A machine lifeform is fascinated by old human records. Bring him artifacts of human civilization.
You brought him records describing how important predation and reproduction were to human survival. He pondered why these important acts were simultaneously viewed as sinful.
You handed over a famous human book. He read it ten times, but couldn't make sense of what attraction there could be to such a thing.
The machine lifeform proclaimed, "Eureka! It seems the answer was in front of me all along! I am simply incapable of comprehending anything―about humanity OR the world in general! Ah, how wonderful it is to live in a world swaddled in mystery!"
A man traveling on a ship in Seafront wants to make a medication that will prevent seasickness. Buy him a mandrake leaf from the strange-thing store in Facade.
You obtained the mandrake leaf. The shopkeeper at the strange-thing store sure acted funny when you asked for it...
Your client is still working on his seasickness cure. Bring him some toad oil from Two Brothers Weaponry at the Junk Heap.
With a nudge and a wink, the younger brother sold you some toad oil.
The client wound up going into the medicine business. It seems his latest attempt accidentally resulted in making an "energizer" of sorts. His wife is thrilled.
The tavern keeper in Seafront needs ingredients for a new recipe. Collect ten giant catfish and ten bags of rice.
You collected the ingredients. Bring them back to the client.
You gave the ingredients to the client.
It seems he can't clean the slimy, smelly fish. Can a restaurant like this survive in a coastal town?
The lighthouse lady wants to leave town, and the postman has asked you to convince her otherwise. Go pay her a visit.
The old lady is afflicted with the Black Scrawl. Visit the postman to make her last request come true.
The postman is acting strange. Return to the post office.
The postman apparently has something to show you. Search for it inside the post office's storeroom.
The letters to the old lady were fakes written by the postman. How should you explain this to the woman?

About Me

User Image
Hi! I'm Venom!

I joined Gaia sometime in 2005, so I may be just a little jaded. I like to come on here occasionally to relive the traditional online forum experience as was the style at the time. No votes, no trending. Just good old chronological posts.

Back in my teens before the advent of social media I made a lot of friends through online forums. One of them invited me to join Gaia, and I spent years making all kinds of posts on here attempting to accumulate precious virtual gold and make the stupid number go up. I think I mailed some dollarydoos to Gaia's HQ once or twice for a couple monthly items (not even a store-bought gift card, lol), but beyond that I've mostly used whatever they've given us on here to earn my way towards more inventory. I used to play a lot of zOMG! when it was first released, but I haven't touched it since then and like many other things it's probably broken, half functioning, or desolate these days.

Towns was where it was at for me, man. I managed to endure countless hours of that wretched short BGM loop somehow. I met a lot of good people there, but I think the vast majority of them have since moved on with their lives. I kind of miss all the people jostling the local plant life and rocks back when there was no cooldown on spamming the sit button.

Other than that I spent most of my time hiding in one semi-popular guild and a couple more private ones where I think I made my closest friends on here.

I like to yap about stuff, so feel free to yap back if you see me around. I promise I'm non-confrontational!

Video Games

User Image
I love video games, and I love talking about video games.

NieR is the series I recommend to everyone. The music is always great and I love all of the character banter. It's one of the few series I'll go out of my way to try and finish every side quest in because they do so much more world building than the main story, and I love how humorous or tragic each one ends up being. NieR:Automata definitely plays the best and has a much more broad battle system, but NieR Replicant is my absolute favorite of the two in regards to story and characters. Grimoire Weiss is the sassiest piece of s**t and I love him.

I play an unhealthy amount of Splatoon. I guess everyone has their preferred online shooter so that's the one I ended up sticking to. My fondest memories probably live back in Splatoon 2. It has that Pokémon Gold/Silver thing going for it where the original concept was good, but the next one was better in almost every possible way. Right now in Splatoon 3 my main weapons are Splatana Wiper, Zink Mini Splatling, and Bamboozler 14 Mk I.

I can't quite remember exactly when I started playing, but Ragnarok Online took over my life for a good while in my teens. I find my way back to it every handful of years, but I think what really did it for me was the social aspect of it all because now when I try and play it I hit a point where I've had my fill and the urge is gone. Despite that, I still listen to the soundtrack pretty frequently. I've usually gravitated towards the archer and thief class trees. The last time I played the server I was on had 4th classes implemented and me and my friends were going nuts trying all their ridiculous new skills. It was the most fun I had playing in a while.

Some other stuff I like includes:

- The Legend of Zelda
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- Metroid
- Pokémon
- Pokémon Puzzle League
- Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
- Golden Sun
- Super Smash Bros.
- Animal Crossing
- Left 4 Dead
- Streets of Rage 2
- Atelier Ryza

Yes, I know the list outs that I grew up with only Nintendo consoles. The proper gaming PC didn't happen until like 2012. :P

Anime

User Image
I've been watching a lot more anime in my 20s and 30s. Despite growing up almost exclusively with animation I didn't really get into it before that. I remember trying out The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya back when it was still recent, but it didn't really blow me away. Once Crunchyroll was a more prominent force in the streaming space I gave anime another shot and watched Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! right after it finished airing. That clearly did it for me because now I've got enough anime figures that I had to buy a whole-a** bookshelf for them to live on.

I mostly gravitate towards shows that revolve around comedy or romantic comedy, but I'll watch other genres as well if the show is interesting. That being said, I'm not picky and I'll usually watch just about anything since anime is my lunch break guilty pleasure.

