No, you don't have to equip them.
Your evolving items are not really influenced by anything that you, as the owner of them, does.
They only evolve when there is an update from gaia (usually comes on fridays) saying that your item and it's specific generation is evolving.
It's' not influenced by how long you have it, how long you wear it, how many posts you make, whatever. It ONLY evolves when gaia says it does. If you have any further questions about evolving items I believe there are a couple Fact threads in the forums about them.

Yes, they are expensive. Took me a long time to get mine. If you work hard and get a little help from your friends though i'm sure you will get it before you know it. :3
