It's the best thing for character development. A lot of new books, movies, and tv shows have characters that don't make any sense. The Big Bang Theory is a perfect example of this. Someone as nerdy as Leonard most likely wouldn't be into someone like Penny. Most nerds prefer the company of other nerds and would find "normal" people to be mentally unstimulating.
The other thing is nerds tend to not discriminate based one education. So someone like Sheldon typically wouldn't dislike people with below average intelligence.
