I agree that another company would have come in and essentially made their "mario 64" so to speak. But you have to recognize history. You can't say "well if Edison didn't essentially invent the light bulb someone else would have." Yeah someone else might have, but it's possible nobody would have for decades, and imagine how far behind we'd be today. The light bulb is an extreme example, but the principle is the same. I wont go and say Mario 64 is the best game ever made, or that it made nintendo 64 (although it kinda sorta did), but the fact is developers did see it and think about making their own variations of 3d platforming. Maybe some didn't, but surely some did.
