They aren't so bad. It's rewarding to see them finally dive into a book and start peeling away at literary depths. They get so excited when they make their first meaningful observation of a texts deeper meaning.
I can see how that would be very fulfilling. So many times, I want to shove books into people's faces until they realize how deep and amazing it is... <3
English teacher then, I presume? That was always my favorite subject. I was going to major in English/Writing, actually, but...well. Then I dropped out of university.
English Lit it is. It was tough, but my graduation will be in December.
Congrats! (=
So, Mr. English Lit...I'm sure you get asked a lot. What are you into? Any personal favorite styles/authors/anything?
My favorite poet is Sappho, her words seem so heartfelt it can break your spirit. I love Shakespeare to an extent, Falstaff being my favorite character. He is from The Henriad, a history, and it blows peoples minds that I prefer those to his sonnets or comedies. Contemporary authors are hard to keep up with, but I'm enjoying Brandon Sanderson novels, a guilty pleasure.
I'll have to look into some of her work, it seems. I myself have torn opinions on Shakespeare, despite being a huge Hamlet fan. I understand that he was something really special in his day, but now...frankly I think he gets overhyped a little, and that very few people actually understand his writing. He has a beautiful way of saying nothing, a lot of the time.
Admittedly I don't know many modern authors myself; I tend to stick to classics most of the time. I recently read
Lolita for the first time, and despite the dark subject matter it was one of the most eloquent, beautiful prose I'd ever read. Recently I discovered Richard Siken's poetry, and I must admit, I'm in love. (=
