frowned at Hiei and furrowed her brow slightly, she did not comment on the demon's lack of social skills in thanks partly to Yusuke's intervention of Kiseki's own retort.

"Gee, Hiei," Kuwabara muttered as he surveyed the scene. "You sure have a way with girls, huh?"

"Hiei," Kurama spoke before the shorter demon could spit back a response, "Kiseki and Kira /will/ be accompanying us tho the tournament," A kind of firm finality in his voice. "Kira, in fact, has volunteered to be our alternate fighter, lest a grim fate befall any of us."

Yusuke had to admit that he was a bit relieved that Kiseki decided to not try something against Hiei. While he had no doubt that he could restrain her easily, he wasn't entirely certain how the demon would react to a possible aggressive move. Controlling Hiei would be significantly more difficult than controlling Kiseki.

Hiei flicked his red eyes over to Kuwabara and then smirked at him, giving a mocking laugh, "Better than you, oaf." He then turned to Kurama, "And doubtless she'll be replacing this imbecile here."

Yusuke laughed, "Or she could be replacing you."

"I will kill you." Hiei glared, "So Kurama why are you here? What do you want with me?"

Kuwabara clenched his fists and teeth at Hiei's response. "Ha!" He laughed. "You wish! I don't see them falling all over you! Besides, I don't need to be good with /girls/-- I just need to know that sweet Yukina is there for me-- which she is! So there!"

Kurama groaned inwardly. Of course. He should have known Yukina's name would surface sooner or later. Bringing up Hiei's sister's name was not a good way to get the fire demon to preform any favors for the team. "Considering Kira's lack of combat experience," Kurama cut in, "We figured the best way to have her prep for the tournament was to mentor under one of use since Genkai will no doubt be bus with Yusuke. We were hoping, Hiei, that you might take that task upon yourself."

Kira looked between Kurama, Kuwabara, and Hiei. Was it her, or had the tension around the latter of the three risen significantly? Kuwabara hadn't been kidding about Hiei's distaste for the boy, nor about the demon's attitude issue. She couldn't exactly say she was looking forward to training under Hiei, assuming that he agreed to it anyways. Kiseki, she was sure, had the better deal.

"Yet you don't see them running from me as I'm sure that other women doubtlessly do to you."

Hiei grew very still at the mention of Yukina's name and his hand suddenly itched to grasp his sword and cut the buffoon down to size but luckily for Kuwabara Kurama spoke up first. It irked him as he had wanted to give the tall high school student what he deserved and a growl rumbled in his throat.

"Why should I be designated babysitter? Have someone else do it."

Kiseki was discovering that she was liking Hiei less by the minute and each time she's surprised about how her approval of him keeps dropping. If this was beneficial for the team, why should he complain? Wouldn't it be in their best interest for him to teach her? The healer suddenly felt very sorry for Kira for her possible fate of having Hiei as her teacher. Kurama, while very frustrating and over overwhelmingly persistent when it comes to getting perfection out of her, he was never so harsh and abrasive like this new demon.

Yusuke spoke up, "Aw come on, Hiei, you're the best one for the job. It's supposed to be a compliment, three-eyes."

Kiseki did NOT want to know why Yusuke had deemed to give Hiei that nickname.

His eyes seemed to glow in the fading light and his lip curled at Kira's attempt at an attack. Obviously it had failed miserably. It appeared that he was going to have to keep up with his original method of teaching. Sucking his teeth in annoyance, he drew his blade again.

"Not good enough!" he growled, charging forward.

He slashed at her again, trying to force her into a chase again. It seemed that the best way for her to learn was to have him chasing and cutting her. Some would call his methods harsh but it was a harsh world and only the strong survived. You either learned or you died. And Kira needed to learn if she was going to the Dark Tournament.

****

Kiseki felt the blood drain from her face. Someone else? Who else did he plan for her to practice on? If she couldn't bring herself to do this technique on him, a hardened demon, she most certainly didn't think she could bring herself to do it on them. Or even a kitten like Kurama had joked about it. She knew she had to learn this technique to defend herself but she was beginning to wonder if she really wanted to go at all if this is what it took to learn it.

Her blue eyes cast downwards, sad that she had disappointed Kurama. But she couldn't let him get her another target. That would probably yield the same results; her being unable to do it. But how else could she practice? Kiseki studied her fingers as they fidgeted with each other before her eyes widened with an idea.

"Wait. You don't need to go find another person."

She didn't need her pinky that much, right? So if this all goes, wrong, what's one less pinky? She settled her fingers over her left little finger, blue eyes glinting in determination. Kiseki set her jaw and clenched her teeth for what was to come.

'This is going to hurt...' She thought to herself.