Some of my absolute favorites include:

- KonoSuba
- Bocchi the Rock!
- Working!
- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Part 4 in particular)
- Assassination Classroom
- Aharen-san wa Hakarenai
- Laid-Back Camp

And some others I've enjoyed are:

- Kaguya-sama: Love Is War
- SPY x FAMILY
- Toradora!
- Kuroko's Basketball
- Parasyte
- Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!
- Haikyu!!
- My Hero Academia
- Pop Team Epic
- Charlotte
- Fruits Basket
- Romantic Killer
- Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
- Yu Yu Hakusho

As a byproduct of watching just about anything I've seen some real garbage, too. I'm pretty forgiving of what I watch, but there are some series I've gotten to the end of and I'm just like, "Man, that was lousy." I'm not gonna namedrop anything, but there's two really popular ones you could probably guess if you had a go at it.

TV Shows

User Image
I grew up watching The Simpsons. It's the show that defined a generation. I've read online that seasons 3-8 are the ones to watch, but when I did my first streaming run of it I honestly thought seasons 2 and 9 also had plenty of good episodes. Season 2 is *okay* at worst. Nothing like going back and enduring the first season.

It's hard to pick a favorite character, but it's probably Krusty the Clown. There's so many episodes where they just inject him into a scene that could just as easily not feature him and he steals the show every time.

King of the Hill is also one of my favorites. It really is just a Texas slice of life anime. I don't have encyclopedic knowledge of Arlen like I do Springfield, but every season absolutely has a handful of classic episodes.

Back when I watched cartoons after school I watched a lot of Animaniacs, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Static Shock, Batman Beyond, and Xiaolin Showdown. Justice League was a bit later, as was Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. I think some of those are definitely anime masquerading as cartoons, but I figured they were more at home in this section. :P

Other than those, I've watched a few sitcoms here and there.

- Parks and Recreation
- Seinfeld
- What We Do in the Shadows
- That '70s Show
- Malcolm in the Middle
- Metalocalypse

Music

User Image
I have a hard time latching on to new artists. A lot of what's popular doesn't really land in any genres I'm interested in, so I've mostly resigned to becoming one of those geezers who just listens to my geezer music.

I mostly listen to rock and metal. My favorite band is System of a Down. It's a shame they rarely work on music together anymore due to internal squabbles, but the albums we did get are all pretty solid.

- AC/DC
- Aerosmith
- Alice Cooper
- Black Sabbath
- Buckethead
- Fear Before the March of Flames
- Flight of the Conchords
- Gorillaz
- King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
- Korn
- Led Zeppelin
- Muse
- Rage Against the Machine
- Slipknot
- The White Stripes (and just about anything Jack White is in)

Web Design

User Image
One unique benefit of my adolescence taking place in the 2000s is that the sites you could hang out on were all kind of like this where they offered you a profile page you could customize. I ended up learning HTML and CSS as a byproduct of that. After I graduated from high school I also learned JavaScript.

I worked for a web-based company for about a decade. I started in tech support, where lots of customers needed technical help but so many more would be asking how to make certain customizations to their sites. It wasn't really my job to code for them, but when we released a new version of our software and everything worked differently I wasn't left with much choice. But I'm thankful for all the experience I got doing that because it was not only good practice, but I also learned how to code things correctly. You can slap together whatever HTML and CSS you want and call it a day, but there's a huge difference between stuff that just works and stuff that's optimal.

I've also done some backend development work for the same company. I learned some programming languages as a result, and also learned how to use the React JS library which I still use to this day whenever I want to make a web-based interface.

Profile Design

User Image
My profile is modeled after the NieR:Automata menu screen.

This is actually the second version of this profile I've made! The previous version was back in 2018. It worked about the same, but had only 3 sections and collapsed when you weren't hovering over one. Most of the containers were more or less your standard Gaia profile panels either stacked or side-by-side, but they were colored the same as the ones you see before you now.

Now that browsers support a ton of new CSS pseudo-element selectors I went absolutely insane redesigning it and wanted to do the concept justice. All 7 of the tabs from the game are here, and most look at least somewhat how they're meant to. I improvised a bit in the Weapons tab since I couldn't really think of anything Gaia-related to put there that would've corresponded to what usually resides there in-game.

There might be some slowdown when moving your mouse cursor through items in the wishlist depending on how many are on the page. I debugged it for a long time, but couldn't quite figure out how to fix that... At least it's not slowing down the other tabs anymore like it was when I first noticed it. A win's a win. I think I'm really pushing the limit on what can be done on a Gaia profile.

I dunno if I'd make one this complex again. This was a real pain in the butt and took forever, and it's borderline impossible to maintain or recreate without the use of a preprocessor like LESS. I also had to rethink my approach halfway through because my profile panels were no longer saving and I had already managed to hit the character limit in the database for the profile CSS (I went to look at it and it got truncated!). So now the CSS is roughly 2/3 the size it was originally.

One of my weaknesses is I'm not very good at conceptualizing things from scratch. But inversely, one of my strengths is that I'm good enough at what I do that if I'm given a visual example I can recreate it pretty well. That's how this profile came to be.

If you like what you see go check out Seishiro Niko's profile. I worked on that one, too! I had a ton of fun making it, and it inspired me to come back and redo mine.
