Tsukino Usagi, just your average 14 year old in the eighth grade with typically demanding parents and an annoying little brother, Shingo. Clumsy, and a bit of a crybaby who likes nothing more than to eat sweets, sleep, read comic books, play video games, and watch anime, not a girl you would think to be a champion of justice.

She attends Juban Municipal Junior High School where she is habitually late and makes less than perfect grades, as her teacher Haruna-sensei so often reminds her with frequent visits to detention. She is supported by her classmate and best friend Naru-chan as well as Umino, a love struck boy with thick glasses that has an obvious crush on her.

Luna, a talking black cat with a crescent mark on her forehead, appears one fateful day to change Usagi's life forever. Walking in through Usagi's open window, Luna introduces herself to the disbelieving Usagi and gives her a brooch as a present. Luna makes an attempt to explain that Usagi is the one she's been looking for and that she is a chosen warrior whose mission is to fight against strange enemies and to find the princess with the others. Luna then tells her to say these words, Moon Prism Power, Make Up! Upon complying Usagi finds herself transformed into the Sailor Senshi of Love and Justice, Sailor Moon. It isn't long before she finds herself facing numerous bad guys, occasionally helped by the mysterious Tuxedo Kamen.

It seems as if Usagi has more than one secrete identity hidden up her sleeve. In episode 35 we discover that she is also the elusive Moon Princess that up until now she and the Senshi have been searching for. It seems as if her memories about her past life are finally becoming painfully clear.

At the beginning of the series, Usagi has a major crush on the older Furuhata Motoki, an employee at Crown Video Arcade, and her personal hero Tuxedo Kamen, giving them equal places in her heart. It isn't until much later that she discovers her true love, Chiba Mamoru, her love from her past life as Princess Serenity. Their relationship goes through many hardships throughout the show and isn't always what one would call perfect, but somehow they always manage to pull through.

Even Usagi's future self makes an appearance as the queen of the future Crystal Tokyo, Neo-Queen Serenity during Sailor Moon R when the people of the Black Moon Kingdom appear.

Usagi goes through many transformations where her Senshi powers grow stronger, giving her many different attacks and transformations.