Then she activated her energy, sending it tearing through the walls of every cell with in her finger. Agony raced through her as her Spirit energy even sliced through arteries, cartilage, nerves and flesh, a stream of english curses falling out of her mouth. It was probably the most painful thing she had experienced. When she was done, her pinky was black. It was clumsily done as there were still patches of unaffected flesh, but never the less, her pinky was over all, necrotized.

Laughing faintly, she showed him, "I did it. No other practice dummy necessary..."

Good god, this hurt. Did she feel faint? Kiseki was pretty sure she felt faint. The blood had drained out of her face but regardless, she had accomplished the technique. With a trembling hand, she lightly settled her fingers over the dead pinky, soft blue glowing around them. Smoothly, she sloughed off the dead flesh and it plopped to the ground wetly, leaving half of her little finger nothing but bone. She focused her energy again and speed up the cellular division, watching as flesh, blood vessels and nerves crawled back over her pinky until it was smooth and unblemished..

"Tada?" She paused, "I-I think I need some water, I don't feel so hot...."

She raised a trembling hand to her head as she felt her whole body go weak.

((XD I was actually going to suggest she use herself as a test dummy if we had backed ourselves into a corner there. Sweet!))

"I, uh, hang on!" Kira shouted, ducking out of the way as Hiei aimed for her again. Scrambling up, Kira's boots caught the ground beneath her as she started to flee again. A second wind seemed to have come over her, and Kira was fiddling with her energy as she ran, trying to manipulate it into another blast. In her hands was a small blob of yellowish energy that would flicker white every once and a while before going back to its original form. As she ran, Kira would look over her shoulder every once and a while to try and pinpoint Hiei.

---

Kurama frowned as he watched Kiseki fidgeting with her hands. How could he convince her that really, he /wanted/ her to practice on him. There was no one else Kurama was willing to put in danger in case something /did/ go wrong and, if they did, he was sure he could figure a way to fix it, so long as it was on himself.
About to give convincing his student another go, Kurama was interrupted as an idea struck the blonde girl.

He realized what she was going to do a second before she clenched her teeth.

"Kiseki, wait--!" He reached forward, but she was already directing energy towards her smallest finger. Kurama let out an internal groan. But, the process already in motion, he simply sat back on his heels and hoped that Kiseki was as talented as she was determined.

Kurama watched as the girl's tissue purpled, blackened, and shriveled. Even through his worry, Kurama couldn't help but be impressed. With Kiseki's first time preforming her necrosis technique, she had managed to get it down pretty well, and on herself no less. When Kiseki had finished both destroying and repairing her cells, Kurama was ready to catch her, should she become dizzy. "I see that," Kurama said with a small smile as he held her by the shoulders. "Very nice job."

Kurama stood, supporting Kiseki as he did so. "I can get you some water," He said, "Can you make it to your bed?"

Hiei felt his lips twitch when at last she managed to harness her energy into her her hands. He pushed himself harder, drawing even closer to her with ease. He wanted her to attack him so he could see the strength that she possessed. Or lack there of. He drew his blade again, the steel singing it's cruel song into the evening.

"Come on, woman! Attack me!"

****

She felt incredibly weak and dizzy but over all satisfied. Kiseki had successfully performed the technique on herself and that was something that made her proud. Even if she had to go through agonizing pain to make it happen. Hurricane, who was standing next to her whined and nudged her leg, as if to check to see if she was ok.

"I-I'm ok. I just need to sit down."

The blonde pulled away from Kurama's supporting hands and moved to head over to the couch. Her knees buckled and she nearly collapsed right there but she managed to cling to the wall for support. She stood there for a moment, swaying, blinking hard to clear the dizziness.

"Dammit..." She cursed under her breath then added louder, "Don't worry. I got this."

"I-- am-- /trying/!" Kira hissed through her teeth as her energy flashed white once more. She looked up to see Hiei's blade headed towards her midriff, too close for her to doge and, with her arm already sliced up from before, difficult to block. She didn't think Hiei would actually slice her in half for the sake of training, but she wasn't very keen to tests the small demon's restraint. She needed something to block his attack with. Focusing in on solidifying her ki, Kira sent all her concentration down to her palms until... /clang/.
The sound of steel hitting against something most definitely solid echoed through the trees. In front of Kira's hands was a crude rendition of something that looked like a glass knife; a clear, prism-like object that held a faint glow to it. Kira looked at her creation for a split second before grasping it tightly in her hand, aiming for Hiei's chest as she took a swipe.

Kira's movements were slow compared to Hiei's, unpracticed. But her attack had a driving force behind it nonetheless, as if she were actually trying to imbed her knife into the demon's chest cavity.
--

Kurama nodded and let Kiseki pull herself from his grasp. He still hovered over her, incase the girl was likely to faint again, but he allowed her to stand on her own two feet, depending on her own will and the wall to support herself.

He had to say, that was perhaps one of the things he liked best about Kiseki. She was like Yusuke in a way, and he could see easily how the two got along. Unlike most of the human girls Kurama knew, Kiseki was independent, determined, and more than a little stubborn, which, he noted, were all very good qualities when attempting to master a new skill.

Kurama waited patiently to make sure that Kiseki could indeed make it over to the couch without collapsing before he went to fetch her her requested drink.

Red eyes widened marginally in response to the psychic knife, crafted crudely out of energy, glowing dimly and tinged with an indistinguishable color. It was clumsily made, but it was definitely there and solid. The corner of his mouth quirked at this new development, eyes glinting oddly.

"Better."

Suddenly he was sliding to the left at her attack and seized her wrist in his tight grasp and used her momentum against her, pushing her front into a tree, her right arm twisted behind her back, his sword at her throat again.

"Not good enough."

He released her and leapt back, knowing she would likely try to attack him again with her newly discovered attack.

****

It took a considerable amount will power and strength to make it to the couch. When she finally reached it, she let herself collapse onto the sofa, heavily, relishing in the plush cushions that greeted her. Kiseki felt much better when she sat down and knew that once she got some water in her. She accepted the glass gratefully and drank deeply of it.

"Thanks. Good god, I'm glad I did that. That hurt like a b***h. I don't think I would have liked inflicting that kind of pain upon one of my buddies."

"Go now." He ordered.

Hiei gave her a little longer this time and then tore after her in the moonlight. Things were quiet and he made no sound. After about thirty minutes Kira reached the temple with a few more cuts and bruises but over all intact.

"We will do this tomorrow. I'd advise you get some rest."

****

"Doesn't change the fact that you seem to be fond of inflicting injuries upon yourself." A sly grin flashed at him then, "Am I seeing one of the many secrets of Kurama? You're a masochist?"

She bent back over the wound, her bangs falling in her face before setting her energy to work, accelerating the bone growth. When she was done she winced. The bones had grown back but not correctly. If they were to be fixed they would have to be broken again. She cringed.

"Sorry, I didn't do a good job...."

Kira reached the temple sweating, cut, and bruised. After Hiei had left, she collapsed on the steps, breathing hard. A couple minutes of rest and Kira brought herself to her feet, looking around. This was only the second time she had been here, and it was much more foreboding in the dark. Kira hesitated. She could always ask to stay here for the night, but.. no. Not with Yusuke training with Genkai like he was. Aching and bleeding, Kira began her trek home.
--

Kurama gave Kiseki a mysterious, almost teasing smile, "Masochist is a relative term." Then, turning his attention to his own hand as Kiseki began to heal it, he waited in silence until she was done.

"It's all right," He said slowly as Kiseki pulled back and he raised his hand to eye-level to assess his incorrectly healed fingers. Kiseki had gone a little over-beard with the cell growth and Kurama found that he could no longer bend at his joints. He gave Kiseki a quick look, she seemed to understand that, in order for this to be fixed, Kurama would have to snap his bones a second time. "Breathe a little bit," he advised her, "Bone tissue should only require a little bit more energy to heal." Then, in a quick motion, Kurama broke the same to bones again at with precision.

Hiei watched her go, as she was still bleeding in various places. A smirk quirked his lips, knowing that she would be very sore tomorrow. Kira maybe a demon but after all of the work he put her through, there was no way that she wasn't. Before she vanished out of sight, he called out to her.

"Woman, be here at dawn tomorrow morning. And you better hope you're sore. Because if you're not it will be much worse."

****

At his response she opened her mouth several times and then closed it before she finally spoke, "You enjoy doing that don't you?"

She set to work again, feeling her way around the break with her energy before taking a deep breath like Kurama told her and focused on the injury. Then she accelerated the cellular division and this time, she healed the bones correctly. A triumphant grin split across her face.

"I did it!" She exclaimed.

Kurama smiled as he once again lifted his hand to inspect Kiseki's work. "Very nice job," Kurama said as he flexed his fingers a few times. His finger felt a little sore, probably from being so rapidly broken and then healed twice, but other than that, Kurama felt fine and his joints worked perfectly.

Bringing his hands back to his lap, Kurama sat forward a little and looked at Kiseki. "How are you feeling?" He inquired, eyes locked on hers.

"Alright." she answered, "A bit tired but fine."

After spending at least another hour training with Kurama they finally ended the session and he went home for the night, leaving her to sleep. Three months later it found them waiting for the ship to sail into the dock. Surrounded by apparitions. She felt tense, uneasy but not very frightened since Kurama, Hiei and Kuwabara were near her. She was mostly comforted by the red-headed demon's presence since she felt the most at ease with him. Although she'd feel even better once Yusuke got there.

"There's....a lot more apparitions here than I thought....." she muttered to Kurama.
